E
fforts by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reconcile aggrieved members of the party in the South-south region yesterday suffered a setback when the governors of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi and his Delta state counterpart, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, staged a walk out on the Civic Centre in Port Harcourt, venue of the Town Hall meeting while the Akwa Ibom state governor, Barrister Godswill Akpabio, was addressing the mammoth crowd. The walk-out may not be unconnected to the cold war between governors Amaechi and Akpabio over their political rivalry since the creation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors' Forum being chaired by the Akwa-Ibom state governor. Trouble started when the Delta state governor, in his address, urged the party's National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to prevail on other PDP members not to dwell solely on infrastructural developments alone in their states while the people whom they are supposed to govern wallow in wants and depravity. T
he ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the weekend won all but one of the Area Councils polls
held in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).Kuje, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari and Kwali areas of the FCT were swept by PDP, leaving only Gwagwalada Area council to the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
In the election which PDP contested with twelve opposition parties, including ANPP, ACN, CPC, UPP, among others, reports of low turnout of voters were widespread, in addition to late arrival of electoral materials, particularly in the satellite towns.
Peoples Daily gathered that in Abaji Area Council, the PDP won the chairmanship seat with a total vote of to 8,933 and six councillorships seats, while the ACN came close second with a total of 8101 votesand three councillorship seats. In Kuje, the Returning Officer of the FCT Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sunday Ejaro, announced that Ishaku Shaban of the PDP won the Kuje Area Council with 16,800 Contd on Page 2
