Yari makes U-turn, wants state police By Umar Muhammad Puma, Abuja & Ibrahim Sidi Muh’d, Gusau
G
overnor Abdulazeez Yari of Zamfara state yesterday backtracked from the resolution of the northern governors to oppose the creation of state police, saying its adoption is the only way out of the seeming obstinate security challenges across some states of the Federation. The governor’s latest position also shows he may backpedal on his earlier resolve to distribute firearms to members of some vigilante groups in Zamfara state to help curtain the incessant killings of innocent citizens of the state by armed bandits. Governor Yari’s resolve to arm the vigilantes in the fight against the bandits had generated widespread reactions, with most Nigerians warning on the dangers inherent in releasing firearms to vigilantes, who they say could be ‘political vanguards’ of the governor. The Zamfara governor’s pronouncement on the state police in a state radio programme yesterday, came just as the House of Representatives insisted that it would not consider the introduction of state police in its constitution

Yobe killings: JNI J calls for probe
From Mohammad Ibrahim, Kaduna
Amnesty Int’l seeks protection for students
ama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) yesterday urged the Federal Government to immediately institute a probe into the killing of students at Government Secondary School (GSS) Mamudo, few kilometers away from Potiskum, Yobe state, even as it described the killers as devilish criminals. This is just as Amnesty International has called on the government to act in order to
prevent attacks on schools to protect children’s lives and their right to education. The JNI in a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Dr Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, yesterday in Kaduna, said the sporadic gun shots that ensued after setting the school ablaze were very worrisome and called for practical investigation to forestall future occurrence. The Islamic body also urged the Federal Government to restore the use of GSM in Contd. on Page 2
