Heathman hopes to help breast cancer cause Pink-room proceeds to benefit Puget Sound Susan G. Komen organization BY CARRIE WOOD cwood@kirklandreporter.com
When a pink ribbon tied around the entire Heathman Hotel facility was a bit too much to pull off, Les Utley thought about what else the business could do to help fight breast cancer. “We kept coming up with crazy ideas. Then the idea just morphed,” said Utley, general manager. The business has created a pink
room, complete with tasteful pink walls, curtains, artwork, furniture, towels and even pink robes and a coffee maker. All room proceeds will benefit the Puget Sound Susan G. Komen in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “We’re really proud of it,” said Utley. “We have a long history of supporting Susan Komen in a big way. This [ more BREAST page 12 ]

any Eastside residents know Tom Colicchio from Bravo’s TV show “Top Chef.” Most don’t know how far his passion for ending hunger in the United States extends. Colicchio was scheduled to be the main speaker during Hopelink’s Reaching
Out Luncheon Monday at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue to raise money for the nonprofit that seeks to end hunger and homelessness on the Eastside. But not even an emergency back surgery could prevent Colicchio from lending his voice to the cause. “I have been active for years in the battle against hunger and I am not alone,” said Colicchio in an audio

But he pointed out that hunger in the U.S. is not like what most people think of: starving or skinny children in Africa. “Her and her siblings were overweight and they regularly had colds and infections,” said Colicchio. “Managing a problem isn’t solving it.” With Colicchio not able to physically attend, Lisa Brummel, a co-owner of the Seattle Storm and Chief People Officer with Microsoft, stepped up to extend the message to the audience of 1,700. Brummel, dressed in a chef ’s coat, said that she was able to talk to Colicchio and while she wanted to ask questions about Top Chef, all he wanted to talk about was ending hunger. “He is on a mission to stop hunger in America,” said Brummel. “We have a lot of things in common.” She described three main areas that people need to focus on to end the problem. The first was educating others on how to farm and what goes into growing vegetables.
Jonathan Dickenson, a former client of Hopelink, is now a board member and was featured in one of the videos at the luncheon. CARRIE WOOD, Kirkland Reporter
“When you see the look in a child’s eye when they put a seed in the ground and then come back to see what they have grown it is amazing,” said Brummel. The second issue is knowing what to eat. “We are a highly industrious nation and we can produce a lot,” said Brummel. “But a lot of it is highly unhealthy.” Brummel talked about educating people on what is healthy and what is not nutritious. The third part was

unding for the arts in Kirkland and throughout King County is dwindling – probably not a surprise to most. But in a recession where many people are struggling to support their lifestyles, art is more important than ever as it provides quality of life. That’s what dozens of local art groups learned during a meeting on Oct. 10. The Kirkland Cultural Council, which manages the city’s art collection, presented its bi-yearly CACHET meeting (Collaboration of Arts, Culture, Heritage, Education, and Theatre). Local arts, culture, and heritage related organizations gathered at International Community School to hear about the latest cultural resources and events. Those present included Kirkland dance studios, businesses, art societies, and art supporters. To show the importance of the arts, Kirkland native violinmaker, Henry Bischofberger, demonstrated how to craft a violin during the meeting. Nobody likes tolls and taxes, but if our state is going to have any hope of building highways and moving people it’s going to take both. Tim Eyman’s initiative would make both nearly impossible. First, he wants only the Legislature to be able to set tolls. That sounds good – political accountability and all that – but in reality it would make financing our roads even more expensive. Bonding companies – and bonds are the only real way to build roads – find it overly risky to leave toll-setting to the whims of legislators. As a consequence, they rate such road bonds lower, which means the state has to pay a higher interest rate. That makes the state have to pay more to finance the road projects. That means fewer roads. Tolls are a user fee; only those who use such roads pay a toll. That’s the way it should be. But don’t just take our word on this; transportation experts across the state oppose I-1125. So do business, labor and environmental leaders. Vote “No”on I-1125.
Initiative 1183 Sale of beer, wine and hard liquor There are lots of things a state should do. Peddling beer, wine and hard liquor isn’t one of them. Vote “Yes”on this initiative. What, you say, didn’t we already vote “no”on this last year? Yes, but the two measures we had before us last year had flaws. This one is far better. The state would stop selling spirits and auction off its liquor stores. Additional private liquor stores could open, but only if they meet a size requirement (no, there won’t be liquor for sale at every neighborhood gas station). Another point: while I-1183 gets the state out of the liquor selling business, it continues the state’s enforcement to keep booze out
of the hands of our kids. In fact, the initiative doubles the fines for businesses selling alcohol to minors. Vote “Yes”on I-1183.
Initiative 1163 Training, background checks for long-term health workers This sounds good: shouldn’t long-term care workers have training to serve elderly and disabled people? And shouldn’t we know if they have a shady past? Sure, but the initiative is misleading. In fact, such training already is required by the state. And background checks already are performed. What’s really going on is an attempt by the Service Employees International Union to force the state to come up with an estimated $80 million for such programs while it already is facing another $2.8 billion deficit. There’s no reason to gut other programs or raise taxes for such a questionable measure. Vote “No”on I-1163.
Senate Joint Resolution 8205 This measure cleans up language in the state Constitution to
make it clear that otherwise-eligible citizens of the United States can vote here if they have resided in Washington, and in their county and precinct, for at least 30 days before the election. There’s no organized opposition to the measure. Vote “Yes”on SJR 8205
Senate Joint Resolution 8206 This would require the Legislature to transfer additional moneys to its budget stabilization account in each fiscal biennium in which the state has received “extraordinary revenue growth,”as defined, with certain limitations. If you’re scratching your head, here’s the bottom line. Remember when the state was booming and the Legislature was spending like there was no tomorrow? We all know that tomorrow eventually came. SJR 8206 would mandate that some of the “extraordinary” revenue the state receives in good times would be saved, rather than spent. Isn’t that what we do with our household budgets? The state should, too. Vote “Yes”on SJR 8206.

Vote NO to on-the-job training It is deplorable that a PAC (Political Action Committee) has resorted to negative campaigning during Kirkland’s election for City Council. It annoys us that these “concerned citizens” hide behind a PAC instead of personally standing behind their words. Who are they? They suggest that we should oppose the reelection of Councilman Bob Sternoff. Should we also ignore his excellent record of public service and experience? We expect the candidates to compete based on their record of community service and experience and their vision of what they will bring to the council and to the city. Bob’s opponent has no experience – he readily admits that he has no experience but says that he will learn if elected.
He only recently became a citizen of Kirkland. He has had no past interest in the affairs of our city, nor has he served on any boards or committees related to city government. On the other hand, Bob Sternoff has been an active member of our city council since 2005. He is the chair of our Public Safety Committee. He is a member of the Suburban Cities Association Board, the Puget Sound Regional Council Board, the Regional Transit Committee Board, Chair of the Suburban Cities Growth Management Planning Committee Caucus and Chair of the Suburban Cities Growth Management Planning Board (PSRC) Caucus. Prior to serving on the council, Bob served eight years on the Kirkland Park Board, including three terms as chair. He also was a founding member of the Downtown Action Team
where he served as vice chair of the Executive Committee, chair of the Parking Subcommittee and vice chair of the Lakeshore Plaza Design and Development Sub-Committee. Councilman Sternoff has also served as a member of the Juanita Beach Advisory Committee, Skate Board Park Committee and 2002 Park Bond Steering Committee and chaired the Annexation Sub-Committee. He has been an active citizen of Kirkland for over 30 years. Let’s face it. Especially during these tough economic times, we cannot afford to have on-the-job training for a council member. We need someone who understands the issues, who is actively engaged in working for our better interests and who has a proven track record. That someone is Bob Sternoff.
J. Donald and Merrily Dicks, Democrats for Sternoff
Former mayors, council members support Sternoff To the Citizens of Kirkland, We, the undersigned, are former Kirkland Mayors, former Kirkland City Council members, and citizens of Kirkland. We have all chosen to support Bob Sternoff in the current election based on his unequalled experience and tireless work on countless local and regional committees and organizations on behalf of all Kirkland citizens. As the council chair of the annexation committee, he continues to work toward creating a unified Kirkland. We are disappointed in the campaign being waged against current Councilman Sternoff by a small anony- [ more LETTERS page 7 ]

There was no lawful finding of any violation of existing city or state laws or codes, ethical or otherwise. No other candidate for city council can match the understanding and familiarity Bob brings to the council and city. As those who live in this great city and have a vested interest in its future, we stand by Councilman Sternoff.

Nixon would protect businesses My son recently graduated from a prestigious local university, and, while having interviewed with numerous local businesses, hasn’t been offered a position. So we’re thinking to start our own new business together, and we may be looking at possible locations here to rent. Having said that, the record of Kirkland in recent times in terms of its attitude toward business, family or otherwise, has been spotty. Witness the graffiti abatement effort not long ago wherein a city employee in a snazzy PT Cruiser would come visit your place of business when it got “tagged, snap a photo and send you a notice of infraction costing a thousand dollars and giving you three days to abate the graffiti yourself. How are we seriously going to look at a location in Kirkland
if some such foolishness in municipal government were to crop up again? I urge you to consider your vote carefully and vote for Toby Nixon. I’ve mentioned this to Toby and he’s as shocked by this as some of you reading this must be. We have a lot of empty storefronts downtown. Please vote for Toby and see what doesn’t happen in municipal circles as well as what is likely to happen based on Toby’s accomplishments in Olympia.

Greenway listens to residents As a 30-year resident of Kirkland, there have been times when I thought my city council wished I would shut up and go away. That is, until Jessica Greenway was elected. I called her about a problem several of us had with the way a piece of property in our neighborhood was being used, and not only did I get a call back, in short order my neighbors and I had a meeting with the City Manager, the Mayor, Jessica and two city department managers who all wanted to know the details of the problem and how to make sure it never happened again. Since then, when other issues have troubled me, I’ve called Jessica. She listens, she understands my issues, and she also helps me understand other points of view so I can better understand how city government has to balance the needs of all the people who, together, make this such a vital and attractive city to live and do business in. She has an incredible grasp of the details of all the complex processes that make this city work, and sees the bigger picture at the same time. Now when we’re figuring out how to make our latest annexation work, how to stay on top of our economic challenges without losing

Jessica Greenway’s wisdom desperately needed on council I met Jessica Greenway years ago when she was on the Kirkland Planning Commission. Since she was so thoughtful and concerned about citizens’ issues, I have supported her for years as a member of the Kirkland City Council. Jessica’s integrity is beyond reproach. She has continued to hear Kirkland citizens’ concerns on council and has voted accordingly. She is a great value for the City of Kirkland with her budgeting knowledge and understanding. She has been working diligently and fairly for years on our business and neighborhood growth plans. Her wisdom is desperately needed on the council. Without her, I believe the voices of citizens would be overlooked. Let’s make sure to exercise our privilege to vote and re-elect Jessica Greenway for a seat on council.

Kirkland Parkplace project suit settled; building permit may be next BY PEYTON WHITELY pwhitely@kirklandreporter
A lawsuit that was among the things stalling what’s probably Kirkland’s most significant proposed development has been settled, but what’s to follow remains unknown. The project is Parkplace. It’s the biggest thing in downtown Kirkland, arguably dominating the city’s core, maybe even eclipsing the waterfront, which while forming a major city attraction, also is largely hidden behind downtown buildings. Parkplace, at the intersection of Sixth Street and Central Way, is nearly the first thing people see as they take the main exit to Kirkland at Northeast 85th Street.
It’s also generally regarded as being outmoded, dating to 1982, trailing such competitors as Redmond’s Town Center, and once housing a long-gone Frederick & Nelson discount outlet as among its main tenants; F&N went out of business in 1992. There have been plenty of ideas for how to update the center. In 2000, a former owner, Michael Shulman, was proposing spending as much as $50 million for things like an underground parking garage and a national anchoring tenant. But those plans never materialized, the center was sold, and in 2007, the new owners, Seattle’s Touchstone Corp., brought out their own ideas.
t 3PPU $BOBM 5SFBUNFOU t *NQMBOUT t *NNFEJBUF %FOUVSFT
The Touchstone plans called for 1.65 million square feet of space, total demolition of existing buildings, two hotels and 3,349 parking spaces. Such proposals didn’t please some people, while others cheered. At a 2008 hearing, for example, more than 60 people spoke, with opponents questioning such elements as heights and setbacks and supporters lauding features like an expanded tax base and more shopping destinations. There were ongoing reviews and appeals to such bodies as a city Design Review Board, hearing examiner and the City Council.

Research shows yoga can mitigate breast cancer symptoms. CONTRIBUTED from the perspective of energy, we can say that congested energy from stress and negative emotions can block energy flow in the heart chakra. Eventually, this blockage affects the body physically and can create conditions more favorable for the disease of breast cancer. The main focus of Dahn Yoga known as Energy Yoga (“Dahn means vital life energy) is to help release stressful energy first from your chest and then from your whole body through various exercises such as opening chest exercises and breathing, and change emotional mode to happiness by smiling or laughing. n recent years, the month of October has become bright with the appearance of pink ribbons. These pink ribbons are reminders of breast cancer in our society. Each year in the U.S., more than 192,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s the population of a medium-sized city. In the face of such numbers, how can yoga help? Research shows that yoga may be able to help improve physical functioning, reduce fatigue and stress, improve sleep and improve overall quality of life. This can be especially true for women recovering from surgery or undergoing chemotherapy. In addition to the physical concerns, yoga can address the emotional aspects associated with breast cancer. Dr. Sam Hanash, a researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, hopes to develop a noninvasive blood test that would be a companion test to mammograms but more accurate in detecting breast cancer at an early stage when it is most curable. Should tobacco be prohibited in parks, playgrounds, walking trails, sports fields and other public outdoor recreation areas? That’s what the City of Kirkland would like to know from residents, park visitors, and others. An online survey will be available through Oct. 28 that gauges public interest in whether the city should enact legislation that would prohibit the use of smoke and smokeless tobacco in city owned and maintained parks, open space, and other public recreation areas. To take the survey, go to www. kirklandwa.gov/tobaccosurvey. The Kirkland Parks & Community Services Department, King County Department of Parks and
Natural Resources and other King County cities are collaborating on a “Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) grant to create neighborhoods where it’s safe to walk or bike, where schools and childcare setting are providing healthier foods and drinks, and where all King County residents can breathe smoke-free air. More than 25 cities in 12 counties throughout Washington State have adopted policies promoting tobaccofree and smoke-free public outdoor areas. Results from Kirkland’s online survey, combined with the results from a recent in-person survey conducted at several downtown city parks, will be presented to the City’s Park Board in early November. Greenway points out that even during the recent economic downturn Kirkland has continued to add new businesses. In 2008 the city had 3,456 businesses that are licensed to do business in Kirkland. In 2010 the city had 5,045. Part of maintaining that and further growing the economy is also making sure the city has the right policies in place for things such as land use and transportation. “We also have to keep the businesses that are already here and we have a business retention program that is a

Committee. “I thought hard about it, it wasn’t an automatic yes because I am involved in so many activities,” said Nixon, who is running against Councilwoman Jessica Greenway for Position 4. “But ultimately I decided it was the right thing to do.” Nixon is also the president of the Washington Coalition for Open Government. “Kirkland is our home
www.kirklandreporter.com and I want it to be the best that it can be,” said Nixon. “That is why I have devoted so much of my time and energy over the last nearly two decades to making it an even better place.” The candidate considers his biggest strength to have been bred by his 19 years at Microsoft negotiating operating agreements with other companies. “We meet with our competitors in the industry, fierce competitors, who would like nothing more than to see us go out of business,” said Nixon. “And yet we have common interests … It is kind of a mine field and for 26 years I have navigated that and been a technical diplomat.”
He said that those skills served him well in Olympia where he was known as a person who would work across the aisle. Nixon thinks it will help him to achieve his top three issues for Kirkland: spurring economic development, transparency in government and getting the budget under control. “It seems like the city has had to go in and make cuts every year and this started even before the economy tanked before 2008,” said Nixon. “The challenge is that we have some longterm trends where the city’s costs are rising faster than revenues.” Nixon said that retirement and health-care costs are

money you stop.” But to get any projects done the city needs revenue and Nixon believes that is done by managing the budget better and increasing economic development. Nixon points to high vacancy rates and the ongoing situation at Totem Lake Malls as where the city could do better. He takes issue with how far the city has gone with regulations. “We are saddled with this very specific, in my mind, stifling (development) plan,” said Nixon. “Instead of enabling innovation and letting the developers be creative and do what they think is going to be best … I think the role of the city is to make sure that people don’t injure each other. If there are any negative impacts on neighboring properties … you have to make sure those are mitigated. But it shouldn’t be the city’s role to impose the vision of the city council members.” The candidate also took issue with the city’s business license fee or head tax. “There is no other issue I have heard about more from people in the annexation area,” said Nixon. “ … Just the idea that somebody who is a real estate agent, operating out of their own home, they are not having any more impact on the infrastructure of the city by virtue of being a real estate agent than someone who is just living there. And yet the city wants to charge them hundreds of dollars. It doesn’t make sense to me.” Nixon said he would, at the very least, see an exemption for some of the smaller businesses. A passion for Nixon is transparency in government. And although he thinks that Kirkland does pretty well with the issue, he also thinks it can always be better. “I want Kirkland to be a model to the rest of the state of how to do open government right,” said Nixon. “From a city policy perspective that will be a priority for me, to see what more can we do.”

The group also launched a Web site, www. concernedcitizensofkirkland. com. “We’re a number of people who have been watching what goes on in Kirkland, said Albinger, the group’s spokesman. “We’re concerned that most citizens don’t know about Bob’s behavior and the ramifications it has. The alleged violations deal with hundreds of emails that Sternoff sent to his girlfriend during council meetings via city email in 2009. Several of the private emails were of a sexually explicit nature, while others were characterized as threatening towards other council members and citizens. The council voted to investigate the emails during a Sept. 1, 2009 meeting. The vote came on the heels of a blog post by Scott St. Clair of the Evergreen Freedom Foundation that accused the councilman of inappropriate use of the city’s email system. The council authorized the city to spend $5,000 for an independent investigator to review the legal circumstances behind the emails and to determine if the emails violated city or state laws. However, the council subsequently discontinued action against Sternoff on Jan. 19, 2010 and made public the Sherman Report,
which examined the email who requested the Shercommunications. The report man Report. Do we want to reelect a representative who shows poor judgment in the way he treats his constituents? It all comes down to Sternoff’s character, he added. “I think that character is really important. Representing the city on one of many committees is a good thing but many people can do that, he said of the various committees that Sternoff is active in on behalf of the city. “Your own personal integrity and personal character is very important. However, Sternoff disagrees. “I’ll certainly put my character up against anybody who would try and in fact implement a smear campaign, said Sternoff, noting his involvement in the community and in regional matters. “I hope that the work I’ve done far out-shadows whatever other people conceive as negative. He also said at the time of the emails, he chose to “accept whatever blame there was, to apologize immediately, I didn’t screw around, I allowed the personal emails to be released. I figured that would show much better character than trying to hide something. Sternoff noticed the politi-
cal group’s signage displayed next to many of his signs when he was on a Walk Your Kids to School event on Oct. 10. He describes the group’s campaign tactics as “dishonest. He reminded voters that he did not break any laws or city codes. “There’s an assumption that they (Concerned Citizens) make that the Sherman Report was somehow legitimate and that Sherman was acting as judge, jury and executioner and that’s not what he was doing and that’s not the result and that’s not what happened, said Sternoff, a developer. “So their premise to start with that they’re hanging their hat on is shaky at best. However, Albinger says Sternoff’s apology is not the problem. “His apology is fine. I don’t have a problem with his apology. It’s just that the council is going to let him off with an apology for breaking state laws and city codes? That doesn’t seem right or fair, he said. “The city council did nothing – and that’s a real question why the council didn’t do a darn thing. I have my guess of why it was because Bob’s supporters want a resounding victory at
the polls and he didn’t have anything to worry about. So he got away with these violations of law and I think an egregious violation of the public trust with an apology. He continued, “And frankly, you can’t properly discipline a person with poor judgement and bad character anyway. The best you can do is let them go. Challenger Jason Gardiner said he does not know who the Concerned Citizens group is. Their campaigning has also not affected his own campaign much, “other than people thinking that I’m the one doing it, Gardiner said of the signs. He added, “I wish they would have gone a different route to support me and I hope they get me elected because I’m Jason Gardiner and not because I’m not Bob Sternoff. Despite the Concerned Citizens of Kirkland’s campaigning, Sternoff says he has a positive outlook about things. “Fortunately, we’ve got a tremendous amount of friends and this has reenergized an already-energized group of people who support me, said Sternoff. “People are upset. The first thing they’ve made loud and clear is that they value what I do for the city and they value me, which is very heartwarming. I keep doing what I do and hopefully what people want me to go do and at the end of the day, the voters will make the decision.

LWHS FOOTBALL LOSES TO INTERLAKE The Lake Washington football team lost at Interlake last Friday night, falling 58-26 to the 2A conference foe. Trailing by just one point at the end of the first quarter, Interlake’s Jordan Todd rushed for over 200 yards in the second quarter and the Saints never looked back. Lake Washington will host Juanita in a cross town match up on Friday, Oct. 21. Last season was the first year in many that the teams met as conference rivals. The following week, Lake Washington will finish out the regular season with a home game against Mercer Island.

lose to tying the game in the fourth quarter, the Juanita football team faced a series of setbacks that eventually ended the game with a loss to Mount Si. The final score was 28-21 for the Wildcats. Juanita head coach Shaun Tarantola said his team was in the game, but every time they got momentum, the Rebels made mistakes to hold themselves back. Despite the mistakes, he said the team has made great progress in the areas they have been working on, specifically their passing game. “We just felt like we were going to be able to take advantage of our speed against Mount Si, but they did a good job of keeping our speed contained. It’s the thing we’ve been working on all year, our passing game, and it’s good to see it kind of coming alive now. We’ve got good, young players, young receivers, young quarterbacks so it’s good to see that how we expected it to be all year. Hopefully we take the next couple of steps in these next games,” said Tarantola. Celebrating homecoming, the Rebels began the night with a scoreless first quarter, after Mount Si scored for a 7-0 start to the game. we just want to emphasize to clean up the mental mistakes.” After Juanita got the ball back with just 1:07 left to go in the game, Milburn threw to Ty Griffith for a touchdown to make it 28-21. Tarantola said he was impressed with the play of both Milburn and junior quarterback Riley Hilliker, as well as Griffith and Rayon McNairy. “We had quite a few guys – some new guys stepped up tonight,” said the coach. “One guy that we’ve been real excited about all year, tonight he finally put it all together, was Ty Griffith. He caught two touchdowns tonight, he made some big plays. Kendrick Murphy had a big game, returned for a touchdown and did a great job on defense. Trayon McNairy did a great job running the ball and as outside linebacker getting some big sacks. Those three are new faces that stepped up tonight, along with our quarterbacks, Landyn Milburn and Riley Hilliker. There are a lot of good things out of it, but end results we still got beat 28-21 and the scoreboard means a lot to us. We just have to fix that.” Juanita will travel to Lake Washington on Oct. 21 for a game against their cross town rivals.
