Cardinal Arinze tipped, as Pope Benedict resigns By Etuka Sunday, with agency reports
F
ollowing the announcement made by the Catholic pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI yesterday of his intention to resign as the Head of the Catholic Church on February 28 this year, due to his advanced age, Cardinal
Francis Arinze of Nigeria has been tipped by bookmakers as the most likely candidate to succeed the Pope. Arinze had lost out in a bid to be named Pope in 2005. Arinze who is now 80 years old was tipped ahead of Peter Turkson of Ghana and Marc Ouellet of Canada as the favourite to take
over the mantle of leadership from Pope Benedict XVI who was elected in 2005 by the Vatican's College of Cardinals. According to William Hill bookmakers “during the 2005 conclave of the Vatican's College of Cardinals that elected Benedict, Arinze was considered “papabile,” or a potential successor to the late
John Paul II. and Peace who are considered as progressive candidates, are among 18 Africans in the Vatican's College of Cardinals qualified to vote and be voted for in the forthcoming papacy election. In a statement, Pope Benedict XVI who became the 265th Pope Contd on Page 2
