Firefighter pancake breakfast for breast cancer awareness Mercer Island Firefighters Union Local 1762 is hosting a pancake breakfast at Station 91, 3030 78th Ave S.E., from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 1, with a suggested donation of $5. The Mercer Island Firefighters Union is partnering up with the Susan G. Komen Foundation this year for breast cancer awareness. Their campaign is called “Passionately Pink for the Cure.” Firefighters unions all over the United States are participating. “IAFF passed a resolution in 2010 to make this one of their causes in October since it’s breast cancer awareness month,” said Ray Austin, representing the Mercer Island IAFF. Island firefighters are wearing pink ribbon lapel pins behind the IAFF symbol. The firefighters will be selling Mercer Island Firefighter T-shirts for $20, available in pink and white. All proceeds from the event and T-shirt sales will benefit the Komen Foundation. Community members can also donate directly through the department’s fundraising web page: www.info-komen. org/goto/Mercer or by cash or check by mailing donations to Mercer Island Firefighters, P.O. YFS thrift store is ‘gold mine’ for city By Linda Ball lball@mi-reporter.com

If you haven’t visited the Youth and Family Services Thrift Store lately, you will notice some changes, particularly upstairs. “We’re trying to look more like a boutique with thrift store prices,” said Logan Ens, the store’s assistant coordinator. The store is also seeking another full-time staff person. Right now there are three full-time employees; Ens, coordinator Suzanne Philen, and Don Rupp, the merchandising representative. All three are city employees with Youth and Family Services. The new position, production coordinator, will primarily be in charge of intake, or new donations,

of which the thrift store receives an astonishing average of seven tons a day. The production coordinator will also track average price points. Ens said usually only two people are available to sort through all of the intake. Some of it has to be recycled and some items are garbage, but most of what they take in are really nice, gently used items. The store also maintains 15 to 20 work study students, paid by YFS; YFS is then reimbursed 60 percent by various state and federal programs for those workers. But now, with school back in session, the store has fewer of those employees. The city’s finance director, Chip Corder, said the Thrift Store is a “little gold mine.” “We’re overwhelmed — they

have more stuff than they can handle,” Corder said. Corder also mentioned the loss of volunteers, including senior citizens ‘who just can’t do it anymore’. He also said they need more square footage, but expansion costs money. “Sometimes, you have to spend money to make money,” he said. “There’s an opportunity to make money here. Since the recession, the store has really taken off.” Ens said with more donations coming in, they have to be creative in what they display. “If we have 20 items come in, and five of them are $30 items, we’ll display those before the $10 items,” Ens said. Corder said the city’s general fund has typically subsidized YFS $465,000 per year. Going forward, starting with 2011, that subsidy has been reduced to $320,000. Corder said the store is exceeding its expectations, making $727,000 in 2009, $825,000 in 2010, and

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has told its wholesale customers, including Mercer Island and several other larger users, to expect a 34.7 percent increase in the price of water it purchases for its residents and businesses in 2012. The City of Mercer Island is in the process of determining what Island homeowners and businesses will pay in the form of higher rates to offset that increase. If that entire amount were passed through to Island customers, city staff estimate that Island homes and businesses could pay an estimated 12 to 14 percent

WATER | FROM 1 more for water. However, the Utility Board has yet to make a recommendation to the City Council. The Council met with the citizen-staffed board on Sept. 6 to discuss SPU’s rate changes. The city had anticipated a big increase, said city manager Rich Conrad, but had hoped to keep the increase for individual ratepayers to less than 10 percent. The components that make up the amount of money charged to both wholesale and retail customers are long and complex. The SPU rate increase is primarily due to three factors. First, there has been a decline in water use over the past few years due to conservation and less growth in the region. Fewer gallons of water sold means less water to spread the costs of maintaining and transporting the water. Next, there has been simply less revenue to SPU, whose costs are largely fixed and do not adjust given consumption changes. An estimated 10.5 percent of the expected increase is the result of forecasted declines in demand. SPU believes

demand will continue to fall for the foreseeable future at a rate of about 1.6 percent per year. Finally, a 13 percent discount given to Mercer Island (and some other cities that signed with SPU in 2003) will expire next year. This contract provision established a transition period from 2003 through 2011, during which wholesale customers not experiencing significant growth in consumption, like Mercer Island, received a rate discount. An “east sub-regional” surcharge set by SPU for the delivery of water via pipeline is set to increase by over 5 percent for the coming rate period. The area served by transmission water lines bringing water to Mercer Island from the Eastside are called the “East sub-region.” The sub-regional surcharge is based on the costs of operating and repairing sections of the this part of the transmission system. housing development on the Island also share in the cost. The allocation of costs is based on actual metered usage and the actual length of pipeline required by each wholesale customer served by the MISL. On average, about 800 million gallons of water are purchased annually. The water is stored in two fourmillion gallon reservoirs here for domestic use and fire protection. The water is distributed through 122 miles of 4-inch to 30-inch waterlines and is delivered to customers through approximately 7,300 water meters. The water from SPU is the only water supply available to the city. The city is no longer a member of the Cascade Water Alliance, which supplies several, but not all, Eastside towns and cities. The Cascade Water Alliance was formed in 1998. Mercer Island was its second member. Cascade was the result of a concerted effort to develop independent water supplies for suburban cities and water districts. However, according to city work papers, Cascade adopted a new interlocal agreement in 2002 that

Cascade Water Alliance on the belief that SPU’s water system represented a more certain supply for the City of Mercer Island’s low-growth needs at lower long-term cost increases for its utility customers. The City Council agreed, and in June 2003 approved a new supply contract with the City of Seattle. Eleven wholesale water customers, including Mercer Island,

which had 30-year contracts, signed 60-year water service agreements with Seattle. On Oct. 3, the City Council will hear about and vote on the surplus left from the construction of the sewer lake line project. The money left over is expected to be allocated to several uses and could include an amount to offset water rate increases, said Conrad.

After reading the story in the Reporter’s Aug. 31 issue about the Daybreak Middle School marching band in Battle Ground, Wash., Islander Bruce Florsheim wanted to help the fledgling band. So, he sent them an unsolicited donation. All three of Florsheim’s kids grew up on Mercer Island and were in the Mercer Island High School marching band. “I want to make that experience available to the kids in Battle Ground, Florsheim said. The band leader at Daybreak Middle School, George Izzet, was shopping for uniforms for the band in 2010, and soon realized it was too expensive to buy new ones, as a single complete new uniform would cost at least $350. into one system," Michaud said. SR-520 will be the first bridge in the state with allelectronic tolling, which allows tolls to be collected at highway speeds. The system is expected to track and handle more than 100,000 daily transactions on the SR-520 bridge. The tolls will be captured either through Good To Go windshield stickers or through license-recognition photos, which automatically generate a bill that is mailed to drivers. Dye said a delayed start date for SR-520 tolling will not affect planned toll charges, which are used to pay off the 30- and 40-year bonds for construction of the new bridge. With a delayed start, bond repayments will extend to a few months at the end of the bond period. Tolling on SR-520 is expected to raise $1 billion overall toward the $4.65 billion SR-520 bridge replacement and HOV program, which includes 12.8 miles of safety and mobility improvements from Interstate 5 in Seattle to SR-202 in Redmond. The project contains a $2 billion budget shortfall.

I-405 shutdown postponed until this Saturday Wet weather last weekend postponed the closure of I-405 in Bellevue until next weekend, Oct. 1. The wet weather meant some work could not be completed. “Crews are putting down the final layer of pavement and permanent striping on I-405 in Bellevue, said Lorena Eng, WSDOT regional administrator. “We want to make sure our work is perfect, and we can’t afford to take risks with the weather. Construction planned for this coming weekend on I-405 includes restriping all the lanes of northbound I-405 and all the ramps to and from I-405. With a rainy forecast, WSDOT contractor crews couldn’t guarantee that the striping would be crystal clear. Crystal clear striping is vital to the safety of drivers on this busy freeway. “We are fundamentally changing the way people drive I-405, and we made the safest decision we could, said Seema Javeri,

Alaskan Way Viaduct to close for nine days On Friday, Oct. 21, the State Route 99-Alaskan Way Viaduct will close for nine days. The nine-day closure of the viaduct will be the longest ever for a Seattlearea highway. With one of the major north-south highways through Seattle closed, drivers from across the Puget Sound region will be significantly affected by the closure. Even drivers who commute from Lynnwood and Bellevue will see increased congestion as the nearly 110,000 vehicles that use the viaduct daily look for somewhere else to go. Drivers are strongly encouraged to plan ahead, get familiar with commute options and allow extra time to reach their destinations. For those who have a choice, options such as vanpooling, carpooling or other forms of transportation can help avoid long delays. WSDOT finished build-

ing the first of two sideby-side bridges that will replace the viaduct’s southern mile. On Oct. 21, contractors will close SR-99 and begin demolishing part of the viaduct. When SR-99 reopens to traffic on Oct. 31, both directions through SODO will travel on the new bridge. Workers can then finish demolishing the viaduct’s southern mile without disrupting traffic on SR-99, and begin building the second new bridge. t is something we take for granted — clean, abundant water. Being bundled in with other bills we pay for trash, phone and cable, it is likely we don’t pay too much attention to what we are paying — unless we have been watering the lawn. But now, along with everything else, the cost of that water is about to take a significant hike. The city and residents will face a startling increase percentage-wise when the City of Mercer Island raises its water rates to meet a one-third increase in the cost of water it buys from the City of Seattle. We have been warned — the city has made it plain that an increase in water rates was coming. The city wants to keep the increase at under 10 percent for Island homes and businesses, but in reality the increase needed pencils out to be 12 percent or more. Seattle Public Utilities supplies water to Mercer Island and other communities from its huge system of reservoirs and distribution that presently services some 1.4 million customers. Water, like clean air and fossil fuel, is a precious and shrinking resource. But it is not the lack of water supplies or a need for new capacity that is driving the increase. Ironically, it is conservation and the economy. Homes and businesses use less. Lower demand has significantly cut into the revenue needed to keep the system operating. The city wisely entered into a 60-year contract in 2003, to ensure that city residents have a protected source of water from an established system with water rights in place. However, that certainty comes with a price; when costs go up, the city has little control over what they will be charged. he latest demonstration at Rep. Dave Reichert’s office on Tuesday by a union group called “Save the Postal Service” is about saving jobs. Due to moves by more efficient and nimble competitors, the post office is suffering. Fingers are pointed at Congress — an obvious but rather convenient target. If the post office was a business, it would have shut down offices, eliminated Saturday delivery, and most importantly, raised its rates long ago. Just like clean water, we have taken the six-day delivery of mail at a low cost for granted. But it is the falling demand for mail service that is the real driver behind its problems.

‘Ironically, it is conservation driving much of the increase in water rates.’

TALK

I was dismayed to read the letter to the editor by Pauline Reiter, criticizing the Reporter’s coverage of the high school sports teams at the expense of the cross country team. At the beginning of each sports season, it has been the practice of the Reporter to profile two of the high school sports teams each week with a picture of the captains and an article highlighting the goals and expectations of the team. Last week, the Reporter profiled cross country and boys golf. Had Ms. Reiter taken the time to review the photo and read the article, she would have noted that two of the cross country captains are also National Merit semifinalists! As a cross country parent the past four years, I am proud to say that the 130-member cross country team is comprised of many gifted athletes and is a model of leadership and academic scholarship. Coaches Erica Hill and Tony Scaringi must be thanked for building this wonderful “family” of athletic scholars. Katharine Brindley

crossing the street safely, looking both ways, before getting on the bus. Then what do they do when they get on the bus? The drivers sang and rapped, “Put your backpack on your lap, sit bottom to bottom, back to back, meaning keeping their bottom to the bottom of the seat, and their back upright to the back of the seat, demonstrating while performing the song. The singers were Sandy Yollin, Dan Stednick, Anderson, who had some great moves; Pam McCartney, all decked out in a pink sequin hat; and Dana Levy. All five took turns at the lead, and were very entertaining in all three numbers — two of them original songs. To close the show, the drivers on the Lakeridge routes all came out for an introduction and a bow. With the first performance a success, they will repeat the show on Oct. 14 at West Mercer Elementary, then at Island Park Elementary, Oct. 25.

ails the education system. What I do know is that people, from individuals to large groups, can and do make a difference. In fact, the system is rife with people who make a difference, everyday, in the lives of our children. As with anything, the first step in solving something is to know the problem fully, to see it from every angle, and to get informed from the most trusted sources available. The problems with education are complex beyond measure. Any solutions must consist of myriad solutions, from various perspectives. Linda DarlingHammond is no carpet-bagger. Currently working out of Stanford University, she is probably the single most important educational voice of our time. She is our generation’s John Dewey. Her work is well-reasoned, wellregarded and extremely well-researched. She was Obama’s second choice to be the secretary of education. Darling-Hammond wrote an encyclopedic book on the cur-

UNIFORMS | FROM 3 rent state of education called “The Flat World and Education: How America’s Commitment to Equity Will Determine Our Future.” If you really want to know what is wrong with education and what to do about it from a leader in the field, read this book. She makes no attempt to simplify the problem or offer simplistic solutions to make our education system better. However, she offers complex and far-reaching knowledge — knowledge that will empower us as a community to work for better solutions for our children’s schools. Just, fair and equitable education reform does not come easy and is not simple. Individually, we can do something. We can get informed. Then we can talk to others about what we know and create networks.

envelope in the mail with a return address from Mercer Island, and had a feeling it was something positive. “The first thing I noticed was a copy of the article,” Izzet said. There was a card inside with Florsheim’s name on it that said, “Your band looks great. Here’s a contribution for your uniform fund. Use it to help pay Mercer Island (High School) or to add patches or new lettering over the Mercer Island (logo) ... All the best! Bruce Florsheim.” Izzet said they are keeping the “MI” on the front of the uniforms because it’s too expensive to remove them, and also because it can be read as “IM” — band members will chant “I AM Daybreak” when

they march. “Daybreak Dragons” has been patched over Mercer Island on the back. New overlays would be about $90 each, but patches with the Daybreak identification for the back would be just $30 for each overlay, so that’s what they’re buying. The unsolicited check from Florsheim amounted to an unplanned kickoff to fund the drive for the patches. The initial goal, Izzet said, is $2,400 to buy 80. Donations may be made out to “Daybreak Band Boosters” and sent to George Izzet, Daybreak Middle School, P.O. Box 200, Battle Ground, Wash., 98604. “I’m glad I was in a position to help them out a little bit,” Florsheim said.

Islanders prepare for volleyball showdown

FOOTBALL | MERCER ISLAND 41, INTERLAKE 7

By Megan Managan mmanagan@mi-reporter.com

On Thursday evening one team is going to leave the Mercer Island High School gym with the first league loss of the year. Whether it will be Mercer Island or Mount Si remains to be seen, but for the moment, both teams are enjoying a perfect start to the KingCo season. “We are definitely playing really well,” said head coach Susan McKay. “The biggest thing for me that I am seeing is improvement at every practice and game.” The Islanders started off with a 7-0 record in KingCo, and are 7-1 overall. Higgins leads in win over Interlake By Megan Managan mmanagan@mi-reporter.com

In his first start of the season, Brian Higgins helped lead Mercer Island in a win over Interlake on Friday evening. In the 41-7 rout over the Saints, Higgins earned his first touchdown points of the season during the first quarter. Head coach Brett Ogata said Higgins got the start because senior Jeff Lindquist was a little banged up. Ogata said Higgins took all the reps during practice this week, and played a great

game. “Jeff was actually a little banged up and we really just wanted to let him rest a little bit and take it easy,” said Ogata. “Also, Brian took all the reps this week, so he was more ready for the game than Jeff was.” Ogata said one of the team’s biggest goals going into the game against the Saints was not letting down after last week’s big win over Juanita. “We’ve concentrated on trying to get more execution offensively and defensively,

and that really came out tonight. The biggest thing after the win last week was not to have a letdown for our guys. I was really proud of them,” said the coach. The Islanders’ defense shone from the first play of the game, when the defensive line held Interlake to no gains on their first possession. Taking over, Higgins passed for a touchdown with 6:39 left in the first quarter to make it a 7-0 game.

Connor Gullstad had four steals, while Keoni Ogawa

recorded one steal during the game. Earlier in the week, the Islanders fell to Roosevelt, 12-9, with Lacrampe scoring three goals for the team. This week the Islanders take on Bellevue on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Mercer Island Country Club beginning at 7:45 p.m.

FOOTBALL | FROM 14 It was followed by a 6-yard field goal by kicker Alex Wood to make it 10-0 at the end of the first. Going into the second quarter, Lindquist came in for a few plays, throwing to Phil Frazier with 9:03 on the clock to make it a 17-0 game. On the Islanders’ next possession, Connor Bernal made a 75-yard touchdown run to increase Mercer Island’s lead to 24. Ogata said the Islanders’ defense had a strong night, evident by the team’s ability to hold back Interlake all night. He said their major goal coming into the game was to slow Interlake’s Jordan Todd, one of the top running backs in the conference. “The defense really came out and were really ready to go. After practice I was really excited, and Coach Keck did a great job getting them ready. They have probably the best running back in the

league, No. 22, and our goal was really just to stop him and make someone else run the ball,” said Ogata. After halftime, just under a minute into the quarter, Risley Lesko made his own touchdown run to increase the lead to 31-0. Higgins followed the play with a run into the end zone for 38 unanswered points on the board for Mercer Island. In the fourth quarter, Alex Wood made his second field goal of the night for 41 points. Interlake ran the ball in with 9:24 on the clock, to score their first points of the night for a 41-7 final score. The Islanders will host the reigning 3A state champions, Bellevue, on Friday, Sept. 30. “No, we’ll be ready. It’s another game. It’s an important game, but obviously now they are all important. Islander’s book chronicles life and football at Colorado Longtime Mercer Island resident Dick Taylor has written a book about his football college years at the University of Colorado. A successful businessman, husband, father and grandfather he has written a book titled “A Chip Off The Old Buffalo.” A star player in his hometown of Pueblo, he was recruited by a number of colleges but none more than Colorado University (CU). That year, 1961, CU was Big Eight Champion, defeated the Oklahoma Sooners, went to the Orange Bowl and was ranked seventh in the nation. Not long after the Orange Bowl, the head coach, Sonny Grandelius, and all of the assistant coaches were fired by the administration for paying players more than allowed by the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). More than 40 players were removed or suspended, and the program was placed on probation for two years and banned from TV for the same period. Taylor, like his fellow players, entered the program with lit-

tle understanding of just how difficult the situation happened to be. He believes that hard work and enthusiasm will provide all that is necessary. He writes the story as if you are living it; the racism, the clashes with the coaches and the turbulent ’60s. The book is an easy read that sheds light on that period of time and explains much as to why the ’60s were such a conflicted time. Dick Taylor is highly critical of the way the coaches mismanage the program, but he is just as critical of his own shortcomings during his time at CU. It is a refreshingly candid look at much that went on in the world of sports throughout the era. You can purchase the book locally at Island Books in downtown Mercer Island or order at www.dicktay44. com, Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.

MICEC offers open gym for special needs kids The Mercer Island Community and Events Center is now offering a special needs open play time. The new drop-in gym program is for special needs children and teens ages 5 through 15, and is a chance for kids to play at the facility, while giving families and friends the chance to meet and have fun. The open play time will be held every other Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the MICEC gym. The open gym is on a drop-in basis only, and for Mercer Island residents the fee is $3.25. For non-residents it’s $4.50. The program is not staffed, so parent and caregiver supervision is required. The MICEC is located at 8236 S.E. 24th Street. To learn more, visit www.mercergov.org/ccmv.

Islanders offer expertise on how to get published

By Rebecca Mar rmar@mi-reporter.com

Writers from as far away as Portland congregated at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center for a publishing salon on Sunday afternoon. Some were published authors, but most had works in progress: a memoir of growing up on a farm in Enumclaw, an illustrated children’s book, a biography set in Africa. They came to learn both tips and tricks of the publishing industry from literary agent Sharlene Martin and editor Anthony Flacco, of MartinLiteraryManagement, based on Mercer Island. “There is no one doing what we are doing now, which is to tell you the inside track on what’s going on in the publishing world,” said Martin. Martin, who established Martin Literary Management in 2003 after working in tele-

vision and film, is all about mainstream commercial publishing: the kind of books you find in the library, the kind of books where you are paid in advance and earn royalties, she said. The agent is currently representing Gaby Rodriguez, the 17-year-old Toppenish, Wash., student who made headlines in April with her senior project, a social experiment of pretending to be pregnant. Martin sold the book, “The Pregnancy Test,” to Simon and Schuster as a sixfigure deal. It will be released in January of 2012. The story was also sold to the Lifetime Movie Network, and filming will begin in October. “There’s an example of a young Washington state student whose life has been incredibly changed,” said Martin. “Now, for the first time in her life, she is now really financially independent.” Martin’s passion is nonfiction. She employs two agents who represent other genres: Bree Ogden, an agent for children’s and young adults’ books, as well as graphic novels, and Kate Folkers, who represents fiction. She also works with 12 ghostwriters. The majority of Martin’s clients are first-time authors.

She has 150 clients in total. “I knew that I loved working with writers,” she said. “What I wanted to do is combine that to serve my talents and give new and upcoming writers an opportunity.” “I’m always looking for good writers who have more than one book in them,” she said. How does an author make money? Martin gave a stepby-step overview of the process, which begins with receiving an advance, then getting paid in three installments at the time of contract, then delivery and acceptance, and finally, on publication. “So much of what gets published is based on trends and people in the publishing world just connecting with material ... Sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason,” said Martin. The couple stressed the importance of the query letter as the “most important thing you’ll ever do.” “If you don’t get me at hello,” she said, “then I’m not interested in reading on.” “Learning how to position your work as a product is one of the most important things a writer can do in terms of their publication,” Flacco said. The couple moved to Mercer Island six months ago. They run their business out

ur focus is advocating for the business owner who has reached the time in life where it makes sense to consider selling the business and retiring. He or she needs objective and skilled advice. of their home. Martin travels to New York every couple of months to meet with editors. She just returned from L.A., where she spends a week each month on business. Martin and Flacco proposed meeting again next month and making the publishing salon a regular event: the afternoon of every last Sunday, at the community center, if there was enough interest. There was a show of hands from nearly everyone in the room, expressing their approval. Do you have any Mercer Island clients? Not yet. I’d love to have some. What do you think of Mercer Island? I love it. My daughter just got married ... our son-inlaw was born and raised here (they live here). That was one reason why we wanted to come. Mercer Island is the perfect blend of island living and being close to a big city, and the added bonus of not having to deal with a ferry system. We can’t imagine being anywhere else.

Islanders Anthony Flacco and Sharlene Martin show their own published book.

What would you say is your greatest challenge as a literary agent? I think the challenge really is the changing of the industry — that there are so many changes that are happening now in publishing, a lot of it due to the economy, and a lot of it just because of the Internet, that there are very few rules any more. It’s changing daily … just keeping up with the changing, and making sure my clients are being well served.

your greatest successes as an agent? I love when I’m passionate about a book, and its authors — I love being able to make their dreams come true. What I love about my work, is that every day is filled with possibilities and every day I’m able to think about how I can affect someone’s life, and really change their life in an amazing way. So, you know, seeing an author who after trying for several years gets published, or having someone make a New York Times bestseller list, or adapting their book for TV or a movie.

What have been some of

What books have most

inspired you? “Notes Left Behind,” about Elena Desserich, who at the age of 6 died from a brain tumor. That inspired me tremendously ... All the money from sales goes to pediatric cancer research. As a result of the book deal — getting a book deal, (we are closer to) finding a cure for pediatric cancer. I’m really proud of that. Martin and Flacco are the authors of “Publish Your Nonfiction Book: Strategies for Learning the Industry, Selling Your Book, and Building a Successful Career.” For more, go to www.martinliterarymanagement.com.
