Kirkland Police are investigating the suspicious death of a 19-year-old woman who died from a neck wound early Wednesday morning in Kirkland.

Authorities have not ruled out any theories as they continue searching for missing 2-year-old Sky Metalwala. The investigation has also largely focused on the boy’s parents, Julia Biryukova and Solomon Metalwala, who were nearing the end of a bitter divorce and custody battle just weeks before their son disappeared on Nov. 6. This is the second story in a two-part series that examines the neglect and abuse the couple alleged against each other. The first part examined the parent’s contentious marital history.

While living in their Kirkland home, located in the South Rose Hill neighborhood, neighbors said the couple was very friendly. “Solomon is a very kind man,” former neighbor Nicolas Collins told the Reporter. “Very soft spoken, what you

‘Jackass’ star brings unique style of comedy to Kirkland S

tanding on the edge of a glider with no parachute, Stephen Glover jumped into the ocean nearly 50 feet below. His body never hit anything so hard. “That was nuts,� recalled the professional stuntman and star of the Paramount “Jackass� movies and MTV series, who fans know as Steve-O. That’s also not the first time he has done anything insane – and certainly not the last. There were also the times when he dangled from building tops and dived into shallow swimming pools. But now, Steve-O, age 37, is taking an even deeper plunge into madness as he performs stand-up comedy during his “The Entirely Too Much Information Tour.� He will perform at Laughs Comedy Spot in Kirkland on Dec. 8-10 as part of the tour. And he plans to bring his

But my heart is really just working on comedy today,� Steve-O told the Reporter over the phone from his Glendale, Calif. home. “I like to roll out my experience as a semi-famous, drug addicted, male slut and being a part of this thing that’s ‘Jackass’ for over 10 years now has really been the source of a lot of material for comedy. It’s been a ridiculous life.� It all started when Steve-O snatched a video camera from his father’s closet when he was 15 years old. He produced homemade skateboarding videos featuring dangerous stunts mixed with comical behavior. After finishing high school in London, he went to the University of Miami and got involved again in skateboarding and swimming. “All I wanted to do was just get drunk and sun tan at

He filmed himself climbing to the top of buildings and doing crazy jumps and dives into shallow pools. He tied rock-climbing ropes to building tops and threw himself over the sides. But what he got instead was the attention of the entire University of Miami dive team. When he came back from his stunt missions, he showed the team his film footage. “They would have trouble

watching it,� said Steve-O. “People were like, ‘holy crap, you’re crazy!’ I remember just saying, wow, these worldclass divers are looking at me. It was like the most validation ever. I was just like man, I’m totally on to something. This is what I want to do, I want to shock people with crazy stuff.� He later enrolled in Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College to further his goal of becoming a professional stuntman. After graduating Clown College, he pitched his home videos to producers and “Jackass� creator Jeff Tremaine took an interest in them. Tremaine was working with actor Johnny Knoxville to create a stunt-based reality show. MTV aired the first season of “Jackass� in 2000 featuring, amongst others, Steve-O, who also starred in several “Jackass� movies. Some of the craziest stunts that he did during the show and movies involved big cats.

“There’s been a lot of lions and tigers and jaguars - anything with big cats is pretty much the most dangerous. And also bears and venomous snakes and sharks are worthy of concern,� he said. Steve-0 first tried stand up in 2006 when someone asked him to go to a comedy club and do something crazy on stage. “I agreed to show up, but gave no thought to the game plan,� he said. “When I showed up, it immediately occurred to me that I couldn’t think of anything crazier than trying stand up comedy on that stage, so that’s what I did. I had some time to think of what I was going to say while waiting for my turn, and I came up with a few things that were absurd enough to get real laughs. From that very first time, I was determined to pursue stand up.� During the tour, he says

he will remain faithful to his brand “by still doing crazy crap, too.� But the audience can still expect the unexpected. When asked if there was one stunt that he hasn’t done yet, but wants to do, he said: “I get this question a lot, and I like to answer it on stage.�

When Caleb Thorsteinson was diagnosed with leukemia at age 1, family friends rallied to raise money to pay what insurance could not. Myriad fund raisers were organized. A stair climb — Climbing for Caleb — at the Bank of America building brought in 300 participants and raised $10,000. Last year, Caleb, now 4 years old, decided he wanted to collect toys for other kids hospitalized at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, where he went for chemotherapy treatments every month for three years. “A truckload� of toys were collected at Captain Jack’s, Tacoma Cascade Christian School, JMI Exteriors in Puyallup and the hospital itself, family friend Lori Longthorne said. “This year Caleb said one truckload isn’t enough,� she said. Another toy drive will be held from 4-7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Hector’s, 112 Lake St. S. in Kirkland.

It showed Steward assaulting the woman on five separate occasions on the night of June 20, 2009, leaving the room just prior to bed checks and then returning after staff was gone. Steward told police that the two had met three days earlier and that the woman was flirting with him. He also stated that the sexual contact was “consensual,� according to court documents. He told police that the woman was complaining of being cold

and that he gave the woman his phone number. Steward’s lawyers argued that he heard voices and has hallucinations. They also said that he believed the two were in a romantic relationship. He often rambled on about celebrities he does not know, the lawyers continued. They also claimed that Steward did not understand it was wrong to have sex with the sedated woman and that he was convinced she consented. But the woman said she

did not know Steward, did not flirt with him and did not give him permission to have sex with her. Police stated in court documents that “(The woman) has obvious mental health issues. It was difficult to keep her tracking with the conversation. She would not remember what you talked about or why you were talking to her.� A nurse at the facility told police that Steward would often expose himself to all the female staff but never the

men. She said “they constantly had to redirect this behavior.� The woman was admitted to the hospital after a near “psychotic break,� according to court documents. Steward was voluntarily admitted to Fairfax mental hospital after a visit to Valley Medical Center in Renton for not eating. While at the Renton facility, he asked doctors to remove a computer chip he believed was implanted in his jaw, the documents continued.

Tips to help you through the college application process For those faithful readers of mine who tuned in last week to my column, you’ll remember that I discussed the college application process that I’m currently going through. This week I find it beneficial to focus on some of the advice I have been given regarding this process. Having so much information to go through while having a set word count for my column means I have to skip my usual introduction, but what I can say is that these guiding tips have thoroughly helped my own college process run a lot smoother than it would have.

The whole college “thing� can be tricky, confusing, and at times very stressful, but the advice I am going to leave you with has made tackling it a lot less of a hassle. Frequently touching base, to almost harassing the admissions offices of the schools that interest you is a great way for them to start keeping tabs on you. In every application and every supplement, there is only so much space for those reading your application to learn about you. By contacting the admissions officers of the colleges you are applying to, and attacking them with questions, you confirm your interest in Zach Shucklin

the school. For the schools that I really wanted to go to, I talked to the admissions offices weekly. Admission counselors are smart, and they can tell who sincerely wants to be a prospective student, so a good impression and your curiosity will only increase your chances. Homework sucks – most high school students will agree. With so much homework, it is a wonder how any high school student has time to finish all the extra essays that the colleges mandate us to write. “Recycling� is a term coined by my own college counselor Susanna Cerasuolo and this concept effectively diminishes the gruesome load of writing. Basically,

a majority of college essay prompts can be quite similar, especially if you are applying to the same programs and majors at different schools, so reusing essays and parts of essays for different schools is an efficient way of completing all you need to do. Countless essays of mine ended with the same conclusion: “and that is why one day, I will thank my alma mater (insert school)� – it really works.

f you haven’t started your holiday shopping, you might want to hold on to your wallet. Gov. Chris Gregoire wants the state to dig deeper into your pocket to help bail-out the state budget. Gregoire’s plan is two-fold: 1. Boost the sales tax by a half-cent, and 2. Have it “sunset” in three years. We have two concerns with that: 1. It’s another half-cent tax on what already is nearly (.095) a 10 percent tax on just about every dollar you spend, and 2. Does anyone really expect that a tax, once in place, will ever go away? Gregoire says her new tax would bring in close to $500 million annually and be largely used to help fund education. Before you applaud, recall that this is the same person who just recently proposed cutting your kid’s school year by four days. Apparently schools – and our kids’ education – is only important if we pay more for it. Gregoire, of course, knows the fallacy in this. The state constitution says clearly that education is the paramount duty of the state. It doesn’t say anything about having to raise taxes to do this. The state may or may not need an extra $500 million, but schools aren’t the place you cut when money is tight. That’s the same problem with her earlier plan to cut the school year by four days. Doing so would save the state $99 million in the 2012-13 school year by not having to pay teachers for those four days. But that also means that our kids get cheated out of four days of instruction. Does anyone really think our kids can get buy with LESS education? We understand that the state faces some tough financial questions. Legislators are back in Olympia this week to deal with a $2 billion hole in the state’s budget. But that doesn’t mean that higher taxes are – or ought to be – the first choice for a solution. After all, it’s not as if

taxpayers’ money is burning a hole in their pockets. Quite the opposite. Consumer prices in the Seattle area have risen 3.8 percent over the past 12 months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. At the same time, take-home pay for people around here has gone up 1.7 percent. Do the math and you’ll see we’re falling behind. Drive to work? You’re even worse off. The price of gasoline in the Seattle area is up 26 percent since last year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. And that means energy prices are up 16.5 percent. There are more – lots more – things that cost more today than they did since October 2010. We’re not saying the task facing the Legislature is an easy one. Far from it. But higher taxes should only be considered as a last resort. The state isn’t there yet.

Chained CPI means major Social Security benefits reduction “Chained Consumer Price Index” is one of those phrases that makes most people lose attention. Yet I’m paying attention because that little bit of Washington D.C. speak would cut

Social Security by $112 billion in the next 10 years and even more beyond that. A new way to calculate the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, Chained CPI, will wind up permanently reducing benefit checks for today’s seniors and future beneficiaries. The shaky foundation on which this terrible notion rests is that consumers will substitute lower-priced items when the cost of what they normally purchase goes up, bringing down their cost of living. Therefore, the theory goes, the Social Security COLA should also go down to reflect all the money smart consumers are saving themselves. But most seniors on fixed budgets

already buy lower cost items, and don’t have any maneuvering room left. With so much of their spending on costs like prescriptions and health care, it’s doubtful they can find cheaper alternatives. There is no store-brand surgery. Making matters worse, the Chained CPI compounds over time. That means the benefit reductions increase as an individual grows older and their retirement savings start to run out. Chained CPI means a major reduction in Social Security benefits – about $1000 less per year by age 85. Ask any older person whether $1000 is a small or a large amount, and I bet I can guess the answer. When every dollar counts, it’s big.

According to a Bellevue police report, Biryukova

financial issues. “I learned about the extent of our debt from my husband when we were six months behind on paying our two mortgages, utilities, credit cards and all other bills,� she said. “This is the time when my husband’s anger and his true character began to show.� Their Kirkland home was foreclosed in the fall of 2009 and they moved out. They then were forced to move back into the smaller Bellevue condo. Solomon claimed in court documents that Biryukova had psychological issues, which led to the breakdown of their relationship. In court records, Solomon said because Biryukova had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder in 2009, “living with her was difficult before our separation.� He described some “unusual things� he did to comply with the demands of her disease, including eating meals with his children outside his home to keep the apartment clean and sleeping on the living room carpet or in his car. “I am not exaggerating when I state under oath that Julia cared more about cleaning a countertop than she did about feeding our daughter,� said Solomon. “The child was ignored, and it became a matter of great concern.� After the foreclosure, the couple and their two children moved back to the condo in Bellevue where neighbors complained about issues related to Biryukova’s condition.

The general manager of the Astoria at Meydenbauer Bay Condominium Association, issued the couple a notice on June 29, 2009 stating they were in violation of noise regulations. The notice stated that other residents were disturbed by vacuuming noise inside the couple’s unit between 11-11:20 p.m. on June 27, 2009. This was their third citation, adding up to $300. Those around the couple had conflicting views of Biryukova’s condition, including her own psychiatrists. Her first psychiatrist put Biryukova on anti-depressants during her pregnancy with Sky, despite her objections. In court documents, Biryukova argued that her psychiatrist had a “history of prescribing powerful psychiatric medications to people who do not require them.� Biryukova was also committed three times, twice

Two weeks before the disappearance of Sky, the couple had an 11-hour mediation session for custody of the two children. During the session the two sides agreed to some visitation rights for Solomon, but Biryukova called him later in an attempt to get out of the agreement. Bellevue Police Major Mike Johnson told reporters that Biryukova acknowledged a history of leaving the children alone for extended periods of time. Court documents also show details of Solomon leaving the children home alone as well. Police say they know whether the mother left her kids alone during the mediation but will not release that information. In an attempt to regain sole custody, Biryukova offered to absolve her exhusband of more than $2,000 in child and spousal support if she could take the children to Scottsdale, Az. He declined the offer. During the investigation to find her son, Biryukova has received criticism for having very few photos of her son in the apartment or on her Facebook page. Court documents also show a contentious battle over items, such as the couple’s camera, which Metalwala would not relinquish rights to. Authorities have expressed frustration with Biryukova’s story of how her son went missing and unwillingness to speak to investigators or take a polygraph test. They said Solomon has been cooperative, but will not release the results of a second polygraph test he took following his son’s disappearance.

It’s year two under head coach Derek Witt for the Juanita High School boys basketball team. For the team, year two means the players know what’s going on and what is expected. “So far so good, I’m very pleased with what the guys are doing,” said Witt. “I think the biggest thing is that they kind of know what’s expected of them. Where our expectations are and competing. We don’t spend as much time trying to teach that so it’s more time teaching them what they need to know. I think that’s the biggest thing. We were just young. They’ve grown up a little bit and that helps.” Witt said too that the older players are helping the younger ones learn the system. “They’ve done a good job of kind of seeing what worked and what didn’t last year. The older kids are doing a good job of making sure everybody buys in to what we’re doing,” said the coach. Two of those players, the captain and only senior, are leading the charge. “It’s going well, we’ve improved a lot in the off season,” said captain Ryan Reid. “We’re more of a team now and we’re playing together.” “We’re working on getting together as a team and working on our chemistry,” said Reid’s co-captain Brett Hamre. Early on, Witt says he sees the team being competitive on the court, even in practice, which is only going to help this season. “I would probably (say) our competitiveness. These kids like to compete,” he said. “They do a lot better job of just day in and day out bringing it. They are finding out

that by bringing it everyday they can’t help but get better. They are learning how to play that way.” Witt hopes they will take that intensity forward. “I think the biggest thing we can do is to just make sure we bring what they are doing in practice to games,” said Witt. “A lot of it is just confidence and getting more and more confident as we go along. They did a lot of work in the spring and summer and are starting to get there and I think they are going to play some really good competition in KingCo.” The team has been working a lot on defense, Witt said, applying the team motto ‘we not me’ to the court. “Defensively we really want to learn how to compete. Our motto this year is ‘we not me,’ so everybody thinks that automatically offensively but we’re trying to show them that you’ve got to be just as unselfish on defense,” said the coach. “Thinking more bigger picture and that’s making them more and more successful as we go along.”

If the faces on the court for the Lady Rebels this year look familiar, it’s probably because they are. The Juanita girls basketball team returns this year after losing just one senior starter last year. “We’re going to have a little more depth this year,” said head coach Sam Lee, counting the fact that the sophomores are now a year older and the team has a new crop of sophomore talent to draw from. “Our post play should be pretty good this year. We’re seasoned in the post, both our post players are seniors coming off all-league years. The other thing is we’re going to have a lot more speed then we’ve had in the past.” Those two, Molly Grager and Kate Cryderman, are the team’s captains and only seniors this year. “We’re working on being intense and making sure we practice like a championship team,” said Cryderman. “We’re taking it one game at a time, and we want to get the team together as a

family. And working to help everyone improve.” But the big goal this year won’t be a possibility for another four months. “The goal we have is to be playing at 8 p.m. on March 5 (to the state championship),” said Lee. “We’ve got to beat a lot of people. That’s really what it is. We have to play well in every game and have to execute well and see where it ends in every game. It’s all about execution.” To get there the team has lots of games to play and even more practices to get everything in place. Early on, Lee said the focus has been conditioning to make sure everyone can physically be as prepared as possible. “All-season condition and getting stronger,” said Lee of the first weeks focus. “These girls have spent hundreds of hours in the weight room in the off season and that’s been good. Beverly’s Daughter, a retail store inspired by one woman’s experience caring for her mother throughout the advanced stages of her life, is holding a month-long open house to introduce the community to its wide range of products, which make caring for loved ones in their own homes easier. The store, located at 1555 N.W. Market St. in Ballard, is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. It is owned by Laura Berry, founder of Soundview Medical Supply of Seattle, one of the largest providers of home health care products in the Pacific Northwest. Berry launched the store — which features some 300 products ranging from specialty apparel and shoes to daily living aids, diabetic supplies, mobility aids and high-end beds, baths and furniture — after years of experience searching for products that enabled her

ailing mother, Beverly, to live safely, comfortably and independently in her own home. More than 90 million of the 300 million residents in the U.S., are over the age of 50. Many of them, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, live in multigenerational homes. And sooner or later, each will likely require and benefit from the types of products and services offered by Beverly’s Daughter. “Our store underscores

our commitment to customers, who like my mother, want to remain in their own homes as long as possible,� Berry says. “Research shows that 80 percent of Baby Boomers who are 55 and older own their own homes, and that remaining in their homes as long as possible is more than just good for their emotional health – it’s sometimes the only option available given today’s economic realities.� By 2020, she adds, almost half the homes in the U.S. will include someone over the age of 55. “That means the number of people needing the support and assistance of caregivers will also continue to increase,� she says. “And we want the community to know that
