The local fire department will celebrate more than 70 years in Pitt Meadows with the unveiling of a huge mural this weekend.

It will be a 27-foot tall showpiece for the Pitt Meadows Fire & Rescue staff and volunteers featuring a motif of past, present, and future of the firehall, painted by local artist Brad Dinwoodie.

The past will be represented by the crest with the year 1941 in it. The present will be represented by the new Pierce truck – Engine 1-1 – that is less than a year old.

And the future is depicted by a firefighter in full gear walking forward.

“These guys are volunteers. They drop everything, whatever their doing, and come, that’s incredible,” he said, adding that this is why he really wanted to do this project.

Fundraising has exceeded the $8,000 budget for the mural, and anything above View video that will go to charities the with firehall supports.

“The overall response from the business community has been phenomenal,” Dinwoodie explained.

The mood was buoyant at the first caucus meeting of the recently re-elected BC Liberal party, according to MLA-elect Doug Bing.

Bing was elected to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows riding, beating the NDP candidate Elizabeth Rosenau by 620 votes, according to final numbers released by Elections BC this week.

He chalked up some of his success to his door-knocking, which he started already on Jan. 15, first targeting polling areas where he got fewer votes.

Hearing underway An extradition hearing is underway in Vancouver this week, against the mother and uncle of Maple Ridge’s Jassi Sidhu.

The pair were arrested last year and face extradition to India on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Jassi was kidnapped and slain in India in June 2000 in what’s dubbed an honour-killing, after she married a man her family did not approve of. The hearing is set to continue for six more days.

Volunteer humbled by honour A consummate community contributor will be lauded during Pitt Meadows Day for his years of service.

When Sandy Wakeling walked into his Highland Park home about a week ago, it took him a few minutes to realize he’d been hoodwinked.

His wife Alison asked him to come home early from work that day under the guise of meeting with a contractor.

When he arrived, he wasn’t totally surprised to find Ali sitting down in their living room with three members of the Pitt Meadows Foundation.

After all, Wakeling explained, he and his wife have been active in the community since moving here 14 years ago. He simply assumed she was meeting with them for some new community endeavour.

But his call home to meet with contractors was all a ruse. And Pitt Meadows Community Foundation president Michael Hayes, last year’s citizen of the year Dolores Lutner, and foundation director Ineke Boekhorst were actually there to see him.

They were there to inform the 42-year-old father of two and consummate community volunteer that he’d been picked as this year’s Pitt Meadows citizen of the year.

“My jaw sort of dropped… it was a very touching moment,” Wakeling said, recounting his shock and amazement as the trio handed him a certificate identifying him as the successful nominee.

The discussion that followed is still a bit of a blur, Wakeling admitted. Not even aware that he’d been nominated, he was shell shocked to find out he’d been selected to receive the honour.

“It’s extremely humbling and flattering,” he told The TIMES. “The nomination came at an interesting

Five years ago this fall, Wakeling was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. He’s undergone several “major” surgeries and ongoing treatment for the sarcoma, but explained that the drug he was on for a few years – which allowed him to continue to be relatively active – stopped working last fall. Consequently, he’s working with doctors now to find an

alternative regime. But he admits the options are limiting, and that’s leaving him with little time and energy to focus on volunteering.

He’s able to continue working part-time as the communications director for the Langley School District and he’s still helping with the Terry Fox Run. But, his priorities have had to shift almost exclusively to his health and his young family, his wife Ali and their two boys (William, 10, and Sebatien, eight).

Despite having to dial back his community involvement of late, Hayes said the award recognizes cumulative work he’s done in the community over the course of many years.

Wakeling has been involved in past with the Friends In Need Food Bank, Pitt Meadows United Church, the City’s Economic Development committee and Official Community Plan committee, the chamber of commerce, and Pitt Meadows Day, among others.

Betty Levens has been organizing the Terry Fox Run for years and lauded Wakeling for his commitment with the local run since 2000 – the one volunteer project he refuses to give up despite his health.

“Sandy has always been a reliable volunteer and someone who is willing to help out with whatever needs doing,” Levens said. “Sandy has great leadership skills and the ability to work with others in a professional and caring way. Due to his community involvement and continuous efforts, Sandy would be a deserving recipient of the Pitt Meadows citizen of the year.”

Wakeling will officially be recognized at this Saturday’s Pitt Meadows Day festivities, during the opening ceremonies at 1 p.m.

Wakeling said it will be a long, but incredibly special day for him.

“It’s going to be a bit of a roller coaster ride. I’m very grateful to be honoured in this way…” Wakeling said. “I hope that when people see there is a citizen of the year, regardless of whether they know me or not, they realize the importance of giving back to their community…”

In recognition of her volunteer efforts, the Grade 12 student will receive the Lynn Papp Award on Pitt Meadows Day this Saturday.

“I’ve always been raised volunteering,” Thompson said. “Giving back to my community is so important because I get so much back from it.”

“It feels great that I can

make a difference in one person’s life,” she added.

One of the nominations for Thompson came from Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters, in which she writes: “She is a person that has contributed so much to so many at a very young age and there is no doubt that she will continue to support our community for many years to come.”

“A lot of people that get bullied feel alone and have no one to turn to, but if I can make it through the battle, then they can, too,” Destiny explained.

In December 2012 Destiny came up with the idea to have a show with performances by singers and dancers and all money that is raised going to the Bullying Awareness Foundation.

The lineup for the concert includes country-pop artist Ray Gibson, who just released an eightsong EP and DaniElle Severinski, who came in second in the Youthink contest.

Other acts include Freshh Dance Crew – the second-place winner of You Think You Can Dance Canada, Shawn Carbonell, Terry Chen, and Destiny herself singing.

The fundraiser is at Pitt Meadows Secondary on Friday, May 31 at 7 p.m.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and entry is by donation.

Thompson volunteers locally with Scouts, with the shoreline cleanup, with parks and recreation supervising day camps, on Remembrance Day, with the Alouette River Management Society, at the food bank in Pitt Meadows, and makes care packages for people on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Her volunteerism has also reached overseas.

Thompson has made several service trips abroad, two while attending Greybrook Academy, and the most recent as part of her Global Perspectives class at Pinetree Secondary in Coquitlam.

In March, Thompson went to Cambodia for three weeks where she

“I loved it – the people there were so amazing,” Thompson said. “I still miss it.”

Thompson said it’s important to help people who are less fortunate or in difficult circumstances.

Volunteering is “never a waste of time,” Thompson said. “It’s worth it – you get out of it what you put into it.”

Thompson said she was “surprised and definitely honoured” to be chosen for the Lynn Papp award.

After the Pitt Meadows Day event, Thompson will head to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver for her graduation ceremony – she is graduating with honours with distinction and will be heading to university in the fall.

The award is given out every year at Pitt Meadows Day, and it is named after a woman who was a long-time volunteer at the annual event.

The award is given to a Pitt Meadows youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years old, who actively participates in community-based activities.

Mitchell proposal draws big crowd Proposal goes back to the drawing board.

About 50 people showed up to the Pitt Meadows council-incommittee meeting on Tuesday night to hear about an application for the Brogden Brown Townhouse Development, also known as Mitchell Road redevelopment.

The application, made by Harvey Hatch Architect Ltd. was to rezone three properties, totalling just under one hectare, to allow a 50unit townhouse and a 755-square-metre lot to accommodate a house.

“I haven’t seen so much engagement since Swan-e-set,” said Councillor Janis Elkerton, referring to Swan-e-set Bay Resort & Country Club built in the 1990s and the standing-room only turnout. “It’s too dense, I won’t be supporting it,” she added.

Councillor Bruce Bell concurred.

“The whole thing should be two storeys only,” he said about the developer’s proposal of two-storeys only along Mitchell Road, but the rest of them three storeys.

Mayor Deb Walters said she commended the developer for returning to the table with a lower number of units and higher number of parking spots. “I don’t have a good feeling about this...

I do support higher density, but not this much,” she said.

Council voted unanimously to grant first and second reading to rezoning the 755-square metre lot, but to send the rest of the project back to the drawing board for the developer.

The 50 people who attended left the meeting satisfied, but the developers did not.

“We are disappointed because we’ve made all the concessions that they asked for,” said Brian Lamb, a realtor and spokesperson for Harvey Hatch Architect. “Our goal was to bring affordability to Pitt Meadows.”

Bridge caused major problems for drivers Tuesday.

The logging truck turned over on its side on the south side of the bridge, funneling traffic heading north on the bridge into one lane.

Vehicles approaching the accident were at a standstill.

Southbound traffic was impacted as well, as motorists slowed down to take a look.

Langley RCMP did a preliminary investigation and according to the driver, his load shifted while driving.

The driver tried to change lanes to offset the shift, but failed to halt the crash, said Cpl. Holly Marks.

Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) was expected to take over the accident investigation, as they deal with issues involving commercial trucks.

NEW DOG LICENSING FEES

Starting last year, Metro Vancouver has restricted residential lawn sprinkling hours between June 1 and September 30 to 4:00 am to 9:00 am. This is the time when the least amount of water used on lawns will evaporate and the most is absorbed. These restrictions help to ensure that the water demand does not exceed what our existing distribution system can deliver.

As of May 09, 2013, a new Dog Control Bylaw came into effect with updated dog licensing fees.

Lawn Sprinkling Regulations effective June 1st – September 30, 2013

Residential addresses: • Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 4-9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

• Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 4-9 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Non-residential addresses: • Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 1-6 a.m. Monday and Wednesday.

• Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 1-6 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

• All non-residential addresses can also sprinkle 4-9 a.m. Friday.

TIPS FOR WISE WATER USE • Leave grass clippings on your lawn to reduce evaporation.

• After you’ve finished playing in an inflatable pool, re-use the water by draining it in the garden.

• A healthy lawn only needs to be watered for one hour, once a week - or less if it rains.

The City officially unveiled two Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations at Civic Square on Harris Road on May 27.The City is now part of a larger, BC-wide network of charging stations which offer electric vehicle drivers extended travel options and more peace of mind.

The charging stations will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will initially provide free vehicle charging to promote increased use of electric vehicles.The project was made possible by a grant from the Fraser Basin Council’s Community Charging Infrastructure (CCI) Program,on behalf of the Province of BC.

Robocall fines bring shame Members of all the leading parties in the House of Commons should be hanging their heads in shame today.

The federal Conservatives and NDP have both been fined by the CRTC for breaking rules around robocalls, those annoying intrusions that interrupt our dinners to spew political invective.

In addition to the Tories and their Opposition, Liberal MP Marc Garneau, Conservative MP Blake Edwards, the Wildrose Scan this Alliance in Alberta and page with Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives, and a polling firm affiliated with both Wildrose and the Tories have been slapped down.

It seems that few of Canada’s politicians and professional political operatives bothered to find out what the rules were, or deliberately flouted them. They sent calls without properly identifying the party of record, or without giving enough contact information for recipients to call back.

This comes just weeks after Elections BC had to tell the provincial Conservatives to stop sending out election-day robocalls.

These fines and rulings only reinforce the feeling most people have when contacted by an automated political message: annoyance.

We have seen generally low levels of political engagement at almost every level in Canada over the past few decades.

Why should we be surprised by this when the main parties treat us like a simple mass that can be influenced by cheap recorded messages.

The CRTC’s fines are a welcome corrective to an abuse of the existing rules.

But perhaps we should call for robocalls to be banned entirely. If the politicans can’t use their toys responsibly, they’ll have to be taken away.

I am writing on behalf of the Maple Ridge Teacher-Librarians’ Association, a local specialist group affiliated with the BC Teacher-Librarians’ Association.

Cutting secondary teacher-librarian (TL) staffing, and only partially replacing them with clerks, will inevitably have a negative impact on school culture and student achievement in our district.

A school library is not just a “room with books.” It is a place for transformative learning, facilitated by teacher-librarians with specialized post-graduate training.

This training includes education technology, literacy, pedagogy, and collection development.

TLs also collaborate with their fellow teachers to develop and implement stimulating learning experiences.

In his recent ruling federal court judge Richard Mosley concluded that, although fraud was at play as a result of the robocalls in the 2012 federal election, the scale didn’t justify wiping out the results of voting in the six ridings.

That is why TLs have become “transliteracy” (transformational literacy) specialists: we help learners to evaluate and make meaning out of the information they can so easily access, and to use it to create something new.

Study after study has found a direct correlation between student achievement and school libraries staffed with full-time professional teacher-librarians.

If TLs in our district are only available part-time, student learning will suffer.

Next week is Seniors Week, but the activities kick off this Saturday with a tea at the Haney Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to noon.

The recently constructed Intergenerational Garden is proving to be a success, according to Heather Treleaven, coordinator for the Maple Ridge-

Pitt Meadows-Katzie Seniors Network, and it will be the venue of one of the activities this week.

Horticultural therapist Natasha Etherington will give a workshop this Sunday at 2 p.m. on the art of Japanese floral design, Ikebana, at the garden.

Billy Miner Alehouse and Cafe are celebrating a big win. The alehouse and cafe won the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award.

Worldwide travellers chose the Billy for this honour.

And not only that, they are reestablishing the old tradition that if a train whistle blows while your beer is being poured, the Billy buys, said cafe manager Angie Winter.

The Billy offers a unique experience in that it has two buildings – the pub and cafe – with two different licences. A family can go into the cafe and order anything from the pub side, according to Winter.

“Our big thing here is the 24 taps of craft beer and ales,” said Winter.

Flights are available, as well, which are four drinks for the price of one so that a customer can taste test a variety of beers or ales.

Ken Brookes and his business partners bought the pub three years ago. Brookes opened the cafe last year in the building next to the pub.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF GLEN ROBERT MCINNES 1932-2013 On April 21st 2013, a dear loved one had his life taken away tragically by a totally preventable traffic crash. This loved one was a great father, grandfather,greatgrandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many who cherished him.

The difference between life and death may have been as little as waiting five minutes for a passing lane; or simply being a little more patient, since aggressive driving is suspected in this car crash.

End result many attended funeral services for this dear loved one, to say good bye, to say good bye to Glen Robert McInnes. Please view these photos and let them serve as a reminder to SLOW DOWN, don’t be so impatient. Please encourage your loved ones to simply slow down and obey traffic laws. They are in place

to help protect all of us and our loved ones. Your actions may kill someone, can you live with that???? Ask yourself can you live with killing someone,

because it may take you a little longer to get somewhere, really what is your rush? This was a senseless tragedy that has affected many people and many will feel the hurt of this great loss for years to come. Our hearts go out to all other families who have had to endure similar tragedy. This is a hurt that no family should have to bare.

Track meet runs About 2,000 elementary students from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will descend on a Ridge high school next week for the Elementary School Track Meet.

“This year it is on Thursday and Friday, June 6 and 7, at Maple Ridge Secondary,” said Paul Moran, who has been coordinating the meet for nine years.

It starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. both days.

Burrards win 14-12 Maple Ridge Burrards’ Curtis Dickson tallied four times and set up six others, including scoring the game winner in a 14-12 win against the Western Lacrosse Association’s Coquitlam Adanacs on Saturday.
