Music Makers celebrate three decades with concert at Genesis PHOTO BY

The Delta Music Makers celebrated their 30th anniversary with a free concert at Ladner’s Genesis Theatre last Saturday afternoon. Founder and music director Curt Jantzen says the band began as a night school course for beginners in 1983. Long-term members voted on what music to perform during the first half of the Genesis show. The Music Makers now turn their attention to hosting the 10th edition of Ladner Bandfest next weekend at Memorial Park.

Twenty-two bands from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the U.S. will perform over two days.

Two Ladner quilters recently sent their love to Boston as part of an exhibit at the city’s Museum of Fine Arts.

To Boston With Love was the brainchild of Berene Campbell of North Vancouver.

“When the news of the Boston bombings broke, I was shocked,” Campbell said.

She decided to turn her shock and sadness over the event at the Boston Marathon last month into action and used her hobby, sewing, to express care for the city and those affected by the tragedy,

which killed three and injured hundreds.

Campbell, a member of the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild, came up with the idea to quilt flags embodying the theme “To Boston With Love.”

Stacey Murton and Arita Rai, who both live in Ladner and are also members of the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild, are happy to pitch in and quilt a few flags.

Murton contributed three flags while Rai made five.

“It was just very touching,” Rai, who has been quilting for 25 years, said of the project.

“As quilters, I find in general that we like to give.”

Ladner waterfront plans all wet Residents show up at public hearing to voice their displeasure at proposed increase in building heights BY

An overflow crowd showed up at a public hearing Tuesday to voice opposition to revitalization plans for the Ladner waterfront.

Well over 100 people packed Delta council chambers at municipal hall to make it clear they weren’t keen on proposed design and building height regulations aimed at attracting investment to redevelop the area.

One of the bylaws up for discussion would allow building heights go from two storeys to twoand-a-half storeys on the waterfront. Buildings on the south side of Chisholm Street would be permitted to increase from two to four storeys, but there’s a provision to allow a developer to go even higher if a “significant community benefit” is provided.

Deputy community planning director Marcy Sangret told council those community benefits could include creating open space improvements, public parking or a boardwalk. She

Waterfront Redevelopment Advisory Committee, expressed concern that was echoed throughout the hearing regarding the proposed building heights as well as the loss of the historical flavour of the area. He said he believed there was never

any intention by the committee to allow anything greater than four storeys, so the wording needs to be amended.

Area resident Brenda Jefferson, saying she’s opposed to four storeys, let alone six, warned council

that it should think carefully about the proposed changes.

John Stevens warned Delta might end up with development it regrets.

Mary Taitt said once provisions allow for bigger buildings, residents would be fighting a never-ending

battle against developers.

“Across the Fraser River estuary from us in Steveston, they’re facing the same greedy attempts to disconnect their village from its waterfront, but Richmond is ahead of Delta with its heritage values, through its Steveston Village Heritage Conservation Area,” said Taitt.

The only person to speak in favour of the proposals was local architect Brian Hart, who said it would be a necessary first step to attract investment.

Responding to a flyer by opponents, titled Save the Ladner Waterfront, Hart noted nothing has changed in the area for decades, despite numerous plans and discussion. He also said buildings up to six storeys could conceivably only be constructed on a limited number of smaller lots.

Following the meeting, Mayor Lois Jackson said they’re doing their best to retain the character of historic Ladner, while at the same time hoping to attract investment to revitalize the area.

Delta is calling on TransLink to help students

Public transit being eyed as an alternative after funding cut eliminates school bus service to rural areas BY

Civic politicians are joining the campaign to find transportation alternatives for local students after the Delta school board was forced to cut bus service.

On Monday night, Delta council approved sending a letter to TransLink asking it to work with the Delta school district to revise bus routes and scheduling in Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta to provide

more accessible public transportation options for students.

The board approved a series of budget cuts last month, including eliminating bus service for most students. To make up for a phased $728,000 cut in transportation funding from Victoria, the district eliminated rural service, but maintained it for special needs students.

The school district currently provides bus service to about 400 students; 60

per cent of those live outside the district’s walking limits, while the other 40 per cent are special needs students.

In 2002, Victoria changed the School Act to make student transportation the responsibility of parents and bussing an optional service for school districts.

However, the funding formula remained the same so Delta continued to offer the service.

This year, the Ministry of Education changed the

funding formula, which resulted in a reduction in Delta from more than $1.5 million to $830,000.

“The formula, from Delta’s perspective, is definitely flawed,” said Coun.

Bruce McDonald. “It is a very serious issue... I don’t think we can let it rest.”

The letter to TransLink will include specific recommendations from the school board, including extending the operation of the 601 bus or starting the C89 community shuttle bus earlier.

It also asks TransLink to provide bus service for students heading to schools in North Delta from the farm areas in East Delta and Panorama Ridge.

“Delta is geographically the largest municipality in the Lower Mainland,” school board chair Laura Dixon said in a letter to Mayor Lois Jackson. “The geographical realities of Delta, with farmland and Burns Bog separating the three communities of Ladner, Tsawwassen and

Last week, a large contingent of concerned parents packed a board meeting to continue to voice their displeasure about the elimination of the bussing program.

The following are some of the calls of interest the Delta police responded to in the South Delta area between Tuesday, May 21 and Sunday, May 26: Tsawwassen • May 21, 8:41 p.m., 2100-block of Tsawwassen Drive: Bike valued at $3,000 stolen from the residence. It is described as a 21-speed men’s red and white Brodie mountain bike with saddlebags, rat trap and red, high-style handlebars.

• May 24, 5:22 p.m., 5700-block of 12th Avenue: Complainant reported to police that a male had purchased a Giant Method 02 bicycle and a few bike parts worth $500.34 with a Visa credit card. The clerk in the shop had checked identification, which matched the card. The credit card company cancelled payment, indicating it to be fraudulent and that this was a case of identity theft.

• May 24, 10:13 p.m., 400-block of Centennial Parkway: Report received that a group of youths had started two small bonfires on the beach. Police located the youths who were cooperative. They extinguished the fires and left the area.

• May 25, 4:51 p.m., Point Roberts border crossing: Border guard reported they were holding a suspect who was driving while prohibited. Police attended

and the driver was arrested, chartered and given a 24hour roadside suspension.

The suspect was released on a promise to appear in court at a future date.

• May 26, 9:12 p.m., 100block of Tsawwassen Beach Road: Complainant reported her wallet stolen while she was at the paintball centre. The wallet is described as a gold Guess brand with giraffe print containing driver’s licence, Carecard, debit and credit cards, and $100 in currency.

• May 26, 9:16 a.m., 5800-block of Goldenrod Crescent: Complainant reported the side mirror was broken off her vehicle sometime overnight. File number provided for insurance purposes.

Ladner • May 21, 10:18 a.m., 8000-block of Hoskins Street: On an inspection of a truck parked overnight outside the business, the complainant found a high pressure oil pump valued at $1,400 had been stolen from under the hood.

• May 23, 2:21 p.m., 6100-block of 48A Avenue: Complainant reported that someone had broken into his parent’s home by removing the screen and entering through an open back window. Items stolen include

an iPad, jewelry and rolled coins. A canvass of the neighbourhood revealed a man was seen entering the backyard in the afternoon.

Investigation is still ongoing.

• May 25, 11:30 p.m., 5500-block of Admiral Boulvard: Crime Watch reported four youths shooting at cans with a pellet gun in the playground of the elementary school. Police located the youths who admitted to the offence. All youths were cooperative and indicated they understood the potential consequences and seriousness of their actions.

• May 26, 10:02 a.m., 4470-block of Dawn Drive: Unknown person entered the home of the complainant through an open upstairs window. Items stolen include a Dell laptop, jewelry, currency and a vehicle. The suspect found the keys to the vehicle in the residence and was observed by a neighbour backing the vehicle from the garage. The neighbour described the suspect as male with dark curly hair.

Investigation is ongoing.

• May 26, 7:46 p.m., 5200-block of Central Avenue: Police located several male youths who were hanging out on the roof of the school. The youths, following a warning, were cooperative and left the area as requested.

Delta team just misses at provincials Firefighters now have sights on nationals in Edmonton

Kamloops team.

Rickards said training is like a second full-time job for the firefighters, many of who have families and children. He said on many occasions, members are in the gym early in the morning or late at night preparing for the competitions.

“It puts our department on the map,” he said of the success enjoyed by the team, which also includes firefighters Mark Millward, Steve Wood, Rob Lemon and Reid Taylor.

The team, which has been sponsored by Westshore Terminals for 18 years, holds children’s events throughout the spring and summer in order to raise money to help offset travel costs. This year, it will be set up at the Boundary Bay Airshow, Tsawwassen Sun Festival and Tour de Delta, among other events.

A team of Delta firefighters kicked off another year of competition last weekend with a strong showing at the Scott FireFit provincial championship.

Team Westshore Terminals, which is made up of six local firefighters who compete in a variety of events every year, finished in second place at the provincial championship in Aldergrove.

The firefighters will now set their sights on the FireFit national championship in Edmonton in September. As well, the team will compete at a regional event in Everett, Washington at the end of August in a bid for a spot at the world championships in Las Vegas in October.

The competitions, both team and individual, are

based on tasks firefighters would typically have to carry out in emergency situations.

Team manager Ryan Rickards doesn’t think the group will have any problem making it to the world championships again this year. Team Westshore Terminals was one minute away from winning the team competition last year and firefighter Jamie McGarva won both the provincial and national FireFit individual competitions last year as well as taking top spot, and breaking the world record, at the Firefighter Combat Challenge in the U.S. McGarva, who has been on the team for eight years, captured second place in the individual competition over the weekend, coming in just behind a Kamloops firefighter. Sprinkling restrictions to go into effect tomorrow

Annual lawn sprinkling regulations will come into effect tomorrow.

Mornings-only lawn sprinkling begins June 1 to conserve high-quality drinking water for other uses and help Metro Vancouver deliver enough water during the summer.

Until Sept. 30, lawn sprinkling is not permitted during evenings when the demand for water for dishwashers, clothes washing, showers and other domestic uses is at its daily peak.

One lawn sprinkler uses as much water in one hour as 25 toilet flushes, five loads of laundry and five dishwasher loads.

Lawn sprinkling is only permitted at the following times and days: • Even numbered residential addresses - Monday, Wednesday and Saturday between 4 and 9 a.m.

• Odd numbered residential addresses - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday between 4 and 9 a.m.

These restrictions do not apply to watering of flowers, vegetables, shrubs and trees. Metro Vancouver recommends that people water

Healthy lawn only needs to be watered once a week

Here are some tips to minimize the quantity of water that’s wasted on lawns: • Over-watering a lawn makes the grass weaker and more susceptible to disease.

• A healthy lawn only needs to be watered for one hour, once a week, or less if it rains.

• Most lawns only need one inch of water each week.

Put an empty tuna can out on the lawn when you sprinkle. Turn off the sprinkler when the tuna can is full of water.

• Water your lawns and gardens early in the morning to reduce evaporation.

• Leave grass clippings on your lawn. This reduces evaporation and the need to water your lawn.

• Replace lawns with ornamental grasses and other drought-resistant plants that require little or no watering. their lawns a maximum of just one hour a week.

Some residents collect rainwater in rain barrels and use that non-potable water for lawns and gardens. And many are choosing not to put drinking water on their lawns. After a few days of rain and cloudy skies, a yellow lawn greens up again.

Darrell Mussatto, chair of Metro Vancouver’s utilities committee, said morning-only lawn sprinkling helps to flatten the spikes in

water consumption during summer evenings, so the region has plenty of water for personal uses.

“If businesses and residents continue to conserve water during the summer, Metro Vancouver can push back the date when we have to build higher dams, bigger pumping stations and bigger water mains,” Mussatto said. “Wise water use will help minimize additional costs, for both taxpayers and the environment.”

Delta Cable recently announced the launching of a new, faster Internet service.

The Woman’s Health Clinic is designed for women looking for information on menopause.

MURPHY’S LAW I suspect I wasn’t alone in thinking all the tunnel talk that took place during this month’s provincial election campaign might well have been a moot point. The prevailing wisdom, or at least the pollsters, had the Liberals headed for defeat, which would have almost certainly shelved long-awaited plans to address the area’s biggest traffic bottleneck.

Thankfully for beleaguered commuters, that didn’t end up being the case.

In a rather ironic twist, Delta South voters, who eschewed the Liberals in favour of another term for independent Vicki Huntington, stand to benefit from the fact the rest of the province has given the governing party another four years.

When Premier Christy Clark announced last September that her government would begin public consultation on what became known as the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, many, myself included, viewed the move rather cynically.

This was a desperate politician, trailing by 20 points in the polls, who appeared willing to promise just about anything to boost the sagging fortunes of the Liberals, who had made no secret of the fact they viewed replacing the tunnel as a low priority.

Whether the sudden offer to pursue another crossing over the south arm of the Fraser River was genuine or not didn’t seem to matter a great deal given Clark wasn’t likely to be around beyond May 14. Well, it’s May 31 and she’s still here, although there’s still that matter of a by-election victory before she takes a seat in the legislature.

Four more years of Liberal rule means the tunnel replacement, or augmentation, project that began last fall will now have ample time to assess the five options unveiled earlier this year and begin the long journey down the chosen path.

We’re told it will be at least a decade before the first vehicle crosses the new span, so the likelihood of the gang in power now being there for the ribbon cutting isn’t great, but they can make significant headway on the project before the next election.

And that’s all commuters in these parts really need. With just a couple rounds of public consultation in the books, the New Democrats could have easily put the brakes on this project had Adrian Dix led them to victory earlier this month, but four years from now — fingers crossed — we’ll be so far down the road that even a change in government won’t be able to derail this thing.

That’s presuming, of course, Clark and the Liberals make good on their election promise.

New SFPR unlikely to improve the experience for commuters STEVE GRAHAM

COMMUNITY COMMENT In the past few weeks I have noticed some progress on the South Fraser Perimeter Road where it intersects Highway 17, but not much where it intersects Highway 99. I still can’t figure out the rationale for this road.

I recollect that it was supposed to be finished in 2011 or 2012. The project website, which is sparse, states it will be finished by the end of 2013. I called the project information line and got the following response: “There is no project schedule. The road will actually be finished when it is completed.”

It’s obviously a government project.

When I drive on Highway 99 east of Highway 17 during rush hours it is evident the SFPR is having a severe impact on the capac-

ity and flow of traffic from South Surrey. Traffic is often backed up almost to the George Massey Tunnel in the afternoon rush and to Highway 91 in the mornings, with the throttle occurring at the SFPR intersection.

Fortunately one can still cut out to South Delta and avoid these backups, but there will a severe impact once the eastbound backups on Highway 99 extend past the exits onto Highway 17.

I predict that an even worse mess will occur at the Highway 17/SFPR intersection just north of 28th Avenue. The alignment has two lanes of northbound on Highway 17 turning east onto the SFPR, while there is only a single-lane overpass on the right to continue going north on Highway 17.

According to the project website, the rationale for this is: “SFPR will be the route of choice for the majority of non-local, ferry and commuter traffic. As a result, traffic through Ladner will be significantly reduced.”

While I may be wrong, I predict most traffic will continue to prefer to go to Vancouver and Richmond, rather than to north Surrey. The

result will be horrendous backups and accidents on this single lane.

Further the lane will be exposed to high winds and freezing in winter to an extent even worse than that on the existing Highway 17 railway overpass. In summary, my hunch is the SFPR will make your commute to Vancouver a lot worse.

Another consequence of the SFPR may be crime. Currently South Delta is relatively isolated and relatively safe. However, I recall reading a few months ago the SFPR will allow trucks to get from the Deltaport to Whalley in only 20 minutes. Conversely, the road will also allow traffic from Whalley to get to Tsawwassen in 20 minutes.

Lock your doors.

It may turn out the SFPR, when finished, greatly enhances our daily lives, but I doubt it. The federal government appears to have spent our slice of the Action Plan d’Action to pave over and cut up farmland, potentially exacerbate our commutes and make Highway 17 more dangerous.

I think the money would have been far better spent upgrading Highway 17 and on a new bridge or tunnel.

Squadron grateful for the support from community

The 828 Hurricane Air Cadet Squadron has successfully completed 40 years of training thanks to your contributions.

Local 12- to 19-year-olds who have been participating in this national youth program have been able to develop their physical fitness and leadership skills through activities such as biathlon, first aid, effective speaking, drill, marksmanship, flying and survival exercises.

They have met citizenship and community service expectations by participating in annual poppy sales and helping local service organizations with pancake breakfasts, book sales, dance and triathlon setups, Remembrance Day observances and more.

All of this would not have been possible without dedicated parents, officers and the community.

Cadets have fundraised

through two Tag Days each November and March, and you have been very generous in donating to those smartly-dressed cadets holding cans outside local businesses. Many thanks to Safeway, Save-On Foods, Thrifty Foods, B.C. liquor stores, London Drugs, Shoppers Drug Mart and Rona Hardware.

The squadron’s sponsoring committee also held regular meat draws at The Landing Pub and hosted a giant garage sale in April.

Thank-you all for attending these events and further ensuring the squadron activities could continue.

Earlier this year, our squadron presented Delta council with a request for an easement in the rent we have been paying for the South Delta Recreation Centre (for 40 years), and many of you have inquired about the outcome of that request. Unfortunately, we were denied.

So, we will continue

to fundraise to cover this rental cost, which accounts for almost one-third of our yearly budget, and we will continue to count on your support, and be appreciative of the past 40 years of support.

Please come to the squadron’s annual ceremonial review on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the South Delta Recreation Centre. This is a terrific opportunity to see what the cadets have been working on all year.

If you have a child, 12 to 16 years old, who may find interest in this program, please come to an information night on Wednesday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at the recreation centre.

Council will make right decision on Ladner waterfront Editor: I have lived adjacent to Chisholm Street at Shorewalk for 21 years. I attended previous meetings concerning the development of the Ladner waterfront and feel there was some good input and discussion by the players involved.

I think that development is good. I respect Delta

council and know the decisions it makes will be the right ones and not extreme.

Developments such as Shorewalk, Seafarer and River West are at the right height for along the river and I feel this height would be a good pattern and flow to follow.

I do not approve of the scare tactics Save the

Waterfront used in the brochure delivered in our mail.

Change is going to happen so we have to be a positive part of it. We live in a beautiful location and I feel this something we can share.

We cannot live in a cocoon and shut the world out. It is a selfish attitude that is a no-win.

Another vote for holding by-election

Editor: Re: Councillor can’t do two jobs, Murphy’s Law, May 29 I couldn’t agree more.

A councillor can’t do two jobs — one in Victoria and one in Delta. Scott Hamilton is kidding himself if he thinks he can.

He serves on various Delta committees (as well as at the Metro Vancouver level). I fail to see how he can adequately cover these responsibilities while darting back and forth to Victoria. There is potential for conflict of interest too.

I disagree with Hamilton’s comments when he states: “Everybody’s telling him that they don’t want a byelection.” Has he asked the residents of South Delta about this?

I suggest he needs a reminder that although he got a majority in his riding, many North Delta residents did not vote for him. Has he asked them for their opinion?

The Tsawwassen Shrine Club will host its 44th annual salmon barbecue at Ladner Harbour Park this Sunday.

Executive member Michael Cruise said 2,000 pounds of salmon would be cooked.

The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Meals include a big piece of salmon, coleslaw, a bun, French fries and coffee, he said. Pop costs extra.

“We have a ton of fish and we give everybody a good shake,” Cruise said.

He noted just over 2,000 people were served last year.

The barbecue is also a fundraiser for the club. The Shriners support several community causes, including the Delta Hospital Foundation.

Tsawwassen Shrine Club members will be grilling salmon beginning at noon on Sunday.

Shrine clowns will be at the barbecue providing entertainment, he said, adding the event is a good one for the whole family.

“It’s a family thing.”

The salmon barbecue runs from noon until 5:30 p.m. (or until the fish runs out) and takes place rain or shine. The club provides takeout if it’s raining.

Newcomers welcomed to the community

For the last few months the Delta Welcoming Communities team has talked to newcomers from all walks of life.

Interviews were also conducted with community leaders, service providers and business owners in Delta.

The emerging picture of Delta is that of a caring and friendly community, but also a place where many feel socially isolated.

Language and other barriers still make it difficult for many to fully participate in the social life of the community.

The Welcoming Communities Program, with federal and provincial funding, is offered in several municipalities in B.C. In Delta, the program is led by the Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) in partnership with other Deltabased agencies.

The program started by asking newcomers to talk about their experiences of moving to Canada.

Newcomers have described struggles to see their professional experiences and qualifications recognized.

One newcomer was close to tears when saying: “I came to Delta with the

dream that I could establish myself professionally and economically. Instead the first years were very hard. It was very difficult to find work in my field. It felt as if all the doors were closed to me. I was very worried about not being able to support my family economically.”

Recent immigrants also talked about how safe Delta is, the green spaces and clean environment, the strong democratic processes and the social safety net.

The goal for the Welcoming Communities Program is to help newcomers in Delta get to know their new home and feel empowered to contribute to its social fabric.

Its next event, on Saturday, June 8, is a free guided walk through Burns Bog. Walks are free and open to all recent immigrants as well as long-term residents. They provide opportunities to network and socialize while exploring s parts of Delta.

Century Cuts for Cancer has goal set at $10,000 for its third year BY

Val Pereira is once again raising money for cancer.

He’s organizing the third annual Century Cuts for Cancer, set for next Friday at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, and has a goal of reaching $10,000.

Cancer has hit close to home for Pereira, 54, a member of Century Group’s maintenance department.

“I’ve lost five family members altogether. I lost my best friend last week. I buried him last week,” he said.

They grew up together, went to school and served in the army together back home in Portugal.

Proceeds from next week’s head shaving event will go towards the Canadian Cancer Society.

There were 19 participants signed up as of this week.

Ladner’s Cove Links Golf Course is putting on a junior summer program this year.

Junior golfers get 12 rounds for the season at the nine-hole executive course located near Captain’s Cove Marina.

The program runs from July 2 to Aug. 28.

Lessons will be given by Chris Lowe, who has 16 years of teaching experience, every Wednesday (nine lessons) starting on July 3.

Pneuma?s Fun Fair to take kids around world

Pneuma Church is holding an Everywhere Fun Fair vacation bible school this summer.

Kids will get to “travel” to a different country each day of the Ladner camp.

“They’re going to go to Mexico and Zimbabwe and a couple of other places and learn about neighours ... neighbours around the world and discover how God’s love is everywhere, including their neighbourhoods as well,” says Erin Spring, children’s director at Pneuma.

Everywhere Fun Fair runs from July 8 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. It costs $30 for the week.

“We’ll have crafts, activities and storytime. It’s going to be a lot fun,” says Spring.

An afternoon day camp will be held as well. That costs $20 a day.

A community carnival, to wrap up the bible school, will be held on Sunday, July 14. There will be games, inflatables and lots of good food.

Imagine That, a summer arts camp, is back for its fourth year at Cedar Park Church in Ladner.

The camp’s mission statement is about offering a quality arts program to kids in the community, introducing and encouraging interest in the arts while also giving an opportunity to be mentored by artists active in their fields.

“We wanted to celebrate the arts and offer a chance for kids (ages three to 13) to work and learn from professionals in these fields,” the camp’s website states.

The camp runs over five days, July 22 to 26, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a celebration night happening on the Friday evening at 7 p.m., according to the site.

Southpointe Academy students delve into the world of William Shakespeare next week with their production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

“The play itself is all about truth, love, relationships. It’s a fun, fun play,” says director and Southpointe drama teacher Greg Kean, noting it’s one of Shakespeare’s most produced pieces.

Rather than using any particular period, their version of the comedy will have a very eclectic design element to it.

“We have this sort of monolithic set, which is not anywhere, or any time,” he says.

Students, including several Grade 9s, have been working on the play since January.

“The more they understand that Shakespeare wrote stories about real people with real emotions and real needs, the more

they like it,” says Kean.

“It sort of always seems foreign at the beginning and then slowly as they evolve and understand what they’re saying and attach that human truth to it ... Once they know that, then it really starts to take off,” he says.

“We’re just at that point in the process now, when they really get it.”

Grade 12 student Ziyaan Harji plays Nick Bottom, a member of an acting troupe, in the upcoming production.

“He’s borderline arrogant but he’s always enthusiastic and wanting to take on all the roles of his peers,” Harji explains.

Kean says he thinks the role is one of the funniest parts in all of Shakespeare.

“It’s a good swan song for Ziyaan, he’s been a real stellar performer for us here,” he says.

Dates for A Midsummer Night’s Dream are June 5, 6 and 7 at 7 p.m. at Southpointe Academy, 1900-56th St., Tsawwassen.

Tickets cost $10.

Local singer to help honour Canadian poet Ladner singer/songwriter Rosemarie Hurst will get to help commemorate “a real trailblazer” next month in Ontario.

Hurst has been invited to perform music from her CD Faithfully Yours: Ballads of E. Pauline Johnson at a ceremony at the Chiefswood National Historic Site commemorating the 100th year of Johnson’s death.

Hurst suffered a stroke followed by a ruptured brain aneurysm in 2009.

Her CD, released in 2011,

is based on the work of Pauline Johnson (18611913), a Canadian poet known for celebrating her First Nations heritage in her writing. Hurst says she’s had some wonderful events happen after her serious health issues “but being asked to sing at one of my favourite places in Ontario is a real bonus; something quite magical, as it was a place I visited in my late teens and early 20s.”

Hurst came to Canada from England when she

was eight and grew up in Ontario. She left for B.C. in 1997.

“I love her poetry and I admire her so much for her courage, tenacity, fearlessness ... and belief in herself.

She was ahead of her time and her story is a very fascinating and inspiring one,” Hurst previously said of Johnson.

“She was an international celebrity in her age, and paved the way for future women and Native writers/performers, and has left

a lasting impact and legacy in Canada,” states a press release.

“This event and the other events we have planned to commemorate the anniversary are a great way for people to learn more about Pauline Johnson, a truly remarkable woman who was a real trailblazer for women and native people in Canada,” says Chiefswood curator Karen Dearlove in the release.

The event is scheduled for June 15.

Sidekick goes to Faith County The Sidekick Players are winding up their 16th season with an encore presentation of the hilarious Faith County II, An Evening of Culture.

Written by Mark Landon Smith and directed for Sidekick by Carroll Lefebvre, assisted by Bernice Fehr, the play opens a three-week run at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre on Thursday, June 6.

Sidekick won several awards, including Best Production, at the Greater Vancouver Festival with this play several years ago, taking it to Theatre BC’s Mainstage where it won Best Ensemble and a multitude of honourable mentions.

Set in Mineola County, the Mineola Cultural Society for Cultural Recognition is producing Romeo and Juliet. Even though the cast members don’t have their lines memorized, the set isn’t finished and a dog keeps barking offstage, they’re gonna give it a go.

“It’s been so much fun just rehearsing this play,” says Lefebvre. “We are laughing so much it makes it difficult to focus on the end product. It’s a play where the cast and crew have more fun than the audience at times, it seems.”

Having been in community theatre for over 40 years, Lefebvre has seen a lot of “bloopers” in her day. This play epitomizes that as a crazy group of misfit best friends in a small community get together to perform and run into everything that can go wrong. “(It’s) something like what Sidekick

For the production Sidekick is welcoming back Rudy Zita, Darsey Meredith, Kristopher Chubak and Julia Barros.

Newcomers include Carol Jones, Peg Keenleyside, Kat Stewart and Jeff Pannell.

The cast is made up entirely of Delta residents.

Faith County II, An Evening of Culture

opens June 6 and runs to June 22, (Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings only at 8 p.m.).

Adults are $18; seniors (60+) and students (12-18) are $15. All seating is bistro-style and refreshments are available for purchase.

Auditions start for next show The Sidekick Players open their 17th season with one of the most moving plays ever written, The Laramie Project.

On Oct. 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. He died six days later.

His torture and murder became a watershed moment in America that highlighted many of the fault lines in our culture. A month after the murder, members of Tectonic Theatre Project travelled to Laramie to conduct interviews with the people of the town.

Six tips to getting a good night’s sleep Lack of sleep can also be blamed for the widening of our waistlines.

When the body is sleepdeprived, it dramatically affects the two hormones (leptin and gherlin) responsible for making us feel full and hungry, thereby triggering the brain (and hence the stomach) with the message that we are hungry, even when we aren’t.

Sleeplessness also makes us insulin-resistant, which in turn puts our bodies in a fat-storing mode instead of fat-burning mode.

What is the ideal amount of sleep?

According to the National Sleep Foundation, that all depends on your age.

• School-age children (five to 10 years) should be getting 10 to 11 hours of shut-eye.

• Teens (10 to 17 years) need 8.5 to 9.25 hours a night.

• Adults require seven to nine hours.

CBC News reported that sleep deprivation affects the cells within our body involved with inflammation, immunity and the cells’ response to stress.

Decrease your body’s ability to fight inflammation and you are welcoming a whole host of diseases, from high cholesterol to heart disease and certain cancers.

Don’t think you can store sleep by sleeping in on the weekend and sleeping less on weeknights. This messes with our melatonin production, which in turn will make it harder to fall asleep.

Taper your sleep Try the less is more plan and taper your sleep by keeping your wake-up time constant, but go to bed one hour later. After two weeks, add back the time in halfhour increments.

A lot of sleep clinics use this technique on their patients and find 25 per cent success rate within one to two weeks.

Keep it cool or warm Your body sleeps better when comfortable, so make sure your bedroom is either cool enough or warm enough for you. According

to WebMD.com, when you go to sleep your body tries to maintain your set point for body temperature — the temperature your brain is trying to achieve. If you are too hot, or too cold, the body struggles trying to achieve this set point and in turn you lose sleep.

Natural sleep aids Some natural and alternative sleeping aids that you can try are: • Melatonin – Our body produces melatonin and secretes it on a daily, regular rhythm. This rhythm can get messed up, especially with jet lag and insomnia.

Melatonin can help to reset the body’s circadian rhythm and help you back to sleep.

• Magnesium – This mineral plays a key role with sleep regulation. When purchasing aim to buy calcium citrate. This is one of the most digestible forms of magnesium and available at most health food stores.

• Valerian Root – This medicinal herb can have a sedating effect and help

you fall asleep. However, it can take a few weeks and it does interact with certain medications so make sure you consult with your doctor before taking.

• 5-HTP – It is a chemical compound that is naturally produced in your body to make serotonin (our “happy” hormone), and it is also a byproduct of the amino acid L-tryptophan. It’s the same amino acid found in turkey, that same turkey that makes you want to snooze after Thanksgiving dinner.

• GABA – GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a chemical in the brain that counteracts with another chemical in the brain that keeps us alert. When purchasing GABA, ensure you only buy natural GABA supplements. Synthetic supplements do not cross the brain barrier and are therefore ineffective.

Bluegrass back at McKee The Jammers at McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre will be hosting another great bluegrass performance when Junior Sisk and his band, Ramblers Choice, come to Ladner next week.

The multiple award-winning group, which also includes Jason Tomlin, Chris Davis, Billy Hawks and Jason Davis, will perform at McKee on Thursday, June 6 at 8 p.m.

Sisk, who comes from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, is one of bluegrass music’s most honest voices. Over the years, his haunting, almost lonesome vocals have earned him the devotion of countless traditional bluegrass fans from all over the world.

Throughout his music career, Sisk has performed with a plethora of top-notch bands, including his family’s band, Dreamin’ Creek.

In 2007, he re-formed Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice (a band that had a short but successful run in the mid-1990s) and has been going strong ever since.

The occasion, set for June 3 to 9, acknowledges and celebrates seniors and their contributions to the community.

McKee kicks off week with parade in Ladner

There will be plenty going on at the McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre as locals mark Seniors Week.

“We put on a big week of programs here. A lot of our instructors are right there with us to help out with a lot of things,” said McKee chairperson Arla Tanner.

New this year will be a parade through downtown Ladner.

“We will be doing a parade down the middle of town in recognition of seniors,” she said. “It’s called a Salute to Seniors.”

The route is still being finalized due to construction near the centre.

“We want to make it safe for our seniors and walkers,” Tanner said.

The parade departs McKee at 9 a.m. A nutrition talk at the centre takes place after the walk finishes.

A Better at Home workshop, on Thursday at 11 a.m., will help seniors who have been encouraged to stay at home as much as possible to determine what services are out there to

KinVillage using week to get Tsaw. seniors active KinVillage Community Centre has some fun events planned to help mark Seniors Week.

The week is a good way for the centre to help get seniors in the community active, notes director of recreation John Lusted.

“People can come and try different programs, programs they’ve never tried before,” he says.

A pancake breakfast is scheduled for Monday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. to get the week started. It costs $5.50

for a pancake, scrambled egg, two sausages and tea or coffee.

Following breakfast there will be free activity demonstrations and trials from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Activities include chair exercises, yoga, zumba, folk dancing, line dancing and Fitness with Beth.

The different programs range from popular, ongoing ones to offerings the centre would like to introduce, notes KinVillage’s Bettina Salini.

“We want to show people what they can come and do at KinVillage,” she says.

On Tuesday there will be a free movie (The Gods Must be Crazy) at 1:30 p.m. and ice cream with tea or coffee for $3.

There will be a luncheon and bridge event on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. that costs $10 per person.

Message received I make the mistake of assuming that an email or text sent was a message received and get frustrated when I get no response. I wonder if some of us feel that same way about praying?

We hit “send” in prayer, and then nothing... One could assume the message was not received, or was received but not acted upon. I have another possible reason for the perceived inactivity.

In the 10th chapter of the Book of the Prophet Daniel, I read an amazing account of Daniel grieving the situation that his people were in. He prayed and fasted for a full 21 days.

He had no confirmation that the message was received, or understood, or acted upon. Then he received word from a heavenly being who informed

You know that Porsche is not just the name of a car company, but also the name of a family legacy. And you likely know founder Ferdinand Porsche.

But this a story about the other “Mr. Porsche,” the one you have probably never heard about, the one who made it flourish. Not the one who gets all the accolades, but the one who created all the excitement.

Although the company that carries his name was born some 17 years before he was actively involved, Ferry Porsche is the one who steered it into the fast

lane.

On April 25, 1931, the Porsche company was formed as “designers and consultants for land, sea and air vehicles.” But it was Ferdinand Anton Ernst, nicknamed “Ferry,” the son of automotive genius Ferdinand Porsche, who made Porsche the sports car monolith it is today.

With a few smooth lines and an even smoother collection of engines, Ferry Porsche generated excitement during a time when Germany desperately needed a jump-start.

Ferry gave the post-war Germans something to dream about. He gave them Porsche: the symbol of

speed and superiority that continues to this day.

Ferry’s place in history was only natural. When he was born in Austria, on Sept. 19, 1909, his father was already technical director of the Austro-Daimler Company.

Ferry breathed machinery. At age 12, he was allowed to drive racecars while closely working with his father to learn the automotive craft.

Shortly after the family moved to Stuttgart in 1923, Ferry began working as a designer in his father’s own company. Their first contract, a 2.0-litre-engined car for the Wanderer Company, was designated number

007 to give the impression it was not Porsche’s first project.

The success of the vehicle led the Auto Union Company to appoint Ferdinand Porsche as the lead designer on a new racecar. Ferry would do all of the testing on the 16-cylinder supercharged engine until one day his father declared: “I have enough drivers, but only one son.”

Ferry stopped testing, but the Porsches were not done.

Before the Second World War, they began work on another project that would prove equally as incredible: the Volkswagen Beetle.

Nancy Coles, Diane Kaltenegger and Nancy Friesen sure know how to lead by example.

The trio, who regularly lead running groups through the streets of South Delta, blazed a trail at the recent BMO Vancouver Marathon.

Coles ran a best ever time in the half marathon portion of the race.

The 55-year-old personal trainer with Muscle Memory won her age group of 332 runners by a whopping 11 minutes with a clocking of 1:35.11 Her previous best time came when she was 28-years-old.

Coles had taken some time off after suffering stress fracture and much of her training was done off the roads. She competed at the Palm Springs Half Marathon in February which set the stage for her outstanding run in Vancouver.

“It was a fast course and I just felt very good,” said Coles. “I had spent six months off doing a lot of

hiking and biking and came back stronger than ever. There was also weight resistance training as well which is very important.”

Friesen, who has also been battling injuries, finished second in her age group of 176 entries with a time of 1:44.58. Just three weeks earlier, the 61-year-old was third in her class of 743 runners at the annual Vancouver Sun Run 10km event with a time of 48:14.

Meanwhile, Kaltenegger ran the complete 42km distance in Vancouver. The 50-year-old was not only best in her age group with a 3:23.22 clocking, but placed 35th overall among the 2,147 women competing. The Vancouver Marathon was part of her busy schedule as Kaltenegger prepares to compete in Ironman Canada for the second straight year.

She was ninth in her age group in the 2012 event and later competed at the Honolulu Marathon for the fourth consecutive year where she recorded her best time yet (3:29.32).

HOPKINS, Dorothy

Born Feb 12, 1919 in Leagrave England, Dorothy passed away peacefully on April 29, 2013 in Delta. Predeceased by husband Don and daughter Patricia, Dorothy is survived by sons Michael and Patrick (Linda), daughters through marriage Valarie and Tracy, siblings in England, other extended family, and friends. Dorothy had a true zest for life including family, friends, travel and cooking. As an active and independent senior in Tsawwassen, Dorothy volunteered her time to connect with seniors in the community offering companionship and support. Her secret sauce for a long life included annual trips to the island of Kauai in the winter to be with family and spending summers locally to be close to remaining family and friends. A definite 'trend setter' Dorothy’s eye for fashion and elegance served her well in helping to manage a popular children’s clothing store in Tsawwassen for many years. Dorothy had many passions including tending to her roses and geraniums, baking fabulous croissants and shortbread, and the glamour and romance of ballroom dancing. Dorothy loved a diverse range of sports leading to many hours watching tennis and golf and if there was a bridge table or scrabble board anywhere near, watch out: She was a fierce competitor! She will always be loved and remembered by all who knew her and forever in our hearts. A celebration of her life will be held on June 6th, 2013 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn 1665 56 St. Delta, BC starting at 2:00pm. CAMERON, Vernie Beatrice July 12, 1910 - May 13, 2013

Vernie passed away peacefully May 13th, 2013 at the great age of 102. Vernie was born and educated in Portsmouth, England and worked as a Nanny. In 1939, after marrying her husband Hugh, she moved to Tain, Scotland. They had two children, Jean and Hugh. In 1978 Vernie moved to Tsawwassen to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She was a great walker and loved to be out in the fresh air. Vernie was a very special person, was loved by all and never had a bad word to say about anyone. She will be greatly missed. Vernie is predeceased by husband Hugh (1964) and Grandson Mark (2004). Survived by daughter Jean (John), son Hugh, grandchildren Fiona and Moira (Kristien) and great grandchildren Conner, Jesse and Lauren. Special thanks to all the caring staff at Kinvillage for their wonderful care of Vernie over the past 5 years. Our beautiful Mom passed away on May 18, 2013. Predeceased by her loving husband of 38 years, Hank (1989) and her devoted companion of 21 years, Doug Dougans (2013). She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Jill Diane (Ron) and Judi Anne. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Ernest & Martha Yardy and 12 sisters and brothers. She was a founding member of the Tsawwassen Tennis Club; volunteered for 40 years at the Canadian Cancer Clinic and Triumf; spent the last ten years as a volunteer at the Delta Hospice Cottage store. She loved to entertain – for over 30 years she hosted a Ladies’ Day with the women from the TTC and Arbutus Tennis clubs; held annual Christmas soup nights with her Beta Sigma Phi sorority sisters and many other milestone events with their dear friends. Mom will be remembered as a faithful parishioner of St. David’s Anglican Church. She was treasured by many and will be missed. Our thank-you to Dr. Hollinger; the staff at Delta Hospital Emergency and the Delta Hospice for the care and respect they showed Mom. Her niece Rosemary was no end of support to her daughters. Ellen and Keiko were Mom’s caregivers and we are forever grateful for their wonderful care of her. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 6 at 2:00 pm at St David’s Anglican Church in Tsawwassen. It is with immeasurable sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather. Dad lost his battle with leukemia.

Predeceased by grandson Jake Hebenton.

Survived by brothers Alex and Robert.

Jack will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Bernice, children Cherie Farlow (Ric), Scott Hebenton (Diane), Laura Lee Schuss (Ed), grandchildren Fraser and Richelle Farlow (Leo), Carolyn Hebenton, Natalie, Brady and Jeff Van Hest, Carlton and Logan Schuss, great grandchildren Mason and Ivy. He was born in Warmen, Sask. and grew up in Vancouver.

Always hard-working, a millwright by trade, Dad had a long and diverse career; co-owner Comet Transfer Moving & Storage, Queen Charlotte Fisheries, Coca Cola Bottling, Pro-One Industries. Not one to retire and be idle, he spent many years working at Palmer Marine, volunteering at McKee House and Lifeline. A member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61 for 34 years he helped with Delta Assist Christmas Hampers. Dad liked tinkering in the garage, his cribbage games and looked forward to coffee Thursday mornings with his Coca Cola buddies. A big supporter of Ladner Pioneer and Delta Minor Lacrosse, Dad enjoyed watching the games and spending time with his family.

Roadway Towing Ltd. has two positions available for tow truck operators. Applicants must reside in the area in order to meet our contract obligations. Applicants must have a minimum of a class 5 driver’s licence without restrictions. Most importantly chosen applicants must pass a criminal record check prior to being hired.
