Huntington upset over minister meeting BY

The relationship between the municipal council and local MLA Vicki Huntington seems to be getting more acrimonious.

“I certainly want to work with Delta and with Mr. (Delta North MLA Scott) Hamilton, but in the end cooperation is

a two-way street,” Huntington told the Optimist this week.

It’s been obvious for some time there’s frostiness between Mayor Lois Jackson and Huntington, who at one time were political allies on council.

The independent MLA had previously expressed frustration that Jackson, as well as council and civic staff, have been

bypassing her when it comes to dealing with local issues that have provincial connections.

However, the issue didn’t really come to the surface until this spring’s provincial election campaign. Coun. Bruce McDonald, who was running for the Liberals in Delta South, got a negative reaction from the audience at the first all-candidates debate

when he stated the incumbent MLA hasn’t met with city council. The issue would also come up on several other occasions during the election, including McDonald’s campaign claiming Huntington didn’t have a significant role in the municipality securing funding for river channel dredging.

Marking a milestone

Delta’s fire department celebrates 50 years of career firefighting in the community BY

elta’s firefighters are this year marking a milestone in the department’s history — 50 years of having career firefighters.

As Ladner, the first area of Delta with a non-native settlement, began to grow in the early 1900s, so did the incident of fire.

The community’s fire department started out as many did at the time – with volunteers, and the task of fighting fires fell to local residents and merchants who would form bucket brigades.

There were no water lines in the early part of the last century and to fight a fire residents would have to access water in wells and drainage ditches fed by the river.

In 1911, a water system was installed along with fire hydrants and in 1915 the first local fire brigade was formed.

Delta’s first fire hall was set up in the municipal barn at the north end of Elliott Street and an alarm system was established.

After a serious fire in 1929, the municipality took a larger role in the development of the department.

In 1943, the department had about 16 volunteers and Delta purchased its first fire truck. It was a right-hand-drive, open cab Ford chassis that was outfitted with a water tank and other firefighting equipment.

The little fire hall in Ladner remained the only one in Delta until after the Second World War. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, residents living in the Beach Grove area began petitioning council for better firefighting in that area. In 1948, the group received a grant and built a small fire hall (Hall 2) on 16th Avenue and purchased a Studebaker fire truck.

The next year, North Delta residents formed their own fire department (Hall 3) and work began on a new hall in Ladner (Hall 1).

Things continued to grow and change after the war. In the 1950s, new trucks and

equipment were purchased. However, the completion of the George Massey Tunnel in 1959 — in addition to the opening of the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal and the establishment of Highway 99 — changed Delta, and the small fire department, forever.

With the booming population and new found freedom with the establishment of the tunnel and highway, volunteer numbers began to dwindle as a significant number of residents began commuting out of the area for work. As a result, Delta hired its first full-time career firefighters in 1963 — Walter Husband, Kenneth Campbell, L.A. Davidson and John Tapio.

Times have certainly changed over the years. As the area continued to grow, and volunteer numbers dwindled, more and more paid firefighters were hired. What started as a crew of four and three fire halls now stands at a department with 162

a policy that only people who have contributed funds to a project will be invited to the stage or to speak, so the effect has been to keep her from the stage at every single event, Huntington said, adding that even Coun.

“Immediately after the last election (mid-May), I personally asked the mayor for an appointment and was told to contact her staff. We did and received the response that she was unavailable until at least the end of July and that they would call our office at that time,” she said.

“Similarly, I invited Scott Hamilton to attend a briefing on student bussing that I had arranged with the Ministry of Education. He was unable to attend, but

I even copied him on my memo to the chair of the school board and superintendent.

“Needless to say, I am disappointed that my attempts to work collegially on matters important to South Delta are being frustrated,” she said.

“The meeting between Mr. Hamilton, the mayor and the minister of transport was held in Delta South and was solely about Delta South issues and my attendance would have been appropriate. At the end of the day, politics is about elected representatives working together on the issues that matter — outside of Question Period, MLAs are collegial and generally have a good relationship — regardless of their political affiliation.”

Huntington added, “I hope that we can build a better atmosphere of cooperation in Delta...we have

firefighters (179 total staff) and seven fire halls.

Husband, who still lives in Ladner, had been a volunteer for eight years when he was hired as the first paid firefighter in Delta.

He said the men were stationed in Tsawwassen and North Delta as Ladner and East Delta continued to maintain a strong core of volunteers.

The paid firefighters worked day shifts Monday through Friday with volunteers covering evenings and weekends.

Times were different then. There were no radios in the trucks. Once a firefighter was dispatched to a call, there was no way to get updates, call in back up or know if any one else was responding.

“You just looked in the rearview mirror of your truck and hoped to God that someone was following you,” Husband said, common ground, common constituents, and common issues. Working together can bring good results, but it requires the will to do so. And I think it will also require Mr. Hamilton to decide whether he wants to be an MLA for Delta North, or whether he wants to remain a municipal councilor — right now he is straddling the fence and the informal norms of protocol are being ignored.”

Huntington noted, “Delta South elected an Independent MLA and I would hate to think this was a deliberate insult to the people of our community — once an election is over, the people expect our officials to respect their legitimate and democratic choice.”

Asked to respond, Jackson noted she received the invitation to last week’s press conference just prior to the event and that it was

chuckling.

Husband and his wife started a scrapbook when he joined the department in the 1950s. Over the years, he’s accumulated any and all information he can about the fire department, even after he retired as deputy chief in 1985. Today he has books and binders overflowing with photos, clippings and documents chronicling the changes in the department throughout the years.

All that information, newspaper clippings and old photos were put to good use as the department got ready to mark 50 years of career firefighters. It formed the basis of a video looking back over the history of the department, which was shown at a special celebration last month.

“I think for a lot of the younger people it was a real eye opener,” said fire chief Dan Copeland.

Delta fire union (International Association of Firefighters Local 1763) president Brad Wilson, a second-generation Delta firefighter, said the event was organized to recognize the importance of having a career fire department.

He said there was a lot of support for organizing the event and producing the video from the outset.

“For the newer guys, their eyes were just wide open,” he said.

To honour that and the anniversary, the department released challenge coins. One was given to each firefighter, current and retired.

Challenge coins have become a tradition in the fire service in the last 10 years. The small medallion was designed by members of the Delta firefighters union, IAFF Local 1763, with input from management and incorporates different flashers and logos from years past as well as Delta’s coat of arms. It is meant to symbolize union and management working together to advance the department’s vision and mission goals.

“Firefighting is a calling,” Copeland said. “You go into it because you have a desire to help people and solve problems.”

As far as Huntington coming to the mayor’s office, Jackson said, “I have spoken with my staff and Vicki did call at about the time we were leaving for Norway.

“This was to be a ‘courtesy’ visit, as I understand it, without a particular item in mind. My calendar is very, very full and the ‘trouble visits’ take precedence over the ‘courtesy calls.’ My staff stated that I could possibly be available from mid-to-late July and that when (assistant) Dona returned from her vacation she would contact the MLA. Simple as that. No conspiracy here, despite the fact that MLA Huntington is attempting to create one.”

Jackson added she has always had an open door policy to talk with the community through meetings or e-mails.

Work at Ladner Trunk Road and Arthur Drive nearing completion BY

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for residents and business owners who have endured months of disruptions around one of Ladner’s busiest intersections.

The construction at Ladner Trunk Road and Arthur Drive is entering the last stages of the project, Delta engineering director Steven Lan said this week, and the work should be “substantially complete” by the end of the month.

Paving is expected to start by the middle of next week and the intersection should be “fully operational by the end of the month,” Lan said.

He said there will be a few more minor aspects of the project to be completed in the ensuing weeks like landscaping, which cannot be completed until fall.

Work on the intersection has been on going in one form or another since January.

Utility work had to be completed before the crews could start on improving the

roadway and intersection.

Upgrades include: widening of Arthur Drive and lane reconfiguration to improve traffic flow; stamped and coloured crosswalks; a decorative sidewalk; landscaping with rain gardens; decorative street lights with banners and hanging baskets; as well as a concrete (wooden in appearance) boardwalk across the Chillukthan Slough.

Delta agrees to new funding formula with FVRL BY

Delta will gain a modest saving after agreeing to a new funding formula with the Fraser Valley Regional Library.

Council last week endorsed a recommendation that will see the municipality pay into the system under a revised formula, one that will result in a net decrease of 1.5 per cent on Delta’s library budget. It works out to approximately $48,000,

a saving that will be phased in over the next couple of years and allocated back to enhancing Delta’s library services.

“This is as a result of numerous meetings between the manager of finance for Fraser Valley (regional library) and our director of finance, as well as other members. This is a much more predictable funding formula. We’re also pleased with going forward with a five-year operating agreement which sets out

our roles and responsibilities,” said Coun. Jeannie Kanakos, Delta’s representative on the FVRL board.

Delta has three public libraries that are part of the regional chain. The FVRL is funded directly by its member municipalities, which contributed annually according to a funding formula that had been developed more than 15 years ago.

The formula, called a true usage formula, has gone through several minor

revisions over the years, but there were concerns regarding the process, transparency and financial equity.

That was evident the last couple of years when Delta council begrudgingly approved increases to its share of the library system.

Earlier this year, the FVRL submission to Delta would see the municipality’s share increase by 2.65 per cent ($82,000 more than the previous year), bumping Delta’s total annual contribution to $3.19 million.

Council initially balked, but eventually approved the increase, making a familiar complaint about the steadily increasing costs.

In 2012, council let its unhappiness be known about the FVRL wanting Delta’s portion to go up by 5.83 per cent, settling instead on a 3.3 per cent increase.

In a later presentation to council, Mary O’Callaghan, FVRL director of corporate services, explained that library staff is constantly on the lookout for gaps in services and redundancies to make the system as efficient as possible.

She also noted the funding formula had been in place since the 1990s, so it was time for a review anyway.

Boreen overcomes hurdles

Looking at 18-year-old Colton Boreen today, it would be hard to imagine how far he has come.

The Tsawwassen teen graduated from South Delta Secondary School last month and was awarded the 2013 Shirley Claridge Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is handed out annually to an SDSS student “who exemplifies academic diligence and who has experienced or supported another through a difficult life situation,” said Shani Dendy, Claridge’s daughter.

“Colton is such a humble and kind young man with an incredible life story.”

Today, Boreen is the picture of health and physical fitness.

He’s active, eats a healthy diet and is even trying his hand at some amateur bodybuilding.

This wasn’t always the case.

At the age of four, Boreen was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer. After months of living in pain, doctors at B.C. Children’s Hospital found a tumour the size of a grapefruit surrounding his left hip.

It was a rough time for his family. At the same time his younger sister Morgan was diagnosed with a seizure disorder.

“The community helped a lot back then,” he remembers, adding that a trust fund was set up and fundraisers were held to help the young family deal with expenses as both children were in and out of hospital frequently.

Boreen endured months

Driver fails border breath test The following are some of the calls of interest the Delta police responded to in the South Delta area between Tuesday July 2 and Monday, July 8: Tsawwassen • July 2, 2:33 a.m., Point Roberts border crossing: A man accessing the U.S. was given a breathalyzer test which resulted in a “Fail” reading. Further investigation determined that the driver also had an outstanding warrant in Richmond on another matter.

• July 2, 10:05 p.m., 1100-block 56th Street: Complainant called to advise that his unlocked bike had been stolen from the bicycle rack in front of the Safeway store at approximately 8:45 p.m..

The bike is described as a black Kuwahara ‘70s single speed racing bike. White front wheel, black back wheel, and black/white seat.

Value $200.

•July 3, 4:23 p.m., 5500block 9th Avenue: During a patrol of Winskill Park seven youths were observed drinking beer. There was also a strong odour of marijuana. A search of backpacks revealed two small bags of marijuana, paraphernalia and a knife in the nearby grass, all of which were seized by police. The youths were given a verbal warning, and sent on their way.

• July 3, 6:31 p.m.: Complainant called Delta police to advise that her car

was stopped by the Deas Island Freeway Patrol as her car license plate was showing only a partial ICBC decal. It appeared that someone had tried to detach the entire decal. She was advised to call ICBC to obtain a new one.

• July 4, 2:10 p.m., 5200-block Glen Abbey Pl: Police were advised of a residential alarm. Upon attendance police were met by the homeowner who reported that upon returning home her alarm was making an unfamiliar beeping.

The investigator found that rear patio door had pry marks on the frame but entry had not been gained. Nothing stolen. Damage about $50.

A canvass of the neighbourhood proved negative.

• July 5, 4:37 a.m., 1600-block 56th Street: Complainant reported that overnight his vehicle had been stolen from the underground parking lot. In his car were a cell phone, loose change and some small tools. Value about $300.

• July 5, 9 a.m., 1600-block 56th Street: Complainant advised police that overnight his car was broken into while parked in the underground lot.

Entry gained by damaging door handle and forcing the lock. The ignition was punched but suspect failed to start the vehicle. Two GPS devices valued at $500

were stolen from the glove compartment. There were no witnesses to the theft.

Ladner • July 2, 2:33 a.m., 4200block River Road West: Complainant reported he was alerted to the sound of breaking glass. He exited the residence and found that someone had broken the parked vehicle’s rear driver’s side window. A large rock was found on the ground next to the vehicle.

No one was observed nearby. Police attended and a K9 unit was deployed with negative results.

Damage $300.

• July 6, 4:36 a.m., 5100-block Whitworth Crescent: Complainant advised police that his daughter’s vehicle had been struck by another vehicle while parked in front of his house. The other vehicle and driver failed to remain at the scene. Investigators successfully followed a trail of engine coolant from the scene and located the vehicle involved in the accident a few blocks away. A young man admitted being the driver involved in the accident and was charged accordingly. Photos were taken of the accident scene and the vehicles involved and will be submitted for evidence.

• July 3, 7:32 p.m., 5000-block 44th Avenue: Police responded to an

anonymous report of a possible fight at the field behind Ladner Elementary School. The suspects denied any intent to fight and no injuries were observed.

As the odour of marijuana was detected, a search of a backpack revealed three small bags of marijuana and paraphernalia, which was seized. Consent search of another bag revealed a prohibited folding knife, which was seized for destruction.

Suspects were warned, sent on their way and left without issues. Drug form submitted.

• July 7, 1:15 p.m., 5500block Ladner Trunk Road: A driver was proceeding westbound on Ladner Trunk Road when he rear ended another vehicle. There were minor injuries in the vehicle struck from behind.

Police and fire attended.

The injured declined to be driven to a hospital. As an odour of alcohol was detected on the breath of the offending driver, two breath samples both resulted in fail readings. This resulted in a 90-day suspension and the impoundment of vehicle.

• July 8, 8:55 a.m., 4600-block Evergreen Lane: Complainant called to advise that his car had had two slashed tires while parked overnight in the underground parking area.

There are no witnesses and video surveillance canvass proved negative. Damage amount not specified.

Market put Ladner on the map TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It used to be that if you told someone you live in Ladner, they would often need to scratch their head to figure out exactly where on the map you were talking about.

The George Massey Tunnel would be the most often referenced landmark, with the highway to the ferry terminal also getting some cranial traction. Those with a natural bent might use Westham Island’s Reifel Bird Sanctuary as a guide, but for many, our little slice of paradise on the western-most edge of the region wasn’t necessarily top of mind.

That’s changed in recent years and it has everything to do with an event that continues to grow in stature: the Ladner Village Market. The market not only helps identify our quaint little town, but actually brings people out to see it for themselves. Nowadays when you tell people you’re from Ladner, the response is often: “That’s where the market is, right?” Or even better: “Hey, when’s the next market?”

Now in its 17th year, the Ladner Village Market has become an institution in these parts, drawing thousands to 48th Avenue on sunny Sundays throughout the summer (the next installment is this Sunday). It turns that stretch of road into a sea of humanity seven times a season as shoppers flock to the village in search of not only a wide range of products, but also to have a good time while procuring them.

The reason the market has proven so popular is because the organizers have developed a successful template and stuck to it. They hand pick the 140 or so vendors, ensuring all sectors are adequately covered and that there’s sufficient variety to keep regular shoppers coming back. There’s quality live entertainment for every market, plenty of food choices and a festive atmosphere that makes what you buy often take a back seat to the experience you enjoy.

The McKnights of South Coast Casuals, the Frasers of Heritage House Interiors and all the others responsible for the Ladner Village Market deserve a big thank-you for developing and maintaining a first class attraction.

Even if you’ve already reached your seasonal limit on garden art or handcrafted jewelry (I know, there might not be such a thing for some people), the market still holds an attraction. At its very heart, it can simply be an enjoyable outing on a lazy summer afternoon, a destination that’s accessible via flip-flops rather than the family car. It’s a treasure in your own back yard.

And it’s also helped to put Ladner on the map.

It’s time to clean house with the next municipal election STEVE GRAHAM

COMMUNITY COMMENT Delta council is about halfway through its current term.

I have been musing about the current state of affairs. We know that three of the current six councillors are so thrilled with their municipal jobs that they decided to run for MLA in the recent election.

Of these, Bruce McDonald and Sylvia Bishop were left in the minors, while Scott Hamilton moved up to the Bigs. We can expect McDonald and Bishop to be less than enthusiastic about having to spend another four years in the minors; but Hamilton is showing them that you really can have it all.

Most people would be delighted to move on to a new job that pays three times more, but Scott Hamilton just can’t bear to give up his old one; so he is keeping them both.

One might wonder why.

Is Hamilton concerned that a successor might not vote exactly as he would, thereby thwarting the true will of the people?

Is he concerned that his quest to turn South Delta into the new Coquitlam might be vanquished?

It’s just bizarre. It’s hard to believe, but it does appear that Hamilton went into the provincial election with no strategy about what he would do if he won.

He certainly will fit in in Victoria; but he should resign his council seat forthwith.

The folks that invested their time and money into Bishop and McDonald’s municipal campaigns are likely relieved that they lost in the provincial election, but they have to be wondering why they bothered and whether they will reinvest next fall.

Who would support candidates who don’t want to be there?

The public in Ladner is riled up about a rezoning, as is the public in North Delta, and soon the circus will return to Tsawwassen.

So where is the mayor amid all this civic angst? Norway. It was reported in the July 14 Optimist that (1) the port has no intention

or plan to put a crude oil or LNG capability in Deltaport, and (2) the mayor and CAO are going to Norway nevertheless on the public tab to inspect crude oil and LNG facilities, notwithstanding (3) there are such facilities in Vancouver, Montreal and Halifax as well as Cherry Point, Anacortes, Long Beach and so on.

Stuff like this makes the job of being an occasional Optimist columnist a pure delight. Simply put, the mayor and her entourage (she always travels with one) are off on a vacation to Europe at your expense.

It sure beats listening to people whine about mega-developments. It’s not a precedent either.

Remember the trip to India to ‘develop port business’?

Or maybe you missed the small item on page 4 of the May 20, 2011 Optimist: “The contact with royalty was not finished, however, as Mayor Lois Jackson and her administrative assistant attended a reception and dinner [in London], and later shared the Royal Box with Prince Andrew.” That trip was otherwise unreported.

The people have spoken Editor: Not too long ago there was a “divine right” to “rule and govern” by such proponents as Louis XVI of France and Czar Nicholas of Russia, both of whom lost their heads in the process because of their autocratic decisions and not listening to valid complaints by the “demos” — the people.

Canadians consider their governments at all levels democratic.

The people directly affected by council’s past and future decisions have spoken very clearly on several occasions not to entertain a proposal for developing the Southlands.

When Krista Engelland ran for mayor she topped all polls in Tsawwassen with her outspoken opposition to Southlands development.

When Sylvia Bishop ran for council, she also topped all polls in Tsawwassen because she opposed the Southlands development.

Council received approximately 250 letters in favour

and about 1,250 against development.

This should convince even the most compliant councillor that the demos, the people, have spoken.

Is the Southlands worth the additional staff hours of work at taxpayers expense to please a lean speculator — I don’t think so.

The people most effected have clearly spoken. It is worth it to the developer?

Yes, like several million dollars. The proposal is not worth it to the people who

have consistently opposed it. No, it is a degradation of Tsawwassen and its constituents.

Has there been a thorough evaluation in light of the new flood construction levels?

Has there been a thorough independent study of buildings on a flood plane? \Has there been a study of the potential hydrological problems of this annually flooded land?

Specifically the demos, the people, don’t want to see in that process that this process might potentially take three years that would bestow 46,000 truck per annum, at 300 days a year and eight hours a day, one would enjoy 20 trucks per hour, or one every three minutes, followed by an untold number of cement trucks, followed by a multitude of lumber trucks plus pick up trucks for trades people.

Only an autocrat could approve this scheme of the century.

How can one claim Tsawwassen is stagnating?

Editor: Re: Community continues to change, letter to the editor, July 3 Yes, Mr. McLaren, this community continues to change. Since I’ve moved here in 1981 I have seen many changes including the Waterford, new apartment buildings, a new private school, the demolition of a couple of schools which made way for new homes, lots of infill development, Tsawwassen Springs development, and, of course, we have yet to witness the development of Century’s

Northgate or the two new apartment buildings on 12th Avenue, all of which have been approved by Delta council.

I fail to see how one can say that Tsawwassen is stagnating. I wonder what the impact of currently approved but not yet started developments will be on the community and especially on traffic on 56th Street.

While I recognize the right of everyone to express his or her opinion, I agree with previous letter writer Peter White in his criticism.

Should development on

Southlands ever proceed, which I sure hope not, it will impact those of us who live in Tsawwassen and especially those who must use 56th Street to travel in and out of the community.

It will not impact those who live in Ladner or North Delta. McLaren says that with growth comes a temporary increase in traffic, dump trucks, parking, etc. The proposed housing, commercial, etc. on 20 per cent of the agricultural property Southlands is high density and will not just bring a temporary increase

in traffic, dump trucks, parking, etc. It is estimated that 60,000 trucks of fill would be needed before any development can even begin.

This alone means that the increase in traffic will be far from temporary. Since the development itself is estimated to take place over the course of 15 years, this is also hardly temporary A few months of temporary inconvenience in Ladner is nothing compared to what could happen here.

As far as parking, we do not know yet how the devel-

opment would affect those living on 56th Street or in Boundary Bay, especially as the developer has reduced the parking that is normally allowed for new developments.

I suggest that the proposed development would have many negative effects on those who live near the proposed development and in fact anyone who uses 56th Street.

There are many other concerns, as well, as noted in the seven binders filled with correspondence on display at Winskill Aquatic

Centre. Within these binders, I see few names of residents who are anxious for the development to take place.

The property now known as Southlands was purchased when it was in the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Although removed from the ALR, the land is still zoned agricultural and in Metro Vancouver’s Green Zone.

I believe that the entire property should remain agricultural and put to such uses. It is ideal for soil based organic farming.

Editor: Re: Location matters in opinions, Murphy’s Law, July 5 As one of the letter writers who criticized Peter White’s blinkered opinion that in turn criticized Joyce Schmidt for daring to publicly comment in favour of the Southlands proposed development, let me now criticize what you write on July 5 — that can easily be taken to an inappropriate and ineffective extreme.

You argue — again in the instance of the Southlands as an example — for a greater local say on matters before the community.

You make a general reasonable point, but you make it wrongly.

Of course, people who may be looking at whatever happens in the instance of the Southlands (Tsawwassen), or in the instance of Marina Gardens Estates (Ladner) or in the instance of MK Delta Lands

Another letter writer — Tom Griffing — also on July 5, makes some sensible arguments in this matter.

The developments that I mention as examples in this discussion affect the entire community in many ways.

They don’t just change the view of people to the west of the Southlands, looking east toward Boundary Bay.

Delta isn’t a particularly large community.

If somebody is doing something in Tsawwassen that raises concerns for someone living in North Delta or in Ladner then those people living in those “outlying” communities, as I believe some would have them defined, darned well better comment on those events. If they don’t then they’re failing their civic responsibilities.

Isn’t that an issue that

we complain long and hard and publicly about every time another election rolls around?

C’mon; we need to encourage any and all constructive expressions of opinion on civic matters. Or are you simply, by your editorial comment on July 5, trying to preserve another opportunity to write about political apathy when another electoral cycle descends upon us?

Rotary supports Reach

The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen recently donated $1,500 to Reach Child and Youth Development Society’s teen social program. The program has a cost of $22,000 per year and is designed to help teach social skills to autistic youths.

“The program helps these youths with prominent developmental challenges better connect to the community, fit in and have fun,” says Reach executive direc-

tor Renie D’Aquila. “Our many thanks to Rotary for helping with these funds.”

Reach is currently raising $4 million to build a 20,000-square-foot community-based child development centre in Ladner at Memorial Park. Building in the heart of the community will remove access barriers, give more children the critical services they need and link families to other community services more effectively.

Tsawwassen teenager Julia Lowndes has raised over $1,600 for the Delta Hospital Foundation.

Lowndes asked for donations instead of gifts at her 15th birthday party held last month.

She’s following the footsteps of her older sister Michelle who raised money five years ago for the foundation.

“I got really inspired towards that, too,” said Lowndes, noting her fundraising efforts will go towards ultrasound equipment at the local hospital.

She also said she’s interested in pursuing a career in radiation therapy.

Lowndes said she wanted to thank those who helped her raise the money and that she hoped others would consider donating to the foundation.

The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make nonlawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Finding comfort I recently had the opportunity to fly out to Michigan to see friends.

My flight had a layover in Dallas, Texas.

On my way to Dallas I was able to see both the fires and also the devastation it has caused, in Colorado. So much damage has happened in that area and to see past that destruction can be difficult at best.

As I was staring down from plane, it reminded me of when I was growing up.

I lived near a large forest preserve, and every few years, it seemed, the state government would have a controlled burn over the area. After the burn, I would go through the preserve along the trails and see how black and burnt everything was,

but inevitably after a few months, the forest would grow and it always seemed greener.

Going through those trails, it reminded me of the many times where my life was hit by some sort of tragedy. In high school it might have been pimples, in college perhaps exams, after graduation it was paying back student loans, and most recent the death of my niece. Every person goes through hard times and whether others consider it trivial or not, it is still hard to go through.

During these times, what helps me, is my faith and the knowledge that even Jesus went through tragedies and hard times.

While I find comfort, my life begins to grow green once again.

In April of 2013 at the BIA BC Annual Conference in Kamloops, the Tsawwassen BIA was thrilled to be awarded the Best in the West Merit Award 2013 in the Special Events category for their production of the Queen’s Jubilee Outdoor Movie Night.

The event was a tremendous success with Tsawwassen folks flooding the park for a free outdoor screening of the Lion King and a chance to meet and mingle with the Queen (Mavis Lloyd) at her Diamond Jubilee. At 5:45 p.m. the headcount was 1,500 and by dusk it was well over

Thirty-seven entries were received from business improvement associations and business revitalization zones from across British Columbia and Alberta in a number of categories, with only four entries being awarded in this Special Events category.

The event required a great deal of hard work, and the BIA thanked Ana Arciniega, former executive director, for dedicating her time and energy to the success of the project.

Artists take show outdoors

Search for a different venue takes exhibit to the street

W

hen cousins Tessa Nickel and Chris Siemens brought together a group of artists through each other’s art communities, they decided three years ago they wanted to show and sell their creations, and they knew a traditional art show wasn’t for them.

This kind of art isn’t necessarily made just to be bought and quietly admired, but is more often a reflection of the artists’ active lives — so they took a different approach, one that’s a bit unorthodox, but also friendlier and informal.

That was in 2011, and this weekend, the third annual We Have So Much to Give art show once again takes over an entire culde-sac on 44th Avenue, not far from Delta Hospital.

Artfully-inspired skimboards, jewelry from thrifted and recycled materials, paintings, photographs, and more will be among the exhibits for show and sale.

“Some might think it strange for an art show to take over a whole neighbourhood, but right from the start, we’ve had great support and encouragement from all the neighbours,” says Nickel.

“There’s a relaxed vibe and a diversity to our show that makes it successful to many different people from all walks of life. The success of our first two shows has come from attracting the kind of people who want to see things like the skateboard and graphic illustrations by Jon Janzen, and skimboards by Nick Niebuhr and Chris Siemens of Hanzane Skimboards. They all have open minds, and are interested in new ideas. It’s not stuffy and inaccessible like a gallery and instead welcomes any person, artistic or not, to be a part of this unique thing that we have created together.

The concept seems to be working — can’t believe we’re already on our third show.”

Earthwise offers Green Adventures

Earthwise Society is offering kids summer camps in the garden.

Squiggly worms that help make soil, tiny seeds that turn into carrots, colourful butterflies, and busy bees: these are just some of the things for kids to discover at the Green Adventures summer camps at Earthwise Farm and Garden this year.

Green Adventures is for kids aged five to eight, and will be held on four consecutive Thursdays, from July 18 to Aug. 8.

More than just summer entertainment, the camp is designed to engage children with nature through fun, hands-on learning and outdoor adventures at the beautiful Earthwise Garden and Farm in Boundary Bay. The camp invites young children

to explore nature and discover the magic of gardening and growing food.

From scavenger hunts to planting seeds to harvesting fresh produce, kids will discover their connection with the natural world and have fun while doing it.

The Green Adventures summer camp comes on the heels of a busy season of learning at Earthwise; over 1,200 school children and their parents visited the Boundary Bay Farm and Garden for Ecotours, curriculum linked interactive workshops that focus on making wise choices about the environment. Green Adventures continues this theme into the summer, where the emphasis is on

exploration and fun.

“Earthwise is known for its beautiful gardens and fresh produce, but education is at the heart of our mandate. We enjoy making learning about nature fun for kids and hope to share our excitement about growing food with them, too,” says Patricia Fleming, executive director of Earthwise Society.

The Green Adventures summer camp will run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays, starting July 18.

The cost is $30 a day or $100 for all four.

Pre-registration is required.

In 2012 the government released its finding from a self-reported statistics questionnaire and within that questionnaire they found that 18 per cent of us reported that we would classify ourselves as obese and 41 per cent of men and 26.9 per cent of women reported that they were overweight.

• Trick your brain. Use smaller plates and taller glasses.

Food looks like more on smaller plates, creating an illusion to our grey matter that we are eating more, and taller, rather than wider, glasses makes the volume look more substantial.

• Eat protein for breakfast. Experts suggest eating at least 30 grams of protein (that’s two eggs and some cottage cheese) to help come out of the fast that you have done through the night and to replenish your protein stores — so that your body does not start drawing on your own muscle tissue.

Eggs, and other wholesome high protein foods, will also help regulate your appetite for the day, filling you up for a longer period of time.

• Serve yourself 20 per cent less. It’s been proven that our margin for mindless eating starts after 80 per cent. That means that after we have eaten 80 per cent of our plate, the remaining 20 per cent is mostly mindless. The body does not need it for survival; we are simply eating it because we have stopped being aware.

• Drink water. Our body cannot distinguish whether it is thirsty or hungry.

Land down under’s Galapagos

Kangaroo Island a prime destination for wildlife encounters BY

Why the indigenous people called this island Karta, or Land of the Dead, remains a mystery because Kangaroo Island, located south west of Adelaide, is one of Australia’s hottest destinations for scenic and wildlife encounters.

Measuring only 155 kilometres by 55 kilometres, more than one third of the island is dedicated to conservation. You’ll see kangaroos and Tammer wallabies, koala bears and possums, fur seals lolling about on amazing beaches, and prickly, long-snouted echidnas scurrying beneath gigantic rock formations ... not to mention more congregations of magpies than there were blackbirds in Tom Thumb’s pie.

My favorites, however, are the fairy penguins whose cliff side ‘condos’ are built into rocky nooks and crannies. Every night, when parents return from

a full day of foraging in the sea, the colony pulsates with excited youngsters squawking their relief to found again, let alone fed.

It’s with a pinch of Aussie sass, though, that Kangaroo Island is billed as Australia’s Galapagos because nestled beside the “bushland authentica” lie picturesque townships, farms, vineyards and homesteads that serve the island’s 4,500 permanent residents as well as some 190,000 visitors a year.

Traveling here takes a little planning since the island has no public transit or official taxi system, and few car agencies allow their vehicles to leave the mainland. Your best bet is to book a tour with Sealink Travel — the same folks who run the ferry service, or fly here and hook up with an on-island guide.

See-it-yourself cyclists, campers and hikers are welcome, but a local guide really makes the difference between a good experience

regard them as a nuisance to crops, here kangaroos are welcome to thrive.

Their survival as a species, however, is more attributable to a kangaroo’s unique ability to control their procreation through times of severe climatic conditions such as drought.

When resources are plentiful, a female usually mothers three offspring at any given time: one in the

pouch, a joey by her side and a developing embryo, which may, as the environment dictates, be either ‘held’ for up to 12 months or aborted all together.

Even the males have been biologically wired for survival because until there has been enough rain to produce a large quantity of green vegetation, they will not even produce sperm.

Charismatic Koalas For many wildlife spotters, the elusive koalas are king. Once hunted to near extinction, and still a vulnerable population on the mainland, Kangaroo Island is a protected koala Eden.

Indeed, the progeny that has descended from the 18 bears that were introduced to the island in the 1920s have swelled so dramatically that today the bears are literally eating their way out of home and haven. With every adult koala eating up to 1.5 kilograms of leaves a day (multiplied by 27,000 koalas), that’s a resource of 30 tons of leaves a day

that must be replenished.

Ten years ago, when plans to cull became overly controversial they were quickly abandoned. Instead, approximately 10,000 animals were sterilized and 3,800 relocated to the mainland.

Sealsscapes Seal Bay is the only place in Australia where you can walk on the beach that is usually strewn with hundreds of endangered Australian sea lions. Most are exhausted after three to five days at sea; others are raising young pups; and still more are posturing the maleness over their harems of disinterested mates.

There’s something magical about sharing the sand with these resting creatures that are unafraid to pose for your camera.

For these sights alone, Kangaroo Island really is one for the bucket list.

Why the Trial Category of Membership Rob? How will you use the Club?

I plan on taking advantage of the lesson programs and all the practice facilities. I love being able to stop in at night and pick up a game for nine holes and enjoy a drink afterwards. Last week I connected with some of the younger players and really enjoyed watching them hit it long and straight. I learned a few moves and really felt like I Kt in with them. Even though I am predominantly a weekend player I love just stopping by for a few putts or the range or just watching people play. My wife Eileen and I plan to entertain once in a while at the Club and have meals whenever we don’t feel like cooking.

Podium finishes for Vipers and Blues

Rep girls soccer teams end outstanding seasons in fine style at Provincial Cup Championships Long and successful soccer seasons came to an end last weekend with local teams and players reaching the podium at the Provincial Cup Championships.

In North Vancouver, the U16 Ladner Vipers and U15 Tsawwassen Blues both came away with medals at the Provincial “B” Cup tournament and it was nearly gold for both of them.

The Vipers were within seconds off adding a B.C. title to their Coastal Cup championship when the Williams Lake Storm scored the equalizer deep in injury time and went on to pull off a 2-1 win in penalty kicks.

Ladner’s run to the final included a huge 1-0 win over heavily favoured Kelowna in round-robin play. The girls also defeated the North Shore Vipers 3-1 and battled Pinnacles FC of Penticton to a 1-1 draw.

“We are incredibly proud of what the girls have achieved this season — shared league title, Coastal Cup champs and now silver at the provincials,” said Vipers coach Dirk Schwuchow.

The U15 Blues didn’t reach the championship game but they were near flawless en route to earning bronze.

Tsawwassen had to win a wild card game to draw into the championships but quickly showed it would be a force to be reckon with. The locals dumped the Quesnel Strikers 4-1 in their opening match then battled Coastal Cup champions West

Vancouver Spuraways to a scoreless draw.

The Blues closed out round-robin play with a 1-0 victory over the Nelson Selects, but the Spuraways were given the nod for the final by edging Tsawwassen 5-4 on goal differential. The locals went on to defeat Vernon United 1-0 in penalty kicks for bronze, while West Van blanked Powell River 1-0.

Coaches Lisa Bremner, Angie Wells and Hank Enns are extremely proud of the girls’ performance, and the work ethic of each and every player.

The girls have been dedicated throughout the year, playing strong and consistently at every opportunity.

The team is full of amazing athletes. The solid defensive line of Monique LaRiviere, Mia Simpson, Sinead Swan, Jamie Wells, Andrae Coschizza shut down the attacks, and were backed by a stellar performance in goal by Damara Begin. There were tireless efforts by midfield players Lauren Joyce, Danica McCormack, Caitlin Worth, Taya Bremner, Brynn Johnstone and Emma Shaefer. The attack was driven by constant pressure of forwards Julia Sasaki, Ava Simpson and Ella Taylor. On the sidelines the job of videographer by Hermann Glokll kept the girls on their toes and looking good.

Red Sox capture Surrey tourney Collings now in Midget all-star team outscores opponents 62-13 in producing six straight wins

The all-star baseball season got off to an impressive start for the Ladner Midget AA Red Sox who captured the Surrey Invitational over the Canada Day Weekend.

The Red Sox dominated at the plate generating 62 runs over the six games, including eight homers.

Outstanding pitching and defense, that only surrendered only 13 runs, matched the performance of the offense.

With such a solid contribution from each player,

this was a true team victory.

Over the next two weeks the Red Sox will compete

with 15 teams for one of six berths into the provincial championships, slated for

One of the most decorated girls softball coaches in Delta will be overseeing the UBC Thunderbirds women’s program next season.

Gord Collings was welcomed by the Point Grey campus last week. The Tsawwassen resident replaces Phil Thom who stepped down after four years at the helm.

“I’m very excited and honoured to be given this opportunity to coach at UBC,” said Collings. “This program has done very well since its inception in 2010 and now I hope to help it take the next step towards developing it into a premier program that can draw more kids to stay and play in British Columbia as opposed to going to the United States.”

A former teacher and administrator in Delta school system for 33 years, Collings most recently was the head coach at Douglas College for five seasons, leading the Royals to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Championship Final in 2013 . He takes over a UBC program that is entering its fifth year of existence and is coming off its best season ever, finishing the year 25-21.

Gord Collings “The opportunity to work with a fouryear program, to watch these young women develop over their careers, and to also help them achieve their goals academically is what attracted me the most to the job,” said the former high school principal and UBC alumni.”

He has extensive experience coaching a variety of sports at the high school and club level. Collings has been involved with softball since 1992, originally working in Tsawwassen and Delta before moving on to Douglas College. He is currently the head coach of Team B.C. which will take part at the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que. In 2011, he led Team B.C. to a gold medal at the Western Canada Summer Games. He has coached current UBC players Yasmin Bains, Alana Westerhof, and Cassandra Dypchey on Team B.C. over the last number of years.

His tenure locally included guiding the ’90 Delta Heat to the Canadian Pee Wee Championship in 2004. That team included his daughter Paige who recently wrapped up an outstanding collegiate career at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Delta ’97 Heat girls fastpitch team more than held its own at a high-profile tournament in Oregon.

The Hillsboro event featured nearly 60 teams in the U16A Division with entries from California, Washington, Nevada, Hawaii, Idaho, Alaska and Oregon. The Heat represented Canada in impressive fashion, placing fifth overall.

After a slow start in a 5-2 opening loss to the Bellevue Blast, the girls rolled off four consecutive wins over Alaska (6-0), Hawaii (7-2), Idaho (6-4) and Washington (4-1) to reach the quarter-finals.

Facing their local arch rivals, White Rock Renegades, the Heat fell behind 5-1.

In their final at bats with two outs, Sierra Sherritt launched a solo home run to centre field to spark some life on the bench and in the crowd. Two batters later, Montana Monk electrified the crowd hitting an

over the fence home run, scoring Laura Baldry and cutting the deficit to one run.

Unfortunately, a third home run was not in the cards and the Heat fell 5-4.

The team was led by strong pitching performances from Taylor Woodward, Kendra Ho and Monk. Behind the plate, Jordan Britten-Yung, Maria Palmegiani and Danielle Martyniuk all demonstrated their strong arms, allowing only a couple stolen bases all weekend. Infielders Lauren Watson (2B) and Shelby Cumiskey (3B) ate up any ground balls hit to them. In the outfield, Baldry and Sherritt both threw out players at home plate and Kirstynn DeCicco made a great over the shoulder catch. Offensively, Martyniuk and Monk led the team with their bats and lefties Woodward, Watson and Tia Lore gave the opposition fits with their blistering speed on the base paths.

Audi delivers on sports hatchback 2013 S7 brings performance and power without sacrificing comfort or convenience BY

The 2013 Audi S7 — the “sports” version of the already impressive A7 — is a car that brings an amazing level of performance, power, and prestige without sacrificing the balance of comfort and convenience. While the cosmetic changes that separate the A7 from the S7 are subtle, the extra oomph that the S7 brings to the table in the form of horsepower is significant and impressive indeed.

Design The 2013 Audi S7 delivers superb performance but it can also help you run your “normal chores” — thanks to a functionality that can also impress. Some may not be fans of what could be described loosely as a luxury hatchback (at least in terms of the basic architecture sense), but this is by far the best looking example available. And, while looks go a long way in this segment, a dash of practicality can also sweeten the package. In the looks department, S models are dressed with a unique version of Audi’s single-frame grill, plus aero treatments on the front fascia and down the sides.

mirrors, gray rear diffuser, quad polished exhaust tips and V8T fender badges are also featured on this model.

Having said that, you really have to spend some time behind the wheel to get a true sense of what makes the S7 an S7.

Essentially, that means better steering feel and flatter handling, to name just some of

the “upgrades.” And of course, there’s the out-of-this-world power upgrade thanks to the turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 with cylinder deactivation. This is the same engine found in the Bentley Continental GT but output here is 420-hp and 405 ft-lbs of torque — slightly detuned from the Bentley version.

All S7s feature the most advanced quat-

tro all-wheel-drive system available. It has an active rear differential which not only splits torque to whichever rear wheel is demanding the most traction, but it also shifts power to the outside wheel when cornering to help you get through with less steering input. A lowered air suspension with variable damping and bigger brakes complete the package.

Performance When set to Dynamic, Audi’s Drive Select system firms up the suspension settings and adds more responsive, weighted steering. It also quickens the throttle response, and with the pedal is pushed to the floor, the S7’s rear biased all-wheel drive system instantly hooks up and propels you forward. It takes only 4.7 seconds to reach 100 km/h, which is almost a full second better than the A7 with the top engine.

Things are stable the whole way up to its 250 km top speed with firm shifts from the seven-speed dual clutch transmission, accompanied by a ferociously pleasant exhaust note.

As fun as all that is, the S7 is just as entertaining to drive at normal, going-towork pace.

AUDI from page 30 The only complaint? When in full auto mode, the transmission shifting can be a touch irregular under certain circumstances, but nothing out of the normal. The cylinder-on-demand system is virtually undetectable thanks to active engine mounts that quell vibrations. The S7 even has noise cancellation inside the cabin that eliminates any audible clues. The big advantage of this system is it helps improves fuel economy ratings to 12.7L/100km city and 8.3L/100km highway.

Environment What really stands out about the 2013 Audi S7 is the sheer quality of the interior. It’s just extremely well made and the stunning interior design gives it a unique “flavour.”

It’s the same gorgeous interior as found in the A7, although updates like Valcona leather seats with cross stitching makes the S7 distinct. The S-sport steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles, unique gray instrument cluster, aluminium pedals, and illuminated S7 labelled door sill plates also make the interior feel special feel.

But as mentioned, the S7 isn’t only about image, it’s also practical. Being a liftback means easy access to the trunk, and while it might not be very deep, it goes back a long way. Of course, you can always fold down the rear seats if you need to carry larger items. Sitting in the rear, the S7 feels quite spacious. There’s plenty of knee room, and despite its sloping roof line, headroom is fine for all but the tallest people.

The S7 is also a highly functional car as well with Audi’s intuitive MMI interface standard along with features like Bluetooth and a DVD player. But you do have to pay a price for such features and the S7 costs $20,000 more than the base A7.

Features The Audi S7 is only available in one model and has a starting price of $89,300.

The impressive standard equipment list includes a glass sunroof, adaptive headlights, rearview camera, heated seats in the front and rear, BOSE surround sound system, MMI touch navigation system, iPod integration, and Bluetooth Additional optional features are included in packages such as the Driver Assistance package which provides adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and Audi pre

sense plus; the Vision package boasting a heads-up display and night vision; and a Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System featuring 19 speakers for genuine 5.1 surround sound.

The fuel efficiency ratings for the S7 are 12.7L/100km city and 8.3L/100km highway.

Thumbs Up The 2013 Audi S7 is one of the most stunning four-door coupes on the road. Its interior is exceptionally comfortable and quiet, and the design is gorgeous. The power delivery is impressive.

Thumbs Down The most polarizing aspect of the S7 is its foundation.

Not everybody loves the idea of a high performance fivedoor design. Also, the base A7 is already a very good car and not every customer will feel the need to pay extra for the S7.

The Bottom Line If you’re looking for long-distance comfort with superb performance edge, wrapped in an extremely stylish and functional package, the 2013 Audi S7 is clearly a great pick.

Competitors BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe The 6-series Gran Coupe has power output that make most sports cars blush, fashionable good looks and the nicest interior available. The hydraulic steering makes it a pleasure to drive at speed but it struggles to adequately handle bumps partly due to the run-flat tires.

At $99,800, the Gran Coupe is considerably more than its competitors, which also have more standard equipment.

Mercedes-Benz CLS550 4MATIC The CLS-Class was the original four-door coupe and therefore it is the benchmark. On its own, the CLS550 has excellent road presence and, like all Mercedes’, is a great high-speed cruiser.

It may have fallen a step behind the new comers, but its $84,800 starting price keeps it in the market.

Porsche Panamera 4S Few names in the automotive world are as prestigious as Porsche. For $110,200 you can bring home a four-door Porsche with a 4.8-litre V8 and all-wheel drive.

The Porsche Panamera offers customers a more pure driving experience, but as a result it sacrifices some practicality.

The 2013 Audi S7 is a great pick for drivers looking for a superb performance edge wrapped in an extremely stylish and functional package.
