12 killed as gunmen launch attacks in Borno From Mustapha Isah Kwaru, Maiduguri

N

o fewer than 12 persons were killed when unknown gunmen carried out multiple attacks and detonated improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in different parts of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, between Tuesday and yesterday. Two of the suspected assailants

were among the dead, after they were trailed and killed by operatives of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF). The latest spate of violence came 24 hours after another group of gunmen stormed a local market in Damboa town, the administrative headquarters of Damboa local government area and killed 18 hunters. The identity of the deceased who reportedly died on the spot due to excessive bleeding could not be ascertained as at press time. Later in the day, a heavy explosion was heard in several areas of Maiduguri metropolis, when an improvised explosive

device went off in Kalari Ward. The blast was followed by a gun battle between some insurgents and JTF personnel which lasted for over an hour. Although the number of casualties recorded on both sides was not clear, the incident led to the total disruption of business and social activities in the areas with major roads being deserted. A stampede also broke out as vehicular and pedestrian

movements were also suspended as dozens of soldiers in patrol vehicles, backed by armuored tanks cordoned the entire neighborhood, forcing residents to stay indoors. Also yesterday, another group of gunmen invaded Jiddari Polo Ward and slaughtered five persons. The incident occurred at about 3.am when the assailants allegedly Contd on Page 2
