he rich history and heritage of our towns and villages has been showcased in many ways as part of our region’s bicentenary celebrations during the past year.

I GOT INVOLVED BECAUSE I WANTED TO BE A VOICE IN THE PLANNING PROCESS FOR KENDALL AND KEW’S FUTURE

“We moved from Sydney to a 17-acre property in Kendall when I was in primary school. Dad and his brother built our house, which is still my parent's residence today,” Rebecca said.

“My brother and I grew up surrounded by beautiful country, horses, motorbikes, fresh waterholes, creeks and good-hearted community people. gg

Bonny Hills was the first community Council partnered with to develop a draft Community Plan. In the next two years, community plans will be developed for a total of 18 communities right across the region.

Rebecca Coman, and father Michael

have enthusiastically embraced the community planning concept, and are helping design the future vision for the Kew, Kendall, Herons Creek and Lorne area.

Having moved here in 1995, when they heard they could contribute to what their place may look like in 20 years’ time, the Coman’s jumped at the chance to get involved, contribute and have their say.

This new approach to planning for tomorrow aims to better align community projects and expectations with Council processes and budgets, so that communities can grow and prosper whilst maintaining their uniqueness, character and liveability.

Engagement has commenced on the North Shore, in the Camden Haven, Comboyne and Byabarra, the Thrumster area and Kew/ Kendall… we will be coming to your community to develop a plan, so keep an eye out for when it’s your turn.

The next chapter in our region’s future looks bright, with many residents working in partnership with Council on a new Community Planning approach to develop a vision for their town, village and community, helping to shape and create what their local area might look like in the future.

We’ve looked at our place through many different lenses, reflected on our past, and pondered at what life might have been like… 200 years ago. And as we fast forward to today, it’s staggering to see how much our region has grown and changed.

“I got involved because I wanted to be a voice in the planning process for Kendall and Kew’s future. Our residents love the area, and of course other people are going to want to move and live here too. I wanted to be informed, be involved and assist Council shaping the future of our area,” Rebecca explained. Cont. overleaf

Delivering for our growing community

From the Mayor

W

elcome to the summer edition of the Community Now Newsletter... and welcome to 2019. I hope you all had an enjoyable festive season, and like me, had the opportunity to catch up with family and friends, wind down a little and reflect on what was a busy ‘20 greateen’. 2019 promises to be just as busy, with lots of exciting things happening in our growing community, and a number of exciting projects moving forward. This includes the upgrade to the Port Macquarie Airport Terminal building, continued upgrades to Bago Road, pedestrian improvements in Laurieton, and of course continued community engagement on the proposed Orbital Road... just to name a few. I don’t know if it’s just me, but there seems to be a real positive vibe in the air and I’m really looking forward to continuing to work closely with our community, and as always encourage you to get involved in Council happenings and have your say. This is our community, and just like the Coman family in our community planning story, there is no better time than now to contribute to shaping what our future communities might look like. We can only do this together, and I’m really looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible involved. Enjoy your Community Now newsletter.

WRITING OUR COMMUNITY’S FUTURE Council is encouraging as many of our community as possible to get involved in community planning. Young, old and everyone in between all need to contribute to ensure we are building a vision for all generations. “Collaborating with Council directly gives residents a voice and opinion in the planning, development and management of Kendall and Kew’s future. After all, we live here and know the area well,” Rebecca added. “I have enjoyed the process so far, and have had plenty of opportunities to share my thoughts and ideas for the future of the area I call home.”
