Tour rolls into town on weekend Speedy cyclists to descend on Delta for series of three races

There will be wheel-to-wheel action over three days as the 13th edition of the Tour de Delta hits town this weekend.

Cyclists will descend on the streets of Delta for a series of three races: the MK Delta Criterium on Friday in North Delta, the Brenco Criterium Saturday in Ladner and the White Spot | Delta Road Race on Sunday in Tsawwassen.

Cyclists will be chasing a total prize purse of $25,000.

This year marks a first for the Tour de Delta with international sanctioning, as well as a brand new course entirely in Tsawwassen, for the road race.

That recognition from the sport’s global governing body is expected to give the race its strongest field ever.

The new start/finish location at Dennison Park lends itself to a fun, family environment, said race director Mark Ernsting, adding it can allow youth to see how

professional teams are set up and other details about the race.

The Tour de Delta kicks off B.C. Superweek (July 5 to 14), a collection of events around the Lower Mainland with a prize purse totaling $110,000 this year.

Vacant lot to become bike park Civic politicians give the go-ahead to turning undeveloped corner of Ladner’s Holly Park into a pump track BY

A vacant corner of Holly Park will soon be transformed into a bike park for all ages.

Delta council gave the go-ahead last week to a parks and recreation department recommendation to build a bike pump track at a lot in the 6100-block of Ladner Trunk Road.

A pump track is a continuous loop of berms and rollers that one can ride without pedaling. A rider uses the momentum of their body to keep moving around a course, which typically has areas of varying degree of difficulty.

Parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz told council that in areas where pump tracks are established, it’s not uncommon to see riders from seven to 60 riding the circuit.

“They’re appearing everywhere and they’re appearing in some cases without our sanction. Kids are just going in and starting to move dirt. The idea here is to create a purposeful one in a fairly central location in Ladner,” said

“The goal here is to have a track that is capable of serving all ages and all abilities, with the youth being served first.”

Council was told a study conducted in Philadelphia found bike pump tracks are one of the fastest growing attractions in biking, as they are small in scale and can be enjoyed by cyclists of all ages and skill levels.

Armstrong is part of the Shed Bike Club, a society formed in 2004 that has a formal agreement with Delta to allow the bike riders to build structures for

trick riding on a trail in Watershed Park.

Armstrong told the Optimist he’s tried many pump tracks, which are safe and designed in a way that most anyone on most bikes can ride.

“The more skilled you are, the more you can do on the track. My kids ride them all over the place and I love going to the pump tracks with the kids because I can have just as much fun

on the same track as they do,” he said.

The ongoing arrangement with the Shed Bike Club has been a successful one, states a staff report to council, which notes the success of the arrangement can be attributed to the fact the club’s executive is made up of adults who wish to see responsible, viable and ongoing activity in Watershed Park.

However, the munici-

pality hasn’t been able to duplicate that success in other parts of Delta. The report notes there have been several other attempts to establish memorandums of understanding with interested parties to develop biking facilities, but those haven’t resulted in agreements, although a small facility exists in Boundary Bay. Costing $8,000 for materials and another $7,000 for water service to maintain the track, the pump track in East Ladner will be completed without a legal agreement with any particular group. It’s to be constructed by volunteers under the supervision of the parks and recreation department.

Meanwhile, a similar project is getting started in a hydro right-of-way at Pebble Hill Park in Tsawwassen after resident Eric Wong approached Delta. A graduate of Capilano University Mountain Bike Operations Program, and having built sustainable trails for the International Mountain Bike Association, Wong has extensive experience, including building a pump track in Sechelt.

Book is written to honour life of brave little boy

A local author and artist is dedicating his upcoming work to help fund cancer research in honour of a young friend who lost his battle with the disease earlier this year.

Long-time Tsawwassen resident Michael Duncan is looking for a publisher for Snowrunner, a children’s book he wrote and illustrated. Duncan has dedicated the book to Brian Hamilton, his young neighbour who earlier this year succumbed to leukemia after battling the disease for 14 months.

He was just five years old.

Duncan said he was

touched by the little boy who would often meet him in the hallway and walk him to the elevator, so he wanted to do something to honour his memory.

All proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to help fund research into childhood leukemia.

“This little boy would come home with no hair, full of tubes but so full of intelligence,” he said.

Remembered as a gentle and courageous child who continued to laugh and play throughout his treatment, Brian’s parents initially thought he just had the flu in December 2011 when he was looking pale

and seemed to be lacking his usual energy, said dad Bruce Hamilton. After a few days and no improvement, Hamilton and his wife Amy took Brian to the doctor.

The doctor was concerned, Hamilton said, and told the couple not to be alarmed but to take their young son to B.C. Children’s Hospital for tests. After a battery of tests, they got the diagnosis — acute myeloid leukemia.

Treatment began with chemotherapy, but after two rounds there was little change.

“It pretty much did nothing,” Hamilton said.

The doctors gave the

family two options: continue to battle with more, stronger treatment or palliative care to keep Brian comfortable.

“We went with treatment,” Hamilton said.

“We weren’t ready to give up yet.”

They did their best to make the most of their time left with Brian.

There was a trip to Disneyland through the Children’s Wish Foundation in January but soon after returning it became evident the cancer was progressing quickly. He was admitted to Canuck Place and passed away on Feb. 21 with his parents at his side.

Snowrunner is the story of a young boy stricken with a life-threatening illness who dreams of adventure and fantasy on his horse.

Delta Hospital important to health care sustainability BY

Delta Hospital is an important piece in the puzzle to keep the health care system sustainable.

That was the message delivered by a Fraser Health official to Delta council last week during a presentation on the hospital’s new master concept plan.

Marco Buccini, the health region’s executive director of facilities, planning and real estate, described how the plan would define the evolving role of the hospital within the network of acute and community services.

Buccini explained the network service delivery approach, in which the hospital plays an integral part, is increasingly integrated with a number of community programs.

Two years ago, Fraser Health, in partnership with the Delta Hospital Foundation, launched the planning initiative aimed at determining what services the hospital should provide as well as what building additions may be needed.

What came out of that was a master plan containing short-term goals and longterm objectives.

“We didn’t just do this as an acute service review. We did it really from a community health perspective.

So the network of care isn’t just a geographic network of care, it’s a comprehensive network of care that looks at community services as well as residential care services,” Buccini said.

Included in the goal is a potential community health centre. A business case will be presented to the province in the next couple of months, Buccini noted, adding the estimated cost is in the $11 million to $13 million range. The health region notes the medical imaging and lab expansion would total almost 1,000 square metres combined.

Six to 15 years out, the plan sees an increase in acute care beds, from the 59 now available to 87, as well as potential residential complex care expansion and the replacement of the seniors home. Another possible addition is a mental health unit comprising 25 beds as well as enhancement of the entire hospital site to serve an aging population.

looking ahead 15 to 20 years, include enhancement and expansion of the emergency department, while the number of acute beds would increase to 109.

Buccini said one of the best things the hospital has going for it is there’s plenty of adjacent land for expansion. The upgrades are seen as necessary not only fulfill Delta Hospital’s role within the changing health care network, but also to meet the demands of Delta’s changing population.

The health region notes that by 2021, the number of Delta residents age 65 and over is projected to grow by 30 per cent. Although the population of Delta is estimated to see a slower than average growth, development at the Tsawwassen First Nation is expected to bring in another 4,000 people by 2020.

At a recent presentation to the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, hospital foundation executive director Veronica Carroll said her foundation has committed $7.5 million for the lab and medical imaging expansion, hoping to launch a major fundraiser later this year once the business case is approved. It was also announced the auxiliary has agreed to contribute $2.5 million toward furnishing and equipping the new facility. According to the FHA, the number of inpatient, outpatient and day surgeries at Delta Hospital all increased over the last three years, but the most striking increases could be seen in diagnostic services, which went from 42,155 procedures to 103,605, as well as emergency ward visits, which jumped from 26,581 to 30,214.

A Ladner woman was honoured last week by a well-known charity for her years of work helping to raise money for children in need.

Caren Reynolds was presented with Variety – The Children’s Charity’s 2013 Heart Award at the 44th annual Heart Awards dinner last Thursday.

Over the last 12 years, Reynolds and her team at NPO Management Inc. helped the organization raise more than $21 million through annual charity lotteries.

Reynolds said she was “deeply touched to receive this acknowledgement from Variety – The Children’s Charity” and she has always been “inspired by Variety’s compassion and generosity of spirit.”

I know many people who have Type A personalities.

They don’t sit still. They get up at dawn. They work out for 90 minutes. Then they read three newspapers, write 52 emails, put a gourmet dinner in the slow cooker, head downtown to spend 11 hours at the office, and return home to put in three hours of yard work.

Our neighbours to the south will celebrate Fourth of July with a parade and more tomorrow in Point Roberts.

This year’s parade, which has a theme of Remembering When in Point Roberts, is scheduled to start at noon at the west end of Gulf Road.

The hope with the theme is to celebrate some of the Point’s old heritage businesses like Clark’s Store and Ben’s Store, noted Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce president Heather McPhee.

The procession will take

its usual route, heading east down Gulf Road to Tyee Drive and then south to the APA intersection.

Applications to take part in the parade will be available the day of the event.

Those coming to watch are asked to bring a donation for the Point Roberts food bank. The Wackie Walkers, a local walking group, will pick up donations along the parade route, said McPhee.

There will be festivities afterwards at the marina, including food, a beer garden, a dunk tank and fireworks later on, she said.

MURPHY’S LAW Who would have thought when the Tour de Delta debuted a dozen years ago it would make this type of impression on the cycling world?

OK, so maybe there were a few people at the beginning who had the foresight to see what book-ending a week of cycling with the long-running Tour de White Rock would mean to the sport in these parts, but I don’t imagine there were many. It soon became apparent, however, the Delta races were the linchpin of what’s now known as B.C. Superweek, creating a critical mass for top-notch cycling in the region.

Having events on consecutive weekends in the Lower Mainland set the stage for new midweek races in Burnaby and UBC as well as the resurrection of the storied Gastown Grand Prix. B.C. Superweek has now grown to nine races over 10 days with a total purse exceeding $100,000.

Without Delta arriving on the cycling scene back in 2001, I’m not sure any of the midweek races would have materialized, leaving just the venerable White Rock races to try and attract riders to Greater Vancouver every summer.

The Tour de Delta has stepped it up a notch this year by becoming the first road race in B.C. to be sanctioned by the Union Cycliste International, the sport’s global governing body. The designation means competitors can earn ranking points in Sunday’s White Spot-sponsored road race, which in turn will help attract the strongest field in the event’s history.

The sanctioning could even have ramifications for our Olympic team as the ability for Canadian riders to earn valuable UCI points on home turf could translate into more berths in international competitions.

The series has given aspiring athletes a front row seat to world-class cycling as well as provided up-and-coming riders an opportunity to test their mettle against some of the best in North America. It’s become a fertile training ground, preparing a growing number of racers for the jump to Europe and cycling’s biggest stages. It’s pretty amazing to see a guy like Tyler Farrar win on the streets of Delta and just a few years later capture a stage of the Tour de France.

And none of it would have been possible if it hadn’t been for a leap of faith

by Guy Gentner and others, including his then-colleagues at municipal hall, who bought into the idea that top-notch cycling could work in Delta.

A dozen years later it’s clear their belief was well founded as the best field ever is poised to battle it out on our streets this weekend.

COMMUNITY COMMENT I had no idea what to write for my column this week.

So I sought advice from someone who always has lots to say: Lee LeMoignan, owner of Pets-N-Us in Ladner. Lee has an opinion on almost everything: the high cost of beer, government control, people who don’t pick up after their dogs, the list goes on. Some merchants like to give free samples; Lee likes to give free advice.

Naturally, I was curious what he thought about Walmart coming to one of the mega malls planned by the Tsawwassen First Nation. The mammoth U.S. retailer is owned by the richest family in the world — a family with more wealth than the bottom 40 per cent of Americans combined.

A quintessential big-box store, Walmart is known for destroying local businesses and pillaging the economies of small-town America, not to mention the company’s questionable labour practices that are the subject of Robert Greenwald’s

2005 documentary Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price.

There is almost nothing Walmart doesn’t sell, and that alone must have local businesses trembling like a grocery buggy with a broken wheel during a flour sack sale. I assumed Lee would be the same; his excellent customer service and industry knowledge no match for this multinational corporation.

But he’s OK with it — something about living in a capitalist society and how people should be able to shop where they want to shop and governments shouldn’t interfere just because they don’t like what’s on the menu or how it was prepared.

Of course I disagreed with him and a debate ensued about the culture of consumerism. Then it occurred to me: this was exactly the reason I don’t want Walmart moving in. The level of conversation I was having with Lee would never take place inside a Walmart.

First of all, the door greeter would be preoccupied eyeballing my lumpy jacket for stolen merchandise, and the cashier would be too busy and under too much pressure to engage in anything beyond the requisite formalities: “Hi, how are you today?”

“Crappy. Your store just put mine out of business. I’m here buying crackers for the staff farewell luncheon.”

I’m also certain any Walmart isn’t going to dedicate a little corner of its pet supply department to a homeless cat from the Delta Community Animal Shelter to help it find a new family; and I’ll be gobsmacked if I see Walmart handing over a cheque for $1,400 to the shelter, which is what Lee did in January after holding a Pet Photos with Santa fundraiser.

Lee isn’t alone in his efforts.

Local businesses support the community in innumerable ways individually and through the collective endeavours of the Ladner and Tsawwassen business associations.

These groups are behind countless monetary donations to worthwhile causes and put on or sponsor some of the biggest events in our communities.

It all comes down to a certain sense of citizenship that I believe small business owners have that mega corporations run by people who aren’t our neighbours and who don’t live in our community — or sometimes even our country — don’t.

I hope Walmart doesn’t come to town. And if it does, I hope I’m wrong about the trail of devastation it will leave. And if I’m wrong, Lee LeMoignan will be the first to remind me every time I drop by his store for dog food.

Community continues to change Editor: Re: Concern yourself with Ladner issues, letter to the editor, June 26 How dare Peter White tell Joyce Schmidt to concern herself with issues in her own community. As a resident of Ladner and formerly North Delta, I applaud Schmidt for speaking out about issues in the community of Delta.

This Southlands controversy has gone on far too long.

When one moves into a community, hopefully that community continues to grow and thrive, not stagnate, staying the same forever.

With growth comes a temporary increase in traffic, dump trucks, parking, etc. At present, Ladner

is undergoing extensive upgrading to Ladner Trunk Road. Traffic patterns are disrupted and the roadway is in disrepair, but we take it in stride: It’s a temporary situation.

Be concerned with issues in the community, but don’t concern yourself with Ladner, it’s only part of the Delta community.

Delta schools returning arable land to food production Editor: As a former delivery boy for the Optimist (my son needed a helping hand when it rained), I have followed your coverage of the Southlands debate.

With wise counsel, the Delta school board has agreed to use its properties

for farmland. We can now consider this a fair swap of arable land returned to production.

Returning arable land should satisfy the argument for developing the Southlands. If indeed the lack of school grounds for exercise and sports becomes

problematic, then some of the vegetable garden space in the new Southlands could be converted into school grounds.

This is a win-win and shows a community providing for itself for generations to come.

Public should be driving dialogue

Editor: Re: Imaginative proposal for Southlands will meet needs of the community, letter to the editor, June 19 I don’t want this letter to be perceived as negative.

The last thing we need in the discussion around the Southlands is more polarized rhetoric.

Having said that, in response to the letter, yes, the plan for the Southlands has some good qualities.

To call it, and I quote, “a superb, imaginative, magnificent, well designed, sustainable — and, yes, extraordinarily generous — proposal offered to our community,” needs to be seen for what it is.

This is little more than a sales pitch.

When one accesses the “ImagineSouthlands” website, one can see where the language of this letter comes from. This website is financially supported and a part of Century Group, the developers of the property.

Century ran an ad in the same issue of the Optimist that says, “Please keep Earthwise in your plan for the Southlands.” This ad suggests this proposal is all about nurturing farmland,

a notion that would further inflame Southlands opponents who see this proposal as anything but concern for farmland.

Currently the Corporation of Delta has seven binders of public feedback on the Southlands.

Most of this feedback is not in agreement with the comments above. Certainly the general perception of the Southlands proposal is negative and there are many reasons for that.

Mayor Lois Jackson has shown little interest in real public input and forged forward with the developer. This has inflamed the people who care about this land, farmland in general and, specifically, the community. If there had been real public input, the direction for this land would certainly have taken a different course.

Arguably our elected council is not interested in a real dialogue. That leaves us with superlatives like

“superb, magnificent, sustainable and extraordinarily generous,” all of which are less than accurate.

Sadly the letter also refers to the fear factor.

Had this been left out I may have accepted this as a reasonably positioned opinion.

If Patrick Johnson and Paul Tillotson actually believe this is the “opportunity of a generation,” then let us seize that opportunity. Let’s start a real dialogue and see what we do with our farmland and our community.

Dialogue should be driven by citizens, not developers. Only when a council opens up to this dialogue and its electorate will something “superb” come of it. If Century Group truly wants to be a part of this, it needs to step back from council’s lead. When it realizes the success of this proposal does not come from council’s agreement, it will become the “opportunity of our generation.”

Editor: On the morning of June 25, aircraft arriving at YVR were once again routed directly over Tsawwassen at approximately 12:30 a.m.

It would seem the YVR noise abatement procedures, which are clearly intended to minimize the impact of aircraft noise over residential areas during the night hours, do not apply to our community.

As a result, we continue

to be exposed to frequent and ongoing noise pollution from YVR flights from 6 a.m. throughout the entire day and until approximately 1 a.m. the next morning. In short, we are living under the very frequent roar of jet engines with the exception of a few hours during the middle of the night.

That said, there is the odd 2 or 4 a.m. flight over our homes for good measure.

With the exception of communities directly adjacent to the actual airport, no area in the Lower Mainland is being subjected to this remarkable level of noise pollution.

Other than a complete disregard for this oncequiet community, could you advise why aircraft are being routed over our homes in the middle of the night when there is absolutely no aircraft congestion that would prevent directing these flights over the water on their approach to or departure from YVR. I should add that in many respects YVR is properly considered to be a worldclass airport, however, in terms of subjecting South Delta residents to noise pollution, it is nothing less than a noisy neighbour.

Road race goes international 13th edition of Tour de Delta includes UCI recognition for SundayEs finale

Cyclists will be pedaling like mad this weekend at the 13th annual Tour de Delta.

“Everything is coming together really well,” said Mark Ernsting, race director for Tour de Delta as well as B.C. Superweek.

The weekend is made up of three main races — the MK Delta Criterium on Friday in North Delta, the Brenco Criterium Saturday in Ladner and the White Spot | Delta Road Race on Sunday in Tsawwassen.

Cyclists will be chasing a total prize purse of $25,000.

Ernsting said the women’s field is expected to double to around 40 to 45 while the event will draw its benchmark of around 100 to 110 men.

A big change for Tour de Delta this year is the addition of international sanctioning, as well as a brand new course, for the road race.

Ernsting said it’s exciting to have the men’s race get UCI 1.2 sanctioning along with the future outlook of having the women’s event get part of that certification

Riders will race through the streets of Ladner Village on Saturday evening in the Brenco Criterium. as well.

The new course is set entirely in Tsawwassen.

“It’s going to be techni-

cal, which is going to be a lot of fun for the athletes as well as very challenging.”

Besides the main three races there are also community events planned for the weekend, including a Kids Crit (in North Delta on Friday and in Ladner on Saturday) as well as a Tsawwassen Community Festival set for Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the South Delta Secondary grounds.

The Tour de Delta kicks off B.C. Superweek (July 5 to 14), a collection of events around the Lower Mainland with a prize purse totaling $110,000 this year.

“As a series, we’ve really grown over the last three to four years and become recognized by the North American circuit as one of the best series available to the athletes,” said Ernsting.

The Brenco Criterium in Ladner Village is the middle event of the Tour de Delta weekend. streets of Ladner Village.

It takes roughly one minute for racers to make their way around the course, so there’s almost constant action for spectators. Riders can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h during the criterium, making the colourful peleton a blur as it goes by.

A prime, a race within the race for a cash prize, adds to the excitement.

There are many great viewing opportunities, including makeshift patios of the restaurants that line the course.

• The weekend concludes on Sunday with the marathon-like White Spot Delta Road Race, which has

received international sanctioning for the first time this year.

What used to be the third stage in the Tour de Delta will now be run as a oneday International Cycling Union (UCI) event.

That’s not the only change this year as the road race route is now entirely in Tsawwassen, a departure from previous editions that saw the course cover all three Delta communities.

The men cycle an exhausting 151 kilometres, doing 13 laps of a course that starts and finishes at Dennison Park. The women will do seven laps for a total of 81 kilometres.

The Tour de Delta’s three races continue to evolve, with a significant change taking place this year with the White Spot Delta Road Race.

Here’s a look at the three races on the calendar this weekend: • The weekend begins on Friday evening with the MK Delta Criterium in North Delta. Replacing the raceagainst-the-clock prologue and the hill climb prior to that, the North Delta crit has been modeled after the popular Brenco Criterium, which is contested each year in Ladner Village.

This year marks the third running of the MK Delta Criterium that will see riders travel in a pack over the 1.2-kilometre circuit, reaching speeds up to 70 km/h on a downhill section.

The women will complete 30 laps, while the men will do 40 laps of the circuit that starts and finishes on 84th Avenue.

Purse swells for Superweek Delta weekend kicks off nine-race series B.C. Superweek promises to be bigger and better than ever this year with more top teams and riders competing for more money as well as international ranking points.

Canadian Olympians are among the many that will line up against other top professional teams and riders from all over the world, including entries from Germany and New Zealand, at Canada’s biggest cycling series, with nine races over 10 days and $110,000 in prizes.

For the first time ever, B.C. Superweek racers will also compete for valuable Union Cycliste International (UCI) points from the international governing body of cycling, which has sanctioned the 2013 White Spot Delta Road Race.

“This will be the only road cycling race in B.C. to have international sanctioning,” said B.C.

Superweek and Tour de Delta race director Mark Ernsting, who expects more top North American Continental and Pro Continental teams to attend B.C. Superweek.

International sanctioning for the Delta race is expected to provide carry over benefit to the rest of B.C. Superweek, which is already coming off the high of having more than 20,000 spectators pack the streets for last summer’s return of the prestigious Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix.

Not to be outdone, Gastown has boosted the prize total for the mid-week race to $45,000, bringing the B.C. Superweek total to $110,000 — the largest cycling series purse in Canada.

Superweek kicks off this weekend with the three-race Tour de Delta (July 5 to 7), followed by the UBC Grand Prix (July 9), Gastown

Grand Prix (July 10), Giro di Burnaby (July 11) and the Tour de White Rock (July 12 to 14).

“This promises to be the best B.C. Superweek yet,” Ernsting said.

B.C. Superweek offers riders nine races over 10 days in five different areas of the Lower Mainland. This year’s total purse has been bumped to $110,000.

Canada just missed out on getting two extra spots in the 2012 Olympic road race in London, leaving Ryder Hesjedal by himself in a race that was dictated largely by team tactics.

With many top Canadians at B.C. Superweek annually, the extra UCI points could make a difference in 2016.

It may also inspire future Olympians, something B.C. Superweek has done before.

For proof, look to Jasmine Glaesser, who in just a few years went from a local women’s learn-torace program, to competing at (and later dominating) B.C. Superweek, to winning a bronze medal on the track at the 2012 Olympic Games.

“The benefits include a stronger field with national

teams pursuing UCI points, opportunities to carry out sport development initiatives, and a race experience for Canadian and B.C. riders that contributes to their growth in the sport,” said John Tolkamp, president of Cycling Canada, said of the sanctioning.

“The addition of a UCIsanctioned road race in B.C. supports growth in Western Canada, increases the visibility to a young audience, and helps the development of high level athletes and teams by exposing them to the highest level.”

The payoff has included countless local riders using strong showings at B.C. Superweek to launch their professional cycling careers, earning contracts with top North American teams by impressing the managers and directors that come every year to compete and find new talent.

It’s a list that includes many of Canada’s best, from Glaesser to Svein Tuft and Christian Meier, who compete together in Europe now and were two of just three Canadians to finish this year’s Giro d’Italia.

Others, including Sebastian Salas and Ben Chaddock, have earned deals with top North American teams after impressing at B.C. Superweek.

Tour alum now on big stage Svein Tuft graduates from B.C. Superweek to race in prestigious Tour de France

From the streets of Delta to the Champs-Élysées, B.C. Superweek veteran Svein Tuft is making his Tour de France debut this year.

The eight-time Canadian time trial champion and multiple B.C. Superweek event winner was named to the nine-man Tour de France team for ORICAGreenEDGE last month.

The 36-year-old Langley native stepped onto cycling’s biggest stage last Saturday to begin the grueling, three-week race.

“Svein is a world class time trialer,” said ORICAGreenEDGE sport director Matt White in a release on the team’s website announcing the squad. “He’ll be crucial for our team time trial ambitions. He’s a strong guy with a huge amount of power to chase breakaways or look after the sprint train. We can use him in a lot of ways. I’m really looking forward to taking him to his first Tour de France.”

Tuft has shown off that time trial ability numerous times at B.C. Superweek,

including criterium victories at the Tour de Delta, UBC Grand Prix and Tour de White Rock last summer.

He has been involved in B.C. Superweek for more than a decade as a competitor and supporter, first learning to race against the best, and later returning

“That was huge for me being in a break with Brian Walton,” Tuft said.

“It’s important for our next generation of guys coming up to race at that level, and for people to come out and see it. It helps bring up the level and if you are looking to develop and go to the next level, you need to race against guys that are at that level and get a taste of what it is.

It’s hard to know what that is if you don’t.”

B.C. Superweek has certainly provided that level of competition, with several locally-based riders catching the eye of team managers to earn professional contracts over the years.

Joining Tuft in the Tour de France this year are fellow Canadians David Veilleux of Quebec, who beat Tuft in a sprint at the 2010 Tour de Delta, as well as Victoria’s Ryder Hesjedal. In addition to

Veilleux, the list of recent B.C. Superweek competitors with Tour de France ties includes Canadian leg-

end Gord Fraser, American veteran Chris Horner, Danny Pate and Tyler Farrar.

Superweek selects four Ambassadors Spotlight to shine on Canadian contingent B.C. Superweek, Canada’s biggest cycling series, announced last week the creation of an Ambassador Program for 2013.

“Our goal for the Ambassador Program is to serve as a win-win scenario for both the athlete and B.C. Superweek as we promote them, their team name and charity or society of choice on our poster and website,” said B.C. Superweek race director Mark Ernsting.

“We’d also like to help grow each athlete’s profile in the community, get them more attention and grow their status as professional riders.”

The inaugural B.C. Superweek Ambassador Program features a quartet of top level Canadian cyclists in Christian Meier, Gillian Carleton, Lex Albrecht and Ryan Anderson.

Christian Meier Meier is one of three Canadians to have completed in May’s Giro d’Italia as a member of

ORICA-GreenEDGE out of Australia. The 28-yearold from Sussex, New Brunswick has had a strong showing this year, finishing first in both the Sprints classification and Special Sprints classification at the 2013 Volta a Catalunya in March, and third overall at the Tour de Beauce last month in Quebec. He finished first in the road race at the Tour de White Rock as part of last year’s B.C. Superweek.

Gillian Carleton Carleton won bronze at last year’s London Olympics in the team pursuit with Tara Whitten and Jasmin Glaesser. The 24-year-old is in her first road season as professional rider and member of the Specialized-lululemon professional women’s team.

She celebrated her first UCI victory in May, taking Stage 5 of the inaugural Tour Languedoc Roussillon in the south of France.

Lex Albrecht Albrecht is one professional athlete who doesn’t mind using her stature for

a good cause. As a member of the NOW and Novartis for MS team, the Barrie, Ontario product and fellow NOW (No Opportunity Wasted) riders are on a mission to further awareness and deepen understanding about multiple sclerosis. Albrecht was the 2012 Champion of Québec, 2011 Canadian Vice-Champion and has represented Canada at the World Championships. Her most recent podium finish was winning the Grand Prix Granby in May. Ryan Anderson Born in Edmonton, this is Anderson’s fifth season on the professional cycling circuit and first with Optum Pro Cycling p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies. A product of the Victoria Academy of Cycling, the 25-year-old wore the climber’s jersey for four stages of the 2010 Tour of California and was a silver medalist at the 2005 and 2009 Canadian National Road Championships. Locally, he won the Brenco Criterium at the 2012 Tour de Delta.

Ladner family has rooting interest Kiwi houseguest makes big impression The Sheldrick family of Ladner has a rooting interest in this year’s Tour de Delta.

The Sheldricks, who have attended the annual cycling weekend since its inception, decided to become a host family three years ago. Unfortunately, that rider became sick and couldn’t make it to B.C. for the races, but last year the family opened its home to a rider from the Pure Black team from New Zealand.

Mark and Deborah Sheldrick say the experience ended up becoming a major development in their lives and provided a fantastic mentor for their sons.

Already with two boys, Cameron, 11, and Robert, 8, the Sheldricks gained a third with Louis Crosby, a 22-year-old who ate his way through their kitchen.

The family suddenly had a massive investment in each and every race during the week and was absolutely devastated when Crosby crashed in the Brenco Criterium in Ladner. The

There are several events over the Tour de Delta weekend that will let the public get involved with the festivities.

Youngsters can get a taste of world class cycling by taking part in a Kids Crit (short for criterium) on Friday or Saturday afternoon.

Once the courses are closed to traffic, but prior to the evening’s races, children will be given an opportunity to take a spin in the non-competitive events.

Children will be divided into two age groups: six- to eight-year-olds and nine- to 11-year-olds.

In North Delta on Friday, the younger riders will start at 5:45 p.m. and cover a half-kilometre course; the older group gets going at 5:50 p.m. and will make one lap of the 1.2-kilometre loop.

In Ladner on Saturday, the younger group of cyclists will make one full loop of the .9-kilometre course at 4 p.m., while the older group will do two full

loops beginning at 4:15 p.m.

Registration, which is free, can be done at www. delta.ca or by calling 604-952-3000.

Helmets are mandatory and bikes must be in safe working condition.

All participants will be presented with a medal.

The weekend will also feature a pair of community festivals in conjunction with the races.

From 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, a North Delta Community Festival will take place on the grounds of Richardson Elementary. The Tour de Delta, which celebrates its 13th edition this weekend, has had an exciting history. Here’s a recap of the first 12 editions: Tour de Delta 2001 Victoria teen sensation Clare Hall-Patch and New Zealander Graeme Miller were the stars of the show at the inaugural Tour de Delta. Hall-Patch, 18, won the road race and hill climb, while the 40-year-old Miller topped the road race and criterium.

Tour de Delta 2002 Eric Wohlberg, who was the bridesmaid of the inaugural Tour de Delta, brought along his Saturn Cycling teammates to make sure it didn’t happen again.

Wohlberg, who was edged

by Miller in the 2001 criterium, led a Saturn sweep of the top five positions in 2002.

Tour de Delta 2003 Team Saturn brought a new look to the third annual Tour de Delta, but produced the same impressive results.

With only one rider back, the U.S. juggernaut enjoyed another banner weekend, winning the men’s and women’s overall titles and

Tour de Delta 2004 Pennsylvanian Sarah Uhl, billed as a 20-yearold superstar in waiting, exhibited some of that promise by capturing two of the three women’s races en route to the overall title. Tyler Farrar beat Tsawwassen’s Cam Evans and Wohlberg by the narrowest of margins in the road race.

Laura Brown’s second place finish gave her the overall title thanks to an earlier win in the prologue and a second place finish in the criterium. On the men’s side, David Veilleux from Quebec edged Tuft in both the criterium and the overall, while Bell was a convincing winner of the road race.

Tour de Delta 2011 North Vancouver native Pinfold, who has ridden in all 11 editions of the

Tour de Delta, finally won the overall title thanks to second place in the Brenco Criterium and third place in the White Spot Road Race. Karlee Gendron won the women’s title on the strength of two criterium victories.

Tour de Delta 2012 The weekend featured six different winners, some of them, like Tuft in North Delta and Anderson in Ladner, expected, but others were of the surprising variety. Bellingham amateur Steve Fisher shocked the field by capturing the White Spot Road Race for his biggest-ever victory, while Morgan Cabot broke from the pack to win the women’s road race.

Tour de Delta 2007 After winning the hill climb and criterium, Zach Bell fell just short of capturing all three races when he finished fourth in the road race. He still managed to claim the omnium over Symmetrics teammate and road race winner Andrew Pinfold. Team Giant’s Leah Guloien of Port Moody held off Leah Goldstein of Symmetrics in the road race and in the omnium standings.

Tour de Delta 2008 The Symmetrics team captured all three men’s races again as Evans won the criterium, Pinfold doubled up in the road race and Beijing-bound Svein Tuft won the inaugural prologue.

The annual Jog for a Jug in Point Roberts last month raised $3,100 for the Hannah’s Heroes Foundation.

The 32nd edition saw runners take on an 11.2kilometre route through the American peninsula in the event that has been organized by the RunInn Delta for the past seven years.

Jog for a Jug also included a one-kilometre fun run for kids.

“The RunInn teamed up with Hannah’s Heroes as our charity of choice because Hannah’s family is very close to the RunInn,” said Kevin Ridley, owner of

the RunInn. Jog for a Jug has been a popular fun run for years because at the end of the tough race every runner gets a jug of beer, or a mug of root beer in the case of the kids.

“It’s an old-school fun run,” said Ridley. “We do all the timing by hand and we have all local volunteers helping out for a great cause.”

The race had over 230 runners of all ages and abilities. Alain Blondeau won the men’s race in a time of 42:47, while Courtney McEwan was the top woman in 46:09.

The collapse of one deal led to an even bigger one that instantly swung the direction of the season for the Delta Islanders.

When the club failed to secure goaltending help, recently appointed general manager Bruce Davidson changed the season’s outlook dramatically by sending scoring leaders Cody Nass and Eli McLaughlin to the New West Salmonbellies for the rights to five players, along with four draft picks.

Nass made his Salmonbellies debut Saturday night with three assists in an 8-7 loss to the Coquitlam Adanacs. He takes a 14-point cushion atop the league scoring race into the final week of the regular season. McLaughlin added two points and sits right behind Nass among the top scorers.

When the dust had settled on the deal that no doubt sent shockwaves around the league, the bottom line is the Salmonbellies have received a huge boost to their offence and the Islanders look even better in 2014.

The “future considerations” part of the trade has Nass and McLaughlin’s playing rights reverting back to Delta next season when the club loses just three players to graduation. The Islanders also addressed their future by stock piling prospects and draft picks.

A look at the standings might still have some fans

scratching their heads.

Delta (11-8) sits in fourth place and is just six points back of second place New West. The two playoff finalists receive automatic berths into the league-hosted Minto Cup so the team’s first-ever berth into the national championships was hardly a pipe dream.

That was the plan up until a week ago when the club was closing in on a potential deal to land Nanaimo Timbermen goalie Pete Dubenski and top scorer Mitch Parker for a second straight year. Dubenski helped the Islanders reach the league finals last summer.

However, the Timbermen backed out of the deal, forcing the Islanders to rethink their outlook. Goaltending has been a challenge all season with number one starter Will Schwan unable to even practice due to concussion issues. Delta has used four different stoppers including intermediates Ryland Hood (Richmond) and Matt Keith (Delta).

Hood has been terrific in his eight appearances but a pre-planned grad trip following the intermediate season means he is unavailable for the playoffs.

“The plan all along from training camp was we would have Will available June 1,” said Islanders head coach Shaun Springett. “When that became apparent it wasn’t going to happen then we had to look at alternatives and getting Dubenski was at the top of our list.

players what had unfolded and why trading Nass and McLaughlin made the most sense, especially the package New West was offering .

The Islanders do get some immediate help from New West in Ryan Vogrig and Jake Carey who both will be in the line-up Thursday in Langley.

The list of prospects include Quinn Mackay, who was a hold out with the Bellies this season, and midget draft picks Connor McKay and Wyatt Kinna.

Delta also sent third-year defender Dan McDermott to Langley in return for the playing rights for intermediate “A” player Chase Fraser.

co-winners of the Kiwanis Delta Memorial Sports Award. The honour comes with a $2,000 bursary which the twins will apply towards their traveling and training costs. This is significant given they are still not old enough to apply for carded athlete status despite being two of the top young talents in the country.

The McNamaras thrive in the indoor and beach versions of the game.

In the sand, they have won national titles at the U13, U15, U16, U18 levels.

They will be competing in the women’s open division for the first time at the Clearly Contacts Canadian Championships at Kits Beach, July 12-14. They also will be representing Canada in Puerto Rico at the NORCECA Central Zone Youth Olympic Games Beach Volleyball Qualification Tournament.

At stake is a spot in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

Indoors, the McNamaras helped the South Delta Sun Devils win their first-ever provincial senior girls volleyball championship last December, earning first team all-star honours in the process. With two years of high school eligibility remaining, the Sun Devils are in excellent position to repeat next fall.

This is the eighth year Kiwanis has presented the Delta Memorial Sports Award as their contribution to support local youth.

KOKA - George

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of George Koka on June 27th 2013, he was born November 16, 1939 – in Sardis, BC. As a young boy his family moved to Ladner where farming was a way of life, which formed his character and lifelong passion for helping others. In 1963 he married Jeto and moved to Green Road aka 57th Street where they raised their three children daughters: Kelly (Rick), Kerry (Paul), and son Craig (Maggie). In the early 70’s Dad became involved with minor baseball by umpiring; which was just the beginning of his dedication in volunteering. Dad found the time to coach girl’s softball and boy’s baseball and soccer as well as be actively involved in the men’s fastball association. His service to the community continued as an executive member of the Ladner Legion Branch No. 61; running the Friday & Saturday meat draws and the Mayday beer gardens.

The money raised supported many causes including The Variety show of Hearts Telethon Dad really enjoyed doing his on screen presentation each year on Global TV. Dad gave a new meaning to volunteering he was not your regular volunteer his generosity knew no bounds. For the past 20 plus years he also took time to be involved in the organizing and coordinating of the Delta Assist Christmas Hampers.

His dedication and commitment was recognized by the Delta Sports Hall of Fame in 2012 as the recipient of the Pioneer Award, and in 2013 he received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee award which recognized his commitment; but the greatest award is the one we received in having him as our Father Dad’s greatest pride came with his grandchildren – Rachel, Natalie, Connor and Adelyn. George’s laughter, his passion for golf, and zest for life will be missed by so many family and friends. A service will be held July 5th 2:00pm at Riverside Funeral Home 7410 Hopscott Road Delta BC, and A Celebration of George’s life will be held July 5th 6:00pm at the Community Centre 4734 51 Street Delta BC. It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Robert at Delta Hospital on Wednesday, June 26th, 2013.

Robert is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Kim and daughter, Emily; mother Dorothy, beloved twelve brothers and sisters: Pat, Tom, Tim, Sharon, Jim, Murray, Reenie, Mike, Jenny, Gerry, Randy, Paul and their spouses. He also left twenty nieces and nephews and five grand nieces and grand nephews.

He loved working on this side of the tunnel. He spent his last fifteen months very happily working at Tsawwassen Barbers, where he fit right in and could talk politics, sports, or current affairs - and give a great haircut!

Robert will be remembered by all who knew him for his extraordinary sense of humor and his gift of entertaining children.

He was a loving and dedicated father to Emily, embracing this role with commitment and vigor.

Many thanks to all the physicians that tended Robert and to the kind and compassionate nurses at Delta Hospital.

Evelyn’s loving husband Art passed away in 1996. Evelyn lived most of her life in Winnipeg, moving with Art to Tsawwassen in 1974 and then more recently to West Vancouver, to be closer to family. She was so loved and will be remembered by many as a special lady who took a genuine interest in the lives of the people she met, often accompanied by her adored dog Keighley. Thank you to the Staff at Amica West Vancouver who were such a delight and made her life so enjoyable and thank you to the Palliative Care Team of the North Shore who helped her through her final days. A very special thank you to Dr. Jennifer Walker. At Evelyn’s request, there will be no service.

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend, (Gordon) Ross Bartell.

Ross leaves to mourn his death, his wife Lynn, sons Darren, Mike (Edina), daughter Donna (Dave), grandchildren Sayde, Macey, Nolan and Carter, brother Richard Bartell (Marilyn), sister-in-law Maureen (Gary), brother-in-law Paul (Sue) as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends and his best bud Axis. Ross had his parents Harry and Fran Bartell and in-laws Tom and Iris Varley to greet him with open arms, as well as many friends.

Ross was born June 26, 1944 and raised in Enderby, BC. He loved and cherished his years spent on the farm, memories were made visiting every summer on the farm with his wife and kids under the Enderby cliffs and at Mara Lake. Ross married his wife Lynn in 1968 and resided in Ladner to raise his family. He went to BCIT in 1965 and became an Airline Mechanic for Canadian Airlines. Ross retired at the young age of 52, and then had many enjoyable years building in his workshop, greenhouse, luncheons with former co-workers, at his cabin and mostly with his greatest joy ‘his grandchildren’.

Ross was chosen for some unseen reason on May 24, 2013 with a terminal illness. The pain and suffering ended June 27th, four hours past his 69th birthday with his family by his side. Ross’s life journey will be missed with tears and happy memories of such a wonderful, caring, special, generous man. A man who would help his family and friends with anything with nothing but pride at the end. We will never forget the face and voice of the man we loved.

“This is not the end, but the beginning of a wonderful journey of memories that has made a mark by a loving man.”

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 11:00 am at Cedar Park Church, 5300 - 44th Avenue, Ladner, BC with a reception to follow.

Thank you to the wonderful Doctors, nurses and staff at Royal Columbian Hospital and at Irene Thomas Hospice for all their support and heartwarming compassion.

HANBURY, William Gordon “Bill” November 15, 1924 – June 19, 2013

Bill Hanbury passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 19, 2013 at the Waterford in Tsawwassen. He was 88 years young. Bill was predeceased by the love of his life, Janice Hanbury, and his sister Joan.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Sheila (Barry), son Grant (Michele), grandchildren, Jason (Fabiola), Lauren (Gary), Scott, Nicolle, Claire, Devan, and John, along with great grandchildren, Alejandra and Anna.

Bill was a fine gentleman with a quick wit, a kind heart and great sense of humor. As a business leader he was a mentor to many in the automotive industry and a true pioneer. he will be missed by his many friends and business associates. But most of all he will be missed by his family. Bill was the best father, grandfather, great grandfather anyone could wish for.

Bill always led by example.

Bill and Janice enjoyed spending time with their golf friends at the Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen and at the Indian Wells Country Club in California. Bill and Janice enjoyed gathering the whole family for their yearly summer vacation in Parksville. They loved nothing better than the sound of their grandchildren at play on the beach.

A private family service was held on June 30, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation.
