A WORD FROM YOUR

Lieutenant Governor DIVISION 21 | PNW

Hello Division 21 Bumblebees! I hope you are all having a wonderful summer! For those of you who went to Seattle Rally, thank you so much for coming! I hope you were able to leave the rally with a stronger passion for service! Apply the ideas and lessons you learned at the rally to your own clubs so that you too can experience a magical world of service this upcoming school year! Now that we’re already down to the last month of summer (crazy right?), it’s time to make necessary preparations for the upcoming school year! Officers! There is a MANDATORY officer training session on August 15th, 2014 from 5pm-7pm at the Lynnwood Fire Station across from the Lynnwood Pool! I hope that you will be able to attend because there will be new resources to distribute as well as important information to discuss regarding changes that will be applied to our division! MEMBERS! MEMBERS! MEMBERS! Its that time of year again to start thinking about why YOU love Key Club and how you can recruit new members to this amazing organization! Start promoting NOW! Get together with other members to start making posters, flyers, videos etc! GET THE WORD OUT! Tell prospective members about all the opportunities they can have through Key Club! From the crazy memories to the limitless hours of service, tell them what makes Key Club unique! Why are YOU still in Key Club? What was your favorite Key Club memory? What is the PNW District? What is Division 21? Address simple questions such as these so that your members are well equipped with Key Club 101! With all that said, have a safe & fun rest of the summer!

With Love & Service,

Selina Nguyen

PNW Lieutenant Governor of Division 21 Key Club

A WORD FROM YOUR DIVISIONAL EXECUTIVE BOARD DIVISION 21 | PNW

"Summer is almost over, and it's time to get ready for another school year! As many of you bumblebees know, Key Club is a great way to make an impact and become a leader! So get your friends, and the friend of your friends involved! Reach out to your past members via social media to let them know when the first meeting will be and meet with your school's Exec. Board to plan ahead! The upcoming officer training is a great way to get your service gears back in shape!“ – Jessica Bae, Divisional Executive Assistant "Hi KCs! I’m so excited for school to start! Wanna know why? Because that means that I get to invite every freshman into the amazing world of Key Club International!!! Now one special way that I invite people to our club meetings are that I personally message them on Facebook! I know, weird and creepy right? But if works! That’s exactly how I was invited into Key Club! And now I never want to leave!! But the hardest thing to do is to keep those Key Clubbers active in your club! The best advice I could possible give to you is to just be yourself! Tell them how big KC is, and how much it means to you! Once they see what true service is, then I’m sure they’ll follow you to the ends of the earth…. well hopefully you don’t actually do that because that would take a really long time and we don’t want you to be late for school the next day…. But in all seriousness, be yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask for help! If you need a Div. Assist. to come to one of your meetings to explain how HUGE Key Club is, then just call me! I am more than happy to make a trip to your school! But before school actually starts, remember to relax. Take a day or two just to relax and center yourself for the busy school year ahead. You can do this! I know you can! Chose love! And be happy! Serve! Agape! Constant success simply means you’re not trying hard enough! Love you all! – Kohta Hansen, Divisional Executive Assistant

“Hey Key Clubbers! Questions have been asked about how to promote Key Club in your school. I think that if we try our best to make the events in the club fun, we will be able to promote the club well since the events would be fun for people instead of something they have to do to get it out of the way. To get your service hours , you should do something that you are interested in and enjoy doing so that it is beneficial to you.“ – Thinh Do, Divisional Secretary

2014-2015 PNW DISTRICT DISTRICT PROJECT PROJECT :WHAT IS THE ELIMINATE PROJECT?: With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

:WHAT IS MNT?:

MNT is Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) is a nonprofit organization that raises money to benefit hospitalized kids while increasing awareness of its member hospitals. All CMN Hospitals contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct life-saving research, implement outreach programs and provide health care for children whose parents can’t afford to pay. HOW DOES KEY CLUB HELP? In 1997, Key Club made Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals preferred charity for its members to support.

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. March of Dimes was founded by our 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the fight against polio. After the discovery of the polio vaccine, March of Dimes focused their efforts to improve the health of babies and has been successful with the help and enthusiasm of many grassroots volunteers. HOW DOES KEY CLUB HELP? Since 1978, Key Clubs have hosted fundraising and awareness programs to support the March of Dimes, raising over $116,000 through fundraisers in 2011 alone! UNICEF, the only organization of the United Nations dedicated exclusively to children, works with other United Nations bodies, governments and nongovernmental organizations to assist in children’s needs through communitybased services in primary health care, basic education, and safe water and sanitation in more than 150 developing countries. HOW DOES KEY CLUB HELP? Since 1994, Key Club has been Trick Or Treating for UNICEF and over the years has raised nearly US$5 million for iodine deficiency programs worldwide and HIV and AIDS programs in Kenya and Swaziland. Now it’s helping The Eliminate Project. To get more service project ideas to help this preferred charity, go to http://www.keyclub.org/service/fund/osp/unicef.aspx

INTL. TRUSTEE INTRODUCTION Hey, Pacific-Northwest! My name is Tashrima Hossain, and I’d like to introduce myself as the new International Trustee for your district. It is such an honor to be in your service, primarily by ensuring that your voices are heard at the international level during the upcoming year. I’m excited to join the PNW moose! I’ve already received so much enthusiasm from the Board, I’ve heard many great things about PNW, and I can’t wait to see all the great achievements your district has in store.

To let you know a little about myself, I am from Cypress, Texas, which is a suburban area adjacent to the Houston border. In addition to Key Club, I devote much of my time to debate and Student Council— which often leaves with very little time for sleep! As a result, I’m a bit of a grandma, and I like spending much of my free time sleeping, reading, or just hanging out with friends. For those of you who would like to know more about my duties as International Trustee, I have a few basic responsibilities: attending International Board meetings, participating in a maximum of two district visits, and acting as a representative of the international level of Key Club. In addition, Governor Lisa and I completed a Governor-Trustee agreement, which identified the main expectations Lisa has of me, as your district’s Trustee. Many of said goals revolve around constant communication and building positive Sister District relations—all of which are means to ensure that I effectively represent your views on the international level. Additionally, I serve with Jenalee Beazley, Rip Livingston, Liz Moore, and Nicole Lema on the Growth and Communications Committee. There, we predominantly focus on fostering a connection between advisors and Kiwanis clubs, making Key Club a school-wide name, creating a “cool factor” for Key Club, empowering local clubs to publicize their work, creating a strategic growth plan for KCI, and creating an annual club census. We already have a very specific set of goals and action steps for the first quarter; I plan to update you all with any progress in that arena. During my term, I will stay committed to the goals I campaigned with, but more than that, I intend to actively serve as a resource for you all. If you have questions about amendments, elections, service, or general Key Club knowledge, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m here as a resource, friend, and assistant in any way you may need. Call me, email me, Facebook me— I’m always ready to lend a hand.

INTL. PRESIDENT INTRODUCTION Hello, Key Clubbers! My name is Maria Palazzolo, and I am so thankful to be your 2014-2015 Key Club International President! I was elected at the International Convention in Anaheim, California, about a month ago. It is a privilege to serve you and the rest of our 267,000 members. As Key Clubbers, we have a unique perspective of the world. We, as teenagers, get to make lasting impacts within our communities and throughout the world. I find it absolutely amazing that our organization is made of so many selfless individuals with one mission: to positively change the world. As your International President, one of my main goals is to make Key Club International more accessible to provide more ideas and opportunities to make your club the best it can be. This can be done through: Webinars On topics such as: The $.50 dues increase Grants available to fund club projects, such as the Youth Opportunities Fund {more information here: http://www.keyclub.org/service/fund/yof.aspx} Twitter chats with International Board members Increased interaction through social media We will also be promoting the Eliminate Project, which is the Kiwanis family’s campaign to raise $110 million by the end of 2015 to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the face of the planet. It nears its completion at the end of the year, and we need to work tirelessly to meet our goal. I will work with our International Vice President, Kevin Zhang, and our eleven International Trustees to meet these goals to make this year a productive one for our organization. I hope to see all of you at our International Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, next summer! Imagine 2,000 people who are just as focused on helping others as you are. It’s an absolutely amazing time. If you have any questions about Key Club International, International Convention, or would just like to talk to me, feel free to email me! Have a great year, and thank you for all that you do in your homes, schools, and communities! Yours in service,

Maria Palazzolo Key Club International President ipmariapalazzolo@gmail.com keyclub.org
