Speaker Tambuwal knocks Jonathan By Lawrence Olaoye

peaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, yesterday cautioned President Goodluck Jonathan against abuse of prerogative of mercy. The Speaker, in a veiled reference to the recent state pardon granted some former corrupt government officials, including the convicted former governor of Bayelsa state, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, and the former Managing Director of the Bank of the North, Alhaji Mohammed Bulama, amongst others by the President said corruption will continue to fester in the country unless government officials are able to properly apply the law of the land. Tambuwal gave the warning at a two-day National Conference on Corruption and National Security in Nigeria organized by the Institute for Anti-Corruption Studies, University of Abuja. According to him, “A situation whereby you misapply the law even to grant pardon or whatever it is, we need to really look at that; because if you don’t understand the law you may tend to misapply the law.” “So there is the need for us at the high places to increase our capacity of understanding our legal system, and the laws that relate to issues of security and fight against corruption for us to apply them in the best interest of the citizenry.” Contd on Page 2
