welcome FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Pensacola Citizen: Your Parks and Recreation Department is back with another recreation program guide for the upcoming months of April through August. Inside, you will find programs for all age groups including some terrific summer day camps and sports camps. If you have children between the ages of 5 and 14 years of age who need organized supervision during the summer months, take a good look at these camps. Most of them are offered Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On a final note, please know that your City Parks and Recreation Department is committed to providing quality programs and services to the citizens of Pensacola. CITY OF PENSACOLA SUMMER SCHEDULE YOUTH PROGRAMS PRE-SCHOOL CLASSES Wide World of Sports – Toddler Class Date: Tuesdays, April-June Time: 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Ages: 3-4 years old Location: Vickrey Community Center Costs: City $35/6-week session; Non-City $40/6-week session Your child will be introduced to the “wide world of sports,” playing a different sport each week in this 6-week class! Children will begin to learn the fundamentals of soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, and more. Parent Participation is required. For more information, call 912-4056. Start Smart Soccer Date: Thursdays, April-June Time: 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Ages: 3-4 years old Location: Vickrey Community Center Costs: City $50/6-week session; Non-City $60/6-week session Registration will be April. Start Smart Soccer prepares children and their parents for organized soccer without the stress of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Age appropriate equipment is used in teaching. The focus is on exploration! This special series of “My Firsts” includes collage, 3D art, hand printing, acrylic paintings, beginning paper cutting, and musical art. The activities are designed to provide opportunities for the Twoosys to touch, feel, hear, see, and explore while building fine motor skills, language, creativity, and cognitive skills. 5 Art in the Afternoon Classes Date: Thursdays, August 26, 2010May 19, 2011 Time: 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Ages: 5-12 years old Location: Gull Point Community Center Cost: City $10/per weekly class; Non-city $10/per weekly class Art in the afternoons is a place where young artists will learn that art can be decorative, functional and emotional, transcending boundaries of time and place, and that it is a reflection of the ideals and cultures. Students learn about the seven principles of art and seven elements of art and how to use them effectively. Classes are pay as you go and there is no pre-registration required. At the City of Pensacola, we strive to offer a variety of activities that include scheduled “fitness” time every day. While the kids may not be learning dance steps or Martial arts moves, they will be encouraged to participate in an activity that involves a level of physical activity. If we play hide and go seek, they’ll be running around; if we play Simon says, they’ll be stretching and moving in place. Educational activities coupled with art and physical games prove we are a well rounded after school program. Shotokan Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 1-29 Time: 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Ages: 8 years old and up Location: Vickrey Community Center Cost: City $35/month; Non-city $45/month Shotokan is a style of karate, developed from various Martial Arts. Shotokan training is usually divided into three parts: kihon (basics), kata (forms or patterns of moves), and kumite (sparring). Students will learn these techniques along with the principles allude to notions of humility, respect, compassion, patience, and both an inward and outward calmness. ADULT PROGRAMS VARIOUS CLASSES Watercolors with Madeleine Burke-Fanning Date: Wednesdays, April 7-April 28 Time: 10:00 a.m. Ages: 18 and up Location: Vickrey Community Center Cost: $50/monthly Madeleine offers instruction in watercolor technique, composition, design, and color. She also offers students the opportunity to develop an individual style, and explore the use of texture and composition, and offers instruction in experimental and mixed media. TAG MOVIE NIGHTS Date: Thursdays, June 10, and July 8, and August 12 Time: 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Ages: 12-15 years Location: Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Community Center Cost: City $5; Non-city $7 Another TAG (Teen Activity Group) event for teens only! Come watch Teen favorites, new releases and old standards, at Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Community Center. These events are for teenagers only and will cater to teenage sensibilities. Admission includes the movie, snacks, and a drink. Teenagers are invited to come in groups to socialize. The event will be completely supervised. Once a teen has been checked in at the front desk, they will not be allowed to leave until checked out by a parent or guardian. For more information, call 436-5198.

Collage and Assemblage Art Date: Tuesdays, June 1-June 29; August 10-September 7 Time: 6:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. Ages: All adults (15- to 17-year-olds with parents’ permission) Location: Sanders Beach Corinne Jones Community Center Cost: $75/5 weeks (materials included) In the class, you will use found objects and materials provided by the course fee to make original art works. The instructor will share knowledge of collage techniques with in-class demonstrations and studio instruction. The curriculum will also look at the work of a renowned collage artist during each class session and take from them ideas and concepts to relate to our practice. We will look at techniques including transfer methods, adhesive methods, permanent and non-permanent adhesives, use of materials, form, and composition, generation of materials, critical context, and formal concepts. Bayview Park Spring Flea Market Date: First Saturday of every month from April-September Time: 9:00 a.m.-noon Ages: All ages Location: Bayview Park Cost: Free to the public. Friday Family Flicks Friday Family Flicks … series of free outdoor family-friendly movies held at Commendencia Slip Pier running May to August. Every third Friday, the Community Redevelopment Agency will host movies on a 3-story inflatable screen. Plaza de Luna, the City of Pensacola waterfront park located at the southern end of Palafox Street on Pensacola Bay. The sun sets every evening, but each Thursday, Plaza de Luna is THE place to enjoy some live entertainment beginning at 5:30 p.m. while you enjoy the setting sun. Drop by after work, before enjoying dinner downtown or bring the kids for the best view in town. Each Thursday event will include a variety of professional and amateur musicians and performers. What’s New In Your Parks Sanders Beach Park and Sanders Beach

With the completion of the Sanders Beach — Corinne Jones Community Center, the Sanders Beach Park is undergoing a number of improvements as well. Along with additional sidewalks an irrigation system will be installed and new grass planted. A new restroom facility is currently under construction for use by park visitors and people using the boat ramp area. In addition, a new playground has been installed and is now open for play by children of all ages. Stop by and visit the park today!

ROGER SCOTT SWIMMING POOL

The Roger Scott Swimming Pool is currently under construction. The diving tank is being prepared to be filled in, and the upper part of the south tank wall has been ripped out so the zero depth entryway can be constructed. The water spray features for the tot pool, the zero depth entry pool and the large three tunnel waterslide have been ordered. With all the construction now underway, the contractor has 90 calendar days to finish this project and is projected to be completed sometime in late June or early July. We can’t wait to see everyone there this Summer!
