The temperature topped the charts on Canada Day at the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows festivities. By noon it was 31 degrees Celsius and still rising. However, dignitaries and others stayed refreshed by drinking lots of water that was being handed out by the Lions Clubs. In Pitt Meadows, Mayor Deb Walters gave a heartfelt speech about the love she has for Canada. “To say I am a proud Canadian would be an understatement. We live in a spectacular country, rich with resources and incredible beauty,” she said. “We are a diverse nation with the freedom to gather together in public spaces, to learn from each other, respect each other’s cultures, and celebrate our great community... We are Canada and there is no better country in the world,” said Walters.

Nolan Dingwall, three, led the way in the bike parade at Canada Day in Pitt Meadows (left). Officers in red serge (above) stood on guard for Canada in Maple Ridge.

Christina Johnstone, Niamh O’Dwyer, and Mikayla Tinkham, all from Golden Ears Running Club, ran the Canada Day 8-k Charity Run, put on by Athletes In Kind.

Drunk driving reduced Having one of Canada’s toughest provincial drinking and driving laws has helped to save a few lives, according to the spokesperson at Ridge Meadows RCMP. The figures, which covers the first six months of Ridge Meadows RCMP Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) program, are the lowest recorded. In 2013, (from January to June 24), 111 injury crashes and three fatal crashes compared to the same months in 2012, 151 injury crashes and four fatal crashes. • More at www.mrtimes.com

Tax petition restarted Signatures are being collected again this year asking for zero per cent tax increase. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

As Pitt Meadows residents were dropping by municipal hall to pay their taxes on Friday, some were stopping at a table set up by Tom Murray to sign a petition against tax increases. Last year, Murray, a former school trustee collected about 1,200 signatures on a petition asking for a zero per cent increase in property taxes. “Twelve hundred people had no impact at all,” he said. “I would like to get 2,500 this time.” Murray said his “biggest grief” is wage increases to senior staff and council and thinks there are other ways as well to cut municipal expenses. Murray doesn’t think that comparing salaries to other municipalities is the way to determine salaries because Pitt Meadows is only a town of 18,000. The petition asks the City of Pitt Meadows to “target” a zero per cent increase. Murray plans to have his petition in front of City hall today (on Tuesday), and then to go door to door and ask others to go door to door collecting signatures as well. There are a lot of ways to cut back, Murray said, cutting “a little here and little here.” He said he knows that

Our View

Cut, cut, cut

Energy minister Bill Bennett at least had the good grace to admit that his job of trimming the fat from the government’s finances won’t be easy. Buried within the new throne speech and budget this week was the news that it was time, yet again, to rein in government spending. First, $30 million has to be cut from government spending this year. According to the Vancouver Sun, that will save the average family a whopping $42. Scan this But next April, page with Bennett has to slice $100 million out of the provincial budget. That’s on top of the hiring freezes, wage freezes, red-tape cutting, budgetslashing, and general cost-cutting that has already been done over the past 12 years in B.C. Bennett boldly declared “it can be done.” He also promised (as does every government, and indeed every carbon-based life form that has ever considered running for office in Canada) to protect key social services like health and education. How, exactly, does that work? It’s not that we want to see government spending skyrocket. No one wants to see any government start building (to pick a couple of examples at random) a giant stadium upgrade for the benefit of millionaires, or a fleet of ill-designed ferries. But after a while, you start to wonder if there’s any fat left to cut. You have to pay the people who work for the government. You have to buy stuff to build roads and hospitals and schools. It’s a fundamental fact that a civilized society costs money. We hope that those in Victoria know that, after a while, you have to take a break from cutting. Sometimes, you want to cut taxes. But sometimes you have to raise them. Sometimes you can privatize things, but some things are too valuable to be left to the whims of the profit-driven private sector. So cut, but please, stop before you hit the bone. – M.C.

Too many people to keep old town Dear Editor,

What is it about Maple Ridge that will not let this community succeed as other communities have, by moving forward with building a balanced city, with commercial and retail jobs that keep people working and spending locally? Ask anyone where they shop, and you will get varying answers, but the majority will say, “Not in Maple Ridge.” It is a pity, but true. The demand is here but not the facilities. Contributing to eco-

Taxes always after elections Dear Editor,

It’s property tax time again. Ever wonder why politicians never have an election at this time of year? They don’t want to try to get elected with the latest tax increase fresh in the minds of residents. And it seems getting elected causes selective memory loss in politicians, especially if there were any promises about cutting taxes. They all have a skewed idea of the job of city government, because reducing spending is just not part of their mentality. Raises for city council and staff are no problem, just another quick vote. Taxpayers are being bled dry, one mosquito bite at a time.

Young leaders need welcome Dear Editor,

Young women like Corisa Bell should be encouraged to think for themselves and ask questions. After all, they are the future of Maple Ridge taxpayers. Instead of making her feel unwelcome and like an interloper, Maple Ridge Mayor Daykin and the more experienced councillors should be showing some leadership. Why would they want to discourage people like her from participating, by treating them badly?

turn lanes or lights to aid smooth traffic flow. It takes money for necessary upgrades, which a residential tax base can’t afford. Al Hogarth and ex-mayor Don MacLean have said repeatedly that it costs $1.25 to deliver one dollar worth of services to residential properties. Maple Ridge has allowed residential property to build to a point where there are very few services in areas like Albion. Albion was to offer costeffective housing. Smaller lots lowered costs, but also caused crowding and parking issues. Now council wants to stop all secondary suites that made this area affordable in the first place. Talk about a Catch 22 and the consequence of poor planning. Now we hear of another 250 homes in the planning stage. For well over 20 years I have seen councils and mayors come and go. All of them had one common trait: keeping Maple Ridge the quiet and quaint little town that they grew up in. But that was 40,000 people ago, and we will continue to grow, because we live in a very beautiful area. At some point, we need a council to change direction, a positive direction aimed at a commercial tax base. Maple Ridge is almost 80,000 people. We should be a city. Just saying… Jim Bulpit, Maple Ridge

Join in and have some fun with Who Am I? The Facebook feature is part of a twice-weekly TIMES contest, where readers are asked to identify people from this community’s distant and recent past. For instance, who’s the subject of this week’s picture? Readers can “Like Us” on Facebook and answer before 9 a.m. Friday to be entered to win. Our picture of Jimmy McMyn, member of a Pitt Meadows pioneer family, stumped our readers last week. No one identified him in our photo, circa 1910, of him riding in a horse and buggy. All those who rise to the challenge this week will be entered in the grand-prize draw.

HAYWARD LAKE RESERVOIR BEACHES CLOSED MAY TO AUGUST 2013 Access to the beaches on the Hayward Lake Reservoir will be closed this summer as the water level will be drawn down to 33 metres beginning in May. The beaches have a very steep drop-off and cannot be used safely when the water is very low. The drawdown is required for construction related to the Ruskin Dam and Powerhouse Upgrade Project and will comply with the conditions of the Water Licence. The Hayward Lake boat launch will also be out of service during the drawdown. The picnic grounds and the parking lot at the Hayward Lake Reservoir Recreation Area remain open. Other closures may be required for construction use or for safety requirements. For current closures, please check www.bchydro.com/closures. Last week’s dull, wet “Juneuary” weather didn’t take the shine off Christina Proteau’s golf game in Pitt Meadows. The Port Alberni native captured the 2013 B.C. Women’s Mid-Amateur title at the par-74, 6,220-yard Pitt Meadows Golf Club after a blistering round of four-under-par 70. In the final round, Proteau put together what would be a tournamenttying low 70 (broken five minutes following its posting), allowing her to surpass 23 other competitors on way to victory. “Today was a very good round especially given the lack of momentum coming into it. I wasn’t feeling too super after yesterday’s round,” a jubilant Proteau said Thursday, after hearing her named called as the champion. Proteau started her championship off with a 76 followed by an uncharacteristic plus-six, 80. It was this round that Proteau was referring to before she picked apart Pitt Meadows on Thursday with five birdies and a single bogey to post plusfour overall, 226 total (7680-70). Proteau notched her third women’s mid-amateur title in five years and could have been victorious in last year’s event if it weren’t for losing in a playoff to Kyla Inaba. “I was thinking about last year a little bit today

Port Coquitlam’s Soo-Bin Kim teed off on the eighth hole at Pitt Meadows Golf Club on Thursday, during the second-to-last day of the B.C. women’s amateur golf championships. Kim was two strokes back of first-round leader Cassy Isagawa of Wailuku, Hawaii heading into the final round of action Friday. and it did motivate me,” Proteau said. “For me, that did sting and that sting stayed with me a little while. It was motivation to not feel like that again.” Proteau was incredibly happy when reminded that she could raise the Jackie Little trophy as mid-amateur champion. “Jackie is a good friend of mine and started off as a mentor to me when I was younger at my first B.C. [women’s] amateur,” mentioned Proteau. “It is an honour. Jackie is a Hall of Famer and a first class competitor so to win something with her name on it is awesome.”

Finishing runner-up in the mid-amateur division was Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay. Stouffer was unable to hang onto her second round single-stroke lead because she ran into a redhot Proteau. Stouffer would, however, be crowned the Master-40 division champion thanks to rounds of 78-77-76, 231 total. Holly Horwood of Vancouver finished solo third after consistent rounds of 80-80-79, 239 total. Meanwhile in the amateur division, things were heating up heading into

the final round this past Friday. First round leader Cassy Isagawa of Wailuku, Hawaii shot a course-record six-under-par 68 third round to post a 54-hole, 212 total. This put Isagawa at minus-10 overall, two strokes ahead of second round leader and good friend Soo-Bin Kim of Port Coquitlam. Kim kept herself within reach of her NCAA com-

petitor compliments of a three-under-par 71, 214 total (72-71-71). Sitting in solo third was Kelowna’s Megan Osland who is at minus-four, six strokes back of Isagawa (71-76-71). “Today was a pretty steady day. I finally made an eagle today,” mentioned Isagawa. “It feels good knowing that I played good today. I made a few mistakes out there but no round is perfect.” Asked about playing with her friend in Friday’s final round, Isagawa seemed excited at the chance to perform with her good mate. “Soo-Bin and I have known each other since 2008 so it is good to have a competitor like her and the other B.C. girls going into the final round,” Isagawa said. The reigning champion from 2012 in Richmond’s Christine Wong sat tied with Surrey’s Taylor Kim and Coquitlam’s Jennifer Yang at minus-three, seven strokes back of Isagawa’s pace. • Final round results from the B.C. women’s amateur championships were not available due to early holiday weekend press deadlines.

Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
