2015: Govs endorse opposition merger ...say PDP rule not good for democracy APGA, ANPP inclusion stalls talks From Ayodele Samuel, Lagos & Ikechukwu Okaforadi, Abuja

A

bout 10 governors from opposition political parties involved in the ongoing merger talks for a mega party rose from a closed meeting in Lagos yesterday with a resolve to flush out the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015. The governors who affirmed their support for the merger plans regretted what they described as the rampaging one-party system in the country as represented by the PDP. “It is not good for the nation’s hard earned democracy,” the governors noted. In a swift reaction, the PDP described the meeting of the opposition political parties as a “welcome development.” Addressing journalists after the Contd on Page 2

Again, Amnesty accuses police of extra-judicial killings

A

mnesty International has accused the Nigerian Police of extra-judicial killings in parts of the country, urging the federal and states governments to investigate such deaths and carry out proper autopsies. The group in a report released yesterday lamented that hundreds of fatal police shootings each year leave families anguished and bereaved without

investigation and attributed the development to what it described as failure of the Nigerian justice system. In the report tagged, “Nigeria: No Justice for the Dead,” Amnesty said that inquiries it carried out in Rivers state illustrate the gaps in the investigation of deaths following police action where basic techniques of crime scene protection and investigation are not applied and autopsies and

inquests are either not carried out or are inadequate. “The lack of investigation in Nigeria means that many of the police officers who appear to have used unlawful lethal force enjoy impunity, seriously undermining human rights protections,” said Lucy Freeman, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Africa. According to the report,

“many of the victims killed by the police each year may have been unlawfully killed in what constitutes extra-judicial executions. “Relatives are often left with no answers about the fate of their family members and rarely receive justice. “Amnesty International believes Rivers state is representative of other Nigerian Contd on Page 2
