Object 1

The CMI/World Bank International Labor Mobility Program convened a roundtable in early November to launch its new initiative, LINC-UP (Labor Integration Network of Cities and Urban Planners). Scholars, practitioners, and municipal leaders discussed current challenges facing migrant destination cities, as well as emerging strategies to foster political, social, and labor market integration. This event was the first of a series of consultations taking place as preparation for a forthcoming report on urban migrant integration policy development, sponsored by the CMI, the World Bank, the Ryerson Maytree Global Diversity Exchange, the Bertelsmann Foundation and others. Stay tuned as this discussion incorporates the voices of more researchers, policymakers, and local activists working to advance migrant integration in urban environments! • Sandra Hassan's blog • Add new comment • Read more

Two Scenarios for a Hotter and Drier Arab World —And What We Can Do About It • Sustainable Growth

By Maria Sarraf If you think the summers in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are hot—think again. Summers are likely to become much warmer. Global temperatures are rising; the question now is by how much and what the impact of them will be. People in the region already face very high summer temperatures —and these could get worse. Compared to the rest of the world, the MENA region will suffer disproportionally from extreme heat. • Sandra Hassan's blog • Add new comment • Read more

Against a Backdrop of Upheaval in Relations between both Sides of the Mediterranean: Tourism, Now More than Ever, Acts as a Driver of Integration, Closer Relations, Growth, Job Creation, and Environmental Protection • Integrated Economies

By Agnès Levallois* The desire to discuss tourism at the workshop organized jointly by the Provence Alpes-Côte-d'Azur Region and the Center for Mediterranean Integration could, at first glance, seem surprising, if not out of place, in view of the situation in several southern Mediterranean countries. However, nothing could be further from the truth! The discussions revealed that against a backdrop of upheaval and changing relations between both sides of the Mediterranean, it is even more critical to invest in this integrative activity that forges connections, promotes growth, and creates jobs while, of course, protecting the environment. • • • •

Bringing Hope to Tunisia - The Path to Recovery • Integrated Economies By Elyès Jouini*

The Tunisian economy is currently in very bad shape. An economic policy focused on rent-seeking for the benefit of a minority with cozy ties to the political power has replaced a consumption-driven economic policy, based on short-term concerns. The social situation is worrisome given that discontent is growing. The time has come to think about/establish to a new economic policy framework. • • • •

Tourism and Upheaval in the Southern Mediterranean Countries • Integrated Economies

By Agnes Levallois* What is most important is the awareness that the model in place thus far belongs to a bygone era and that tourist demand for socially responsible experiences should be taken into account. Changing the tourist experience requires a medium- and long-term vision and the preparation of development plans by new actors, and acceptance of these plans by the people so that they can reap the resulting benefits. • • • •
