DIVISION 21 | PNW
Hello Division 21 Bumblebees! I am Selina Nguyen, currently a junior at Lynnwood High School. I am so excited and blessed to be your 2014 – 2015 Lieutenant Governor of Division 21! I have been a dedicated Key Club member for 2 years now, the first year as a member and the second year as a President. It has truly been an amazing 2 years so far and I can’t wait to continue my Key Club experience with all of you this upcoming year! Thank you to everyone who went to DCON 2014! The bumblebee spirit was phenomenal! Even though we didn’t win the spirit stick, all of you still managed to scream and cheer until your voices gave out! Division 21, our division is oh so wild! We’ll be back for it next year! I hope all of you were able to gain new valuable information that you will bring back to your own clubs! Whether its new friends, new service ideas or just a renewed passion for service, I hope that you were able to cherish the time you had with other Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest District and were able to experience what it’s like to be a true member of the greatest, oldest, largest and most successful high school service organization in the world! One of the main goals that I have for this upcoming year is to bridge the gap between the division and club. I don’t want to be a resource but THE resource for all the clubs in our division. As Lieutenant Governor of Division 21, I aim to inspire and motivate you all to develop a stronger passion for service. My hope is that you will cherish every moment you have with your fellow Division 21 members because the time that you have with everyone goes by very quickly! Underclassmen, how will you strengthen your passion for service? Upperclassmen, what do you want to be remembered for in the division? I am so thankful to get the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of individuals! Chester has done an amazing job with the division already and I only aim to continue on the legacy! I can’t wait to see all of you very soon! With Love & Service,
Selina Nguyen
PNW Lieutenant Governor of Division 21 Key Club

6 WELCOME TO CONVENTION, WE’RE REALLY GLAD YOU CAME! 65TH ANNUAL IS GONNA BE INSANE, WOO! DCON 2014 really was insane this year! For the first time ever, DCON 2014 was held at the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle! There was a grand total of 1,700 Key Clubbers from all over the Pacific Northwest District who attended this event! On Friday, members registered and attended Opening Session and caucusing. Opening Session Friday evening was a blast! Divisions demonstrated their spirit on a whole new level this year! Many people screamed and cheered until their voices gave out just to claim the spirit stick for their division! From bam bams, glow sticks and light savers to new cheers, moving mascots and creative spirit gear, the convention was packed with Key Clubbers eager to “Level Up in Service”! PNW Key Club was fortunate enough to have Houston Kraft as the Keynote Speaker and Joseph Vincent for the special performance this year at DCON 2014! Houston Kraft opened up people’s eyes to what “love” is and why we should AGAPE more in our everyday lives. Joseph Vincent on the other hand, swept girls (and guys) off their feet with his mesmerizing voice! On Saturday, members participated in various informational workshops, the service fair, House of Delegates, the highly anticipated Governor’s Ball and the most emotional part of DCON, closing session! There were talent acts, awards, retirement of the 2013-2014 District Board and the installment of the 2014-2015 District Board. Congratulations Lynnwood Key Club for obtaining 3 awards & Kamiak Key Club for obtaining 1 award! You make Division 21 so proud! It’s amazing how much energy you don’t have after DCON… But in the end, it’s worth the sleepless nights! I can’t wait until DCON 2015! 357 days until DCON 2015! So after such a crazy & intense weekend… HOW DO YOU FEEL?!

“The key note speakers were amazing. The sessions were amazing. DCON is one of those experiences that make you review yourself and the service. It makes you refocus and refuel your service energy. Division 21, I agape you. <3” ~ Mary Meagher, Kamiak Key Club “It was so much fun this year! I loved that we were in the heart of Seattle and near EVERYTHING. We learned so much about how we can improve as a club and as individuals! I can't wait till DCON 2015!” ~ Brianna Ferguson, Snohomish Key Club “DCON was so much fun this year!!! From making new friends, to crazy spirit cheers, I had an unbelievably amazing time!! I can't wait till next year, or maybe even ICON! Shout out to my new bud Kyle Rogers, you're the best dude! #apple-sauce” ~ Kohta Hansen, Kamiak Key Club “DCON was one of the best weekends of my life! The "Mooove" cheer was by far my favorite one to do!” ~ Paul Salsa, Kamiak Key Club “Post DCON syndrome has definitely hit me hard this year; I can’t come close to explaining the love I’ve experienced. I can’t imagine my life without Key Club and I have so many people to thank for helping me create this amazing unforgettable experience!” ~ Heather Do, Lynnwood Key Club “I love our division. It was amazing, even though we didn't get the spirit stick, to be around so much spirit.” ~ Courtney Klein, Lake Stevens Key Club “DCON 2014 was my first DCON but I already love the atmosphere, the energy and really just how everyone is one big weird family. I’m so thankful to have gone to DCON and to be a part of Division 21!” ~ Anthony Sek, Lynnwood Key Club
“I took away a few really good ideas to help improve my club this year and had so much fun!” ~ Jamie Santos, Lake Stevens Key Club “It was an amazing experience to see our division and also the whole PNW Key Club bonding as one with a similar goal in mind: To Serve. I never knew such a big group of teens that are so different, yet so similar, could make such a change. The people on the streets of Seattle were definitely impressed.” ~ Jessica Bae, Kamiak Key Club “Rooming with the friends you want, meeting outgoing people who are 100% terrific, and everyone having 200% spirit, this is all worth the time going to DCON! If only DCON included the individuals who have graduated high school too; I would go every year!” ~ Peter Mach, Lynnwood Key Club

“DCON 2014 was terrific. Many friends were made and many hugs have been given. We went through many wars in the bathroom dropping the a-bombs and when you put 3 freaks of natures in one room, you end up with one interesting convention. Key-Key-Key Key Club!” ~ Tommy Cao, Lynnwood Key Club “DCON was AMAZING. Incredibly moving. Extremely valuable. Motivational. Everything. Probably one of the best experiences ever. I can't wait for next year!” ~ Kyle Rogers, Glacier Peak Key Club “My first time at DCON was incredible, because of everyone's never-ending agape love. It really felt like one big family reunion, where I met all my long lost brothers and sisters (D21ers) and long lost cousins(all the other divisions).”
“Shout out rap yo! To make this more fun, I wrote you this rap To keep all the readers from taking a nap ~ Anna Naing, Mariner Key Club Every picture holds memories, each its own story The days full of laughter while you twerk with glory I may sometimes argue, not agree with your ways But you made us smile, all through the days We joked about so much, like going to prom But then you actually asked me, it was the bomb At DCON, we worked hard, full of such stress I gave you some nicknames like Ratchbee and Ches At ICON, I witnessed how you get down and danced You always said "twerk it and give it a chance" And then at our forum, when you came in and sang The members heard you and were all like "oh dang ;)" TO It still shocks me how you have As in classes you sleep CHESTER: As it shocks others that our convos actually get deep Hakikat’s How do we match with whatever we wear shout out Why is Omak so far, it just isn’t fair didn’t fit on We made up so much drama, it was like no other the other Like when we got divorced and I became Morty's mother page so it And then there were those times when we would quietly sit was By the piano as besties and choose never to split moved to Yet we are so different, our views never alike this DCON Our opinions such opposites, like going on strike page! But I guess we have one thing: that is that we care ~ Selina When someone needs service, as key clubbers, we there HOLLA” ~ Hakikat Bains, Omak Key Club

11 MNT is Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.
With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

Hello Division 21 Bumblebees! This month’s club spotlight goes to…
KAMIAK HIGH SCHOOL KEY CLUB!
“The Key Club at Kamiak High School is one of the biggest clubs in the whole school. We started the year with over 180 members. And these members are dedicated to serving others, caring about people, and inspiring leadership. We have volunteered so many hours all together and that’s what makes us a family! Every year we volunteer at Christmas House down in Everett. This annual event provides Christmas presents for families and children that can’t afford presents. We also love to support our Kiwanis! We always try to get as many of our members to go to their events as possible. The Pancake Breakfast and the Speedway Cleanup are annual events put on by our Kiwanis and they are really fun! But I personally love auctions. The most recent auction I went to had all kinds of food and cake! It was a really good time! But the important thing is that it was an auction to raise funds/awareness for the Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County, which helps victims of domestic violence get back on their feet, get legal help, and get emotional support. I can’t wait to level up in service with my club during my term as President!” ~ Marissa Perez, President of Kamiak Key Club “Kamiak Key Club deserved this month’s Club Spotlight because they are by far the strongest club in the division! They are not the strongest because they have the most members in their club, but because they are actively doing service! Not only do they actively do service, but they have maintained a healthy relationship with their Kiwanis and their members are also active in divisional projects, DCMS & DCON as well! Congratulations on winning the 2013-2014 Membership Growth Award-Platinum at DCON 2014 this year! Thank you Kamiak Key Club for setting such a good example for the division! Our division is very fortunate to have you!” ~ Selina Nguyen, PNW Lieutenant Governor of Division 21 Key Club
MEMBER RECOGNITION 15
This month’s member of the month goes to… Alvin Wong from Lynnwood Key Club! “Alvin Wong is the most spirited and caring Key Clubber I know. He’s only been a member for a year and his growth for service and passion increased so much within the past year! His passion for service surpasses everyone in his home club. He is always at every event regardless of its importance. His dedication for service is beyond amazing. At this year’s PNW DCON 2014, Alvin won the Malcolm Lewis Outstanding Member Award thinking that he didn’t have a chance in the beginning. Alvin’s love for Key Club motivates everyone around him, which is why Alvin is the true example of an outstanding Key Clubber! The club and I love you and are really proud of you, Alvin! Even though we only spent a year with you, you made that one year the most memorable and joyful time ever. Thank you!” ~ Jenny Nguyen, President of Lynnwood Key Club “Alvin is the true embodiment of the values of Key Club. He will do anything and everything for his members. He never missed any events or DCMS this year! I am so proud of you Alvin! Thank you for everything you have done for the club & division this year!” ~ Selina Nguyen, IP President of Lynnwood Key Club
This month’s officer of the month goes to… Kyle Rogers from Glacier Peak Key Club! “Kyle Rogers is the most enthusiastic Key Clubber I have ever met, and that's not an exaggeration. He has not even begun his presidency at Glacier Peak and is already looking up ways to improve the club and get more members. He genuinely cares about others and works hard to make others feel comfortable and accepted. He is also an amazing friend and I'm glad I convinced him to join key club this year! I truly believe he will make an excellent president and I can't wait to see what he has in store for next year!” ~ Courtney Rigby, IP President of Glacier Peak Key Club
16 “KEY CLUB SPIRIT IS LIKE A HERD OF ELEPHANTS PASSING BY. THE WHOLE FLOOR WAS SHAKING DURING CLOWNING AND CLOSING SESSION! IT WAS SO LOUD IN THE ROOM THAT THE PERSON NEXT TO ME HAD TO YELL AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS SO I COULD HEAR THEM. KEY CLUB SPIRIT IS LIKE OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP OTHERS, NEVER ENDING!” ~ JASMAIR BAINS, OMAK KEY CLUB
“SEEING OTHER DIVISION'S SPIRIT REALLY MADE YOU PUMPED AND GET MORE INVOLVED. PEOPLE WHO WERE NORMALLY REALLY QUIET WERE SCREAMING THEIR HEADS OFF. IT WAS GREAT WATCHING OUR DIVISION GROW!” ~ HEATHER DO, LYNNWOOD KEY CLUB
“I WOULD DESCRIBE THE SPIRITED DIVISIONS OF KEY CLUB AS VERY RIOTOUS AND DYNAMIC, THE DEVOTION EACH MEMBER HAS TO HIS OR HERS CLUB IS ENDLESS AND CAN NEVER BE UNDONE. WE'RE ALL PART OF THE KEY CLUB FAMILY AND WHAT COMES WITH IT IS A BOND THAT CAN NEVER BE BROKEN. #AGÁPEYOUALL” ~ NATHAN KHAMPHANTHAVONG, WEST SEATTLE KEY CUB
“EVERYONE IS SO EXCITED AND PUMPED UP, KEY CLUB SPIRIT IS CONTAGIOUS!”
“I LOVE OUR DIVISION! IT WAS AMAZING EVEN THOUGH WE DIDN'T GET THE SPIRIT STICK, TO BE AROUND SO MUCH SPIRIT!”
“KEY CLUB SPIRIT IS LIKE NO OTHER SPIRIT OUT THERE. WE ALL HAVE SO MUCH PRIDE FOR OUR SEPARATE DIVISIONS YET WHEN WE COME TOGETHER AS THE WHOLE PNW YOU CAN REALLY FEEL THE LOVE AND PASSION WE ALL HAVE FOR EACH OTHER. WE MIGHT COMPETE FOR THE SPIRIT STICK BUT IN THE END WE'RE ALL KEY CLUBBERS AND NO ONE CAN MATCH OUR SPIRIT WHEN WE'RE CHEERING AS THE PNW!”
~ COURTNEY KLEIN, LAKE STEVENS KEY CLUB
~ AMBUR STAAB, LAKE STEVENS KEY CLUB
“I WOULD DESCRIBE IT AS LOUDNESS, LIKE SHOUTING. NOT ONLY THE PHYSICAL SIDE, BUT I THINK IT'S ALSO THE SHOUTING - PASSIONATE EXPRESSING - OF YOUR INNER PASSION FOR SERVING AND CARING.”
“THE KEY CLUB SPIRIT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS THAT UNITE ALL OF US MEMBERS NO MATTER WHAT POSITION WE HAVE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. IT MAKES US ALL REMEMBER WHY WE'RE DOING WHAT WE DO AND IT KEEPS US MOTIVATED AND MOVING FORWARD!”
~ JINHA PARK, KAMIAK KEY CLUB
~ JIMIN LEE, SOUTH SALEM KEY CLUB
~ COURTNEY RIGBY, GLACIER PEAK KEY CLUB
~ COURTNEY KLEIN, LAKE “KEY CLUB SPIRIT IS THE STEVENS KEY CLUB BEST & CRAZIEST SPIRIT AROUND! THE PASSION THAT KEY CLUBBERS HAVE FOR SERVICE AND THEIR DIVISION IS BOTH CONTAGIOUS & INSPIRING!” ~ SELINA NGUYEN, LYNNWOOD KEY CLUB
