Summer has arrived and no one remembers the last rainfall. This week’s temperatures are expected to stay in the mid 20s until at least Saturday. So how are residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows beating the heat? The TIMES hit the street to find out. Mother Denise Bonner took her two boys to Harris Road Park outdoor pool. It’s a place the family has enjoyed for decades according to Bonner. Her husband spent many summers in the same pool their boys now enjoy. “It’s beautiful,” she said. “And you

there was a small, unmarked area along the beach where cell service is available. At the very least, the 25-year-old Coquitlam woman wants to see the cell area clearly marked, and wants a “doughnut” hung on an emergency tower at the beach. “It’s the least we can do to honour Jacob,” Partridge said, insisting she’s going to launch a letter-writing campaign. “This is not acceptable. If this is such a popular lake, why are there no safety measures in place?” Rutzen-Gibbs was a Best Buy employee, on leave at the time of the accident. He was a devout Canucks fan who loved the outdoors, road hockey, climbing the Grouse Grind, and vanilla Coke, his aunt said. “He was just a really good kid,” Rasmussen added. He is survived by his father, mother, stepfather, three sisters, and a large extended family. While the family is preparing for services at Burquitlam Funeral Home in Coquitlam, on Wednesday at 10 a.m., they’re asking that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Canuck Place in Rutzen-Gibbs’ memory.

Family and friends are in shock over the untimely death of a young man at Alouette Lake late last week. Services will be held Wednesday for Jacob Rutzen-Gibbs, a 21-year-old Port Coquitlam man who was swimming with friends at Golden Ears Provincial Park Thursday afternoon when he ran into problems and drowned. While he wasn’t what his aunt Beverlee Rasmussen calls a strong swimmer, he could typically hold his own. The Langley woman noted he and friends were in bounds and only a dozen or so yards from the shore when the mishap occurred. His friend and former co-worker Jennifer Partridge, who was swimming only a few feet behind him, said it all happened quickly. For the second time in less than a week, she and a handful of other friends – including Rutzen-Gibbs – headed up to Alouette to This was the third drowning this past barbecue and “hang out in the water.” Rutzen-Gibbs, 21, was a Port Coquitlam man who drowned weekend. Emergency response
Calls keep crews busy
Police were dispatched to incidents on 224th and 242nd streets, one right after the other. by Sylver McLaren
smclaren@mrtimes.com
There was a fire Saturday night started by a kiln stored behind a garage in the 22600 block of 136th Avenue. The fire spread to a fibreglass canopy and the attic above the garage, said Maple Ridge’s assistant fire chief Timo Juurakko. “It was a quick knockdown,” Juurakko said, adding that the damage was contained to the garage attic. “All of the artist’s tools and equipment are undamaged,” he added. In police news, two accidents happened within minutes of each other in Maple Ridge on Thursday afternoon – one at
224th Street and Lougheed Highway, the other at 242th Street and 102nd Avenue. A crash in Albion was witnessed by Chase Saunders, 16, and he said it was “lucky no kids were hurt.” “It happened so fast. I’m actually kind of shocked and shaking. I’ve never been so close to an accident before,” he said. “I’ve been in an accident, but I’ve never been so close to getting hit... I’m glad I was on the sidewalk,” said Saunders, who added that he felt the impact and was hit with flying glass. Fire crews were on scene directing traffic. And firefighter Marco Bonifazi remarked that “everyone was out of the vehicles when we arrived.” The other incident happened in the heart of downtown Haney at 2:15 p.m., where a 88-year-old man was crossing in the sidewalk on his scooter and was hit by a westbound car. Police say he was taken to hospital with minor bumps and abrasions.
Chase Saunders, 16, said he was so close to a collision on Thursday on 242nd Street that he felt it.

Every second Friday Maple Ridge Alliance Church holds a blood donor clinic. smclaren@mrtimes.com
Canadian Blood Services activated the blood signal and is urgently asking eligible people to donate blood at Maple Ridge Alliance Church. While this location usually does well, an organizer said they need more. “We need 168 more donations in Maple Ridge in August,” said Sarah Jasmins, Canadian Blood Services partnership specialist. One donator is Wayne Johnston, who was giving blood for the 25th time. “My son had cancer when he was young,” Johnston said. “He was diagnosed with leukemia when he was three and has been in remission for about eight years,” he added. Florence and Lawrence Sweeney volunteered at the church during the blood drive on Friday. “It’s been great volunteering. I find it very rewarding,” said Florence, 73. “They are always looking for volunteers,” her 80-year-old husband added. The senior couple started volunteering after they moved to Maple Ridge from Montreal 10 years ago. “We thought it was a good way to meet people,” Florence added. Ed Yee, the director of donor and clinic services, said summer holidays are always a hard time to donate. “With summer activities and vacations we find that our booked appointments

Patients in hospitals still require transfusions of blood products for surgeries, cancer treatments, and other procedures,” he said. Just one seriously injured person could need as many as 50 blood donations to help save his or her life. Every second Friday a blood donation clinic is held at the Alliance Church. Our View
Water can pose dangers Two more people drowned over the weekend – one in the Okanagan and another on Vancouver Island. On July 18, this community also experienced a drowning. A 21-yearold Port Coquitlam man drowned in Alouette Lake. So far this year, 43 people have drowned in B.C., almost twice as many as the same period last year. The Lifesaving Society of B.C. and the Yukon keeps track, and said drowning numbers are rising over the long term. Scan this No one should have page with to avoid going to B.C.’s lakes and waterways. In addition to offering stunning scenery and recreation opportunities, they can be vital during hot spells at providing places for people to cool off, but B.C. lakes, rivers, creeks, and watercourses are also places where people can get into trouble. Swimming in a lake is different from swimming in a pool. Bodies of water have their own currents, and lake and river water levels change throughout the year. The temperature of natural water bodies is usually colder, as well. People can’t assume that, because a lake site or other waterfront spot is public, there will be help at hand. Cutbacks have meant there are few lifeguards at public lakes and swimming spots around B.C. And it takes time for emergency crews to get to these spots. As has been shown, a person can still drown or get into serious trouble when surrounded by hundreds – and sometimes thousands – of others. Often by the time a person realizes he or she is in trouble, there’s not the energy or voice to summon help. Always use safety gear in or near water, keep the booze at home, and before any risky behaviours or extreme adventures, always assume you are not as good a swimmer/diver/boater as you imagine. – H.C.

Development
High density need questioned
Dear Editor, I’m not against development, but do we really need higher density in Albion? Whatever happened to the idea of a balance of residential and commercial? Of course, developers love the concept. Under the proposed bylaw, density could be increased by allowing 557-square-metre
lots in zones which were intended for half-acre lots of 2,023 square metres. That’s almost four times the number of lots. I’m sure the contribution of $3,100 per lot to the municipality is a “drop in the bucket” against the profit potential. Does all this development come with a guarantee of a

Of course, she has plenty of excuses: more of the old “dog ate my homework” and laying the blame on other government agencies. Just once, I’d like to see Walters and her crew spend time on the city budget and reduce costs. Hmmm, reducing costs – what a novel idea, considering this council’s sense of entitlement to our wallets! It appears the only pipe dream of relief will be when the next election approaches. At that time you can be sure that council will suddenly make some cost-cutting promises… which they will “forget” after the election. Archie Blankers, Pitt Meadows
school or any retail zoning? What about increased transit service? All we’re doing is creating more financial stress on our local economy that is in dire need of more commercial development to provide a stronger tax base. One dollar spent on residential adds up to $1.25 in cost to service and maintain. It’s obvious that we’re all fed up having to spend our hard-earned dollars outside Maple Ridge, but as much as this current group of councillors, save a few, does not seem to be able to stand the heat of criticism. Many have been around long enough, while they have let opportunity after opportunity slip through their hands. Just look at Freemont Village in Port Coquitlam. With stronger leadership, Maple Ridge can seize future opportunities and build a better balance of commercial and residential development. Grover Telford, Maple Ridge

Most people here get a slap on the wrist and maybe a fine.” – Katie Sheppard “He also has to live the rest of his life knowing what he did, and from the moment it happened, he admitted he was in the wrong and it was all his fault.” – Janessa Munz “Unfortunately, he can NEVER undo what he did, no matter how much time he gets. Maple Ridge council
Dear Editor, Reports of measures that have been taken by the mayor and, apparently, the majority on Maple Ridge council against Councillor Corisa Bell are strange and disturbing. As the result of Ms. Bell’s questioning of spending at municipal hall, lawyers advised Mayor Daykin that Ms. Bell may have defamed someone. Who is alleged to have been defamed? The public hasn’t been told.
Hard to smile?
The mayor and council have withheld from Ms. Bell a copy of the tape of the June 17 meeting at which this supposed transgression took place. Yet lawyers for the municipality have viewed the document. So those who have cast Ms. Bell as one whose actions warrant examination by lawyers are unwilling to provide her with the opportunity to defend herself by providing the evidence to her legal counsel. She has reviewed the tape and can tell her legal counsel what it says, but that is not sufficient. Lawyers cannot provide adequate assistance with regard to evidence they have not been able to view. The June 17 meeting was one of the regular committee of the whole meetings that council holds. It was not an “in camera” meeting where information is not available to the public, but was a public meeting. Yet the tape of the meeting was taken down from the municipal website and the public is not allowed to view it. It’s beginning to appear that council does not intend to allow the public to ever view the tape. I would be surprised if a court of law would uphold the withholding of this information from the public. Apparently, the tape was taken down from the municipal website to protect the municipality against potential legal action for disseminating remarks by Ms. Bell’s that may have defamed someone. Yet council seems to maintain that Ms. Bell herself is under no threat of legal action. Councillor Cheryl Ashlie has stated that Ms. Bell is under no legal threat. How can the municipality be under threat of legal action for disseminating Ms. Bell’s remarks but Ms. Bell herself is not under any such threat? Having one’s name in print in association with words like defamation, and having lawyers consulted on the matter is intimidating. To suggest that Ms. Bell is not being threatened is not accurate. What did Ms. Bell say that was so threatening? The public has a right to know. It’s pretty clear that Ms. Bell’s questioning has ruffled feathers at municipal hall, and that a heavy-handed attempt has been made to stifle her. Ms. Bell is owed an apology or two. Michael Sather, Maple Ridge

She also expressed thanks to the Pitt Meadows fire department. As the day progressed and the weather got hotter, the biggest draw for the children was an ongoing 25-plus-foot high waterfall of refreshing water created by a hose mounted on the fire department’s ladder truck. “Overall, it was a spectacular day. It turned out to be just great,” Zannet concluded. “It will be bigger and better next year.”

The team at Starbucks at 227th Street and Dewdney Trunk Road kept yours truly cool with a beverage. Thanks to Lina Mavan and Alex Neff.
Adults may prefer to beat the heat with a cool beverage like those served up at the local legion. “We’re sitting in here drinking [to stay cool],” said Jim Gobelle. “We were out golfing,” explained Lynda McEwan. “But it got too hot.” The employees at Firefly Wines and Ales on Lougheed Highway have a large walk-in cooler for the beer and ale products. On hot days, it’s not uncommon to find one or two of the staff “chilling out” in the cooler. Jason Armitage agreed with Gobelle that a frosty beverage was
the best way to beat the heat. “Beer and wine all the way,” Armitage said. No matter what the weather is like, it seems the folks in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are a crafty bunch and will manage to find ways to deal with it.
