Overlake Medical Center didn’t give their geriatric patients on the Island much notice. In a letter sent to patients, dated Nov. 29, signed by Alan Ertle, chief medical officer, the last day of operation for the Mercer Island clinic will be Dec. 30. “This was something unexpected, under unforeseen circumstances, not budget-related,” said hospital spokesperson Mary Beth Walker. Walker said she couldn’t say much, but repeated that the decision to close the Island clinic was not budget-related, and that Overlake was empathetic to the patients on the Island who have used the facility. Walker said they welcome Mercer Island patients to their senior health facility near the Overlake Hospital Medical Center on 112th Street N.E. in Bellevue. When asked if Overlake would provide a shuttle or some sort of transportation for the elderly, Walker said no.

Traffic signals delayed The traffic signals recently installed in the Town Center won’t be up and running until mid to late January. The signals were supposed to be functioning in November, but technicians discovered an electrical signal control system problem, forcing the delay.

The City Council passed the underage drinking ordinance at their regular Council meeting on Monday, Dec. 5. The measure, designed to combat adult-hosted drinking parties, passed six votes to one. Councilmember Mike Grady, who wanted the ordinance to include underage people who are 20 or 21, voted no. Last January, the Council directed staff to examine the option of creating a civil infraction as an additional method of deterring underage drinking in Mercer Island. An underage gathering where alcohol is consumed “constitutes a public nuisance, is an immediate threat to public health and safety, and is prohibited,” the ordinance states. The ordinance is designed specifically to deter drinking by anyone under the age of 19 and excludes landlords from liability.

In brief, a civil infraction or a ticket would be issued to a person whose residence is used for an underage gathering involving the consumption of alcohol, regardless of whether or not the responsible person permitted such activity. Those cited would be fined $250 for the first offense. The ordinance invokes strict liability if a party occurs at the home of an adult, or premises they control. The intent is to establish that a violation has occurred — similar to driving at a speed higher than the posted limit on an Island roadway. The officer in such a situation has the discretion as to whether a ticket should be written. A judge can listen to evidence that a person was not responsible for what happened and reduce the fine or dismiss the case. “These are the types of decisions that our police officers make every day,” said Police Chief Ed Holmes. “They are trained to use their judgment and discretion to individual situations.” Some community members were worried that adults could be cited, despite truly not knowing what had occurred. City Attorney Katie

Name this City! t

Located on the southernmost part of the Iberian Peninsula.

Knight said it is intended to target homeowners who host parties with underage drinking — not to ensnare homeowners who do not. Councilmember Dan Grausz stated that the reason the Council decided to prepare the ordinance was to take action on a serious problem concerning teen drinking on the Island. “The reason we are doing this is to provide our police and Youth & Family Services another tool to prevent what we know is a serious problem in our country and in our own community,” he said. “This ordinance will allow us to ticket adults for not taking appropriate action to prevent teen drinking in their home or on their property,” he continued. “With strict liability, those persons cannot get out of those situations by saying, ‘I didn’t know.’” A civil infraction can be characterized as more serious than a speeding ticket, but less serious than a DUI. There are no criminal charges associated with a civil infraction. While the amount of the fine might seem small, state law limits the amount.

City manager review is complete By Reporter Staff

The City Council completed their review of City Manager Rich Conrad on Dec. 2. It was the first formal review for Conrad since 2008. The mayor oversaw the process, which involves interviewing city managers and key staff and fellow Councilmen.

With Mayor Jim Pearman presiding, the Council held an executive session for the review with the Council, Conrad and city attorney Katie Knight for part of the session, then met without Conrad for the remainder of the meeting. Comments from the executive session, further discussions with Councilmembers, and input from Conrad and Knight shaped the final evaluation document. A full copy of the documents can be found online at www.mi-reporter.com. It lists

measures that include projects completed, budget priorities and work performed. The evaluation notes the impact of the lawsuit on the reputation of the city and the relationship between Conrad and the Council. The Council is of different opinions on various topics, but details about which Councilmen agreed or disagreed with the evaluation findings is not included. The final result is that Conrad is urged to take steps to repair these two areas. There will be no raise. He will keep his job.

CLINIC | FROM 1 The doctors at the Mercer Island clinic were on contract with Northwest Geriatrics, which does not have a bricks and mortar location. A representative for Northwest Geriatrics said they are very sad because the patients are the ones who are hurt. The representative said the doctors will now spend more time in nursing homes, adding that Overlake didn’t give the patients much time to find a new doctor. In a letter from Northwest Geriatrics to its patients, it says, “without the backing of a large institution like Overlake Hospital Medical Center, this closure brings to an end the ability for us to provide you with the level of geriatric primary care and patient satisfaction that you deserve. Overlake Hospital Medical Center has not made any accommodations for us to continue seeing you in the Overlake System as your primary care doctors.

All of us here at Northwest Geriatrics are saddened by this decision. Ruth Lawson, who resides in Covenant Shores, has been in the care of one of the Northwest Geriatrics doctors for two years. She said it was miserable of Overlake to do this, especially with regard to timing. Lawson said Dec. 7 was the last day for seniors to make changes to their Medicare plans for 2012. “It was really a blow, she said. Dr. John Addison, who was one of the contract doctors with Northwest Geriatrics, has been coming to Covenant Shores twice monthly to see patients. He will be visiting patients at Covenant Shores maybe one more day each month, Lawson said. She said she will probably have her medical records transferred to Addison. Lawson said this is espe-

cially difficult for seniors on the Island who don’t drive, or who won’t drive off the Island because they’re afraid of driving on the interstate. Lawson, who does drive, said she volunteers for King County Senior Services, driving seniors to doctor appointments, walking in with them and often waiting. Doug Kirk with Property Management Northwest, Inc., which manages the building where the Mercer Island clinic is located, said Overlake has another year left on its lease. What will happen with the space was unknown at press time. Kirk could not comment on whether or not the management company would allow Overlake to sublet the space. The letter from Northwest Geriatrics also states that the patients were welcome to write to Ertle about their displeasure with this decision.

QFC Meat Donations Help the Hungry Meat is one of the few sources of wholesome, nutritious protein in food pantry visitors’ diets. But for many food pantry visitors, meat is something that rarely is put on the table. Food pantries that serve the hungry often don’t have the resources to provide meat to the people they serve. However, for several years now QFC has been able to help these agencies by donating wholesome meat products that no longer meet our standards for appearance or freshness. Last year, QFC donated 560,000 pounds of meat to food pantries in Washington and Oregon. This is part of QFC’s Grocery Rescue program. “Healthy food is important for everyone, but particularly so for low-income people suffering from illnesses, as well as children and seniors. QFC meat donations enable people to maintain healthier lifestyles and give people the energy everyone needs to care for themselves and their families, says Food Lifeline Grocery Rescue Program Manager Laura Johnson.

QFC stores are allowed to donate any meat product in good condition that is frozen on or before the date on the package. This can include beef, poultry, pork, and seafood, as well as pre-packaged meats such as fully cooked lunch meats and hot dogs. When meat products no longer meet QFC’s standards for selling to our customers and become eligible to be donated, it is critically important that we maintain safe handling and storage procedures. There are very real cross contamination risks when handling meat. For that reason, we keep all meat donations separate by species while awaiting pickup. We use plastic tubs provided by Oregon Food Bank and Food Lifeline; the bins nest and stack and help us to separate meat by species in our meat freezer. All meat donations are frozen solid before leaving the store. Practices we follow before donating meat products include: freezing to 0o Fahrenheit on or before the date on the package and separating the

meat by species. A Food Lifeline agency that participates in the Grocery Rescue program says, “Thanks for the food you give to those in need. We are seeing an increasing need in our community and you are a big part of why we can help. By donating product that doesn’t meet our selling standards, QFC helped our neighbors and friends in

Western Washington and Oregon feed their families. This helps people get back on their feet after experiencing challenges like losing their homes or jobs. Do you have questions about donations? The state has finally announced the start date of tolling on the SR-520 bridge: Dec. 29. I hope I’m wrong, but people like myself who must travel on and off the Island for work may soon face extremely long backups on the I-90 bridge as people avoid the steep cost of commuting across 520. Instead of fighting a toll on the I-90 bridge, Mercer Island residents should have searched for a more creative solution. With electronic tolling, we could have suggested tolling only those vehicles that travel across the entire lake and not toll access to Mercer Island. Dave Parsons

n Monday, Dec. 5, the Mercer Island City Council passed an ordinance designed to help stem the tide of underage drinking on Mercer Island — drinking that is facilitated by adults. It is an open secret on Mercer Island. Teens drink far more and far more often than anyone hopes to acknowledge. They drink with the acquiescence of some parents. As a recent letter to this newspaper pointed out, many Island parents with teens get weary of being blamed for this particular problem. Parents are already tasked with the heavy lifting of raising children here. Like parents through the ages, we watch and worry and anticipate trouble. We teach, threaten, wheedle and hope for the best. But the kids who drink or smoke drugs are, more often than not, good kids with good parents. They sometimes find themselves at a party at a house with lots of liquor. And sometimes, there is an adult upstairs, who knows something is going on but chooses not to know — and not to find out. There are some who shrug and say they would rather their teens drink at home than out somewhere else. If the police are called to a house, they are often told “they didn’t know.” With this new ordinance, if police see underage drinking, they will get out their ticket book. Will they talk to the adult and find out what happened? Will they listen? Can they decide not to issue the infraction? Yes. The police will use their training and discretion to decide if a violation has taken place. If an infraction is issued, the adult will be able to make their case to a judge. The consequences? A $250 fine and a possible mark on your record. Across the United States, there have been a number of these ordinances put in place. After injuries and even deaths, local officials are desperate to find ways to discourage underage drinking. Will this solve the problem? No, not by itself. But as Councilman Dan Grausz said after the vote last week, the ordinance represents another tool in our toolbox to address this very serious issue. We need to try everything we can.

Douglas Jack F. Kuhn Douglas Jack F. Kuhn died on December 2, 2011 of heart failure. He was born to Carl and Gwen Kuhn of Mercer Island on March 15, 1965. He was raised on Mercer Island where he graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1983. During this time he was active in sports and Boy Scouts attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Doug attended the University of Washington graduating in 1988 in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he obtained his Professional Engineering license and worked with his dad Carl and brother Scott at Kuhn Associates, a family Engineering firm started by his father Carl Kuhn. In 1994 he married Dana Paulson and together they added 4 wonderful sons: Dain, Peter, Caleb and Jack. Doug and Dana were actively involved in Young Life Ministry and were volunteer leaders at Newport High School. Passionate about using civil engineering for building Christ’s kingdom, Doug followed God’s call to use his civil engineering in Young Life! In his position as Site Engineer, he helped construct both (Wildhorse) Canyon and, later, Creekside middle school camps at Young Life’s Washington Family Ranch in central Oregon. Doug was an adventurous father who took his wife to Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, took his family to National Parks in a motor home, day trips to beautiful places, mountain biking, Disney World too. His favorite ‘getaway’ was his family’s cabin on Vashon Island where he spent many happy days with his family and friends. Forty-six years was not long enough for us to enjoy him. But surely long enough for us to appreciate and savor his creative, and occasionally random, sense of humor, his strong integrity, incredible work ethic, and adventurous spirit! His whole life was about worshipping, loving and becoming closer to Jesus Christ, his Savior. He brought his boys up in strong faith and love for God and God’s Word. More than anything on earth, he delighted in his sons! He loved throwing the ball with them, giving them hugs and telling them that he loved them, especially each night when he prayed with each one and tucked them in. Doug will be missed by all of us: wife Dana, 4 sons Dain, Peter, Caleb and Jack, his mom, Gwen Kuhn of Mercer Island, brother Scott (Cathy), and sisters Kris (Archie) and Karen (Philipp), 11 nieces and nephews, as well as the Dain and Jean Paulson family of Selah, and, of course, all of his wonderful friends. We will all miss him so much! Doug was preceded in death by his father, Carl Kuhn. A celebration of Doug’s life was held on Saturday, December 10 at Yakima First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions could be made to Young Life’s Washington Family Ranch “Leave No Camper Behind scholarship fund at YLWFR, One Muddy Road, Antelope OR, 97001. 560319

Fred Hutchinson’s home sold to local cancer researcher By Linda Ball lball@mi-reporter.com

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, commonly known as the “Hutch,” is named for the Seattle native and former major league baseball player who died of lung cancer in 1964. Fred Hutchinson was known throughout the baseball community as “Hutch.” He attended the University of Washington, where he was a 1939 initiate of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. After 16 years either playing for or managing the Detroit Tigers, he was replaced and came back to Seattle. Hutchinson lived on Mercer Island in a new home in 1959, which he and his wife, Patsy, paid $36,000 for. The house still stands. The Hutchinsons lived there for a very brief time before moving to Ohio, when Hutchinson became the manager of the Cincinnati Reds. It’s an interesting symmetry that his Mercer Island home recently changed hands, from a research coordinator at the FHCRC, to a research scientist who works

at the UW, which is one of FHCRC’s research partners. Emily Wion lived in the home for nine years and sold it just before Thanksgiving to doctor Janine Bryan. Wion said the neighbors told her the house was originally owned by Fred Hutchinson. She did some research on her own. “Sure enough, there was his name on the original title,” Wion said. Wion has worked at the FHCRC for the past three and a half years, but she also worked there in the ’90s. Wion said Fred Hutchinson bought the home in the Mercerwood neighborhood brand new — it was the model home for the development. “He lived here when he (came back and) managed the Rainiers,” she said. Wion and her family did quite a bit of remodeling to bring the home up-to-date, including gutting the kitchen. But, with a growing family, they needed more space, so they sold the house to move to a larger home on the south end of the Island. One day this fall, meandering around looking at

open houses, Bryan stepped into the home. The agent at the open house told her the home’s back story. Being a scientist who studies the Human Papilloma virus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer, the history of the home intrigued her. Bryan is a research project manager and has been working at UW’s microbiology department for about a year. She had to sell her house in Pennsylvania, where she worked for Merck Research Laboratories developing and testing the efficacy of the HPV vaccine — Gardasil — before she could buy a home here. But Bryan grew up in Edmonds and attended UW as an undergraduate student. “It doesn’t have a view, but it works well for me,” Bryan said. “Emily did a good job of remodeling.” Bryan said HPV causes cervical cancer — the reason women get pap smears. The primary target for Gardasil is adolescent or young adults, as the virus is acquired by sexual contact. Bryan said this is one of the few preventable cancers because it

He’d become a sensation by the time he was 19, winning a league-best 25 games and that season’s minor league

player of the year award by The Sporting News. His brother, Dr. William Hutchinson, created the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center as a division of the Pacific Northwest Research

Foundation after his death. The FHCRC became independent in 1972. “I just thought it was fun, that I was in his house,” Wion said. “It was too much of a coincidence to ignore.”

Finding their focus in the pool By Megan Managan mmanagan@mi-reporter.com

The Mercer Island boys swim team has started their season off with a 2-0 start. Not that it’s unusual for the team to win — they haven’t lost a league meet since 2005. In fact, in the last 10 years, the Islanders have lost just seven dual meets. This season, the Islanders intend to continue the status quo. “When you’ve won state for so many years, you obviously want to do it again, said returning head coach Chauntelle Johnson. This year, the team has an additional plan, one that the seniors have had on their list for quite a while. “We want to be academic state champs, said senior captain Kenny Trowbridge. Last winter the Islanders had a strong group of seniors on the team, leaving behind a slightly younger, but still large team in the pool. Over 70

swimmers turned out in November. “We’re a lot younger, said Johnson. “We had a lot of seniors last year, a lot of guys who were on the state team who aren’t back. There are a lot kids who were on the team last year who were chomping at the bit, and now they have that opportunity. A lot of room for some kids who are maybe trying to find their niche on the team. After a close first meet against Liberty, which had a 95-90 final score, the swimmers got a glimpse of just what it was going to take to accomplish their goals this year. “We were a little sloppy on Tuesday (against Liberty). Liberty is a very good team, said the coach. “I don’t want to downplay that, but some of the things I would have liked to see better from us. Focus is a big thing for us this year. Johnson said she feels the team is strong in the middle distance events,

What we are going to do is change how you move, Change how you eat, And change how you think, All to change how you feel. We are a lot of things, but we are certainly not a gimmick. And we think it’s time you found out why.

Dad Left his Beret in France Born and raised in Paris, he witnessed WWII through the eyes of his older brothers who fought in the French Resistance. After the war, this youngest son was sent to America by a mother who believed there was only one place left in the world with a future. Dad’s love of his new country came quick and ran deep. When the Korean War broke out, though not yet a US citizen, he joined the fight. Over the years I learned so much from him, nothing fancy but what could be more valuable than: work hard, be honest, show respect. Now I’ve watched over dad for years as he’s needed help with daily tasks, like food prep, housework, and transportation. Lately, living by himself has got him down and I’ve grown too exhausted to care for my own household’s needs. If an elderly parent depends on you for daily assistance – maybe they’re not independent any more. Please consider Áegis Living. We are the trusted local senior care provider specializing in assisted living and memory care. We offer the finest care, given by the most committed staff.
