s scathing criticisms of the pardon granted to former governor of Bayelsa state, Diepreye Peters Alamieyeseigha, by President Goodluck Jonathan continues, fresh facts have
emerged that the controversial move was actually planned for last year but was strongly opposed by members of the National Council of state (NCS). The Jonathan administration has in past weeks endured intense outrage both from the local and
international community for granting state pardon to his former boss. Jonathan was deputy governor under Alamieyeseigha. An authoritative source conversant with buildup to the pardon informed Peoples Daily that the President toyed with the
idea last year but dropped it on sensing the disgust of the council members towards it. According to the source who witnessed the entire drama leading to clemency for the former governor, Jonathan actually suggested pardon a year ago, an
idea which was rejected by members of the NCS. The source said: "The President wanted clemency for Alamieyeseigha last year but that bid was not welcome by some members of the council of state. Contd on Page 2

ndications are strong that President Goodluck Jonathan has turned the nation’s apex seat of power into the unofficial secretariat of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This is owing to the

its meetings are usually held in the Presidential Villa. The practice which started during the tenure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo continued through the administration of late President Umaru Yar’Adua,
