A WORD FROM YOUR

Lieutenant Governor DIVISION 21 | PNW

Hello Division 21 Bumblebees! Can you BEE-lieve that this is my second to last newsletter already? I know, it’s so crazy! In exactly 31 days, I will be walking across the stage my very last time as Division 21’s Lieutenant Governor… But in the mean time, I will cherish my last month with you all! Let’s make it an unforgettable month! As many of you know, DCON 2015 is just around the corner so our division will be very BEE-sy preparing for this event! First off, February 21st will be our PRE-DCON Rally (aka February DCM)! ALL DIVISION 21 ATTENDEES are required to participate in order to be fully prepared for DCON 2015! I will go over the code of conduct, dress code and schedule in depth with all clubs in addition to distributing spirit packs, learning cheers and making spirit items! This will be a jam packed DCM so BEE sure to attend! (See page 18) In addition, anyone interested in participating in the divisional spirit cheer video is welcome to come to Lynnwood High School February 26th at 3pm for filming! Please come decked out in your Division 21 spirit gear! YELLOW & black! Also, on March 7th, Division 21 is having our first Divisional Awards Banquet that everyone is welcome to come to! However, there is limited space for 90 people so it is first come first serve! The dress code is semi formal for this event because we will be taking lots of pictures! This is my last event with the division so don’t miss out! You can RSVP only through your club president! Money for your entree must be brought to the PRE-DCON Rally! (See page 19) I am looking forward to seeing all of you very soon! Please don’t hesitate to ask me any questions you may have! I am and will always be at your service! With Love & Service,

Selina Nguyen

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT WHAT IS THE ELIMINATE PROJECT? With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

WHAT IS MNT? MNT is Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

All CMN Hospitals contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct life-saving research, implement outreach programs and provide health care for children whose parents can’t afford to pay. HOW DOES KEY CLUB HELP? In 1997, Key Club made Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals preferred charity for its members to support.

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. March of Dimes was founded by our 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the fight against polio. After the discovery of the polio vaccine, March of Dimes focused their efforts to improve the health of babies and has been successful with the help and enthusiasm of many grassroots volunteers. HOW DOES KEY CLUB HELP? Since 1978, Key Clubs have hosted fundraising and awareness programs to support the March of Dimes, raising over $116,000 through fundraisers in 2011 alone! INTERCLUBS 12

Jackson has always been like Lynnwood's sister club in like a homies-forlife kind of way. Getting to do an interclub event with them on Martin Luther King Day was just meant to be. Our clubs worked hard together to help beautify the park ,which was a fantastic experience to help out our community by planting and cleaning up the environment, and we further solidified our clubs’ soul sister bond. Our next step now is to work together to rock the house at DCON in March! – Monina Nepomuceno

In January, Mariner Key Club volunteered at the Everett Food Bank! This was actually an event that Jackson Key Club invited us to do with them! We helped sort out food that would later be distributed to people and families in need! Plus, we got to meet a bunch of awesome Jackson Key Clubbers! Thank you Jackson Key Club for inviting us to this service project! We hope to do more interclub projects in the future! – Honglam Van

The main event for the month of January for Lake Stevens Key Club was the interclub hosted by Jackson Key Club. The experience was great and gave our members a chance to meet members from other clubs. It was like a baby DCM and has inspired some members to attend the March DCM! It was great to see the LTG elect in action and even though we didn't get to plant many apple trees, the experience was still fun and exciting! – Ambur Staab

Jackson Key Club held their first divisional interclub! With the participation of four different schools in the division, we all had a great time getting to know one another. It was muddy, cold, and extremely wet but members were able to bond and support each other through all the difficult tasks we did. We picked rags, dead plants, and more off of the ground so that Farmer Forest and his crew could plant apple trees for the upcoming season. Although we didn’t plant apple trees until the very end, it was still a fun and memorable experience! It was WONDERFUL getting to know all of you bumble bees! Can't wait to see y'all at DCON! Jackson would love to do another interclub before going to DCON so if anyone is up to help us help the Girl Scouts sort out their extremely delightful cookies, please contact me as soon as possible! – Vania Park

SUMMARY: 5 out of 11 schools in Division 21 were represented at the JANUARY DCM! Members got to ice skate at the Lynnwood Ice Skating Rink and meet other Key Clubbers throughout our division. It was a DCM filled with selfies with strangers, falling first time skaters and frantic and embarrassing falls, but it was still a fun and memorable social DCM! WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND DCMS? You should attend DCMS because it’s a great way to meet Key Clubbers within the division, get out of your comfort zone and experience what it’s like to be a part of something bigger than your club! DCMS are also SUPER FUN so don’t miss out on the experience!
