Marysville remembers Juan Mendoza BY KIRK BOXLEITNER kboxleitner@marysvilleglobe.com

MARYSVILLE — The Marysville community has rallied around the family of Juan Mendoza, the 16-yearold Marysville Getchell High School junior who lost his life on Oct. 24 in a car accident. A student-led memorial and celebration of Mendoza’s life for his friends and family, as well as for Marysville School District staff and others who wish to attend, will commence on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m in the Marysville Getchell High School gymnasium.

“There are many needs for this family, and many students, staff and the community — including the Tulalip Tribes, Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring and his family, the Marysville Rotary, Olive Garden and Cristiano’s Pizza, to name a few — have stepped up to fill those needs, said Jodi Runyon, executive assistant to the superintendent of the Marysville School District, who also extended her thanks to Wendy Messarina, the MSD ELL Spanish/multilingual parent community liaison, for working closely with Mendoza’s family to attend to their needs. Runyon and Messarina noted that

a memorial fund has been set up at HomeStreet Bank, and is accepting cash and checks for the time being. “You can either stop by the bank, at 1238 State Ave., or mark an envelope for the ‘Juan Mendoza Memorial Fund’ and drop it in the night-drop, said Messarina, who added that the account number is 536-922-1111. Bill Brubaker, president of the Marysville Youth Soccer Club, expressed his sympathies not only for Mendoza’s family, but also for Lars Kundu and Andy Vavrousek, the other SEE MENDOZA, PAGE 2

MARYSVILLE — The merchants of Marysville’s Third Street once again opened their doors to miniature ghosts, ghouls and goblins, along with an assortment of other characters, during their annual trick-ortreat event on the afternoon of Oct. 31, Halloween Monday. Cole Cannon, a 5-year-old Batman in bright blue, was surprised to see a much older Batman in black waiting for him in the doorway of Finders Keepers Furnishings, as Kip Goovee handed the young visitor a fistful of candy. “I was Elvis last year, but the kids didn’t know who that was, said Goovee, who’s taken part in Third Street’s trick-or-treat for the past five years. “This is one of the best turnouts we’ve had. It feels good to see these families smile. It’s nice to give back to the community. Us mom-and-pop stores hang together, but we have a lot of support from the locals. Isabeau Prettyman, a 4-year-old fairy, and her brother Bishop, a 6-year-old pirate, took a time-out in the middle of the hour-long trick-or-treat to count the candy they’d col-

lected so far. Bishop’s favorite candies are 3 Musketeers bars, which are Isabeau’s least favorite, as she prefers M&M’S. “This is our first trickor-treat in Marysville, said Blake Prettyman, Isabeau and Bishop’s dad, who recently moved his family from Everett. “We didn’t have anything like this in Everett. It’s nice how small and contained it is, with the privately owned businesses doing it. “This is my favorite time ever, said Gavin Deese, a 4-year-old Dracula, after hitting up the Carabinieri Bar drive-through espresso stand for goodies with his big brother, 10-year-old pro wrestler Skylor. “I like getting caramel and suckers, but I hate candy corn, Skylor Deese said.

two Marysville Getchell High School students who were injured in the same accident. “It appears the two injured boys will recover, but Lars and Andy will have a tough road ahead and require a great deal of support, Brubaker said. “Juan, the young boy that we lost, has been a pillar in the soccer community. He had played for our high school and was playing select soccer for Legacy. He would have been a strong leader on the soccer team for Getchell this coming spring. He was a certified referee and was wellrespected by fellow officials, even though he had only been a referee a short time. In a moment, it was taken away from him and all of us that knew him. On Oct. 29 and 30, the Marysville Youth Soccer Club raised more than $3,500 for Mendoza’s family, to help them with their expenses. “We’d hoped that, by donating all of the proceeds from our concessions at the soccer fields, we could share a few hundred dollars with the family, Brubaker said. “What I learned was

everyone is wearing such stylish outfits, said Darilee Bednar of Third Street Books. “I’ve also enjoyed all the thank-yous I’ve gotten. The year before last, I went through 10 bags of candy, so this year, I bought 15 pounds. They’ve emptied half my container. Obviously, we here in Marysville like Halloween.

that even the smallest gestures can turn into the most amazing displays of kindness and generosity. Soccer couch Geoff Kittle characterized Mendoza as a standout soccer player from a close-knit family, who made the varsity soccer team at MarysvillePilchuck High School as both a freshman and a sophomore, and was looking forward to playing for Getchell in the spring. Mendoza was an honorable mention selection to the Wesco North soccer team as a sophomore last year. This fall, he also ran for the Marysville Getchell cross country team. “His resiliency was one of his strengths, Kittle said. “For instance, when his older brother Eddie, whom I coached as a freshman, was diagnosed with MS, I was amazed at how well Juan kept himself together. Where other players might break down when dealing with such stress, Juan played with a sharper focus. Many times it felt like Juan was playing for two — not only the pride of his school, but also the pride of his family. Although Juan Mendoza’s number will not be retired at Marysville Getchell, the next player to wear it will

be the team captain, and will be expected to lead others and live up to the example that Mendoza set. “No one can replace Juan, Kittle said. “We plan on honoring him by continually being positive and always giving 100 percent of ourselves. Judith Murdock, Mendoza’s principal at the Bio-Med Academy, described him as wellliked by his peers and an excellent performer in the classroom, who particularly enjoyed his math and science courses. Messarina noted that Mendoza was already a Running Start student at Everett Community College, and added that he’d been a Marysville student since attending Sunnyside Elementary and Marysville Middle School. Juan’s parents, Rafael and Carmen Mendoza, remembered him as a loving, helpful, protective child who always took care of his brother and sister. “All the Getchell students knew him, Nehring said. “He came from a family of high-quality people. “The Marysville School District staff mourn the loss of Juan, and our prayers are with all of these families, MSD Superintendent Dr. Larry Nyland said.

Next Qwuloolt Marsh tree planting Nov. 5 MARYSVILLE — Sound Salmon Solutions will partner with the Tulalip Tribes and the city of Marysville to continue their Qwuloolt Marsh restoration with a tree planting on Nov. 5. This event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and continue the hard work accomplished by volunteers at the

Sept. 23-24 Days of Caring with the United Way of Snohomish County. The Qwuloolt Estuary project is a nationally-recognized estuarine restoration. The Qwuloolt Marsh — Qwuloolt means “marsh” in the Lushootseed language — is adjacent to Ebey Slough and lies within the Snohomish River floodplain near Marysville. According to Kurt Nelson of the Tulalip Tribes and Josh Fitzpatrick of the Army Corps of Engineers, the project is one of the largest estuarine habitats to be restored in Puget Sound, second only to the Nisqually Delta. Volunteers and Sound Salmon Solutions staff will

plant native species over an area of the marsh. Volunteers will have the chance to learn about native plant identification, salmon and their habitat, estuarine systems, and the site’s history as part of the only remaining 17 percent of the Snohomish Estuary. For more information, contact Kristin Marshall, habitat restoration program manager for Sound Salmon Solutions, at 425-252-6686 or kristin@soundsalmonsolutions.org. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Lundberg is best for school board Marysville students are lucky that Pete Lundberg is running for the Marysville School Board, District 3. Due to our state’s poor economy and budget cuts to education, Marysville schools are experiencing very difficult times. Its school board directors need to understand the details of how state budgets and school districts work, how to stretch limited funds, and what is best for kids. Pete understands all of these things from the inside out having been the principal of Marysville Middle School for 18 years. As a former MMS PTSA President I believe that Pete is the best candidate for the job. Join me in voting for Pete Lundberg for Marysville School Board.

Now that is the kind of mayor that Marysville needs to retain. His accomplishments are many: the financial situation due to his hard work; sidewalks and road improvements; we have better police protection; and getting volunteers to help clean up the graffiti in the city plus the unkempt yards, so as to improve the beauty of our city. One thing that truly upsets me is that people don’t acknowledge that due to some local, state and even federal laws, our mayor’s hands are tied. When it comes to existing policies, he is not to blame. (For instance, think “bikini baristas.”) However, if you want a mayor who listens and cares, and can affect positive change, Jon is your man. Many thanks for all that you’ve done, Jon Nehring, and I hope you win the election.

Kathie Roon Marysville

Mayor Nehring listens, cares When Dennis Kendall retired mid-term as mayor in 2010 and was replaced by Jon Nehring, our city was quite fortunate. He served nine years on the City Council of Marysville and is very knowledgeable of the work to be done. In my view, I just want to acknowledge that Jon stepped into a difficult economic situation with grace and excellent listening skills. By making hard decisions, he has managed to stabilize the city financially with as little impact as possible to city services and programs.

Corporate creep I

like to keep my finger on Marysville’s pulse to detect change. Like my doctor, I need to know if there have been any significant happenings that might account for change. Of course change is inescapable. Fresh change comes as newcomers settle and new businesses open their doors. Normal change happens as we adjust to make things more practical, comfortable, efficient and profitable. Seen over time, normal change is rather like watching a restless dog remaking his bed. Change of a more subtle type occurs as newish shops and offices and families weather first years of settling into lasting relationships with us. Or they lose footholds and wither or move away. Change is always a mix of ups and downs. As local businesses change hands it’s a rare one that passes from parents to the next generation nowadays. With a world of opportunity beckoning, it’s normal that kids want to go their own ways. Businesses get gobbled up in high-pressure buy-outs or lose clientele to big boxes. Since many of us are affected when change happens, it’s important to take a look at the dynamics as a town transitions from home-owned operations to corporate ownership. Let’s say that Podunk, population 248, is too small a market to draw the interest of big chains. But when the nearby interchange project connecting north-south traffic with the east-west freeway is completed, Mel and Edie who run the Podunk Café will be competing with brand new travelers’ convenience outlets offering everything from bananas and Band-Aids and

OPINION BOB GRAEF jo-jos and jumbo corn-dogs. It will happen because advance men sifted through maps and court house records like prospectors of old to determine that the new Podunk interchange might generate a profit. Mel and Edie are home-grown proprietors. Eateries at the new interchange will be run by managers who may not own a single share of stock in the companies they serve. Mel and Edie decide what flavors of pie to serve and how to display them while the corporate managers place the pies they’re assigned just-so in corporation refer-cases. Mel and Edie deposit their proceeds in the nearest bank while the managers’ gross receipts wing off to corporate headquarters in Minneapolis. Town councils should be tracking changes in the ratio of home-owned to corporate-owned businesses. But that ratio will only show the tip of the iceberg. The real significance lies in the ratio of total receipts between the two sectors. If home-owned and corporate-owned businesses may be likened to two vacuum hoses siphoning disposable income from Podunk, the turbo-charged corporate siphon is capable of sucking up everything but pennies dropped in parking lots. The ownership mix of Marysville businesses is changing. Corporate-owned big-boxes

and grocery chains now skim the lion’s share of sales. Tribally owned businesses are hybrids that may or may not be managed by corporate specialists. The next smaller tier, typified by NAPA, Radio Shack and Rite-Aid, is a mix of local franchise operators and corporate managers, usually determined by how much inventory and space are required. Local entrepreneurs can own smaller outlets that are supplied, decorated and operated according to corporate formulas. Think Subway or McDonalds. In today’s business climate, true locally owned and operated businesses occupy niches too small or specialized to attract corporate predators. Barber shops, specialty shops, hometown restaurants, bicycle shops and professional services typify this level. Some shops with roots in Marysville’s past have been able to defy corporate creep. Think Hilton Drugs or Don’s Restaurant. In between are regional chains like Bartell Drugs, a third-generation Puget Sound chain with less than 80 outlets. Bartell’s is one of only three regional drug chains in the nation that haven’t been grabbed up by giants like Walgreens and Rite Aid Corporate creep shows up on public facilities that sign away their identities for a fee. Comcast Arena, Quest Field, Safeco Field and Key Arena for a few. It shows up among elected officials who sign away their integrity for corporate donations to campaign funds and promised future rewards. It appears on consumer goods that leave shops as mobile billboards for their makers. It’s cool to SEE GRAEF, PAGE 5

It’s time for T.H.R.O. Some of you might remember what it stands for, Throw the Hypocritical Rascals Out. It’s time to act on this locally. The empire of Marysville has a great alternative for leadership. We have found the right person for mayor of our city, he is Kelly Wright. How could anyone vote back into office the people that created our problems? All of us who live north of 100th Street NE were hijacked by the Empire of Marysville (annexed without a vote). Then they put all kinds of taxes on our utilities. We now pay more to live here and get less. This is unDemocratic, unAmerican and unacceptable. The existing leadership supported

this annexation and tax increase — so why would we want to vote them back in? We just received phony literature in the mail asking us to support these pirates that hijacked and robbed us. The literature claimed a 15 percent drop in crime; but north of 100th Street on 51st Avenue NE crime has increased over 100 percent. Every week we hear of another break-in and robbery. It seems that thieves are attracted to this area ever since the empire took over. It is obvious that local government is trying to force us off the farm and out of the community. Let’s all do the right thing and vote for Kelly Wright — for the good of the community and the country.

It avoids the railroad delays by being east of the tracks and is not hindered by a school to the east as it is at 136th. It will be the catalyst to creating an income and employment stream from economic development for all of North County. It will move traffic east into a large employment hub and send it back for the sales tax. It could also connect Hwy. 9 with I-5 sometime in the future. I wish Kelly Wright would have run for City Council or applied for a Planning Commission seat prior to his bid for Mayor. It is a good way to get acquainted with our city and gain accurate local knowledge.

Nehring has my support Dear Editor, with careful consideration of the candidates for Marysville Mayor I will be supporting Jon Nehring. Candidates, what’s your plan? Recently, while I was out for an afternoon shopping expedition, I made the grievous error of crossing State Street at 94th (I was leaving the west side of State and crossing to the Northeast corner of 94th), as you may or may not know there is no crosswalk there.

I have lived in Marysville about seven years and had no clue that what I did was considered jaywalking and I could have been given a ticket for $125. I did not impede traffic nor was my safety ever an issue. At 55 years old I do know how to safely cross a street without a light. The only crosswalks in the area are at 92nd and then all the way up by Fred Meyer. Today, I walked down 94th and wanted to go to McDonald’s. In order to accomplish this I would have had to double back to 92nd or do as I did and walk to the Fred Meyer’s corner, cross there (which is another horror story in itself) and then double back anyways. Traffic on State is a nightmare 90 percent of the time and crossing even at the crosswalks is a hazard. Is this city so anti-walkers that there can’t be a crosswalk installed somewhere in between? Are there not people who make big bucks with college degrees sitting in city hall who could help with this issue? Sorry, I’m just a little peeved because it seems that unless you drive, you don’t matter, Okay, my challenge is this — candidates running for mayor — want my vote this month? Let me know what your idea would be. Julie Connell Marysville

GRAEF FROM PAGE 4 wear Old Navy, Aeropostale or to carry Louis Vuitton. It’s cool for cars and pickups to display decals advertising ignition, exhaust and tire makers, even when they aren’t part of the vehicles. Consumers dote on Rolex, Ford, HarleyDavidson, K-2, Smith and Wesson, and Seahawk products. Corporate America’s analysts are watching to see which we fall for. They know our TV favorites, leisure pursuits and purchases. Every business needs planners and dreamers but an economy built of Big Business uses a fraction of what’s needed by small business. And studies show that big business leaders maintain cliquish relationships that think with one mind. This may be good for business, but it is not good for the economy or the nation. That paradox surfaces wherever corporate giants rule. For example, monopolistic bigness might be good for the bottom lines of ADM, Cargill, Monsanto and DuPont but it clearly undermines the quality of American agriculture and diet. We need to keep a watchful eye on corporate creep and consider where it’s taking us. Comments may be addressed to robertgraef@ comcast.net.

It really is not important that you are happy with your religion, what is important is that God is happy with your religion. Are you tired of all the hype and materialism found in so many religious groups these days? God has already shown us what true religion is. At the Smokey Point church of Christ we are committed to the open study and honest application of God’s word. It may not be entertaining but it sure brings a rest from the burden of sin. Isn’t that the whole point of religion? Let’s talk about it. 360-939-2080

M-P spikes Arlington’s Senior Night BY JAKE MCNEAL jmcneal@marysvilleglobe.com

ARLINGTON — Seniors were out in force on both sides of the net when Marysville-Pilchuck volleyball visited Arlington on the Eagles’ Senior Night. Tomahawk coach Shelly Johnson’s squad featured seven seniors compared to Arlington’s six, and it made all the difference in the Tomahawks’ 3-0 sweep. Setters RaeAnn Bobadilla and Lexi Fitzmaurice, outside hitters Summer Cull, Kayla Ames, Hannah Watson and Lindsey Hartelroad, middle back Jessica Boyle made themselves at home and overloaded the Eagles’ senior power with their own. “They’re such a nice group of kids,” Johnson said. “There’s usually a sourpuss on every team, but not on

this one.” The Tomahawks showed more hustle on offense, starting game 1 with a 13-4 lead and forcing Arlington to call timeout. The Eagles rallied to within three at 23-20, but M-P forced Arlington turnovers and closed the game out, 25-20. The Tomahawks led 17-15 in game 2 before scoring six straight points and taking the game 25-20. The Tomahawks shouted, “1-2-3 solid,” eager to close out the match coming out of a timeout in game 3. The Tomahawks constantly kept the ball alive to score easy points off of Arlington’s miscues. The teams fought to ties of 9-9 and 11-11 before M-P led 22-19. But the Eagles would not die. Arlington made a state-

ment by reeling off three straight points, including a long exchange in which neither team would let the ball hit the ground, to fire up the crowd and electrify the Arlington gym, but the Tomahawks answered with three straight points of their own to put their division rivals away. “I had expectations of them and they didn’t want to disappoint,” Johnson said. “I’m so impressed with the team’s improvement — Jessica Boyle’s confidence grew over the season and made a big difference tonight.” Hannah Watson was a threat on offense and defense, tallying 11 digs and 10 kills. Junior libero Hailey Bramer kept the Tomahawk juggernaut running with 23 digs to keep the Eagles under pressure all night.

Shorecrest spoils M-G’s Homecoming BY JAKE MCNEAL jmcneal@marysvilleglobe.com

MARYSVILLE — Marysville Getchell had many opportunities to beat Shorecrest on Oct. 27. They forced turnovers and were stout against the run all night. But the first-year team just isn’t there yet. A banner at Quil Ceda stadium read “When three fall, we all stand tall” to honor three Getchell students involved in a car crash on Oct. 24. “Win it for Juan,” another sign said, in memory of Juan Mendoza, who died in the accident. The stadium held a moment of silence in his memory before the game. Getchell was bailed out on Shorecrest’s first drive when the Scots went away from their power running game and instead threw incomplete passes to have to punt. The Scots faked the punt, however, and their punter thundered down the Getchell sideline for a huge gain and a first down. Senior running back

Troy Phillips ran 21 yards to the house just minutes later to put his Scots up 7-0 with 8:39 left in the first quarter. The Charger defense stopped Shorecrest runners for short gains in the first quarter and stripped the ball from Philips on Getchell’s seven-yard line after he steamrolled a defender. The Chargers’ rushing attack kick-started with big gains from senior running back Cullen Zackuse, but they could not generate offense or points in the passing game. Scots senior wide receiver John Odion hauled in a 31-yard pass to put his team up 14-0 at 9:35 in the second quarter. Getchell came to life with junior quarterback Dylan Diedrich’s 45-yard strike to junior wide receiver Alexzander Seymer on 4th and 3, and trailed only 14-8 after a successful twopoint, spread-formation conversion. But Shorecrest took the wind right back out of Getchell’s sails when junior

running back Keegan Lockler returned the Charger kickoff 92 yards for a score. The score stood at 21-8 with 6:37 left in the half. Zackuse took the ball and powered down the Getchell sideline to keep his team in it, but the drive stalled after a handful of short flank passes. A Charger field goal made it 21-11 Shorecrest at 2:15 before halftime. Shorecrest kept its momentum by returning the kickoff to the Getchell 18-yard line and scoring quickly from that distance for a 28-11 advantage heading into the half. Getchell’s punt on their first drive of the second half landed deep in Shorecrest territory, but the Chargers could not keep the ball from rolling into the end zone from the one-yard line. The defense forced and recovered Shorecrest sophomore running back Matt Brennan’s fumble 21 yards from a score but had to settle for another field goal to cut the deficit to 28-14 with 5:26 to go in the third.

+BLF .D/FBM 4UBGG 1IPUP

Marysville Getchell students and fans hang signs honoring three students who were involved in an Oct. 24 car crash, one of whom, Juan Mendoza, lost his life. Philips pounded up the middle for a first down on 4th and 1 from the Scots’ 37, but Shorecrest would put four plays later. Diedrich drew the Scots offside with a hard count on 4th and 1, but his fourth down pass from the new set of plays fell incomplete to

end the third quarter. The Scots owned the fourth quarter with senior wide receiver Jerome Seamon’s 42-yard touchdown grab at 7:49 and a 12-yard score from a Getchell kickoff return fumble for a final score of 42-14.

“One more week — you’ve got one more week to get it together,” Getchell coach Davis Lura told his players after the game, urging them to give the coming week’s practices all of their best effort. “A win would be like you went undefeated to me.”

Cougars split Cascade Conference title BY JAKE MCNEAL jmcneal@marysvilleglobe.com

LAKEWOOD — The 2011 Cougar football squad will tell you that every game

on the schedule matters. It’s what just won them a Cascade Conference cochampionship. “The lesson was learned after the loss to King’s,

Lakewood coach Dan Teeter said of the letdown his team suffered a week after its Sept. 30 homecoming win against Archbishop Thomas Murphy.

Redemption in the final game of the season was at hand if Lakewood could beat South Whidbey on Oct. 27. A wiser Cougar team

trounced South Whidbey 34-7 to take the No. 1 seed in the 2A playoffs. Archbishop Murphy finished with a 6-1 division record, the same as the Cougars, by beating Sultan on Oct. 27, but took the second spot because of the loss at Lakewood. Junior Cougar quarterback Justin Peterson found the end zone three times by ground on 80 yards against South Whidbey and caught another touchdown — all in the first half. “This was the second time Justin’s had a first half like that, Teeter said. “The first time was against Granite Falls (on Sept. 23, in which Peterson had one passing, three rushing and two receiving touchdowns before halftime). He was at 20 touchdowns this season,

N OW

two short of the Lakewood record. If you give him a crease, he’ll find a way to hurt you. Senior running back Chris Melton made the evening more fun for Lakewood by gashing South Whidbey for a career-high 142 rushing yards — 155 yards when Teeter and the staff reviewed the game film — and an eight-yards-percarry average. “Chris is a workhorse, Teeter said. “It’s fun to give him so many carries and see him dragging defenders. Lakewood hosts the Burlington-Edison Tigers, a rematch of last year’s 43-12 Burlington-Edison rout of Lakewood, at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4. With a win, Lakewood becomes the No. 1 seed from District 1 in the 2A State Tournament.

Why didn’t the other Estimator go in my crawl space?

A: I can’t speak up for them; here at Andgar we are

very thorough during our free estimate. After we have Comfort Advisor properly sized the system for your home, we go into your crawl space so that we can measure your trunk line and make sure that your ductwork is properly sized for the system that we sized for you. The supply plenum is where the warm air comes out and that has to be large enough for the amount of heat runs that are in your home, especially for a Heat Pump. We also like to make sure that your insulation looks healthy underneath we make sure that there are no signs of grey everywhere as that indicates leaks in the ductwork. If you have had concerns of airflow we can usually see why and this helps us to better asses.
