Civil war goal of Kano bombing – Emir …It’s time for decisive action, says ACN From Edwin Olofu, Kano & Ayodele Samuel, Lagos

T

he Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, has reviewed the recent bombing of a bus park in Kano concluding that the perpetrators have the intention of sparking off a civil war in the country. The Emirs proclamation comes on the heels of warning from the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) that the attack signifies an impending doom which may overwhelm the entire nation. Although the police claimed that only 22 persons were killed when suicide bombers hit the Luxurious Bus motor park located at Sabon Gari in the Kano metropolis, independent reports indicated that no fewer than 70 persons lost their lives during the incident. Unemployment: Nigeria’ll explode soon, says Obasanjo From Olarewaju Lawal, Ilorin

F

ormer President Olusegun Obasanjo has said the country would soon be engulfed in violent upheavals due to what he described as the high level of unemployment. Obasanjo spoke yesterday in Ilorin where he delivered the

16th Annual Lecture of the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute in Ilorin, Kwara state. He attributed the prevailing violent and political instability as part factors which account for stagnation and slow growth of agriculture in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

Obasanjo noted that the number of universities in Nigeria has risen to about 150, describing it as a huge problem because the students graduate without prospects of jobs. “This means we are sitting on a keg of gun powder because an idle mind is the devil’s workshop and a hopeless idle hand is

tinder’s box,” Obasanjo warned. According to him, “”the implications of this dilemma are huge, with roughly 60 per cent region’s labour and 90 per cent of the region’s poor currently working directly in agriculture, it is difficult to imagine how significant poverty reduction in Africa can occur without

increased productivity in agriculture. “Other factors like weak financial markets and rural finance institutions also contribute to poor agriculture growth. “Post-harvest grain losses in sub-Sahara Africa alone are Contd on Page 2
