15 perish as tanker, bus crash in Ogbomoso From Inumidun Ojelade, Ibadan

N

o fewer than 15 persons died in a multiple auto crash on Ogbomoso-OyoIbadan road yesterday afternoon. According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred when a tanker loaded with petrol, coming

from the Oyo/Ibadan end, ran over an 18-seater commercial bus coming from Ilorin/Ogbomoso, at a sharp bend near Odo-Oba village – five kilometers to Ogbomoso town. The crash happened at a spot where another tanker loaded with petrol had broken down for the past one week.

It was gathered that the impact of the collision caused the tanker to overturn, spilling its content which exploded in flames immediately. The driver of the bus, the eyewitness added, lost control of the vehicle and some occupants were flung out. Only three people escaped

from the bus while the crash caused a long traffic snarl on the Ibadan/Ogbomoso/Oyo highway. It took men of the fire service sometime to mobilise to the scene while men of the Nigerian Army and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were on hand

to offer rescue assistance and to ensure that the property of the victims were not tampered with. The spokesman of NEMA in the South-west, Alhaji Ibrahim Farinloye, said that the scene had to be cordoned off while traffic was diverted to alternative routes.

Terrorism: Nigeria deports 16,000 aliens By Richard Ihediwa

T

he Federal Government has so far repatriated a total of 16,000 aliens even as it says it has discovered 1,497 illegal border points used for unauthorized movement in and out of the country. Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, stated this at the weekend while giving a review of the government’s effort at stemming the tide of the activities of terror groups. He said the strategy adopted by the government has been yielding the desired result, leading to the repatriations and the discovery of the routes used by the terror groups that have been ravaging some parts of the country. The minister, however, linked part of the problem to the abuse of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocol that allows free movement of citizens within the West African sub-region. The abuse of the protocol, he explained, forced Nigeria to take the drastic decision as it became obvious that foreign mercenaries were aiding insurgency in the country. Moro said, “Our major challenge, like I said, is the Contd on Page 2
