The open-air market kicks off its 17th season with over 140 vendors and live entertainment. The market spans three blocks on 48th Avenue in Ladner Village, from Elliott Street to Delta Street, and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It’s impressive and built to last.

The recently opened Delta Community Animal Shelter is a facility that’s night and day compared to the municipality’s longcriticized shelter on 80th Street, a cramped building that had been in operation since the early 1970s.

The fact the South Fraser Perimeter Road is being constructed right next to the old shelter made the need for a new facility all the more urgent. After a search lasting more than two years, Delta struck a deal with FortisBC last year to acquire a property on Hopcott Road not too far from the old shelter.

Not long afterward, plans were put forward to build a shelter that would better meet the needs of staff, volunteers and, most importantly, the animals.

Mayor Lois Jackson, who brought along her dog Maggie, and Delta chief administrative office George Harvie joined the Optimist recently for a tour of the new $4 million shelter.

The bright, clean facility, complete with treated concrete floors, is nothing like the old shelter, where cats had to be housed in a used trailer, while the living quarters for dogs weren’t much better.

“I really am delighted,” said Jackson. “I remember when we opened the other shelter many, many years ago. As the urban areas expanded, the facility didn’t expand to take care of the problems that had been created. We probably will never have to do this again for many, many years.”

Harvie agreed, adding many of the features of the 12,000-square-foot shelter were the result of input from volunteers and staff, including the need for better safety.

Animal control officer Jenna Ascroft provided the tour, offering a glimpse at rooms the old facility simply didn’t have.

The 24/7shelter, for example, has separate space for volunteers, a meet-andgreet room and even an outdoor patio area. The old shelter never had a fullsized stove in the kitchen, and that kitchen was often shared with animals. The new facility also has a multi-purpose room, whereas the old shelter’s garage often served that function.

The new building means the municipally-run shelter can have more education programs and be a much more comfortable place for volunteers, who often had to huddle outside the old shelter for orientations.

cages, can now mill about in more spacious rooms inside and can also wander to a fenced outdoor patio area.

The 18 dog pens don’t face each other as they did in the old shelter, which means less stress for the animals. A large grassy area outside the kennels is being eyed as an additional play area.

The dogs also have a covered indoor play section — two areas separated by a wall, in case some dogs don’t get along.

SDSS music department earns trip to Hollywood BY

They’re going to Hollywood.

Students and teachers in South Delta Secondary’s music department are still over the moon about their big medal haul at the Heritage Music Festival in New York.

The event in late April saw thousands of students from dozens of schools participate in the annual competition. The SDSS concert choir won a first place gold medal, the jazz choir won a second place gold and the jazz band took home a silver medal.

Even more impressive was the outstanding singing performance of Grade 11 student Elizabeth Garland, who won an individual award for her solo performance.

All the judges in the prestigious competition were either music professors or performers in concert choirs.

Thanks to their strong showing, the SDSS musical ensembles, called The South Delta Sounds, received a special invitation to take part in a festival next spring in Hollywood, California.

“The preparation is starting now really, what is the band going to look like, what students are we going to have next year, what repertoire do we want to do,” said Trevor Spilchen, director of the jazz band.

Spilchen said it was overwhelming at first going to New York to compete, but the festival is very welcoming with a positive atmosphere.

“The students had a great time. It was a great learning experience for everybody,” he added.

His jazz band finished just one point out of earning gold.

While in New York, the students took part in other activities, including attending a performance of the Harlem Gospel Choir and participating in workshops with Broadway actors.

Thrilled the school’s jazz choir earned its first gold, choral director Danielle Hamilton said they’re excited about going to Hollywood and believe they have an excellent shot and bringing home some more hardware.

Although some of the students are graduating this month, many are returning.

Hamilton said the older students are great leaders and

help mentor the newcomers.

Garland, who performed in both the concert choir and jazz band, earned a top spot for the Duke Ellington jazz classic Mood Indigo.

“It was very surprising when they said my name because there’s only 10 kids from the whole festival who are chosen for the solo maestro awards,” Garland said.

Garland said she hopes to pursue a music career after she graduates next year, something in the area of jazz.

SDSS principal Helene Gaudreault said the accomplishments of the music students are impressive and there’s tremendous enthusiasm about next year’s festival.

During their Hollywood trip next spring, the SDSS music students will also take part in Festival Disney.

A local paramedic has been honoured by his peers for leadership in his profession.

Brian Twaites was one of 25 to receive the Governor General Exemplary Service Medal in a ceremony at Government House in Victoria last week. He was one of only five to receive the award for the first time this year.

The Ladner resident has worked as a paramedic in Vancouver for 26 years.

“I was very honoured... it’s a very honoured award,” he said. “They don’t hand out a lot of them.”

Within the emergency medical services profession, the first-time presentation of the award is considered a career highlight.

The award recognizes professionals for excellence in pre-hospital emergency medical services. It honours paramedics and leaders who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency.

To be eligible for the award, recipients must complete 20 years of exemplary service and perform at a level above and beyond the expectations of their employment.

Twaites was nominated for his honesty and trustworthiness. Those attributes have led him to be appointed to provide medical coverage for visiting dignitaries, including during

the 2010 Winter Olympics, as well as for former U.S. president Bill Clinton and Prince Charles.

He is currently the B.C. Ambulance Service lead for the Public Access Defibrillator Program, an initiative aimed at getting hundreds of automated external defibrillators into public buildings.

The long-time Ladner resident said he doesn’t know what pushed him to be a paramedic.

“I wanted to do it ever since I was a kid,” he said.

“I don’t know what it was.”

He’s certainly had his fair share of memorable moments throughout his career.

As one of the first medics to be integrated into the Vancouver Police

Department’s public safety unit, Twaites was deployed on the night of the 2011 Stanley Cup riot. The medics were right in the thick of things with police officers, fully outfitted in riot gear.

“It was an amazing night,” he said. “It was an extremely busy night.”

A little closer to home, Twaites was recognized earlier this year by the Delta Police Department for his quick actions while offduty.

Twaites said he was out with his wife when they came across an unconscious man behind the wheel of his car. He performed CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive. The man had gone into cardiac arrest and Twaites’ quick actions helped save his life.

ALR eyed due to industrial shortage Commercial brokerage firm says supply not keeping pace with demand, particularly for large-scale operations BY

The Agricultural Land Reserve remains a potential source of new industrial land, particularly those parcels that are unproductive or not in production, says a commercial brokerage firm that deals with industrial property.

Avison Young released its latest report on Metro Vancouver’s industrial land supply last month, noting the rising pressure to accommodate large floorplate users continues to mount. The firm says vacancy in industrial buildings larger than 100,000 square feet tightened to 2.5 per cent this spring, while further analysis reveals the vacancy rate in large industrial space suitable for distribution/logistics uses is just 1.7 per cent.

Container traffic through Port Metro Vancouver, which is driving the demand, has resumed its upward trajectory after stalling in 2009, said Avison Young principal Rob Gritten in a news release.

Industry is eyeing unproductive farmland, but a report from Avison Young acknowledges that political considerations have curtailed discussions in that regard.

Infrastructure investment by the port and provincial and federal governments has not been matched by a corresponding rise in the availability of serviced industrial land suitable for logistics/distribution facilities, the report states.

“Developers increasingly need to be proactive and creative in order to secure sites of scale that are close to transportation networks and are suited for logistics/ distribution,” said Gritten.

“Once such sites are identified, assembled and

acquired, developers need to deliver product that meet the needs of large users.”

The report also highlights a Metro Vancouver report that concluded the region’s industrial land supply is projected to run out in the 2020s.

The limited supply of industrial land has been a prominent issue in Delta, where concerns have been raised about the future of ALR properties that may be end up being converted to other uses to service port expansion. The Avison

Several people are quoted in the report, including Tom Corsie, vice-president of real estate for Port Metro Vancouver, who said densification of the current industrial supply will be necessary.

Corsie also noted, “The SFPR should become a

catalyst for land use change along parts of its corridor, particularly in areas such as east Delta, Boundary Bay and at the TFN lands nearer to the Roberts Bank marine terminal complex.”

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington believes that could mean the Boundary Bay Airport will also be targeted, made all the more easier with the municipality relaxing the land uses at the airport to allow more industrial development.

As far as ALR land along SFPR, she said, “I do not

look at agricultural land for equitable distribution for industrial purposes at all.

Industry is just going to have to become as creative in developing its infrastructure and buildings as the urban environment has had to become.”

Huntington said the private sector might see Ashcroft as not economically viable now, but it will have no choice if it’s made clear no agricultural land in the Lower Mainland will be redeveloped.

Richmond Coun. Harold Steves, one of the founders of the ALR, agreed, saying, “They ignore the fact that both Ashcroft and Kamloops have been welcoming the idea of an inland port for decades.

It’s quite feasible to simply load the containers onto the trains that go right though there anyways.”

Steves noted the Avison Young report fails to acknowledge that 1,000 acres of industrially zoned land is available, but not in use, in Port Moody, where the city is hoping to redesignate that land.

If things go according to plan, a public hearing on the Century Group’s proposal for the controversial piece of Tsawwassen real estate will be held this fall. Prior to that, however, there could (make that should) be a municipal byelection to fill the council seat of Scott Hamilton, who became the Liberal MLA for Delta North in last month’s provincial election. There’s still some uncertainty over whether Hamilton will actually vacate his civic post due to the cost of holding a by-election, but I suspect the dual role will prove problematic and he’ll end up in Victoria full-time.

Should a by-election be required, it would likely be held in early October, which would provide an ideal opportunity to gather public input on the eve of a Southlands public hearing. Putting a question on the ballot wouldn’t add much cost-wise, but would give Delta council members a good indication how the public views the most recent Century proposal.

A referendum question is, admittedly, a rather narrow look at a complex issue, so it’s not without its drawbacks, but at the end of the day the decision on the Southlands, for both council members and the public, boils down to a simple yes or no.

I’m not necessarily a fan of government-by-referendum, figuring we elect people to make sound decisions on our behalf, but there’s certainly some validity in getting a snapshot of public sentiment.

It’s not a lot different than the Ipsos Reid survey Delta commissioned two or three years ago to get feedback on Tsawwassen planning issues.

The referendum wouldn’t have to be binding, and the question could even be broken into parts to get a better sense of what people are thinking. Would you support the project if there was less housing or if the housing was moved to another location on the site?

I realize you can’t turn the ballot into a questionnaire, but, as I mentioned, it’s a complex issue, so the more information civic leaders can glean from voters, the better position they’re in to make a decision.

A public hearing is all about gauging opinion on a particular subject prior to rendering a verdict. A referendum seems like a pretty darn good way to find out what the people are thinking.

COMMUNITY COMMENT A memo to all SDSS kids and especially 2013 grads...

I had the pleasure of attending the Athletics Banquet at SDSS on Tuesday to take photos of the many award winners from grades 8 to 12. As one of the only parents in attendance, I really appreciated the opportunity to see the players sit with their teams, peers and coaches, and watch them congratulate each other on their successes.

Apparently, it was a format used from yesteryear and I thought it was great.

Basically the school cafeteria was filled with the teams sitting with each other at the large tables.

In seasonal order, each team was asked to stand and be recognized and then the coaches would list names of a few athletes from each team who received awards of excel-

lence. They were invited to the podium and I took pictures of all the recipients so that parents will be able to see their kids receiving the awards later.

Keeping parents out of the picture was a good idea for this event and the athletes all seemed to really enjoy the atmosphere and were having much fun.

After the awards, coaches and teams were all treated to a buffet dinner prepared by future chefs from the culinary arts program under the tutelage of teacher and chef Gerald Worobetz.

Watching the proceedings, I couldn’t help but notice how quickly time has gone by. I was familiar with many of the grade 11 and 12 recipients, having coached several of them over the years in various sports, and by feeding them at special foods days in elementary school, socializing on school field trips, watching school plays and concerts and from hosting a variety of birthday parties and gatherings.

SDSS alumni and star soccer player Caitlin Davie gave an introductory speech at the event and I hope all in attendance listened carefully. She touched on an aspect of old school social networking

High school can build lifelong friendships and though you may not see your friends for an extended period, you know they are there.

The transition to young adults has been fun to watch and soon the 2013 graduates will move on to new chapters in their lives. The next couple of weeks will be a time to remember and I hope all the kids enjoy the moment at the upcoming grad events. I hope they remember the good times and don’t dwell on the not so good. I hope everyone plays safe and enjoys the moment.

I also hope they enjoy their Dry Grad and remember that it will be a very special time to reflect upon and possibly the last chance to say hello to someone in your grad class that has never crossed your path before. The school community and dozens of dedicated parents have worked their butts off so you can enjoy and remember this night, so have no less than a ton of fun!

Remember the good times and best of luck in the great big world!

Waterfront business owner shocked by opposition to revitalization plans

Editor: I, for one, am sick and tired of misinformed people creating fear amongst the community about development gone wild.

I recently attended the meeting at municipal hall regarding the proposed changes to height restrictions on Chisholm Street and was shocked at not

only the turnout but also the misinformation that had everyone up in arms.

Flyers depicting the Ladner waterfront as a Third World ghetto had been widely distributed and, yes, people came, flyers in hand, to beat the drum.

We are one of the businesses that did something positive for the area, but

since then it has remained sadly stagnant and mostly suitable only for people to let their dogs poop.

Without responsible development of Ladner’s downtown and waterfront areas, I fear the worst for local businesses as, before you know it, we’ll have Wally World and all that goes with it.

In the future, Ladner will have to create more excitement to attract people and local businesses, not get forced out by mega malls.

So to those that always say no to everything, please take your dogs to poop somewhere else.

Perimeter Road not going to help Tsaw. commuters Editor: Re: New SFPR unlikely to improve the experience for commuters, Community Comment, May 31 I share the same puzzlement as Steve Graham with regard to the Highway 17-South Fraser Perimeter Road junction. Compared with the grossly over engi-

neered interchange(s) of the SFPR at Highway 99, the Highway 17 interchange is cheap and poorly designed.

I also agree the one-lane overpass for those wishing to continue along Highway 17 is a fiasco waiting to happen.

The SFPR, despite the hype and hoopla, is a gross-

ly over engineered highway designed to give truckers a major highway, with the cost borne by the taxpayers; give business to the road builders, paid by the taxpayer; and destroy scarce and valuable farmland, which may help get land out of the ALR. For those wishing to go

to Vancouver (as the vast majority want to), the SFPR will increase journey times by taking motorists further away from the line-up for the George Massey Tunnel.

Benefits to be weighed against burdens as decision day nears for Southlands

Editor: The net benefit to Delta and its Tsawwassen residents can best be considered based on two separate considerations: the benefits of Delta owning 80 per cent of the land and the benefits of Century developing the remaining 20 per cent.

Benefits from Delta’s ownership of the 80 per cent include: • Century could no longer seek permission for uses other than agricultural, nor employ an offensive form of agriculture. But then there is no clear plan or commitment by Delta for the 80 per cent, rendering the land’s future use perhaps as uncertain as under Century ownership.

• There is no credible commitment by Delta to have the land farmed.

Century would pay for improvements, but there are no statements of intent by

Editor: I guess it’s time for someone to be honest.

Mayor Lois Jackson is telling us that Scott Hamilton is not resigning because she wants to save us the cost of a by-election. And it certainly sounds like she is the one pushing the buttons.

Hamilton says everyone he has talked to does not want him to resign, yet all the commentary in the press would prove otherwise.

In the past the mayor has happily told us that six councillors for a burg this size is not enough. Strange then that she is advocating council make do with five for the remainder of the term.

So what is the fuss all about? Mayor Jackson has a plan and that plan is to force through the Southlands come hell or high water. Seven binders of negative feedback from the community on the planning department counter are not enough for Jackson.

the public information sessions so now it is time for a vote. Without Hamilton’s support, where would that vote be? I think we can all guess what Hamilton’s departure would look like and it’s not pretty from the mayor’s seat.

So let’s stop all this nonsense. Hamilton has already missed his first public consultation meeting in Ladner. This cannot go on. Hamilton should relinquish his seat and move on to Victoria. Let democracy take its turn as it has for him.

There is a way council can really to do the right thing and save the taxpayers money. Hold the imminent by-election as required and add a referendum for South Delta about the Southlands.

Show us that you really are interested in public input and make the results binding. Through the referendum you would settle this issue once and for all and you would spend very little beyond the required by-election costs.

I see no persuasive net benefit to Tsawwassen’s residents from Delta’s ownership of the land. I can’t judge any benefits to the municipality as the longer-term use of the land is unclear.

By the time a child graduates high school, they will spend close to two full years in a classroom. Teachers have a huge impact on their students.

Like everything else, there is excellence and mediocrity in teaching. My Grade 6 teacher told me I would not amount to much. My Grade 13 English teacher Mrs. Dodson created a learning atmosphere full of excitement and affirmation and helped me to believe I was a gift.

We expect teachers to not only educate but also to increasingly raise our children. Where once wisdom came as well from home, faith groups and community, teachers and the Internet are expected to fill the void. Alongside these huge expectations, teachers have become a favou-

rite public scapegoat due to their pay and employment benefits.

I know several teachers who I love dearly and respect. They work long hours and put deep thought into education plans, special activities and report cards. They bring work home.

They volunteer for extra duties.

They take courses, often at their own expense in time and money. They give back to the community. Many of those teachers make a substantial contribution to our faith community and others. They care deeply.

In Afghanistan, teachers are the first target for insurgent assassins because an educated community puts out the fire of oppression, fundamentalism and injustice. Afghan parents and children adore teachers.

So should we.

One of Ladner’s biggest attractions returns to town this weekend.

The Ladner Village Market kicks off its 17th season Sunday with a full slate of vendors.

“It’s going to be fantastic,” says Tracey McKnight, one of the market organizers.

The open-air market spans three blocks on 48th Avenue from Elliott Street to Delta Street and runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The

market features over 140 vendors and many local merchants.

The season consists of market dates on the second and fourth Sunday of the month from June through to August and the second Sunday of September.

Those looking for a bite to eat while doing a little shopping this market season will have plenty of options.

“This year we have a wonderful complement of fresh foods that people can pick up and munch while they’re wandering throughout the market,” McKnight

A range of musical performers will play at the market this season. Blues artists Kenny (Blues Boss) Wayne and Wes Mackey, who are Ladner Village Market regulars, are scheduled to perform on Sunday.

“It has become a tradition that they open our market it seems,” says McKnight.

“They love the atmosphere of the market. They create a lot of that with their music.”

Wayne, a 2006 Juno Award winner for Blues Album of the Year, is set to perform from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mackey is scheduled

to play from 1 to 4 p.m.

Other musical performers for this season include George Ellenton’s Frankly Yours Frank Sinatra tribute, four-piece rock band Astro’s Collar, Juno Award-nominated Latin singer Marlin Ramazzini, Time Machine, Tanga, Rumba Calzada and returning favourite Mojo Zydeco.

Ladner Bandfest returns

Bring your lawn chairs to Memorial Park this weekend to enjoy two full days of old-fashioned concerts in the park at Ladner Bandfest.

Twenty-one adult concert bands, comprising about 700 musicians, will descend on Ladner to give free performances to the public.

The joyful sounds will include every form of band music such as Broadway musicals, swing, overtures, folk music, Canadiana, Sousa marches and more.

“For our 10th annual Ladner Bandfest the following year, 2014, we have invited the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy from Esquimalt, so they are sending reps to check us out this year,” says Jantzen.

and for the public. We believe Ladner Bandfest is the largest gathering of adult musicians in all of Canada.”

Now that we’ve acknowledged the importance of tires, how do we go about making the correct choice?

As with any purchasing decision, knowledge is power.

The first step is determining what size of tire you need. Just like how different people need different sized shoes, different cars need different sized tires.

But unlike shoes, which are largely defined by a single number and restricted by your feet size, tires are exponentially more complicated with an infinite combination of size, diameter, compound type and character.

Let’s look at two examples: P225/60R16 97T and LT265/70R17 121R. Admittedly, these appear a bit like a code, but after breaking the measurements down, it’s not so bad.

The prefix, a P or LT, simply indicates the tire is designed for either passenger car or light truck. Some SUVs and smaller trucks are fitted with P rated tires for improved ride comfort, but if you are routinely carrying heavier loads, a LT rated tire would suit your needs better.

The next group of digits, 225 and 265 in our examples, tells you how wide the cross-section of the tire is in millimetres. The bigger the number, the wider the tire.

The following number is the aspect ratio. This tells you the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tire’s width. So, the sidewall of our passenger tire is 60 per cent of 225 mm, or 135 mm. Understanding the aspect ratio becomes most important when changing wheel sizes, which we will discuss in more detail later.

The R lets you know it is a radial tire as opposed to a bias-ply tire, which would be designated by a D. Biasply tires are no longer used in passenger vehicle applications.

The rim size in inches is noted next. In our examples, the car has 16-inch wheels and the truck has 17s. Obviously, a 16-inch tire will not fit on a 17-inch wheel or vice versa.

Next is the load-carrying capacity. As you can see in our example, the LT has a higher load rating at 121 versus 97 for the passenger tire. It is highly recommended you never select a tire with a lower load rating than the manufacturer’s specifications. But as mentioned earlier, it is acceptable to increase the rating if you are often carrying a lot of weight.

The last item is the tire’s speed rating. This reflects the tire’s ability to dissipate heat. Driving at high speeds for extended periods of time, like on long highway commutes, creates heat buildup within the tire.

Too much heat increases the likelihood of a failure.

Again, do not fit a tire with a lower speed rating than the one recommended, but if the bulk of your driving is on the highway, feel free to move up a rating or two.

Now that we’ve broken down the basic ingredients of a tire, we need to determine what makes one better than another. Well, that largely depends on your specific needs.

Some questions you need to ask yourself are: Would you prefer a harder, more performance oriented tire or a softer, more comfortable one? Also, how do you rate the importance of fuel economy, tread wear and noise reduction?

A sixth place finish doesn’t do justice of just how close the South Delta Sun Devils came to taking a serious run at their second ever provincial girls soccer championship.

The Sun Devils went unbeaten in round-robin play but saw their title hopes dashed by a somewhat controversial format that puts more emphasis on preliminary games than any other provincial high school sport.

South Delta opened with an impressive 4-0 win over Churchill, then slipped past Mt. Baker 1-0 before battling pre-tournament favourite Argyle Pipers to a 1-1 draw. That left the Sun Devils and Argyle tied atop of their group with 2-0-1 records but the North Shore school advanced to the semi-finals with a better goal differential.

The Pipers went on to win the championship while South Delta could finish no better than fifth. The locals defeated Stelly’s 1-0, then dropped a 3-2 decision to Kelowna with a shorthanded line-up on Saturday.

With Fraser Valley champion Terry Fox also edged out of a semifinal berth after going unbeaten, the tournament draw will once again be re-examined before next year’s event. A quarter-final playoff round is apparently out of the question due to time constraints, however, penalty

kicks maybe added.

“It would nice to at least have a clear winner of those games and it would take no more than five extra minutes,” said Sun Devils head coach Stephen Burns. “Looking back, we actually beat ourselves in the Mt. Baker game. Argyle handled them easily (5-0) and we just came out a little flat after playing so well against Churchill. Another goal would have been enough to put us through.

“Still, it was an outstanding tournament for the girls and Brent (Sweeney) and I are really proud of them. That’s the sixth time in 12 years the first place team from our group has gone on to win the championship.”

The Sun Devils at least went into the Argyle game knowing they needed a result. They were on the verge of handing the Pipers their first loss of the season before surrendering the tying goal with just four minutes remaining.

South Delta played what Burns described as its “best game of the season” to beat Stelly’s before having a wide edge in territorial play against Kelowna but not getting the result.

The Sun Devils lose just one player to graduation and are deep in young talent. This year’s roster featured five Grade 9s and even three Grade 8s were called-up for the championships.

South Delta Sun Devils defeated the Churchill Bulldogs 4-0 en route to a sixth place finish at the B.C. “AAA” Girls Soccer Championships in North Vancouver.

Former Pacer great coaching at summer hoop camp A youth basketball camp featuring one of the greatest players ever to come out of this area is coming to Tsawwassen this summer.

The Split Second Basketball Camp is slated for July 15-19 at Southpointe Academy. Two daily sessions are planned — 9.a.m. to noon for boys and girls entering Grades 4-7 and 1-4 p.m. for Grades 8-12.

The cost is $160 which includes a reversible jersey.

The camp is run by three former players who thrived at the collegiate level and beyond, including Navi Sekon. The former Delta Pacer

standout was the province’s top scorer back in 1993, leading the Ladner school to its first B.C. tourney berth in 14 years. He still holds the Pacers single game scoring record with 64 points.

Sekhon went on to thrive at the collegiate and university levels for Langara and Calgary respectively, earning All-Canadian honours in the process.

Up until recently, he was still playing at a high level and annually showcased his game at the Dolphin Park 3-on-3 outdoor tournament in Richmond.

The camp instructors also include founder Eric Butler — a Delta firefighter who enjoyed an outstanding career at UBC as a CIS all-star and All-Canadian. He also played professionally in Europe for eight years with stops in France, Germany and Austria.

“I started Split Second basketball three years ago to pass along my lifetime of learning in the game,” said Butler. “After years of practice and studying the very best players, I came to realize that the difference between success and failure on the court comes from executing the main

skills a split second faster than your competition.

“Our program emphasizes this to players and teaches them habits that make them as time efficient as possible. Despite the fact that we’re teaching high level skills, our approach is suitable to a range of players, from beginners to high school all-stars.”

A six game in three day marathon ended in gold for the Delta Islanders Bantam “B” lacrosse team at the recent Hyack Tournament in New Westminster. Strong leadership from captain Cole Thodos and assistants Mark Yingling, James Greig and Ben Mitchell saw a short benched and hungry Delta squad out hustle and outlast its opponents. Hard work, team play and determination were provided by all players throughout the tournament. Charuk named to national volleyball team

It will be a busy few months traveling the world as a member of Canada’s national women’s volleyball team for Lucy Charuk.

The 23-year-old from Tsawwassen has been named to Canada’s 24-member squad following a month-long tryout under head coach Arnd Ludwig.

The national team will compete at three international events this summer: the Pan Am Cup in Lima, Peru June 8-17, the World University Games in Kazan, Russia July 6-16 and the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) Championships in Omaha, Nebraska

September 14-22.

Team Canada will also host a Canada Cup/Exhibition Series in Winnipeg from Aug. 19-23.

Charuk, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, earned a full-ride scholarship to the University of Houston after graduating from South Delta secondary. She was named first team all-conference in her junior and senior seasons with Cougars.

She has since been playing professionally in Croatia for ZOK Splitt 1700. She is one of just 12 players who have been selected to play in Peru.

Roadway Towing Ltd. has two positions available for tow truck operators. Applicants must reside in the area in order to meet our contract obligations.
