The public is invited to a Sunday rally aimed at making a community safe for its kids.

The mothers and grandmothers of the Katzie First Nation want to take back their community for the next generation. Coleen Pierre said she’s tired of confrontations on the reserve in Pitt Meadows where she lives with people under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and she’s tired of feeling her community isn’t safe for kids – so she is organizing a rally this Sunday starting around 3 p.m. “reclaiming our community.” “We don’t feel safe anymore,” Pierre said, adding that “we want to have the ability to send our grandchildren to the park.” But with constant fear for their safety, they don’t have the freedom to do that any more, Pierre said. “Enough is enough – I want my community back,” she said. Katzie First Nation Pierre has invited drumSunday, Aug. 11 mers and sing3 p.m. ers to come 10946 Katzie Rd. from other First Nations bands to the event. Katzie resident Eileen Kenworthy will also be at the rally on Sunday. After a car fire a few weeks ago near the reserve where a man was severely burned and with a recent increase in drug-addicted people in the community, Kenworthy said she is tired of the fact that their children and grandchildren can’t play outside by themselves and they have to see drug-addicted people walking around. “Nobody is doing anything, so we have to – we as mothers, as grandmothers,” Kenworthy added.

George Leeder, the retired district fire chief from Firehall No. 1, gave his daughter Joanne Georgelin a comforting hug Tuesday. Her house was destroyed by a suspicious fire on the weekend, and the community has come together to help.

Victim overwhelmed by generosity
A family of four, who were burned out of their Dunbar Street home, were back Tuesday to receive a pile of donations. by Sylver McLaren
smclaren@mrtimes.com
Smiling through the tears was all Joanne Georgelin could muster Tuesday as friends and strangers pulled up in cars and unloaded household goods in front of the burnt out shell of her home. Those generous people answered a call by Georgelin’s neighbour Carla to donate nolonger-used household items and new items – like school supplies – to the uninsured family who lost everything in the Dunbar Street arson fire on Saturday morning. “The response was really lovely,” she told The TIMES, wishing she had everyone’s name so she could thank them personally. Georgelin, along with her daughters Rebecca and Elizabeth, as well as a family friend Haley Proudman, lost their home and almost all its contents in the early morning blaze. “We are feeling so grateful from the loving kindness of this community. Many of us were brought to tears yesterday with the response. I definitely tried to give everyone a hug that I

could,” Georgelin said. “We filled two pickups and a car trunk with stuff from silk plants to new coffee makers. I need to go actually make a list of things yet. We got a queen bed frame too. Some things that were so fun for the girls were items like a backpack full of new Ardene jewelry and accessories and another goodie bag filled with new nail polishes, school supplies, and flip flops,” Georgelin said, adding that they have enough clothes now thankfully. “It’s total devastation, but she is happy to be alive. That was a blessing,” said Carla, a friend who admitted that her role in this disaster is that of a caring and concerned neighbour who had lost a parent in a fiery helicopter crash when she was a child. “There have been so many people who have come forward,” Carla said about the outpouring of support for the Georgelins. The fire broke out at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday morning and the house was fully engulfed within minutes. It’s still under investigation. Carla is still hoping people will come through with more donations before the Aug. 16 deadline. She can be reached at 604-4638321 to make arrangements. In the meantime, financial donations can be made at Westminster Savings, account #451548214.
The owner of a house on 280th Street is lucky to be alive after being shot at during a home-invasion style robbery. Mounties were called to a house on 280th Street at about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6. It is alleged two men were confronted by the homeowner inside the residence, and one of the suspects fired a shot at the owner before the suspects ran out of the house, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. The suspects then stole the victim’s pickup in order to get away, she added, noting the owner was not injured. The stolen truck was found abandoned nearby at Ruskin Park, Dunlop said. “This is a very serious matter and it is being thoroughly Cpl. Alanna Dunlop investigated,” she said. Ridge Meadows RCMP “Police have received some valuable information from citizens in the area, and that info is being pursued,” Dunlop elaborated. “We are requesting for continued public assistance in solving this crime. Anyone who may have seen a vehicle or suspicious activity in the area of Ruskin Park in east Maple Ridge between 6 and 7 a.m. Tuesday morning is asked to call police as soon as possible,” she said. Anyone with any information is asked to call Const. Kathleen McKinney at 604-467-7604. Or, to remain anonymous people can call CrimeStoppers at 1-800222-8477 or leave a tip online at www.bccrimestoppers.com.

Kim Hotzon’s friends told her she had a story to tell about the time she spent in Japan – so she wrote a book about her experiences. But that was only the beginning of the story of her book. Hotzon, a Maple Ridge resident and an instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, self-published her book When the Cherry Blossoms Fall last year, but since then, her brain has switched from the creative, right-brain process of writing to the leftbrain business of marketing her book. “What I didn’t realize [was] marketing is a fulltime job,” Hotzon said. Hotzon was 22 when she went to Japan with her fiance to teach English. When she starts relaying her stories, she said hers always seems more intense and dramatic that other stories, and people tell her, “wow, you’re a storyteller.” When she started writing, her first goal was to just publish her story. Then, later, she wanted to recoup the cost of self-publishing. Now, she’s at the point where she’s making money and recently she’s been intensely marketing her book. Hotzon said she has learned so much from the marketing aspect of her book venture. In talking with authors who have been published by a publishing house, she has realized they are doing just as much marketing work as she is.
Kim Hotzon wrote a memoir about being a teacher in Japan.
Maria Rantanen TIMES
She has learned to know other authors through writing websites and she has found she’s in a similar situation to other authors marketing and promoting their books. “It really shows how much this industry is changing,” she said. Hotzon is doing a book signing this Saturday, Aug. 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Blackberry Books, 1666 Johnson St., Vancouver.

Ridge Meadows RCMP’s top cop, officer in charge Supt. Dave Walsh, is taking on a new challenge within the force. He has moved on to the role of the criminal operations program support officer at the RCMP’s regional E Division headquarters. He’ll be overseeing critical incident programs provincewide, including police service dogs, bomb squad, tacticalpublic order teams, underwater recovery and dive teams, the part-time emergency response teams, and crisis negotiations. “It is with sadness that I leave my role as officer in charge of Ride Meadows detachment, but with great excitement that I look forward to this Supt. Dave Walsh next new chalRidge Meadows RCMP lenge,” he told The TIMES. In his announcement, quietly made late last month, Walsh thanked his staff, as well as the mayors and council for “all their continued support.” Walsh said how much he enjoyed his time serving the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, and noted he will remain a local resident. Walsh has been a Mountie since the early 1980s, first stepping onto local soil as a police officer in 1993. He worked general duty and street enforcement before being promoted to corporal of the drug section in 2003. In 2006 he left Ridge Meadows RCMP and joined the province’s full-time emergency response team, then returned to Ridge in 2009 as superintendent. “It’s been a great experience and I look forward to my new role,” Walsh said.

The Haney Farmers Market and Golden Ears Cheesecrafters have teamed up to create a True North Fraser-branded epicurean event this Saturday evening, the Long Table Dinner, featuring Fraser Valley food and wine. “Not only are we featuring five wine-paired courses, but there will also be a sparkling wine reception featuring the best of our award-winning cheeses, plus other special treats throughout the evening,” said Lynn Davison, one of the owners of Golden Ears Cheesecrafters, which is hosting the alfresco event. Ridge teen Nicole Clark is sharing her music with the masses. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com
While most girls her age strolled through the local mall, caught a movie or two, or simply hung out with their friends, Nicole Clark spent her spring break hard at work. For Clark, it was the opportunity of a lifetime. The 17-year-old, who will enter her Grade 12 year at Thomas Haney Secondary School this September, can officially call herself a working musical artist. During her school break, Clark flew to Los Angeles to record two original songs that she co-wrote with producers/engineers Mike Getches and Shannon McArthur of Research Music and Sound (RMS). This Dress and Better Than You, recorded at RMS in Burbank, Calif., are currently downloadable on iTunes for 99 cents apiece. “It was pretty cool because I’ve never actually been in an actual studio before with all this professional equipment,” Clark said. The songs are “doing pretty good,” in terms of number of downloads, adding “I can’t check all the time how much there are, but it’s a decent amount.” By recording at RMS, Clark joined some rather elite company. The studio

Musician/songwriter Nicole Clark recently played guitar and sang in front of the ACT Theatre. has also produced music for such artists as Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars, Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz, Train, and Plain White T’s. One of the mikes she used was still in studio after being used by Hale. “It was a $40,000 mike, from somewhere in Europe,” Clark said. “And I got to use that for my songs, so that was really cool.” The recording sessions were a lesson in patience, but Clark didn’t mind. There were “many, many, many takes,” she related. “It’s not really frustrating because I love doing it so much,” Clark said. “It’s a really cool experience. I really enjoyed it all.”
Clark was contacted by RMS after videos she posted on YouTube caught the attention of McArthur. Her music career gained traction five years ago, when the then 12-yearold posted herself singing Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood songs on the wildly popular video sharing website. “It was just kind of a hobby, for fun,” she said. “I didn’t think anything big would come out of it.” In the fall, McArthur sent Clark a YouTube message, saying he liked her videos and was interested in working with her. Naturally, she was quite skeptical. “It’s a random guy messaging me,” Clark said.
She looked up McArthur’s name on the Internet, saw he was legit, and contacted him. “We just talked about plans for my music, how he wanted to write songs over Skype with me, and then I would go down to L.A. to record them with him and his other produ-
cer Mike [Getches],” Clark related. The result of this collaborative effort was This Dress, which Clark describes as fun, upbeat song, and Better Than You, which she says is a “more sad song.” The subjects of both songs traipse across very familiar landscape for Clark’s peer group. This Dress tells a tale of a teenaged girl’s crush on a boy; the ballad Better Than You is about a breakup and love gone astray. With plenty of help from the two producers, the songs flowed easily. This comes as no surprise considering that Clark has written about 20 original songs, all with accompanying music. “It comes pretty naturally,” she said, about songwriting. Singing and crafting music are just a couple of Clark’s many artistic talents. She practises jazz, tap,
ballet, hip hop, song and dance, lyrical, and contemporary styles of dance at Peggy Peat School of Dance and is also an actor, getting gigs through Reel 2 Reel Talent. So far she has appeared in two commercials, for Pizza Hut in which she throws her cap into the air after graduating, and for Delsym cough medicine, where she was in a spelling bee. She’s also a budding musician. Clark started taking guitar lessons at 14. “It probably took me around a year to get decent at it,” she said. “I kept progressing from there.” With so many opportunities in front of her, Clark, an honour roll student at THSS, isn’t sure what she’s going to do after she graduates next June. “I’m still unsigned from a record label, so I’m still looking to get some deals,” she said. “Right now I don’t have any clue what I’m doing after high school. There are so many things that I want to do.” Her dream is to have a debut album and believes she’ll be recording more tunes with RMS in the future.

Our View
Let’s all thank civil engineers
It’s the silly season in news, so it’s no surprise everyone on the planet heard about the Great Fatberg of London about five minutes after it was discovered. The fatberg, so named by Thames Water, is the largest single lump of congealed lard ever found in the London sewer system. It was so big, it was preventing nearby residents from flushing their toilets. Things could have turned much worse than a few backed up toilets, Scan this however. page with “If we hadn’t discovered it in time, raw sewage could have started spurting out of manholes across the whole of Kingston,” said Gordon Hailwood, a waste contracts supervisor for Thames Water. The sizeable pipe is now being repaired, and this will no doubt cause some inconvenience and grumbling. No one likes navigating around ripped up roads, and it’s not exactly cheap to replace major pieces of public infrastructure like this. A 40-year-old Maple Ridge man was clocked and ticketed for driving 80 km/h over the speed limit. He was fined and his car impounded for seven days. Readers spoke out: “Everyone is always in such a hurry!” – Lisa Telep-Barnett “Not sure why they bother to impound the vehicle (just a cash grab) when they should suspend the licence. That would be the right way to make sure they are off the road!” – Sue Kahlen Welsch “Let’s hope the fine makes him think twice!! in Mission until she needed more care. Moving to The Cedars assisted-living facility nearby, she received excellent care. When she required residential care, she was moved by Fraser Health to Menno Hospital in Abbotsford – not her choice, far from family and friends. Throughout, she received a subsidy appropriate to her pension to pay for the bed. At Menno, her care did not keep her mobile. As per Fraser Health guidelines, Mum could “move into a private pay residential setting while waiting for a suitable publicly subsidized residential-care bed,” and, “When a new bed becomes available in your preferred location, you will have the choice of accepting or declining it.” We moved her to a private pay bed in Maple Ridge. She is on the list to receive a subsidized bed in her facility, but the names never move up the list. Initially told it would be a two-year wait, her case manager says it might be six years. Mum had enough in her life savings to pay $5,700 per month for two and a half years, and now her life savings are gone. Still no subsidy re-instated. It’s amazing that 56 employees in Fraser Health earn $150,000 or more annually (the amount of Mum’s life savings), and 844 earn $100,000-plus. Perhaps these good people will be able to afford private pay beds of their choice. What about the little people who saved their money in good faith? Obviously, my mum didn’t make good career moves. A munitions factory worker during the war, she brought up five boys and took in foster kids needing medical attention. Alan Burns, Rock Creek

Artist
Ninety years of ‘Poignant’ cartoons re-released
Long-time Maple Ridge artist Ernie Poignant shares his illustrations and memoir for charity. by Christina Toth Special to The TIMES
There are few people, with the exception of someone like Mickey Rooney perhaps who can claim to have had a career that spans 90 years. However, such an allowance can be made for affable cartoonist Ernie Poignant. Now 94, he clearly remembers sitting on his Swedish grandmother’s lap at the age of four. She drew him a stick man, then asked him to draw one, too. He did, and made an improvement on it. “I thought it needed another line here,” he said with a chuckle, pointing to the drawing he still has. Since then, he has sketched funny stories or ideas he gets from his own experiences growing up, from the history of Abbotsford and the country

Cartoonist Ernie Poignant is still sketching cartoons, something he’s done for 90 years. He released a collection called Poignant Moments earlier this month, with all proceeds to go to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. and current affairs. One sketch, for example, shows Poignant as a small boy in the yard at his family’s chicken farm in Ridgedale, tethered to the clothesline post while his mom is hanging clothes. “That was before we had playpens. That’s what was done to keep an eye on the children,” he said from his Abbotsford apartment. After living in Maple Ridge for 45 years, he moved to Abbotsford in 2003. Over nine decades, he
must have created tens of thousands of panels that reflect on life from his own unique perspective. Earlier this month, he re-released a collection of some of his favourites, called Poignant Moments. “All the cartoons tell a story,” said Poignant, whose observant mind remains as sharp as his sketch pen. He will donate all the proceeds from the sale of the 92-page collection to the Canucks Place
Children’s Hospice in Abbotsford. Poignant admits that some of the cartoons referencing the old days, before cellphones and computer, even television, may go over the heads of younger people today. “I say, if you don’t understand the cartoon, ask some one over 80,” he chuckled. As a boy growing up on his family’s chicken farm in the hamlet of Ridgedale on Matsqui Prairie, cartooning was a hobby for Poignant, a respite from doing farm chores. In those days, it was a fad among girls to collect names or a clever verse in autograph books, he said, “but I’d always put in a funny cartoon.” His sketches chronicled life during the Great Depression, then during the war years: the efforts at home, the boys who went off to war and the enemies they faced abroad. After a career in the newspaper business, where he worked as a paste-up artist and part-time editorial cartoonist, he continued to use his talents to bring

STORE CLOSING FINAL DAYS NEAR!
Silver Valley residents rerouted
Troy Landreville/TIMES
Work is underway to replace the 232nd Street bridge over the North Alouette River. Work began July 16, and that section of roadway will be closed for the next six months. The $4.75-million construction project will see the existing 70-year-old wooden bridge replaced by early 2014. The new steel and concrete bridge will provide two lanes for vehicle traffic, as well as a separate multi-use pathway to be shared by pedestrians, cyclists, and those on horseback. In the meantime, traffic has been shut down on 232nd Street just north of 132nd Avenue. A temporary bridge for pedestrians has been set up, but horses are not permitted to pass through the area. Construction will leave Silver Valley residents driving a longer route in and out of the area.

Strolls
Puttering in the garden can head off later problems
A
quiet walk around the garden doesn’t have to be long or energetic, but done frequently and with a thoughtful eye, it can blend relaxation therapy with creative dreams and casual trouble-shooting of problems that are just starting. Deadheading is one example. Picking off a few dead rose blooms every time you pass a rose bush encourages certain kinds, such as ‘Bonica’ or Rosa chinensis to rebloom, yet it’s very little deadheading in any one walk. Some roses, such as the ‘Flower Carpet’ series, are selfcleaning – the petals drop without help. Tidy gardeners may clean up the petals, but in hot summer days, fallen petals with-
er quickly away. The heritage roses can be deadheaded, but almost all won’t bloom again. The Gallica roses are especially interesting. If the blooms are picked and dried, some retain most of their colour and all of their scent. Weeding can be casual in hot summers. Weeds without flower heads can be pulled and left in place to wither. A couple of days, and they will have dried to almost nothing. People who have left seedheads to develop on plants they plan to propagate can easily collect seed by walking around with a bucket with a few recycled brown paper bags, pruners, and a pencil to label what’s collected. It works well for poppy seed, Nigella, Siberian irises, dill, pars-
ley, corn salad, and arugula seed. Seed of lilies, allium, camas, hardy agapanthus, dianthus, and many more can be collected by waiting till seed-heads are dry on the stalk, cutting them, and upending the seed-heads in a paper bag and shaking. Not all the seeds shake loose, but if you have chosen a big sheaf of dry seedheads, you’ll get lots of seed anyway. If you don’t want accidental seedlings in your compost, the half-empty seed heads can go to the local green waste program. Not all seeds come through the lower temperatures of home composting, but some seeds do. That’s why seed-heads of weeds and lethally poisonous plants such as hellebores and aconitum should never be composted.
When fall rains begin, scattering home-collected seed in places where you’d like more of the original plants is an easy puttering activity. Seed that is best scattered in spring should spend winter in a refrigerator or some cool place. Snipping herbs for drying is another pleasant way of spending an early evening walk during hot summer days. Past generations of gardeners would hang herb bunches in kitchens, where hazards included spiders and dust. Drying herbs within paper bags protects them, but lacks that oldtime ambience. Nowadays, people freeze herbs, or oven-dry at a low temperature. Microwaving is said to work if a few herb stems are put inside a fold of wax paper. But

quantities have to be small, and fire can be a hazard. Checking for pests and diseases, removing or treating diseased or badly infested plants, and snipping off suspicious leaves and twigs can combine puttering and heading off trouble before it gets really started. But often you see the problem and the remedy on the same plant – for instance aphids and ladybugs. Sometimes watching and waiting turns out to be the right approach after all.

Burrards take first in weekend provincials Maple Ridge Burrards won the gold medal in the A division by defeating the previously undefeated Richmond Roadrunners, who come away with the silver, 12-6 in the final game at the 2013 Intermediate Provincial Championships, Aug. 2 to 5 at Planet Ice, Maple Ridge. “Our goalkeeper Connor David just recently won the award as the league’s top goalkeeper for
lowest goals against average and highest save percentage and I have a few players up for the league ending awards due to the strong talent on my roster,” said Doug McQuarrie, head coach. “My offence is deadly strong and my opponents know this coming in this weekend and all year long,” he said. “My defence consists of elite athletes that know very well how
to play the systems that have been put in place and I have two of the very best goalkeepers in the league that can steal games at any time,” he added. In this league, fitness and conditioning are mandatory so the Burrards brought in a full-time trainer this season from Victoria. The trainer has put these athletes in top form from exhausting dry-land sessions to doing
the Grouse Grind as a team, McQuarrie explained. They started tryouts Jan. 13 with dry-land training with more than 60 players that was dwindled down to a roster total of 24 for April. This is a focused group that from the very start had two goals: inning the league title and then winning provincials, McQuarrie said.
