Power: Jonathan is not in touch with reality - ANPP By Umar Muhammad Puma
T
he All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has condemned President Jonathan’s assertion on power generation in the country during an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Wednesday. "The assertion on power patently shows that either he is not properly briefed, or he is not in touch with the reality on ground in the country".
In a statement issued by the national Publicity Secretary Emma Eneukwu, the party said "This was an obvious deflated ego trip, effectively shot down by the fact that stable power supply still remains a mirage in our great nation, and could not be ameliorated even by any contrived public relations mileage that could be garnered via a world renowned media channel like the CNN". Stressing that "officially, Nigeria’s power generation has
dropped from its December 2012 figure of 4,502 megawatts to 4,286 megawatts, though there are suggestions from various informed quarters that the actual generation is 3,700 megawatts. In fact, we make bold to aver that most of the Nigerian citizens are not feeling the impact of any increase in power generation, and the figures bandied around by the PDP-led Government does not have any impact on the lives of the ordinary citizen".
Recall last week, President Jonathan When questioned by CNN about his promise three years ago to ensure stable power supply in the country, he answered that his government had recorded success and pointed out that every Nigerian, even the civil society groups, were happy about power generation, and could readily attest to the commitment of his government to stabilize power supply in the country. How we squandered $67bn reserves, by Maku By Abdulrahman Abdulraheem
T
he Federal Government yesterday denied allegations credited to Mrs. Obiageli Ezekewesili that the regimes of late Umar Musa Yara'dua and Goodluck Jonathan had squandered $67 billion reserves in the last six years. The former World Bank Vice President had at the University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka convocation ceremony held on January 24, 2013 alleged that President Goodluck Jonathan and his predecessor had lavished a whooping $67 billion left in the reserves (including $45 billion in external reserves and $22 billion in the Excess Crude Account) by President Olusegun Obasanjo. The Federal Government has however said the statement was lacking in credible facts and accused Ezekwesili of displaying poor understanding of government finances even though she once held a top position in the Federal Government. Speaking in a media briefing yesterday, Minister of Information, Labaran Maku noted: "The statement by the former World Bank Vice President that the governments of Presidents Umaru Musa Yar’adua and Contd on Page 2
