Extra pay to coaches from booster clubs Title IX rules come into play, district approved funds with conditions By Megan Managan mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
As of Dec. 31, the Mercer Island High School football and gymnastics coaches could be earning a little extra money, thanks to a supplemental contract. The issue, brought up during the Sept. 8 Mercer Island School District Board meeting, would give the two coaches extra money for offseason duties, provided by the sports booster clubs. The board conditionally approved the con-
tracts after a lengthy discussion. Under the agreement, the football booster club and the gymnastics parent club would provide funds to the coaches for out of season activities, which help promote the programs and prepare younger students. However, football boosters cannot provide money to the coach unless the girls gymnastics team raises a similar amount. It all has to do with Title IX. Title IX is a 1972 federal law that requires equal opportunities for males and females at institutions that receive public funds. The football boosters originally brought the idea forward in May, but the proposal only included

funds for football, which would have put the district out of compliance with Title IX. After revamping the proposal to include gymnastics, it was reintroduced. The difference in total amounts given to the two sports results in the difference in size between the programs. Districts around the state must comply with the federal law and there is currently an investigation into the issue at the state’s Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction after hundreds of complaints were filed in the last year. The MIHS football boosters have set aside $5,000 to give to head coach Brett Ogata for duties outside of his regular coaching requirements. In the agreement, the booster club has outlined that the coach will work with the junior varsity and sophomore teams, conduct individualized meetings with younger players

Council deals with aftermath of Lindell lawsuit Council considers $250 fine for hosting underage drinking, closed session held to discuss employee roles in Lindell case By Reporter Staff
At their regular meeting on Monday evening, the Mercer Island City Council discussed the viability of the imposition of a $250 fine to a person who allows underage drinking on their property. After a discussion considering the intent and efficacy
of a fine, the council voted to direct staff to come back with a draft ordinance later in the year. In January, the City Council had directed staff to examine the option of creating a civil infraction as an additional method of deterring underage drinking on the Island. The idea for the civil penalty comes from the need to add another tool in the fight to stop underage drinking. Background data prepared by city staff states, “Underage drinking is an item of great concern that brings the city’s police department, city attorney’s

law enforcement and the prosecutor to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that the violator knowingly permitted the use or possession of alcohol on his or her premises. The person in control of a premises can avoid criminal liability by demonstrating a reasonable doubt that he or she was unaware of the possession or consumption of alcohol by minors on his/her premises.” Without criminal penalties for hosting underage drinking, counties and cities in California where there are no such laws developed civil penalties for such offenses. City staff examined several ordinances from California and concluded that the creation of a civil infraction covering underage drinking “could fill a gap in the city’s current enforcement tools.” The Council also held a special executive session prior to the Monday meeting as requested by Councilmembers Mike Grady and Mike Cero to discuss matters related to conclusion of the Lindell v. City of Mercer Island case. The two councilmembers wrote to the mayor

A letter sent late Monday to Councilmembers Grady and Cero from attorneys representing city employees named in the memo, Kryss Segle and Johnny Segle, took issue with statements about them. The letter, from attorney Brett N. Wiese to the two councilmembers, said in part: “This letter is to inform you that the statements written about my clients in your memo contain grossly inaccurate, false and misleading information.” It continues, “Your actions may be in violation of applicable law.” The
Adding to the mix was an email written to Islanders by Councilman Dan Grausz who apologized for the lawsuit and its outcome. The letter, dated Sept. 13, says in part: “Today, the final shoe fell in the litigation surrounding the employment termination of a former city employee, Londi Lindell. There is no way to sugarcoat this situation and I will not insult your intelligence by trying to do so. In my almost 12 years on the City Council, this is clearly the low point. “...The city and councilmembers have withheld public comment on advice of legal counsel. As acting contrary to the advice of counsel could have jeopardized the city’s insurance coverage, this silence was unavoidable. It was particularly frustrating because we wanted to discuss this with Islanders.” For the entire letter, go to www.mi-reporter.com.

The state of Washington has some of the most stringent criminal laws with respect to providing alcohol to minors and/or knowingly providing a premises for minors to consume alcohol. In Washington, it is a gross misdemeanor, punishable up to 364 days in jail and a $5,000 fine, to permit a person who is under the age of 21 to possess or consume alcohol within one’s premises. The staff analysis goes on to state: “Even though the criminal sanctions are powerful tools at punishing and deterring underage drinking, large gatherings at which underage individuals consume alcohol still occur within the city. Students at Island Park Elementary, including Katelyn Travis, Chloe Mark, Kaela Anne Fukano, principal Dr. Nancy Loorem, Emily Rowe, fourth-grade teacher Meaghan Williams, Stirling Yeadon and Kayla Mitchell, work at the first ever farmer’s market at the school. The market will be on Mondays starting at 2 p.m. during the month on September. Got a photo you’d like to share with the Island in our “Eye on MI” feature? Garcia participated in Cycle the WAVE, a ride around the Eastside to raise awareness about domestic violence on Sept. 18. Garcia had been using a makeshift bike prior to the donation.
Fire crews from around the area responded on Friday afternoon to reports of a man stuck in a trench on Mercer Island. A man, described to be in his 40s, was working in a trench under a deck at a house located in the 4500 block of 84th Ave. S.E. While working, dirt and rocks from the hill under the deck sloughed down and trapped the man up to his waist. Crews from Mercer Island, Eastside Fire and Rescue and the Seattle Fire Department Heavy Rescue crew responded to the incident around 12:30 p.m. Mercer Island Battalion Chief Shawn Matheson told reporters that crews were able to remove the man after about an hour by cutting a hole through the deck and lifting him out. Prior to the deck cutting, firefighters gave the man a shovel to see if he could dig himself out, to no avail. Crews were unable to

for long term player development, and attend youth football games, among other activities. “The thing to remember about football, unlike pretty much any other sport, is that there isn’t a select season, said Pete Higgins, the treasurer of the football booster club. “We felt like this was an appropriate opportunity to help Coach Ogata. For head gymnastics coach Leonard Lewis, the club would pay him $500 plus a gift of $2,000 to the MIHS ASB fund for the program. In the gymnastics agreement, Lewis would be required to develop and expand the plans for the new season this winter, work with JV and varsity members to identify key skills and provide some training to the MIHS cheerleading squad, among other activities. Lewis said some aspects of the agreement still need to be ironed out, like working with the cheerleaders, because many are on the gymnastics team, and any work with them outside the season would be a violation of Washington Interscholastic Activities Association rules.
the defendant or the plaintiff. The city has also been ordered to pay a fine of more than $90,000 for violations of the Public Records Act. Mercer Island City Councilman Dan Grausz wrote a letter last week to Islanders about the conclusion of the lawsuit. It can be viewed on the Reporter Web site at www.mi-reporter.com. Previous stories written about the lawsuit can also be found online.
The agreement is contingent on the $2,000 gift from the gymnastics group to be raised and paid to the district by Dec. 31. If the funds are not raised, the agreement will be voided, as the school would not be in compliance with Title IX. “We’re kind of putting our toe in the water, said school board member Pat Braman. “There are a number of coaches who put in time out of season. This is going to be interesting to see how it works. Lewis said the gymnastics group is fundraising by working at the confession stand during football games this fall, and he doesn’t feel that there will be any issue getting the money in time. Pete Higgins, who is the treasurer for the football booster club, and the gymnastics group have staffed the concession stand for the last several seasons, and it has worked very well. The conditional approval from the MISD board requires: that the Mercer Island Classified Education Association provides consent, that it complies with the WIAA rules (23.1.1 in the WIAA Handbook), authorization by the board
that the employees’ receipt of compensation is from a third party for work involved with their coaching duties, and that there is no conflict of interest. The board also required that the funds are in place for gymnastics by Dec. 31, and that both coaches get liability insurance like other independent contractors with the district are required to have. Braman said the insurance condition was added by the board, despite an insurance clause already existing in the agreements because the board wanted it to be stronger. “Some didn’t think it was worded strongly enough, said Braman. There was also some concern from the board based on what has happened in other districts in the past. There was a WIAA investigation in the mid-2000’s into the Bellevue football program, after it was discovered that the booster club there was giving an excess of $50,000 to their head coach. While the practice of providing stipends is not unusual, Braman said they didn’t want it to be excessive. “It’s been a long process, said Lewis of the whole thing. “It’s all so legal now, to get approval to do something that used to happen all the time. The coaches, MIHS athletic director Craig Olson and Superintendent Gary Plano recently held a meeting to discuss the agreements before signing.

Noise, alcohol, drugs and trash in Town Center I wish to complain about the constant noise emanating from the North end QFC at nights on the weekend. Quite frequently, I see children and teenagers driving cars, playing music very loudly, fighting, shouting, and generally causing a disturbance, when across the street hundreds of people are trying to sleep. I’ve also seen the same kids drinking beer and smoking. I’ve also smelled marijuana being smoked as well, and once chanced a look at a marijuana pipe. How would the parents of those teenagers like it if I parked in their driveway and turned the music all the way up in my car and started making a lot of noise and started drinking beer, fighting with my friends, and then left the trash on their property? I deal with that issue every single weekend. I hope the parents of this Island will start taking responsibility for their children; otherwise, the police will be receiving a lot more calls from me. I also wish to write that the people who frequent the Noah’s Bagels store directly beneath my home are pigs. They don’t take the 10 seconds it takes to
throw away their trash in a proper receptacle if it inconveniences them in the least. Either the property owner of the business or the apartment buildings or the city need to do something about the trash situation there. John Markov

The Mercer Island High School class of ’61 had a great turnout for their 50-year reunion at the Roanoke Inn, Sept. 9. From left are Missy Martine, chairman of the reunion, Lee Miller, JoAnne Vernig, Sharon Lamb, Tom Goedel and Gretchen Boe. Missy Martine, who was the chairman of the reunion, seemed pleased with the turnout. One thing is certain; they could not have asked for better weather.

squinting at name tags and a minute or two of guessing, but soon recognition and laughter. The noise rose and fell as friends from as far back as kindergarten found each other and plunged right into reciting the same tales and adventures from yesteryear. They came from Alaska, Maine, Europe, Asia, and from just down the street. There were many who came from nearby who come to the Island often — yet it seemed that even those who came the furthest still seem to come back from time to
time. Janet Lanford, a reunion organizer who lives in Bellevue, and Jeff Palmberg of Mercer Island were squeezed among the crowd in the Roanoke backyard with Bart Perman of Kent. What did they think of how the Island has changed? “It has lost its small-town feel, Lanford said. “And there is not as much open space. Palmberg said the downtown, especially, is different. “Downtown used to be for buying groceries, but now

Joan was born in New York City on February 25, 1925. She graduated from Cathedral High School and attended City College in New York. She married Thomas Callahan in 1947 and moved to Mercer Island, WA in 1952. Joan and Tom moved to Oregon for a number of years and eventually returned to the Seattle area and back to Mercer Island in 1966 where she lived until her death. Joan was one of the founding parishioners of St. Monica’s Catholic church and was an active member of the Margaret Abel Circle of Catholic Childhood charities. Joan had a 25 year career at Farmer’s New World Life Insurance and was an avid reader, history buff and bridge player. She was always a New Yorker at heart, but couldn’t imagine living anywhere else but in the Pacific Northwest with all of her family and friends. Joan will be deeply missed by her family, daughters, Rosemary Heckeroth (David) and Eileen Conover (Marc) both of Sammamish, son Michael Callahan of Mercer Island and grandchildren, Chrissy Koskovich (Ryan), Danny Heckeroth, Matt Heckeroth and Morgan Conover. She was preceded in death by her son Jim and husband Tom. Search for spirituality blends yoga, family and Island values Author to appear at Island Books Sept. 30 By Mary L. Grady editor@mi-reporter.com
Don’t be put off by the title. In her book, “Yoga Bitch, Islander native Suzanne Morrison leads readers through her search for spirituality with a good deal of candor and humor. A product of Island schools and a daughter of Islanders Kathy and Frank Morrison Jr., the author gives a colorful and honest assessment of herself and those around her in her tumultuous journey through yoga via Bali to enlightenment. The book has become a hit and is being published in Europe as well as the United States. Morrison has recently logged thousands of miles appearing at readings and marketing events. We spoke to Morrison at a stopover in San Francisco about how her youth here and her family have shaped her life and profession and the journey she describes in her book. As a kid, did you hang out at the library, read in bed
with a flashlight or roam Island Books dreaming of being an author? All of the above. I remember my mother would take my Christmas list to Roger Page at Island Suzanne Books. He Morrison would even pick other books for me that he thought I should read. In the book, you often refer to the journal you keep. Have you always kept a journal? I started writing in a journal in the fourth grade and have ever since. I have hauled the journals I wrote beginning from age 16 on in all of my moves. The early books are in still in a box in my parents’ basement. Can you talk about how the values and expectations of your family played a role in your book? I was raised in the Catholic church, but by the time I was to be confirmed I could not
intellectually go along. But I was always interested in spirituality. Then Sept. 11 happened and everything changed. All of the sudden that spiritual journey became more important to me. I think it was a process of coming back to what I had stepped away from. My family played a huge role in how I looked at the world. We ate dinner together every night. There were four of us kids. We had very intelligent conversations around the dinner table; we would talk about what happened to us — and what was really important. My mother devised a way to get everyone to contribute with something we called “positive and negative. We would go around the table and everyone would describe something positive that happened to us during the day and one negative thing. That sort of talk and truth-telling was how I was raised. And my father, being the attorney, always wanted to know both sides of the story — the good and the bad. Were you allowed to use some of the more color-
ful language you used in the book at home? Smoke? What about living with a boyfriend? Heavens, no. Never. I only lived with my boyfriend years later. It was OK then because my mother did not want me living by myself in New York. Did you censor yourself as you went along in the book? Did you warn your family beforehand of what might be coming? The book was my attempt to tell the truth completely. I did not censor myself. I wanted to be completely honest. When it was about to be published, I lost a lot of sleep. It was harrowing to think that everyone would see what I did and thought. Now I feel great about it; it was emboldening. This was the right way to do this work. After all, the truth is what you are suffering for. What about growing up in Mercer Island influenced your approach to writing or your observations of others in the book? In elementary school, Frank Perry, a teacher, singled me out to read one of my stories in class. That was kind of a beginning for me. He always encouraged me in my writing. Another teacher, Carol Muth, had us memorize poems, some that I can
still recite. Mr. Perry told me the most important thing is to grab the readers with the first sentence. I always think of that. It was from that time that I knew I wanted to write books. What have you learned since your book has been published? What has surprised you? Most congratulate me

about the book which is great. What has surprised me the most is how people relate themselves and their own experience to the book. Much of what I have heard from the yoga community is positive, but I have learned that readers come to the topic and the book with their own ideas and expectations. As much as many as have liked the book, others do not. It is crazy trying to believe or understand what everybody thinks of the book. So you just can’t try to. One thing that is very gratifying is that several people have told me that what I wrote about yoga and my experience, is what everybody thinks, but no one dares to say out loud. What is the question that you are most asked about the book — what is the dumbest? Most people ask if the people I was with in Bali (who are in the book) have read the book. They have. (Her roommate in Bali, Jessica, remains a good friend.) The dumbest question is whether or not I really drank my own pee. (Also referred to in the book). They are incredulous. But really, after everything else I reveal in the book, I would make this up? But, yes, I did. And does she still practice yoga? Yes, she does.

Islanders head back to the pool By Megan Managan mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
For the second straight year, the Mercer Island boys water polo team is taking to the pool with a new coach. Again this fall, the team hopes that despite a new coach, they will be able to bring home another state title. Under the reign of John Jacobson, a MIHS water polo alum, the team looks and feels much the same as in years past. “Things are pretty much the same,” said the new coach. “We did a standard training camp and practice.” Jacobson is the executive director and head coach for Rain City Polo, a local club water polo group for girls and boys. After an early sea-
son loss to the CPA, the Islanders are focused on getting things going. “So far so good,” said senior captain Yashar Zafari. “We lost a lot of players, and we’re starting some new good players.” Even with a large group of new players — Jacobson said 30 guys turned out this fall — the team is strong. “I think swimming is huge,” said the coach. “A lot of our guys are yearround swimmers, and they have a great swim program at the high school, obviously. So we’re fast; we’re a fast team. Size-wise, we’ve got some good size on our team — can’t really complain. Physically, they have all the tools to compete.” Another captain, senior Sam Bender, said the team is putting in hard work to
make its goals this season. “It’s been a lot of fun,” said Bender. “Hard work, but fun hard work.” Bender and Zafari are joined by captains Kenny Trowbridge and Josh Norden this fall. As in many years past, the team’s major goal is winning state, which it has for the past 11 years. “We only have one goal and that’s to win the state championship. It’s kind of the norm for Mercer Island. That’s what I was used to. The very first day of practice, we sat them down and figured out what it takes to make that goal,” said Jacobson. In order to make it happen, Bender said he thinks it’s key for the team to work as a unit. “I think we have to be willing to work together on things,” he said. Zafari echoed those thoughts. “I’d like to see us work well together as a team and bring the new players together,” said the captain.
WE ARE NOT A GIMMICK. We are not going to transform your body in 24 hours, Or promise you results in 6 minutes or less. What we are going to do is change how you move, Change how you eat, And change how you think, All to change how you feel.

We are a lot of things, but we are certainly not a gimmick. And we think it’s time you found out why.

In high school swimming, scoring points are awarded to the top five swimmers in a meet. It’s not always necessary, given the depth of a team, to win every event, or even any at all to win the meet. Mercer Island girls swimming head coach Chauntelle Johnson knows this well, having won last year’s state title with just four individual wins. In order to get to the top again this season, which the Islanders have set their sights on, the team will once again have to not only dominate in KingCo, but in non-league matches. “Our girls who are going to be on that border line between qualifying for the state meet, or not qualifying — we have to get them over that hump to qualifying,” said Johnson on keys to the season. “For us, our strength is our depth, and we have to use that to our advantage and use every single person to get to that point. Like I said before, it’s not just about winning events, for the girls on our team
who are capable of winning events at state, but it’s going to take the girls who are going to be in the 9-16th place at the state meet that we need to help us get over the hump. We’re going to use that to our advantage, it’s something other teams in the state don’t have and that’s the thing that’s continued to set us apart.” Helping the team in the pool this fall are captains Kiersten Picardo, Cecilia Tremaine Nelson, Vee Vee Wang and Madeleine Chandless. “It’s going really good,” said Picardo. “We’re looking really strong so far.” The team’s major goal is to bring home the state title for the third year in a row, and to go undefeated during the season. “We talked about goals, and for a team that’s won state for the last two years, obviously that’s a goal again. I think that it’s well within their reach — they just have to continue to work hard,” said the coach. “The reality is other teams get better every year, and in order for us to be at the top, we have to be at the top, too. I think
the girls understand that. They don’t take it lightly; they don’t feel entitled to win because they won in the past. It’s like, OK, we have a target on our backs.” To get that perfect season record, the team has to get back opponents like Skyline, which the Islanders faced on Tuesday, after Reporter deadline, Bainbridge and 2A KingCo opponent Interlake. All four captains said Skyline was going to be the meet of the year, after last year’s meet went to the last race, with the Islanders losing by just four points. For Johnson, she said Bainbridge’s program was on a big upswing, which should propel the team into the top rankings. The swimmers know it will take hard work to get to their final goal — state — not just in meets, but every day of the season. “Chauntelle always stresses working hard in practice and how it adds up,” said Wang, who swims the individual medleys. “This group is just more mature than last year. There are a lot returning from last year. The kids that were on the district and state team were really young, so for them to be a year older, even though they are really young — they kind of know what is going on and they know what to expect from the season. Some of our kids that maybe didn’t qualify for districts and state last year know now what it takes to get to that level, so they are already trying to put in the work to get themselves to that level, which is great,” said Johnson. She listed the team’s strength, besides depth, as focus. It’s a trait the girls have had from day one, Johnson said.

get out of hand. It would have been nice if we could have not gotten penalized on those big plays — we had two 90-yard plays get called back, which is tough to withstand. I give our players credit for continuing to compete.” What the Rebels lacked, the Islanders made up for, competing and controlling at the line of scrimmage, especially in the second half. “The o-line, those guys were awesome all night. They dominated the line of scrimmage, and we were able to control the ball in the second half. Those guys, our receivers, made big plays — and our defense, they kept down the turnover for us, which was really big. I’m just really excited for the guys,” said Ogata. After a first half when things weren’t quite breaking their way, the Mercer Island football team roared back to a 47-24 win over Juanita, Friday night. In the first home game of the season, the Islanders struggled to contain the Rebels early on, but found what they were looking for offensively after the break. The Rebels had an advantage during the first half of the game at Mercer Island High School on Friday. Juanita strung together a solid drive, earning the first points of the night with 6:06 left in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead, but penalties and lost chances would change the game for Juanita, and Mercer Island took advantage. Penalty flags flew on the
field throughout the game, sparking Mercer Island head coach Brett Ogata to say it is something the team plans to work on in practice this week, as did Juanita head coach Shaun Tarantola. The Rebels lost two touchdown runs, of almost 90 yards each, because of penalties. “We are definitely going to work on it — we had a lot of penalties last week, and later in the year that’s going to catch up to us,” said Ogata. “We need to work on it.” Across the field, the Rebels faced more penalties, which stymied their offense. “Penalties hurt us throughout the game. We had two touchdowns called back because of penalties early in the game,” said Tarantola. “We just weren’t able to get in a rhythm. Penalties played a major role in us letting it

the game. “There aren’t many high school players who are going to make that throw on the run for 60 yards in stride. In the second quarter, Mercer Island held off the Juanita defensive line to allow Connor Bernal a run with 8:24 left in the quarter for a 14-6 ball game. After repossessing the ball, the Rebels continued to drive, connecting for a touchdown pass late in the quarter to change the score to 14-12. On the kickoff return, Mercer Island fumbled the ball and the Rebels regained possession at the 26-yard line. A quick drive to the goal line gave the Rebels another touchdown, just a minute after the one before, giving the visiting team the lead, 18-14. To even things out, kicker Alex Wood came out to make a field goal with four seconds on the clock, putting the score at 18-17 for Juanita. After the break, Juanita began on their own 20-yard line, but Mercer Island intercepted the ball with 10:23 on the clock and took over at the 25. The Islanders’ drive was stymied by Juanita, which regained possession on the 40 and quickly burned through four downs to give
the Islanders another chance. “Second half, we came out and got the turnovers that we needed and really got the momentum of the game, and used that momentum that was really the difference. In the first half, things weren’t looking great, but you just have to stay in the game, said Ogata. This time Wood returned to the field, making a 29-yard field goal and giving the lead back to Mercer Island with a 20-18 score. In the second half, Mercer Island found its rhythm and slowed Juanita enough to find the end zone repeatedly. Senior Phil Frazier ran for a touchdown at the end of the third quarter to make it 27-18, and Stefanchik caught another long pass from Lindquist, this time 55 yards, to score for a 34-18 game. The Islanders scored again in the beginning of the fourth quarter, after Frazier ran the ball in, followed by an interception with 10:16 on the clock to set up another touchdown. This time Frazier ran it in, scoring the final points of the night for Mercer Island. Juanita made moves to the end zone and scored with just under five minutes left to play for the 47-24 score. The Islanders will travel to Interlake next Friday, and the Rebels will host Sammamish. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

people live there. It changes the dynamic,” he said. It feels almost urban, he continued. But that is a not a bad thing. Perman shook his head. “It feels too crowded now.” The three did agree that the community does more together with Summer Celebration, Mostly Music in the Park and the Easter egg hunt. All those bring people into the Town Center, which is different than before, Palmberg pointed out. “When we were growing up, there was not much to do around town,” they said. Scott McLaughlin, who now lives in Auburn, noted that when he was growing up, the Island was more open, unrestricted. “When I was a kid, you could walk a long way south along the shore on East Mercer Way — now you cannot because the land is all taken up — there are fences and walls,” he said. In the fourth grade, McLaughlin, obsessed with Evel Kneivel, the motorcycle
stuntman, got eight of his friends to lie side-by-side on the gravel driveway of his house after a Cub Scouts meeting one day. His mother had already gone inside the house, he explained. After a roaring start from up the hill, he almost made a clean leap, but skinned the belly of his friend, Jeff Yutani. “We had fun,” he said simply. Among others, there were nostalgic sighs about pinball at the bowling alley — long gone now. Ed Flinchem, the class valedictorian, was accompanied to the reunion by his boyfriend, who cheerfully introduced himself as such. Flinchem said of course, he did not let anyone know the way he felt then. He just knew he was different. “I was in love with all the men,” he said. He remembered living in Mercerdale and later near Ellis Pond. “We rode our bikes everywhere.” AHe later went on to work for the software company Tegic, where he was part of the team that designed the T9 predictive text software for cell phones. A half dozen men fondly

Above, a photo of the old high school commons, nicknamed ‘the mushroom.’ At right, a drawing by Jeff Palmberg for his reunion with a nod to the movie, ‘The Breakfast Club,’ about a group of five students at fictional suburban high school in the early 1980s who end up in detention together. While not complete strangers, the five teenagers are each from a different clique or social group. They become friends. recalled a spot somewhere north behind the school dubbed the “boiler room.” It was a place where kids hung out to smoke cigarettes and pot. Lanford and classmate Andy Adolfson remembered when they and several other students worked at Denny’s, on the old Sunset Highway where Aljoya is now. The place was open 24 hours. Some students even worked the graveyard shift. When the bars closed in Seattle, people would stop here on the their way home — there would be bad behavior, Lanford remembered. Adolfson also remembered practicing the “electric slide” at a disco called “Tonight’s the Night,” in the build-
ing where the True Value Hardware store is now. There was Styrofoam on the ceiling. Adolfson recalled how somehow, people stuck forks in it. Lori Glatz Scott still lives on the Island and has two seniors at Mercer Island High School. She noted another curious change on that has taken place on the Island. On Friday, she and other parents attended the fall sports assembly at the school. She marveled at the fact that parents regularly go to such events at the school. “There is even a special section just for the parents,” she said. “I would have been horrified if my parents had come.” Mike Tomkins, now of
Duvall, and Greg Komenda, of Issaquah, both Islander football players, remembered how people fell into groups: athletes, brainy types and such. But the most important distinction was where a student went to junior high school. Were you a North or a South? The North Jr. High (which ironically, is really at the Island’s center, where Youth Theatre Northwest is now) or South Mercer, which is where Islander Middle School is now. Asked what he thought of
the changes on the Island, Tomkins did not hesitate. “It is just the same.” Jimmy Masocro lives in Atlanta with his family and works for Delta Airlines. He was chilled on this pre-fall night — being more used to the warm, humid evenings in the South. He still comes to the Island to visit his mother, and when he does, stays in his childhood bedroom. “The change on the Island is incredible,” he said. “It is well-designed, but it is a totally different place.”
