MF Series Melting Furnaces Melting Furnaces are great for melters who are on a commercial or hobbyist level of experience. This easy-to-operate machine can be used indoors, and is designed with a high temperature ceramic chamber for long-lasting casting abilities! These units are available in 1 Kg, 2 Kg and 3 Kg sizes, as well as 110 Volt US Standard or 220 Volt European Style power for all of your melting needs! torches Torches are an affordable and easy way to melt down your gold and other precious metals, as well as performing other hobbies and tasks such as: soldering, brazing, welding, and even jewelry repair! It is important to educate yourself before melting your own material. There are many safety hazards and variables when using an open flame torch and safety should always come first. Make sure you have the proper safety equipment and have a good idea of the process before you begin. Using a torch method, you first place your material into a graphite or ceramic crucible. The crucible should be placed on a fireproof surface and then the torch is used to apply heat and ultimately melt your material. We offer handheld torches in a variety of different types of gases including Propane, Butane and Acetylene.

Tips on Torches Acetylene is the chemical compound with the formula C2H2. It is a hydrocarbon and the most simple alkyne. This colorless gas is widely used as either a fuel or a chemical building block, and burns at the hottest temperature for oxygen-fuel cutting and welding. If you want to weld occasionally with your torch set up, then this is the fuel to consider for your setup. It burns hot enough that metals can be effectively joined together. However, acetylene tends to be expensive and unstable as a fuel. If you’re only cutting metal, acetylene will preheat the metal quickly, but it is not necessarily the only cutting fuel option. The equipment for acetylene is somewhat similar to that of propane. However, the parts in the regulators need to be set up for acetylene, and the hoses coming from the regulators are different due to the chemical composition of the different gasses. The torch tips are also different because of the differences in the fuels and the burning temperatures they burn at when mixed with oxygen. Acetylene is capable of producing a flame that is about 6000°F or higher. Propane is a combustible fuel consisting of three carbon atoms and eight hydrogen atoms. Typically obtained in small cylinders, it is used for a variety of applications, including cooking and heating. The maximum flame temperature that can be obtained with propane gas is 3595°F (1979°C). This is hot enough to heat a crucible and melt gold which makes it a reliable gas for the torch method. Butane is an organic compound with the formula C4H10, an alkane with four carbon atoms. It is a highly flammable, colorless, odorless, easily liquefied gas. Consumer air butane torches are often claimed to develop flame temperatures up to approximately 1,°C; 2600 °F. casting fluxes You will most likely need a casting flux during your melting process. A “flux” is a substance or chemical agent often used in metallurgy as a purifying agent. We sell several types of flux including Anhydrous Borax, Boric Acid and Hank Chapman’s Flux. Flux is used for deoxidizing, seasoning crucibles, keeping your material liquefied, and to help refine your materials by drawing out impurities! These components can be used individually depending on your needs or to make your own specific flux recipe. Testing Gold Items (10k, 14k, 18k, 22k) 1. Scratch or rub the metal you are testing onto the stone, hard enough to make a visible streak or mark on the stone. You may also shave the metal, and use the shavings to test onto the stone. 2. Place half a drop of the closest testing acid to the karat you estimate the gold to be, onto the gold that rubbed off onto the testing stone. 3. If the acid dissolves the metal, the metal is less than the karat displayed on the acid bottle - try again with a lower level acid. 4. If the metal does not dissolve, it is at least the karat of the acid on the bottle.
