◗ SUMMER FUN IN THE CITY

Pick your cool pool

New West is expanding activities at outdoor pools during Canada Games closure BY CAYLEY DOBIE REPORTER cdobie@royalcityrecord.com

Looking for a way to escape the summer heat that doesn’t involve air conditioning or hiding in the basement? Look no further than Moody or Hume Park’s outdoor pools, says Hilary Knowles, aquatics facility manager for New Westminster. “We’ve got kind of an interesting summer,” she said. “Canada Games Pool is closing down for a two-month closure and we purposely chose some of the summer months so we were able to offer alternative programs up at Moody and Hume.” Canada Games Pool will be closed from Aug. 12 to Oct. 4 and so the city has decided to offer some of the programs normally run at the indoor pool, outside at the outdoor pools this summer. This includes an expanded outdoor lessons schedule from

the beginning of August to the end of the month, with lessons Monday to Friday in the early afternoons as well as Tuesday and Thursday evening lessons. “We’re also staying open an extra week

into September, so once everyone goes back to school the (Moody Park) pool is actually open until September the ninth,” she said. This was decided as a way to gauge

interest in outdoor pools in September and see if it’d be worth it to keep them open longer for school groups, Knowles added. ◗Pools Page 9

NEW WEST TEACHERS RECEIVE SEVEN TIMES WHAT BURNABY TEACHERS GET FOR PRO-D

Teachers cash in with generous benefit plans

BY NIKI HOPE REPORTER

The cash-strapped New Westminster school district spends approximately $1 million on benefits for job-sharing teachers working a minimum of two days a week, and another $276,000 a year for teachers to use, at their own discretion, for their professional development. The board of education turned over every couch cushion to dig for savings, but the job-share benefits and the individual pro-

fessional development fund weren’t on the chopping block because they are contractually guaranteed. But with dwindling resources and major layoffs, secretarytreasurer Al Balanuik said the doubling of benefits presents a “financial challenge.” “If we have two teachers in a Grade 2 classroom, we actually spend an additional $20,500 – these are ballpark figures – extra, which is the approximate cost of the extra benefits package,” Balanuik explained.

Currently, there are about 50 teachers in the district who work part-time and receive the fulltime package. Every school district in the province has job shares, Balanuik said. Some districts manage the number of job shares that are permitted, and the rules are outlined in union contracts. “We don’t have language that restricts the number of job shares. We do have the right to manage our system – management right. But, again, our practice has been to look at each application,

and, for the most part, we have approved requests to reduce teaching assignments,” he said. The district and the union are currently in contract talks, but Balanuik said at this point, “There is no language that would see us depart from the current framework.” In the neighbouring Burnaby school district, part-time teachers are entitled to full-time benefits, but they must pay a greater cost if they work less, Burnaby’s secretary-treasurer Greg Frank said. As for professional develop-

ment in Burnaby, teachers receive $110 per year for their individual development (the figure increases slightly with general wage increases), according to Burnaby’s collective agreement. The money – approximately $220,000 a year for a district that had 1,499 full-time teaching positions in 2011/12, according to the Burnaby Teachers’ Union, compared to New Westminster’s 368 for next year – is “jointly” managed between the union and the district, Frank said.
