he Nigerian Government has criticised the sacking of the democratically elected
Egyptian President, Mohammed Mursi, by the Egyptian Armed Forces and the suspension of the country’s Constitution. The Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in a statement yesterday described the situation in Egypt as an “unfortunate development” which was a gross violation of the constitutive act of the African Union
(AU). The statement said the military intervention in Egypt was a “serious setback” for the remarkable progress which Africa

T
he House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, yesterday submitted its report, urging the House to consider granting autonomy to local governments and allow independent candidacy in future elections. The Committee also seeks to bar unelected local government chairmen from getting funding from government account. The House Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha, who is also Chairman of the Ad hoc Committee briefed the House at the plenary and gave highlights of the alterations contained in the Bill. According to him, the Committee followed from the recommendation of the people’s public sessions which clearly underscored the need to create independence and autonomy for local government councils and give them their deserved role as catalysts for Contd. on Page 2
