MASSIVE OWL / DIRTY HALF DOZEN

Friday 13 June, 7.00-9.30pm

Part one: Massive Owl

What people say about Massive Owl

A double-bill featuring performances from Bristol-based production company Massive Owl and The Dirty Half Dozen, a production company set up by finalyear students from the University of Salford.

This is your chance to catch the company’s highly-acclaimed new show We Used to Wait as it continues its UK tour. As is typical of Massive Owl, We Used to Wait is a highly energetic ensemble performance that pulls the audience into the heart of work.

“They have developed a very distinctive style that is mature and highly skilled, and demonstrates an exceptional understanding of ensemble performance. The performance work they create sits somewhere between physical theatre and live art, with their ability to ‘story-tell’ through the most minimal of means making their work both complex and accessible.”

Over 50 fast-moving minutes, the show will challenge you to explore what it means to be ‘live’ and present together in an increasingly digital world. Audience members will sit in a square, side-by-side with the performers, and asked to question why falling asleep on a stranger’s shoulder or playing a spontaneous game might be important

Kate Craddock, Festival Director, Gateshead International Festival of Theatre (GIFT)

Entry: FREE. Book your tickets online at: www.bit.ly/1tq3E20 Venue: Digital Performance Lab, MediaCityUK, University of Salford campus, M50 2HE

Part two: The Dirty Half Dozen Dirt to Dodge by The Dirty Half Dozen is an inventive homage to the spaghetti western Italian filmmaking master, Sergio Leone. The performance explores the translation of a spaghetti western from screen to stage taking audiences on a journey through the Wild West; featuring gun fights, bank robberies, saloon bar brawls and sassy dames.

BILLY, THE MONSTER AND ME!

Saturday 14 June, 11.00am–12.00pm An award-winning family-friendly production written by two Salford graduates. Suitable for children aged 3+. Entry: FREE (arrive early to avoid disappointment) Venue: Digital Performance Lab, MediaCityUK, University of Salford campus, M50 2HE

Winner of the 24:7 Festival 2013 award for ‘Audience-Voted Best Production’ – and fresh from a national tour that included a performance at The Lowry – Billy, The Monster And Me was written by Salford graduates Sarah Birch and Catherine Manford; mums to several fearless monster slayers of their own.

Reviews “Billy, The Monster And Me is so successful, the producers ought to be put in charge of sorting out the economy. The play succeeds in entertaining – actually entrancing – the most difficult audience of all: very young children.” What’s On Stage

The performance, which encourages audience participation, follows 8-year-old Billy’s adventures after the eponymous Monster arrives in his bedroom “on the very day that his family is just too busy to take any notice of him”. Along the way, you’ll meet Billy’s hero, his ancient and rather sleepy granddad, his grumpy older sister and, of course, the nasty monster itself.

Prepare to be enchanted by a spinetingling modern fairy tale, inspired by the 2009 stop-motion film – a favourite with adults and children alike. The production, which includes elements of shadow puppetry and black-light theatre, follows the adventures of a young girl, bored sick of her new home and her workaholic parents until she stumbles upon a magical door that leads to her perfect life.

Reviews of Scallywags’ production of A Very, Very, Very Sleepy Princess “There were some lovely performances and nice little moments.” Three Weeks

“The whole thing has lightness of touch that is quite charming; none of the scenes are laboured and the costume changes and beautifully decorated scenery mean that there is always something to look at.” BroadwayBaby

Coraline has been specially produced for Create Salford 2014 by the Scallywags Children’s Theatre Company. It features performances and direction from students on the University’s undergraduate performance degree.
