New West 7 at Van Dop It’s the Group of Seven, Royal City style. New Westminster’s Van Dop Gallery is hosting a special exhibition featuring a group of artists it’s dubbed the New West 7 – seven well-known artists who live and work in the city. The New West 7 exhibition will be part of the 10th annual New West Cultural Crawl on Saturday and Sunday. A press release notes that visitors can check out the fine art and street photography of Gabor Gasztonyi, whose acclaimed book A Room in the City revealed the lives of many of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside residents. Sharing a studio with Gasztonyi is Judith Copland, an established artist with more than 20 years of experience and as many solo exhibitions. Leslie Poole, a lifelong Royal City resident, is one of the country’s most exhibited artists, with more than 100 solo exhibitions in Canada and the U.S. during his active 40-year career. Angela Au Hemphill, a local painter who belongs to the Federation of Canadian Artists, has won international recognition for her work, winning the 2010 Spilsbury Gold Medal award. Jim Walsh, who paints under the alias J. Charles, is a local photographer, painter and teacher who started his career in New York and has seen his work exhibited across Canada and the U.S. Teressa L. Bernard, also a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, was a silver medallist at the 2007 Spilsbury Medal Show and has work in collections across the country. New to the gallery is Ceci Lam, a longtime participant in the Eastside Cultural Crawl, who brings her self-described “euphoric dance with colour” to the local exhibition. The Van Dop Gallery is a converted New Westminster heritage property at 421 Richmond St. It will be open during the New West Cultural Crawl from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., along with a host of other participating galleries and locations. Linfoot’s new exhibition, Everyone Talks About the Weather… is opening at the Amelia Douglas Gallery at Douglas College on Aug. 8. “I don’t really make landscape paintings. I make paintings about landscape,” Linfoot says in a press release. “I want people to view my work and rethink the idea of landscape, of locating oneself in the geography of time and place.” The exhibition will run from Aug. 8 to Sept. 6, with an artist’s talk on Sept. 6 at 10 a.m., and a closing reception that evening from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with live music by Little

Mountain Trio. The gallery is on the fourth floor north at Douglas College, 700 Royal Ave. It’s open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibition will be open special hours for the New Westminster Cultural Crawl –11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday For more on and Sunday, Aug. the Cultural 10 and 11. Among the photos will be the winning entry by Tatum Wulff, Living the Good Life on the Quay, along with the four runners-up: Blue Wall, by Brooke MacDonald; Twilight Mist, by Janet Kvammen; Rollin’ through Royal City, by Sean Gorsuch; and Old Car Parade on 12th Street, by Brenda Fairfax. Several honourable mentions will also be included in the show. That’s pretty much what art is all about – and it’s the focus of a poetry workshop at the New Westminster Public Library on Monday, Aug. 12. A library press release notes that the workshop, set for 7:30 p.m., will look into various types of passions and their effects and influence on our inspiration. “The use of poetic works will help explore how emotions influence writing. The balance of the workshop will focus on methods of developing and painting passion and acquiring new inspiration,” the release notes. The workshop is led by Deborah Kelly, who has been writing poetry for more than 40 years. She currently hosts and features with Poetic Justice in New Westminster, has been the recipient of the Poet of Merit award from the International Society of Poets and has published her poetry in numerous Canadian and international publications. HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION HAS NEW CEO – AGAIN

The Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC has a new CEO as Neil Moody officially took the helm August 1 – just a few months after the hiring of the previous CEO. “After a lengthy recruitment process which brought forth several impressive candidates, we are pleased to welcome Neil as our new CEO,” said CHBA BC president Nathan Stone. “Neil’s strong background in membership-driven associations will serve British Columbia’s residential construction sector well as we move forward in these challenging but exciting times. His experience working with national governments as well as business organizations will allow us to continue to grow as an industry association.” Previous hire Brian Bonney, a former B.C. government director of communications for multiculturalism who was brought on as CHBA BC’s CEO in February,

stepped down in March after less than a month in the position. Moody has a long history in the industry, including an early career as a builder and subcontractor of singlefamily homes in White Rock. His most recent position was as a real estate investment and renovation consultant and has strong ties to Asian markets, having spent 14 years as executive director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan. He also chaired the Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Japan, and helped form the Canadian Chambers of Commerce and Business Associations in Asia, which represents more than 3,000 members.

“This is an exciting time to take on a leadership position within the residential construction industry, which is one of the most important drivers of the province’s economy,” Moody said. “There are several indications that we’re entering a period of positive growth and employment, but we’re also likely on the cusp of rising interest rates. The way these and other factors play out over the coming months will present many opportunities as well as challenges.”
