edged that one of Sortland’s duties was oversight of the property room. Thomas hinted there were additional concerns, but would not go into details. “There were other issues the city had with his employment, is all Thomas would say about Sortland’s release.

As city leaders wind down the long, laborious process of crafting a 2012 municipal budget, the public will have one final opportunity to exert some influence. Monday’s meeting of the Enumclaw City Council will include a third public hearing on the property tax rate to be charged next year and a second and final public hearing on the budget as a whole. Following Monday’s meeting, the only public step in the budget process will come Dec. 12. That’s the date earmarked for adoption of the 2012 citywide spending plan. Between now and then, there’s plenty of financial intrigue to keep Enumclaw citizens interested. With regard to the 2012 property tax, city officials still need to formally decide what to do with the money previously collected to support the fire department. Now that the city has annexed into Fire District 28 and is no longer on the hook financially, council members must address the fire money, which amount to 89 cents in property tax for every $1,000 of assessed value. The majority of council members have remained adamant that the city should not collect the money, which would pump more than $900,000 into the allimportant general fund. One suggestion brought forward would have the city forfeit-

‘Tis the season for forgiveness Church Corner Dean Smith Live To Forgive Ministries

it from your head to your heart. However, there’s just one catch. Before you can give God’s amazing love and forgiveness, you’ve got to truly receive God’s amazing love and forgiveness. I can’t give my sister the newest iPhone if I haven’t purchased it and taken ownership of it first. In the same way, we can never give the kind of forgiveness and love that God has called us to give until we’ve received it from him first! Now here’s the kicker: Jesus has already purchased your forgiveness (and your enemies as well) when he gave his life on the cross (John 3:16). We simply have to believe and receive what Jesus has done for us, and begin the process

of truly living like there’s no longer any condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). Only once we’ve received the greatest gift the world has ever known (God’s grace), can we then pass it on to others. God doesn’t want to fill you up with his love just so that you can be transformed. He wants you to be a city on the hill, with his love overflowing out of you in all you do, all you speak, and in how you respond to all things. God’s love flowing out of you will draw people to him. This may be the season of giving, but until we take the time to truly surrender our guilt and condemnation and receive God’s forgiveness, we have nothing of value to give. Are you curious how to do that? Ask God for help! Now, here’s Part 2, and it may surprise you: True forgiveness does not end with “not being mad. Love is the reason for, and the result of, true biblical forgiveness. We read in 1 Corinthians 13, that without love, all of our good deeds are in vain and mean nothing, and that includes forgiveness. Forgiveness hasn’t reached its God-given potential if it hasn’t evolved into love. (1 John 3:18) “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. This holiday season, don’t

let the turkey and pumpkin pie make you lazy when it comes to being a vessel for Christ. Take the time to truly reach out to the family members that you’ve been challenged by and show them the love that God has made possible in you. Real forgiveness will result in real love. Remember that real love is active and will find ways to be a blessing when extended in appropriate ways. The key word is “appropriate. Appropriately loving someone may mean simply praying for them. It may also mean connecting with them in writing, or in person, or by voice. It’s critical to listen to God in this part of the process. So these holidays, whether it’s that crazy, loud uncle, or the black-sheep, trouble-causing cousin, or that gossipy auntie who likes one cup too many of eggnog, find ways and make a concerted effort to extend God’s grace, love and compassion in appropriate ways, just as he has forgiven you. The gift of forgiveness will truly be the most valuable gift you will ever be able to give. Dean Smith is the founder/director of “Live To Forgive Ministries and teaches about forgiveness and love through movies, books and speaking engagements around the world. So, can I be really straight forward with you for a couple of minutes? OK, here it is: you should really – no, I mean really – forgive each and every person in your life. Then, you should love them. I know, I know, you’ve heard this before. You’ve listened to a sermon, maybe you watched a movie about it, and perhaps you’ve read a book about forgiveness. Perchance you’ve memorized the part of the Lord’s Prayer which says, “You will be forgiven just as you forgive and your overall theology on forgiveness is extremely sound while even knowing exactly what you SHOULD do. However, you may discover that your application of forgiveness theology has been a bit, how should we put it, “weak lately. Well, I’ve got great news, you can start today! With the holidays upon us, could there be a more perfect time to take God’s grace, love, and forgiveness from the limitation of your theology, on to your psychology? Call it a forgiveness transplant if you want, by taking

Sortland, who had been with the department more than 25 years, has appealed his termination and has a case pending with the city’s Civil Service Commission. Enumclaw, like all cities, receives a thorough examination every year by the state auditor’s office. Thomas said city administration had uncovered some concerns about the property room and asked the auditor to take a closer look. The Auditor’s Office often makes suggestions to cities, but significant items are listed as “findingsâ€? and it is expected cities will take corrective measures. In this case, the auditor’s report stated, â€œâ€Ś we identified a condi-

a perceived problem did not exist. For example, the city noted that illegal drugs had been destroyed in November 2006 and December 2010. With regard to the money kept in an officer’s wallet and the sum that could not be accounted for, it was found to be the result of bookkeeping procedures. Upon completion of the audit, the balance was found to be in order. Thomas said everything in the property room has been accounted for and “the city has taken a number of steps to make sure our policies and procedures are current. Editor’s note: The full report by the State Auditor’s Office can be found at www. sao.wa .gov/EN/Repor ts/ Pages/default.aspx. bank the 89 cents, bringing it forward only if voters agree to pay higher taxes to fill a community need. Most often mentioned are additional police officers or maintenance of city streets. Looking at the budget as a whole, city leaders continue debating the future of the public library. A longtime fixture in the city and supported by the general fund, the library has seen its budget whittled in recent years.

A recent suggestion would have the library funded in a nontraditional manner. Instead of taking money from the general fund, it has been suggested the library’s finances come from the city’s Fund 180. That fund has been built through the sale of cityowned property and the rent received from tenants on city land. Such a move would be significant in that it would provide only one-time

funding for the library, while the general fund has historically provided an ongoing source of money. The potential of finding library money in Fund 180 doesn’t sit well with the most active library boosters. The move has been suggested as a stopgap measure, with the assumption city residents will decide during the coming year if they wish to annex into the King County Library System.

Question of the Week Do you make an effort to shop local during the holiday season?

Did you know that the idea that L-Tryptophan in turkey makes you fall asleep is a myth? It’s true: though one to 15 grams of the amino acid has been shown to be an effective sleep aid, you would need to eat nearly a pound of turkey meat alone to get the minimum dose. Sound easy? Maybe, but the irony is that L-Tryptophan has only been shown to be effective when taken on an empty stomach. Post-feast lethargy is actually the result of the effort it takes to digest large amounts of food. After a big meal, blood rushes from other organs to your stomach, tuckering you out. Daniel Nash So when you’re Staff Writer easing into your post-meal Thanksgiving nap tomorrow, don’t thank L-Tryptophan. Thank yourself; you’ve won at eating, friend.

County has better budgeting procedure than state legislature By Dan Roach For The Courier-Herald

While serving as 31st District state representative (2001-10), my experience passing a state budget went like this: four people sat in a room and created a multibilliondollar budget. When they came out, they plopped a 1,000-page budget on my desk and said, “we will vote on this tomorrow, make sure you have your amendments in by 10 a.m. My experience passing my first Pierce Count y Council budget

Pierce County Council was much different and, might I say, a breath of fresh air! During the two weeks leading up to final consideration of the 2012 budget, my colleagues and I spent ever y day in meetings ca lled “Committees of t he W hole. There we spent hour after hour going over budgets submitted by each department. We asked questions, heard public testimony, scrutinized information, asked for more details

and made suggestions and recommendations. At the end of the process, a bare bones, but sustainable, budget was passed withDan Roach out raising taxes. W h i le Pierce Count y government has been affected by our current economy like other local and state

Gang violence is nothing new By Chief Deputy Steve Strachan For The Courier-Herald

The other day I was f lipping through the cable channels and came across the movie “Colors with Robert Duvall and Sean Penn. The movie is all about two Los Angeles police officers working in the Gang Unit. They deal with generational, entrenched gang issues in certain neighborhoods and the overall tone of the movie is how hopeless and difficult reducing gang violence can be.

King County Sheriff’s Office The movie was made in 1988, 23 years ago. My point is that gang issues and the high-profile incidents that sometimes result from it are nothing new. The reasons behind the existence of gangs are complex, and any attempt to reduce or “solve the gang problem is similarly complex. After some recent high-profile gang incidents, it is attractive to look for an easy answer. Deport all the illegals, put everyone in jail, have more guns,

have fewer guns. Of course, the real solutions are not easy and will not have quick results. Also, the problem is not specific to any one area or Steve Strachan part of our county. So, let’s discuss it honestly and thoughtfully. Gang issues exist in every region of the country and are often cyclical. Like crime itself, rises in gang

This historic building was built in 1922 by the Victor Gattavara family who operated a store on the main floor and lived in the home’s second floor above. By 1937, Joe Santi owned the building, followed by Harold Halvorsen in 1958 and James Hovel in 1970. For years the building was operated as the Morganville Tavern with their famous silver dollar bar. In years long past, my mother was the key social link that held our extended family together. There were aunts and uncles and cousins in Forks; they came here for Thanksgiving, but I didn’t know them very well because I rarely saw them any other time. Mom’s annual dinner also attracted Seattle cousins, whom I knew much better. And finally, there were local relatives I saw all the time. In general, it wasn’t unusual to have 16 or 20 people seated for the Thanksgiving feast around two or three adjoining tables, stretching from the living room into the kitchen. After dinner, everyone separated into smaller groups; weather permitting, the children went outside, the “women folk cleaned up the after-dinner mess and the gentlemen lit cigars and initiated a game of poker. It’s different today. My parents have passed away, many of my aunts and uncles also have died and I often have no idea where their children are – and if I do, I don’t know them anyway. I try to see my Seattle cousins at least once a year, but recently haven’t even managed that. In short, my extended family is more or less shot to hell. (But don’t get the idea I’m alone for Thanksgiving dinner

abundant rain can make one winterweary, but this is the week to remember how lucky we are to garden here. Be thankful we can enjoy green lawns all year Droughts have forced communities across the country to ration and charge more for water. Entire neighborhoods in the arid South are landscaped with displays of rocks, gravel and boulders instead of soft green grass. Who do they think they’re fooling? We know how much they crave our emerald green landscapes, without the water bills or environmental guilt. Be thankful we don’t have tornados A little wind helps get rid of the deadwood and adds some movement to the ornamental grasses, but here in Washington we won’t be heading to the root cellar as our homes blow away. Be thankful we don’t have gophers

GRAND OPENING December 2011!

The Compleat Home Gardener Marianne Binetti Columnist

Yes, we deal with moles, mice and voles making tunnels in our garden beds and lawns but gophers make even bigger mounds and live in large communities. In the Midwest gophers make mountains out of our molehills. At least our moles are antisocial. Be thankful we don’t have tree-toppers Thanks to educational organizations like PlantAmnesty and Master Gardeners, the yard care professionals in our area know better than to cut the tops off of trees. Tree topping can slowly kill healthy specimens and actually makes them more likely to topple after they sport side branches that can act like a sail in the wind. You can find cruel examples of plant butchery in even the finest neighborhoods in the Northeast and around New York. If you visit these regions, forgive their unsightly and ignorant ways as they mutilate trees and shrubs – they know not what they do.

Be thankful we can grow spring bulbs without a refrigerator visit In the warm winter areas of the country you may find refrigerators filled with daffodil and tulip bulbs because they live in a climate that does not get cold enough for these spring bloomers to flower. Then after all the extra work, the spring colors fade quickly in the South as heat arrives in April and May. Our winters and summers are mild and our autumn and springs long and colorful. Be thankful for the wide variety of plant material that thrives here I just gotta say, the rest of the gardening world envies our wide palette of plant material. Not only does our mild climate and abundant rainfall allow us to play with plants from the tropics (windmill palms, hibiscus and jasmine) but we can also grow desert vegetation (yuccas, sedums and cacti) as well as the woodland plants, ferns, clematis, fuchsias and hydrangeas that grow better in our backyards than anyplace else in the world. Be thankful for our local nurseries and garden shows

Labs win popularity contest

Bulldogs have their loyal followers, particularly in Los Angeles, but the regional appeal isn’t enough to push the breed onto the Top 10 list. Labrador retrievers remain king.

Have a Pawsatively Wonderful Holiday!

TRAVELING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON? BE SURE THAT YOUR PETS ARE CURRENT ON VACCINES AND PARASITE PREVENTION!

According to the American Kennel Club, the Labrador retriever has reigned as the most popular purebred dog in the United States. As of 2009, Labs had topped the list for 19 consecutive years. While that’s an impressive reign, a more careful examination of AKC statistics reveals the Lab’s reign could soon be coming to an end. The German shepherd, which is now the second most popular purebred dog in the U.S., is gaining ground on the Lab and is the most popular breed in several cities. Geography also apparently plays a role in popularity, as the city of Los Angeles loves the English bulldog. The remaining popular pooches include: 3. Yorkshire terrier 4. Golden retriever 5. Beagle 6. Boxer 8. Dachshund 9. Poodle 10. Shih Tzu

XXX DPVSJFSIFSBME DPN pets anxiety and cause possible damage to sensitive ears. Wow! Most of these recommendations sound like they take the fun out of the holidays, right?! That’s not our intention! We’re merely acting as spokesmen for your furry loved ones. We want to stress the importance of recognizing prospective hazards and to bring to your attention, the safest ways to celebrate the holidays with your four-legged best friends. Prevention is the best medicine In regards to anxiety, our veterinarians offer several avenues to help cope with changes in your pet’s environment, and stress from noise and high traffic during the holiday. Some owners would rather not use drugs to treat a stressed dog or cat. One alternative you might see on store shelves are pheromone-based products in various forms, including sprays, plug-in diffusers, wipes, and collars. Cat pheromones can help with problems like scratching and stress while traveling, being boarded or during visits to the veterinarian’s office, and can ease the stress of a cat moving into a new home. Dog pheromone products are used for general stress, separation anxiety, noise phobias, such as those caused by storms or fireworks, and travel. Depending on the underlying causes of these issues, pheromone products can make a noticeable improvement or aid as a supplementary treatment. Another natural therapy for dogs coping with noise and stress is the Thunder Shirt (www.ThunderShirt.com). Thundershirt’s gentle, constant pressure has a dramatic calming effect for most dogs if they are anxious, fearful or over- excited. Light sedatives can be prescribed under severe circumstances to aid in calming you pet’s. Herbal remedies and flower essence formulas designed to ease anxiety can often provide relief for pets - many work well in conjunction with veterinary treatment. Please consult your veterinarian if you have questions regarding your pet’s stress during the holidays. If you feel that your pet may have ingested something abnormal, as we have mentioned in this month’s article, immediate veterinary attention is recommended to avoid severe complications. Education and prevention is key. Send questions, comments, or suggestions for future columns to us at info@buckleyvet. com.

A place where dog owners learn current, science-based dog training with opportunities to engage in a variety of dog activites and sports. We are here to help you train your dog to be a happy, well-mannered and well-adjusted dog that you can take anywhere. Our programs include a broad spectrum of classes geared towards educating both dogs and their owners. Puppies as young as 8 weeks old begin to learn basic commands and socialization skills in our “Pre-School & “Kindergarten classes. More advanced obedience classes build on that foundation and help owners realize the joy of living with well-behaved pets. We also offer a complete range of Rally, Obedience, Tricks, Agility, K9 Nose Work, Canine Core Conditioning and Handler Conditioning classes to prepare dogs and their people for the fun and thrill of competition. Our Canine Core Conditioning class; also called “Fun & Fit, emphasizes the importance of being physically and mentally prepared for any activity that you and your dog want to engage in. This dynamic and fun cross-training class benefits both performance and pet dogs alike. The dogs perform exercises that prevent injuries, improve body awareness, focus, and build confidence. Ultimately, the exercises work on building and maintaining muscle mass, strength, balance, stability and mobility. These classes are overseen by Desiree’ Snelleman, Director of Training for “It’s a Dog’s World. In addition, Desiree’ and her pets: “Tempo in Motion known as “Pace won the 2011 USDAA Steeplechase National Championship, and “What’s the Buzz known as “Stinger won the 2011 USDAA Relay and Team Championship, held mid-October in Kentucky.

narian or emergency vet. Decorate safely. There are a variety of decorations that can cause problems for your pet. Ribbons and tinsel are frequently implicated in veterinary hospital bowel obstructions. Light cords, when chewed or frayed, can cause severe burns or electrocution. Prevent these mishaps by keeping decorations out of reach. Make holiday trips safe and prepare for them well in advance. Take special precautions when traveling with your pet no matter how you choose to travel. Often times flying or driving over state/country lines may require a health certificate and/ or proof of vaccinations. Before departing, consult with your veterinarian/airlines about how to properly prepare for a trip. Table scraps aren’t pet snacks! Many holiday foods are loaded with fat and sodium and can cause stomach upset. Chicken bones can easily get stuck in the digestive tract and other foods like chocolate or onions can be poisonous. In short, people food is meant for people, not pets. Be greedy and keep it for yourself! Because chocolate can cause illness and even death in pets, it should be avoided completely. Chocolate contains theobromine, a potent cardiovascular and central nervous system stimulant that is eliminated very slowly in pets. If your pet experiences chronic or occasional stomach upset, consider discussing diet recommendations with your veterinarian for pets with sensitive stomachs. Holiday recipes for a healthy homemade pet treats Take solid canned food and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Cook in the microwave for approximately two-and-a-half to three minutes or in a conventional oven, bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Serve this semi-crispy/ crunchy treat to your pets on special occasions. Use dry food by grinding it into flour using a blender, then add water until it is the consistency of dough. Make into cookie shapes and bake on a cookie sheet for approximately 30 minutes at 350 degrees. As you count down to the new year, please keep in mind that strings of thrown confetti can get lodged in a pet’s intestines, if ingested, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers and fireworks can cause

Garbage schedule changes due to Thanksgiving

Numbers line up for baby’s birth By Brenda Sexton Staff Writer

Michelle Patsey didn’t give scheduling her Caesarean section at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Enumclaw to Nov. 11 a thought. She said it was the day that was available and her husband was scheduled to be in town. The birth of 9-pound, 3-ounce Ryken became more fun when Dr. Holly Dickson delivered him at 11:11 a.m. So Ryken was born 11-11-11 at 11:11. “I don’t believe too much in the luck stuff,” Patsey said. “But it is easy to remember.” In a strange twist, St. Elizabeth Family Birth Center Manager Jean Horner was on duty. As a labor and deliver nurse, Horner delivered Michelle Patsey 29 years ago at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. Patsey said the two families attended church together and she grew up with Horner’s children, but “it’s been 15 years since I’ve seen her.”

25, trash and yardwaste will be emptied on that day. Anyone with questions can contact the Enumclaw city shops at 360-825-5541. Residents of Buckley, Wilkeson, Carbonado and the rural area surrounding Buckley have their garbage and yard waste picked up by one of the Waste Connections companies, either Murrey’s Disposal or DM Disposal. Those customers who regularly have Thursday pick-

up will receive service a day

There will be no garbage service in the area Nov. 24 as crews observe the Thanksgiving holiday. Enumclaw residents who have trash and yard waste picked up Thursdays should be prepared to have everything at the curb a day early. Trash and yard waste should be available for pick-up by 6 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23. Though the city offices will be closed on Friday, Nov.

Plateau healthcare benefits from Foundation Fantasy By Brenda Sexton Staff Writer

The Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation’s annual Holiday Fantasy is more than a dinner and auction, it’s a fundraiser to keep

programs like the dental and care van running and purchase equipment for the hospital. This year’s 21st annual gala is set for 5:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Enumclaw Expo Center with proceeds ben-

efitting healthcare programs across the Plateau communities. Since 1991, the Foundation has raised more than $2 million and since 2008 has spread that money across the Plateau through donations

like the $600,000 given to St. Elizabeth Hospital during its recent construction. The Foundation also donated $500,000 to St. Elizabeth for mammography equipment and $26,000 for remote critical care equipment. In addition, the group has given $12,500 to Plateau Outreach Ministries, $10,000 to White River School District’s Prevention and Intervention program, as well as several other smaller grants. KOMO TV’s Keith Eldridge will be auctioneer and emcee and the Enumclaw High School chamber choir

will perform. A silent auction is expected to feature close to 200 items. Twenty-eight items are available for the live auction including a Holland American cruise, Alaska fishing adventure, golf packages, an airplane tour around Mount Rainier and more. This year’s fund-an-item is the dental van, which plans to expand service to the Buckley area soon. This year’s Fund-an-Item Hero is Mutual of Enumclaw, who has already made a generous donation to the program. ERHF Executive Director

Rene Popke said, this year’s games include a wine toss, Glamor and Glitz for a Tom Poe Pandora bracelet, heads or tails and a raffle, with proceeds purchasing an infant phototherapy bed for St. Elizabeth Hospital and supporting the return of the community care van. Tickets for the event are available through the Foundation office at 1174 Myrtle Ave., Suite 103, for $85. Tax deductible donations can also be made online at www.enumclawrhf.org or at the Foundation office during business hours.

Saturday event tailor-made for Plateau Wedged between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday, a fledgling effort designed to assure that mom-andpop businesses capture a share of the holiday shoppers’ dollars. The days immediately following Thanksgiving are among the busiest of the year in the retail world. The Friday after the holiday booms with shopping opportunities and Cyber Monday has joined the fray, being the first opportunity for many to sit at their computers and shop online. Now, Small Business Saturday is looking to muscle its way into the public’s thought process. Originated a year ago, the movement asks Americans to “shop small, thus fueling the economy to the benefit of the country’s smaller retailers. The national movement, the brainchild of the folks at American Express, has lofty goals: to create, or save, jobs; boost local economies; and preserve neighborhoods. In Enumclaw, the premier shop-small advocate has been Chuck Bender of Skynet Broadband. He was the instigator and remains the guiding force behind the Mount Rainier Independent Business Alliance. The MRIBA shares the same vision as those behind Small Business Saturday. MRIBA’s website point out that money

spent in the local community – rather than a distant big-box store – stays in the community. It circulates from merchant to merchant, keeping cash close to home nearly four times longer than if it were spent out of town. The Small Business Saturday effort is based on the fact that small businesses are critical to the nation’s overall economy. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there were nearly 28 million small businesses in the United States last year. During the past two decades, they created 65 percent of net new jobs. Their importance to local communities extends even further. For every $100 spent in locally-owned, independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures, according to the small business advocacy group The 3/50 Project. Social media is playing a central role in helping raise awareness about the importance of supporting small business and recognizing Small Business Saturday. American Express has launched campaigns on Facebook and Twitter driving consumers and business owners to facebook.com/ SmallBusinessSaturday where they can participate in the effort.

Ceccanti skiing like there’s no tomorrow By Brenda Sexton Staff Writer

Tyler Ceccanti is starting to get the recognition he craves and gaining the limelight doing what he loves – skiing. Ceccanti is one of the featured skiers in Warren Miller Entertainment’s latest film, “Like There’s No Tomorrow.” Skiing in a Warren Miller film is not a casual swoosh down the slopes. Miller’s films are described as an “adrenaline-fueled dance with gravity.” “To me it’s really fun,” said the 22-year-old who hails from Lake Tapps and calls Crystal Mountain his home slope. “I like scaring myself. I like to see people get stoked about what I’m doing. “I’m living my dream.” This particular piece, the 62nd annual winter sports film, is narrated by Olympic Gold Medalist Jonny Moseley and shot on location on five continents in some of the world’s most inspiring snowy landscapes, from the rugged peaks of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington to the legendary powder of Squaw Valley, California; from the striking Himalayas in Gulmarg, India to the southern hemisphere’s highest peak in Portillo, Chile, as well as Alaska, Utah, Colorado, New Zealand, Norway and Canada. Ceccanti’s segments were filmed while he and Andy Mahre were weaving and bobbing through the trees and powder in British Columbia’s Monashee Range. Mahre, also a Washington state native, is a three-time Warren Miller film athlete and the son of Olympic medalist Steve Mahre.

“I have never skied snow that deep and so many pillow lines for that long,” Ceccanti said describing the terrain. “Best runs of my life.” A 2008 Auburn Riverside graduate, Ceccanti was tagged for Warren Miller’s 2010 “Dynasty” film that shot at Crystal Mountain. “I got lucky to get picked the first time,” he said. “Now they know who I am.” Growing up at Crystal Mountain, Ceccanti knows the mountain like a good friend. His start on the slopes came as a toddler, by age 13 he was freeskiing with the older crowd and in 2007 he landed his first sponsor and the Junior U.S. Extreme Skiing Championship in Colorado. “Crystal was definitely my home away from home,” Ceccanti said. His family still owns a cabin there and he returns often when his schedule allows. It was there where he made the transition from downhill to backcountry at a young age. “I got bored with racing,” Ceccanti said. “I was either crashing or winning, and I did more crashing than winning.” Professional skier tops his resumé these days. “I’ve always been self-motivated,” he said. In the film, he’s joined by worldclass athletes like Chris Davenport, Julia Mancuso, Daron Rahlves, Colby West and Seth Wescott, who ski, shred, huck, bomb, launch, spin and charge in places unimaginable. The film has been sweeping across the nation as a limited, high-definition release, stopping in more than 240 U.S. cities, including major markets like Seattle, Chicago

With screenings often running for one night only, Warren Miller films attract a cultlike following and mark the official start of winter for sports enthusiasts everywhere.

Tyler Salsbury, flanked by his parents Lynn and Dave Salsbury and coach Bob Kilmer, signed on to play golf with the University of Washington. Photo by Brenda Sexton/To view or buy photos go to www.courierherald.com.

For three years, Tyler Salsbury has been waiting to sign a letter of intent to play golf at the University of Washington. The Enumclaw High senior gave a verbal commitment his sophomore year; Nov. 14 he made it official. “It’s a bit anticlimatic,” said Salsbury, who for quite some time has been sporting purple and gold under his maroon and gold on the course and in the classroom. He said the love affair with Washington was mutual. “I wanted them and they wanted me, too,” he said. “So it was a bit of both.”

“Both of these guys are going to be great Huskies,” coach Matt Thurmond said of Salsbury and his other recruit, California’s Jonathan Sanders. “They are just what we are looking for and what has made us great. They have high character, fun personalities, excellent academics, and they can play some serious golf. I can’t wait for them to arrive on campus to start their careers. “Tyler has explosive scoring ability and has shot many really low rounds. He is a real natural player who has a great record and will only get better,” Thurmond said. Salsbury’s course accomplishments extend beyond the high school field.

Former Enumclaw High hoop standout Tony Binetti has signed a contract to play for Banco di Sardenja, Dinamo Sassari, the team he helped lead to a Lega Due title in 2009. “This great organization and its fans have welcomed me with opened arms and I am excited to help out any way I can,” said Binetti, the former Division II AllAmerican who starred as a backcourt ace at Seattle Pacific University, graduating in 2006. “I was just trying out with the team, because it had a need for someone to fill in temporarily for a couple weeks at point guard, where it had a player injured,” he said. “Then, to my surprise, Sassari offered me a contract for the rest of the season.” Binetti is in his seventh campaign with the professional Eurobasket League, six of those being spent with Italian clubs. Due to the current NBA labor strife, Binetti noted that he has a couple of NBA players as hardwood comrades on his Sassari squad, including Steven Hunter and Travis Diener. Binetti also mentioned that Sassari will lock horns Dec. 17 with the team employing another Enumclaw High alum, Brian Scalabrine, who is playing under the Beneton Triviso standard. “It will be interesting to play against Big Red on a European basketball court,” Binetti said. “I worked out with Brian in Enumclaw for most of last summer to stay in shape.” Sassari boasts a population of more than 360,000 and is believed to have the strongest economy on the island of Sardinia. Binetti’s home is on the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, trailing only Sicily, with a land mass of 9,000 square miles.

Bus tour highlights Enumclaw school programs, students By Brenda Sexton Staff Writer

Although the group was small for the first Focus on Education Week bus tour, Enumclaw School District Superintendent Mike Nelson plans to offer the community program again. “It’s a start,” Nelson said of the seven community members who joined him on the Nov. 15 outing. More importantly, Nelson noted, the group in attendance learned of district programs they otherwise may not have known. All on the tour said they would return next year and spread the word. The tour was Nelson’s way to get community members into schools to see what’s happening during the statewide Focus on Education Week. “We were asked to do something innovative to bring attention to and to bring the public in this week,” Nelson said. Leaders across the state were asking all 291 school districts to do something. The White River School District invited local leaders into their schools. In Enumclaw, the day started with a light breakfast and session with Nelson where he lighted upon the district’s addition of PTAs in each of its eight schools, the work

being done in Black Diamond with regard to developer YarrowBay, the recent Enumclaw stadium agreement, the budget outlook, the Rachel’s Challenge program, the efforts of the Enumclaw Schools Foundation and how the Measures of Academic Success are helping students achieve. The group then boarded the school bus for Enumclaw High School where they sat in on a Phil Engebretsen’s government class and witnessed how technology is aiding teachers and students. The group also toured two Career and Technology Education classrooms, which Principal Jill Burnes said are growing. Then the tour was off to Thunder Mountain Middle School, the newest of the district’s schools, opening in 2000. Thunder Mountain has 474 students in sixth through eighth grade and 24 teachers. Principal Ginger Callison spoke about the school’s elective program as the group toured some of those classes. The elective program offers students a taste of many subjects like music, art, technology, heath and wellness activity and foreign language. “We want to give kids a chance to explore before they get to the high school to see what they might like,” Callison said.

Community members boarded a bus with Superintendent Mike Nelson to tour a sampling of programs and happenings in the Enumclaw School District. Photo by Brenda Sexton/To view or buy photos go to www.courierherald.com. She also touched briefly on the district’s Springboard program, a course that prepares middle school students for the rigors of Advance Placement classes at the high school. The last stop on the tour was Black Diamond Elementary School, where participants sat in on a fullday kindergarten classroom and toured the book room. Both are representative of all the district’s elementary schools. Principal Gerrie Garton welcome the tour and spoke briefly about other programs offered at the school which has 300 students and 18 teachers. The full-day kindergarten program began nine years ago and was offered to every student. Recent budget reductions have forced the

district to offer the program on a tuition-basis. The Enumclaw Schools Foundation supplements the program by providing scholarships for students who cannot afford tuition, but benefit the most from the program. The Foundation’s effort allows the district to create one full-day kindergarten classroom at each elementary school. Book rooms like that at Black Diamond offer a wide selection of books at a variety of reading levels. The program, which is in its 12th year, supplements classroom reading material. In Black Diamond, the PTA recently purchased $6,000 in additional books. The tour concluded with a discussion about the days events and the district programs over lunch,

Bugs!

Enumclaw High School students Aaron Nygaard, Nic Peterson, Mollie Parce, Sadi Wentz and Katelin Willson were recently selected from 3,000 applicants to participate in the All-State Choir. Six Hornets also were picked for the All-State band or orchestra. EHS students chosen to participate are: Zachary Bainter, chamber orchestra, bass clarinet; Kaelynn Dirks, chamber orchestra, violin; Alyssa Hudon, symphony orchestra, violin; Ben Hanks, concert band, French horn; Mary Jarvis, symphony orchestra, viola; and Anne Wolfe, chamber orchestra, violin. Student auditioned and competed with others from 22 regions and more than 400 high schools across the state to be selected for the All-State Band and Orchestra. It is one of the highest recognitions of musical excellence awarded to student musicians.

White River High School fisheries science students spent time Oct. 27 with Mountain Meadow Elementary School first graders teaching them about macroinvertabrates – bugs that live in local streams. The program also promotes WRHS FFA chapter’s Partners in Active Learning (PALs) program. Together, the high school and elementary students discussed species and reasons and purposes they serve in an aquatic environment. Students also shared how, and why, to conduct a macroinvertabrate sample in a stream. Photo courtesy Todd Miller/To view or buy photos go to www.courierherald.com.

Dollars For Scholars creating website with national help In 1967, a small group formed the White River Dollars For Scholars committee. The following year they were able to award two scholarships of $100 each to graduating White River High School seniors with money the committee had raised, and two additional scholarships of $1,000 each through an anonymous

donation. In 1974, the group awarded scholarships to 15 White River High School students, including Keith Banks, the district’s current director of human and administrative services. White River Dollars For Scholars is affiliated with Scholarship America, a national, nonprofit, student

aid service organization. The mission of the White River Dollars For Scholars is to increase access to higher education by involving and assisting the private sector in the support of students and in the encouragement of higher levels of student achievement. For 2012, the White River Dollars For Scholars chapter

is creating a website with support from the National chapter which links to the National chapter’s website. This will allow eligible students to be matched for local as well as national scholarships through one application process. To be eligible for scholarship funds, the student must be a graduating senior in the White River School District and have applied for acceptance to a two- or four-year college or university, or a qualified trade school, or other institution of higher learning.

The process of awarding scholarships is carried out by the Awards Committee. The awards are based on a point system that includes academics, activities, community service, work experience, special honors, post high school course of study, quality of application, statement of student’s strengths, interests and goals, letters of recommendation and an interview. SALSBURY FROM 17 Among his 40 amateur and junior golf victories are wins in the 2011 Washington Junior Golf Association Championship and the 2011 and 2010 Tacoma Golf Association’s Junior City Amateur. He represented the state of Washington three times, twice at the Hogan Cup and once at the Junior Americas Cup. As a Hornet, Salsbury is a three-time South Puget Sound League player of the year and three-time all-SPSL

all-academic team member. He averaged under par for all of his high school matches. His best score is a recordsetting 11-under 59 during a practice round at Enumclaw Golf Course as a junior. And he’s not finished yet. Salsbury still has to finish his high school career in May at the state tournament. He’d like to capture the state individual title that has eluded him for four years or the team title that has slipped through the Hornets’ wings. “A team championship over an individual championship, Salsbury said. With the future formalities out of the way, he can concentrate on that goal and then refocus on the fall. The four-year EHS letterwinner said the Huskies’ practice facilities were a big selling point.

“They have the best in the country, he said. Unlike some scholarships, Tyler’s father Dave explained, this one is not a full-ride. Each men’s college golf team gets the equivalent of four half-scholarships per year to split between about a dozen players. A 4.0 student, Salsbury, who is interested in the UW’s business school, is likely to pick up a few academic and local scholarships to offset costs. “I’d like to see what kind of opportunity it gives me, he said. The Husky men’s golf team closed out their fall portion of the schedule by finishing fifth as a team in the Gifford Intercollegiate at CordeValle Golf Club Nov. 2. The team returns to action Feb. 1 for the University of Hawaii Invite on the Big Island.

Pageant participant shines on personal experience Zoe Brown wanted to honor breast cancer survivors like her grandmother, family friend Angi Giese Andersen and step-grandmother. As she watched their struggles, she wanted to make a difference. In November, the Zoe Brown was a Glacier Middle School winner for breast sixth-grade student par- cancer. Photo courtesy ticipated in the Queens Pamela Brown. for a Cure breast cancer fundraising and awareness pageant. Competing against fellow 11 year olds, as well as 9 and 10 year olds, Brown won best introduction and prettiest gown. In her winning introduction, Brown said, “Did you know every 3 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the United States? This is an alarming fact. Breast cancer does not discriminate. It does not care what color your skin is, how old you

are, how much money you have or even if you are a woman. My hope is that in my lifetime we will have a cure. “I have already witnessed people I love fight for their lives against breast cancer. My grandma is now a 4-year survivor. I also watched as a dance mom I know, undergo chemotherapy, I saw first-hand her challenge of being sick and losing her hair. Angi has three girls, that are all friends of mine and the thought that they could of lost their mom breaks my heart. Together, let’s stop this disease. Together the contestants raised more than $15,000 at the annual event and also participated in the Susan G. Komen walk. Brown is no stranger to the pageant world. She has won three of the six pageants she has entered including the Washington State All-American Girl Young Miss in 2010. A competitive dancer with the Auburn Dance Academy, she also recently placed third overall in a national contest in July in California and was the 2011 National American Miss third runner-up.

By selecting the correct sneakers in which to run, walk, and exercise, you can avoid some problems (runner’s knee, plantar fasciitis, and early-onset arthritis) that often plague those wearing the wrong footwear. To assess what type of foot you have, look at the soles of your current exercise shoes. If the top outer edges are worn, you likely are a “supinator, meaning you tend to have high arches and your foot rolls outward. You would benefit most from a cushioning sneaker that is designed to absorb shock. If your broken-in soles are worn on the top inner edges, you are a “pronator, which means that you have flat/low arches and your feet roll inward. You need motion-control, highstability sneakers. Of course the right sneakers can prevent future pain. But if you already suffer from pain in the feet, ankles, knees, hips, or back due to the wrong kind of footwear, you need to call our office for an appointment right away. Our therapists understand how devastating foot pain can be to your everyday activities and we will work with you and your doctor to create a regimen that alleviates your pain. Call 360-802-6756 or 253-826-8520 Our addresses are 21525 Highway 410, Suite B., Bonney Lake and 2776 Griffin Ave., Enumclaw. Physical therapy with a personal touch. P.S. If the worn soles of your exercise footwear indicate that you have equal weight distribution across your foot, you should select sneakers that offer (moderate) stability and a balance of cushioning and support.

Plant breeders, growers and independent, family-run nurseries are located in our area and this means we never have to send money far away for mail-order delivery to try a new, unique or exotic plant. We are within a few hours of specialty nurseries, nurseries with show gardens, free seminars and informative lectures. You don’t even have to hunt around for all this wealth of plant material and information this winter. The Tacoma Home and Garden Show and the Northwest Flower and Garden Show in Seattle both boast indoor color, show gardens and free gardening seminars before spring even begins. Yes, winter is here, but there’s no need to whine. Sneak a peak at the mountains, the moss and the evergreens this week and remind yourself we’re all pretty lucky to live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

violence are not directly linked to any specific trend, like a bad economy or reduced social spending. Law enforcement can have a significant effect on crime, and on gangs, but of course it is not the only answer. Enforcement deals only with the most extreme and advanced parts of the issue. You’ve heard the phrase “we can’t arrest our way out of a problem” and it is true. However, coordinated intelligence, aggressive and targeted law enforcement and strategic prosecution can have a significant effect on suppressing violence. It just won’t “solve” long-term gang involvement. We all know

t t t Marianne Binetti has a degree in horticulture from Washington State University and is the author of “Easy Answers for Great Gardens” and several other books. that takes a coordinated commitment to working with at-risk kids, the community making gang involvement unacceptable, and we also need to stop celebrating and promoting the gang culture in movies and entertainment. So where does that leave us right now? The fact is, law enforcement agencies in King County have been doing aggressive and coordinated enforcement related to gangs for some time. The recent events have brought more attention to the issue and the Sheriff ’s Office is a partner with our municipal police departments to track, identify, arrest and prosecute the worst of the worst offenders. Our challenge is to not allow this enforcement

effort, and the recent addition of more resources to the fight against gangs, to become the “flavor of the month” and to forget about it once something else has our collective attention. The heavy lifting of working with kids, preventing gang involvement and violence, and getting members out of the gang life will continue, and we need to remember that it is important, even when the attention fades. Your sheriff ’s office and

our area police departments are working together, but we are only part of the solution. Let’s not overreact, or underestimate the problem. A thoughtful and long-term approach is the best way for us to keep King County a great place to raise your kids and grow your business. Steve Strachan is the chief deputy at the King County Sheriff ’s Office. He has 25 years of law enforcement experience.
