Protesting NIMC staff storm NASS, barricade entrance By Ikechukwu Okaforadi
S

The protesters, numbering hundreds, stormed the complex at
about 8am, overwhelmed the security operatives and chanted different songs like "D.G. NIMC is the enemy of the masses". The protesters prevented journalists, legislative aides and the staff of the National Assembly from gaining entrance into the complex, demanding that the lawmakers must intervene in their plight. It would be recalled that the sacked NIMC staff had demonstrated in the past but their plight was not addressed, which
prompted them to stage a comeback to further press home their demands. The leader of the protesting staff, Ushe Fidelis, said they will sustain the protest, even after yesterday, adding that they will only rest if the lawmakers intervene and explain to them why the Director General of NIMC should be recruiting 18,600 new staff after sacking 4,600 of the existing staff of the commission. He lamented a situation where several investigative
inquiries into the issue in both chambers of the National Assembly failed to yield the desired result which is to recall the dismissed workers. Cars were barricaded from entering or leaving the assembly. The efforts made by the Divisional Police Officer of Asokoro to control the rowdy situation did not yield any meaningful result.
