PDP crisis: Jonathan moves to save Tukur
…suspends BoT election to avert defeat
By Lawrence Olaoye and Abdulrahman Abdulraheem
P
resident Goodluck Jonathan yesterday moved to save the job of the National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, when he summoned the members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to a reconciliation meeting at the Villa. This is coming on the heels of speculations that the President
had to suspend the election scheduled to produce the new Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) on Tuesday when it was becoming clearer that his perceived candidate, Chief Tony Anenih, was on the verge of losing the contest to Chief Ahmadu Ali,
who has the backing of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. It was gathered that the suspension of the BoT meeting and the composition of the special committee headed by Prof. Jerry Gana was a ploy to avert defeat by the President.
However, wading into the PDP leadership crisis, Jonathan, at the meeting asked the NWC members to reconcile and work with Tukur in the interest of peace and progress of the party. The PDP NWC members are Contd on Page 2

The development has already sparked anger among administrators and ehnthusiastics with the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) seeing it as a bad omen for the nation’s football fortunes.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles is one of the 16 participating teams in the tournament holding in South Africa from January 19 to February 10. Nigeria is drawn in Group C alongside defending Contd on Page 2
