Politicians fuel religious crisis in North, by Sultan
Cardinal Onaiyekan sues for tolerance From Nasiru Mu’azu Isa
T
he Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has said that politicians are blowing out of proportion the religious problem in the North because they have contributed to it. He recalls that several politicians have been arrested in connection with different crimes
in the country but so far nothing has come out of those arrests. The Sultan made those remarks yesterday during meeting of the Northern Governors’ Peace and Reconciliation Committee at State House, Kaduna. He said royal and religious fathers, both Christian and Muslim, have been involved in
talks in a bid to find a lasting solution to the nation’s security challenges. Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar called on the committee to prove naysayers wrong by coming up with recommendations that will not only be implemented by government but also religious and traditional rulers. He observed that the issues of
security and development were no longer issues affecting ordinary people only but everyone including the leaders. The committee has been going round all the Northern states to engage stakeholders in discussing issues of peace, reconciliation and security in the region. The royal father said as fathers of the country, both
traditional and religious leaders have played their part and done a lot through the different recommendations of committees and investigative panels they sat on. He said in the past they presented to both federal and state governments recommendations on the way forward but nothing Contd on Page 2
Senate insists on sanctions against Oteh, Maina
…Washes hands off 2013 budget delay By Richard Ihediwa
F
or the embattled Director General of the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ms. Aruma Oteh and Chairman of the Presidential Pension Reform Team (PPRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina, trouble is far from over as the Senate yesterday said they must be sanctioned for alleged official misconduct. Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Enyinnya Abaribe, told newsmen yesterday in Abuja that there would be no going back on the National Assembly resolution on zero vote for SEC in the 2013 fiscal estimates unless the SEC boss is removed from office. This is just as it has washed its hands off the delay in the signing of the 2013 budget, saying it has done its duty by passing the budget as early last month.
