T
he Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arrested and quizzed former Governor of the Central Bank, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for several hours over allegations of bribery and fraud in the contract for the printing of polymer currency notes during his tenure. Soludo, who was picked in Abuja in the afternoon, was taken to the commission’s Abuja headquarters where he was kept until late evening when this report was filed.
Though, it was not immediately clear what Soludo was told, his name has been mentioned in several corruption reports, including his alleged involvement in bribery scandals on the production of the polymer notes which have proved to be substandard. The CBN under Soludo introduced the N50, N20, N10 and N5 polymer notes, promising that they would be durable and weather resistant, an assurance that has not stood the test of time as the notes fade and wear off rapidly. s part of effort to resolve the internal bickering threatening to tear apart the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday summoned governors of the party to a meeting in Abuja. However, the meeting at House 7 in the Presidential Villa which lasted three hours, failed to point the way forward. Following the failure to reach common ground
at yesterday's meeting, the governors resolved to continue the discussion at an undisclosed location in Abuja while President Jonathan returned to his office to attend to other state matters. However, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, who was detailed to speak with State House correspondents, noted that the president invited the governors to the meeting to look into issues as leaders of the country.
