Bigger wall stalls traffic noise by Sylver McLaren smclaren@mrtimes.com
Bridge traffic noise has been mitigated since the erection of a new wall that runs along the corridor leading up to the Golden Ears Bridge, according to one Wildwood resident. Mike Stark, whose house backs onto the land beside the bridge in Pitt Meadows, is satisfied with the new wall. “Absolutely,” Stark said about the soundproof wall making a difference in the noise.

A 26-year-old Maple Ridge man is dead and his 21-year-old passenger is in hospital after the man drove his truck off the road into the Skagit River on Sunday evening, just after 6 p.m. Mounties responded to a single-vehicle crash 32 kilmetres east of Hope. A 2002 Ford F150 pickup had been traveling westbound on Highway 3 in the Skagit Bluffs area, according to Lower Mainland RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen. Thiessen added that Sgt. Peter Thiessen police were notified by Lower Mainland RCMP a passing motorist in the Sunshine Valley area that there had been a crash to the east on Highway 3. “The pickup had just crossed the Skagit Bridge 1 when it went partially off the traveled asphalt portion of the roadway onto the gravel shoulder,” Thiessen said. “It would appear the driver attempted to take corrective action and steered the pickup back onto the roadway,” he said. “However, control of the pickup was lost and it traveled through its westbound lane, through the oncoming eastbound lane, entered the gravel shoulder on the opposite side of the roadway, and then went down an embankment.” “While going down the embankment,” Thiessen added, “the pickup struck two large trees, then partially submerged in the Skagit River.” The driver of the pickup died at the scene. His passenger, a woman also from Maple Ridge, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. Names of the driver and passenger will not be released, pending permission from their families, said Thiessen. Primary investigation reveals weather and roadway conditions do not appear to have been factors in this crash, but speed, alcohol, mechanical problems, and driver inattention have not been ruled out thus far. Anyone who witnessed the crash and has not spoken to police is asked to contact lead investigator Const. Richard Clark at 604-702-4039.
