Jega to shuffle directors as INEC restructures By Richard Ihediwa, with agency report
T
here is fear and anxiety at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the leadership of the commission under Prof. Attahiru Jega has concluded arrangements to restructure the commission in apparent preparations for the 2015 elections. Though Jega, who announced the planned restructuring in Abuja yesterday, stated that it might not necessarily mean sacking of workers, sources at the INEC headquarters hinted that some directors at the headquarters may have to lose their positions. The leadership of the commission, it was gathered has compiled a list of poor performing directors who would be moved to
the states to man certain departments while younger and more brilliant field officers in the states who recently passed their promotion examinations are to be brought to the headquarters. It was learnt that the list of those to be sent packing to states where mostly from departments having two or more directors with some of them being redundant and unproductive. Many of them were said to have been brought in during the past administration under Prof. Maurice Iwu and have spent several years without meaningful contributions to the commission. The new management is said to be uncomfortable with the sea of unproductive officials at the commission and has decided to put them into use at the states. "I can tell you that there will

be surprises at INEC very soon. Many of the directors are going to lose their positions. There are some offices where we have two or more directors and many of them are not doing anything. Many of them came during the Iwu dispensation They have become dead wood so to say because they cannot cope with the demands of those offices under the current dispensation. "So such people will be moved to the states. Some offices have been opened for them there. There are some vibrant young officials in the states who have been penciled down to come to Abuja to replace them", he source who pleaded anonymity stated. Gunmen on rampage in Gombe, Damaturu

nknown gunmen attacked a Catholic Church killing one and injuring a policeman in Kanawa area of Gombe metropolis yesterday. Similarly, another gang of gunmen engaged policemen in a gun duel in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, also yesterday. The Gombe state Police Commissioner Alhaji Ibrahim Abdu, confirmed the incident to Peoples Daily on phone yesterday, saying there was an attack on a Catholic Church in Gombe. Evangelist Musa Misale who is the chairman, Christian Youth Association of Nigeria, North East zone, told newsmen in Gombe that the gunmen who were five in number had come with the intention of attacking the church but the presence of security men made it impossible for them to gain access to the church, no member of the church was injured or assaulted. “They only attacked the security personnel who tried to stop Contd on Page 2
