Jonathan outlaws Boko Haram By Stanley Onyekwere

resident Goodluck Jonathan has formally approved the proscription of the Boko Haram group. He also authorized the gazetting of an order declaring the group’s activities illegal and acts of terrorism. The order has been gazetted as the Terrorism (Prevention) (Proscription Order) Notice 2013. It affects both Boko Haram (Jamaatu Ahlis-Sunna Liddaawati Wal Jihad) and another group – Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan. This was approved by President Jonathan pursuant to section 2 0f the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2011 (As Amended). A statement by the Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity), Dr. Reuben Abati, explained yesterday that the document officially brings the activities of both groups within the purview of the Terrorism Prevention Act. Accordingly, any persons associated with the two groups can now be legally prosecuted and sentenced to penalties specified in the Act. According to the statement, “the proscription order warns the general public that any person participating in any form of activities involving or concerning the collective intentions of the said groups will be violating the provisions of the Terrorism Prevention Act. “Section 5 (1) of the act prescribes a term of imprisonment of not less than 20 years for any person who Contd. on Page 2

Gunmen kill Sokoto lawmaker From Mahmoud Muhammad, Sokoto

ome gunmen on Monday evening killed the Chairman, House Committee on Finance of the Sokoto state House of Assembly, Hon. Murtala Dahiru Wauru. Eyewitness accounts said
the incident occurred at about 9 pm at the deceased’s Minnata area residence, in central Sokoto metropolis. Reports said that the gunmen, riding on a motorcycle, shot the PDP lawmaker at close range. They later made away with his Peugeot 406 ash-colour car, after confirming him dead.
Spokesman of the Sokoto State Police Command, ASP Almustapha Sani, confirmed the incident yesterday noting that men of the CIB had launched an investigation into the matter. The deceased lawmaker has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
When our correspondent visited his residence yesterday, several sympathizers were there to condole with the family. Governor Aliyu Wamakko who expressed shock over the killing described the deceased as man of peace who was committed to development of the state and the country at large.
