FRONT PAGE COMMENT
Dragging Nigeria to the abyss
F
or quite some time now, it has been a stream of unhappy news coming from Rivers state. If it is not the House of Assembly members quarrelling among themselves or making moves to impeach the state governor, or the security agencies openly defying the governor and undermining his authority, or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) disowning the governor and scheming with other forces to isolate him as a prelude to getting him removed, it is the
First Lady, Dame Patience, using the security forces to establish temporary control and ownership of the state. But of all the many disturbing spectacles from that state in recent times, none beats what happened there last Friday in the hallowed chambers and premises of the state’s House of Assembly. That day, in broad daylight and with every bit and step of the ugly scenes fully captured by television cameras, Nigeria and the rest of the world were treated
to what, by whatever standards viewed and measured, was a show of shame that turned the state into what many now call Rivers of Shame. The legislators engaged themselves in a free-for-all brawl, tearing into each other and hitting to kill, fighting fiercely to get control of the mace, destroying any and every equipment in their path, and generally behaving as if the Assembly was a mental asylum and they were its inmates. Northern elders to Jonathan
Nigeria sliding into anarchy From Muhammad Ibrahim and Femi Oyelola, Kaduna
P
rominent northern elders have expressed dismay over the alarming desperation of politicians scheming for vantage positions ahead of the electoral contests in 2015, saying Nigeria is sliding towards anarchy in a manner that has never been seen in the history of the country. The elders, who gave this warning yesterday in Kaduna comprise representatives of six distinctive groups in the North, including the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Code Group (CG), Arewa Reawakening Forum (ARF) and Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP). The elders lamented the uncontrolled abuse of power by the Presidency, alleging its involvement in various crises in the country owing to the ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan to retain power in 2015.
