Elementary student hit by car near school Barefoot Fifth grader sustains minor injuries by MEREDITH M. GRIFFITH Staff reporter

Dozens of children’s faces peered curiously from schoolbus windows as a 5th grader on his bike pedaled across the intersection of North Beach Road and School Road. He didn’t see the car coming, but some of the bus riders did. They stared in horror as the 11-year-old was knocked over and dragged beneath the vehicle. He was not wearing a helmet. “Thankfully, this was a low speed accident,”

said elementary and middle school principal Kyle Freeman. “The student was very lucky to escape the accident with only minor injuries and was released to the Funhouse to wait for his father following an examination by paramedics and a local doctor.” The accident happened just after school let out on Jan. 4. The school busses had just reached the intersection, and many students witnessed the accident. The Sounder has been unable to speak with any adult witnesses who could explain how the accident happened. “He was still under the bike,” said Mik Preysz, who responded to the call. “We got the

car off the bike, and the bike off the child. We just backed [the car] up.” He said there was no real damage to either the bike or the car, and the boy was uninjured, escaping with just a scratched knee. Freeman, PTSA president Holly King and the Funhouse Commons are now discussing the possibility of setting up a volunteer afterschool crossing guard program. Despite the area’s congestion, Preysz said this was the first auto-pedestrian accident he has heard of at that intersection in his 22 years as a responder on Orcas Island.

Spotlight on seniors: potter Trudy Erwin PROFILE OF AN ORCAS ISLAND ARTIST, SENIOR CITIZEN AND FORMER PILOT by MEREDITH M. GRIFFITH Staff reporter

Trudy Erwin in her studio, The Right Place Pottery.

Trudy Erwin worked as a machinist’s mate during World War II, repairing fabric-encased bi-planes banged up by male cadets just beginning to earn their wings. “They would crumple up the planes quite often, and it was our job to put them back on the line,” she said of her time at Glenview Naval Air Station, near Chicago. “They would wreck the propellors, break off the wing tips and scuff up the fabric.” At times the cadets would take the ladies up for a ride. “Of course, after that I wanted to learn how to fly,” she says. At age 20, Erwin served for nearly three years in the WAVES, “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service,” a program begun under Eleanor Roosevelt in 1942. After the war was over, Erwin and her mother, Julia Crandall, took a jaunt up from Seattle to explore Orcas Island. “We were enthralled with the place,” Erwin said. They spent many summers in the islands, and in 1952 they heard that Orcas Island Pottery was for sale. The next year they bought it for $7,500 from Joe and Marclay Sherman, who spent a month teaching them how to throw pots on the wheel, slip-trail decorate, use pottery molds and fire up the kiln. Erwin met Bob Petris at a party celebrating the war’s end. They

married in 1947 and daughters Diana and Sidney were born soon after. In 1965 a job transfer took the couple to California. Pottery continued to spin steadily through Erwin’s days, as she ran a mug shop until 1985. Erwin has always loved to teach others how to do pottery. “It’s the most fun I think I could have,” she said. “When they get going and get thrilled, it’s a big thrill for me.” Her passion for crafting objects surfaced around age four. When her mom, a writer, sent her three kids outside to play, Erwin would crouch in the yard making little dishes out of mud. Crandall was soon keeping plasticene around to busy Erwin’s little hands.

Learning to fly In 1967 Erwin’s husband left the marriage – and that’s when she says she started learning to fly. Soon after earning her pilot’s license, she met her second husband – Wally Erwin, a chemist at UC Berkely. “He was such a good friend and helper,” said Trudy. “He was so complex, and so knowledgeable at so many things.” Trudy had spent many summers helping at Orcas Island Pottery, but in 1977 her mom and daughter Sidney were running the shop full-tilt, so Erwin purchased the

His exploits are arguably oneof-a-kind. Yet another dubious distinction can be pinned on Whidbey Island’s most notorious native son. Under his Dec. 16 sentencing in an Island County courtroom, Colton Harris-Moore was ordered to serve seven years and three months and pay a higher amount of restitution than any other convicted property-crime felon in San Juan County history. Required restitution for the 20-year-old’s 17 property crime felonies in San Juan County totals $272,648. “It is the largest property restitution case ever,” said county prosecutor Randy Gaylord, now in his 16th year. Larger monetary awards have been handed down in San Juan County, but they were of a “civil” nature. An Orcas Island couple was awarded $4.2 million in damages six years ago as a result of a

Ted Grossman spearheads Icy islanders Parkinson’s support group by MEREDITH M. GRIFFITH Staff reporter

mation and announcements. Now, facing Parkinson’s disease, Grossman has once again taken the lead to draw folks together through an Orcas Island Parkinson’s support group. “I’m not a doctor, Grossman says. “But I can be like a cheerleader and an encourager. He sees his newly formed group as a way for those fighting the disease to find advice, new ideas, and encouragement in their personal circumstances. Grossman and his wife Kay owned newspapers in Waterville, Wash. and Nyssa, Ore. before they bought the Islands’ Sounder in 1985. They sold the paper to Sound Publishing in 1994, but Ted continued as editor until retiring in 2006. Since he dropped off the Sounder’s pages, Ted has traveled to Hungary to research his family history, writing stories for

the Jewish Genealogical International Conference. Ted’s dad immigrated from Hungary in 1925 at age 15. He couldn’t speak a word of English, and was placed in 4th grade. Ted’s research also unearthed painful history. “My grandmother, four or five uncles, four or five aunts, and most painful of all, some little kids were all killed in the Holocaust, Ted said. His first cousins, girls ages eight and 12, were gassed at Auschwitz. Ted forged friendships in Hungary, and said many people there felt sorrow for the past. Now back on Orcas Island, Ted is putting his friendly spirit to good use in his Parkinson’s support group. “[The group is] based on the notion that if people sit down together and talk, people can come out of this much healthier, Ted said. The disease currently has no cure. “Hopefully in my lifetime [it] will be cured, but in the meantime our hopes are that we can [mitigate] symptoms and encourage people to live longer, happier and more comfortable. Eminent Parkinson’s expert Dr. Monique Giroux will speak to the group on Jan. 18, at 1 p.m. at the Orcas senior center.

DH fire station: then and now Orcas Fire ambulance now housed at station 24 by PATRICK SHEPLER Orcas Fire Division Chief

Deer Harbor’s Station 24 is finally structurally complete – externally. It is ready for the long winter and the safe housing of your community emergency vehicles. Chief Harris reminded us at a recent staff meeting that it is important to document, record and codify in order to create a “history of where we were and where we are now. This is much like what I say to students when we document patient care. I like to think of it as the FDR Method: what we “found, what we “did, and what the “results were. We found an aging, cold, non-earthquake-proof, cinderblock box in Deer Harbor. This old box was not capable

of housing enough emergency vehicles to accomplish the mission of community protection and not capable of sheltering supplies or any emergency personnel. To create this history, we must put some names to the “we. This project would never have come to fruition without the almost entirely uncompensated help of neighbors like: Clyde Duke, Barbara Bedell, Bob Phalan, Mike Harris, Paul Turner, Dwight Guss, Jim Coffin, Kevin and Carol McCoy, and Ann Remington. What these citizens of Orcas Island – and others too numerous to mention – did was work tirelessly and often against passionate opposition, to create a cost effective and aesthetic fire station that will serve the Deer Harbor

and Spring Point communities into the foreseeable future. The station is not yet complete on the inside. It will take additional labor, but it is ready to go and currently houses both a fire engine and water tender. Together, these units can provide excellent fire protection to the community. We have moved our oldest ambulance, Aid 24, out to the Deer Harbor Station. It will be available for use as needed and will be in a safe and separate location from our main station. It may see use during fires and long emergency calls, during bad weather or a rendezvous with the paramedic unit responding from Eastsound in the event of a severe weather or seismic event. It is important to understand that the presence of an ambulance does not mean the station is staffed. This ambulance is just another “tool in our toolbox, ready to protect our community.

‘Island Enterprise Lab’ to be launched The first big programming effort of the new Funhouse Commons will begin Jan. 17 as it rolls out the Island Enterprise Lab. The focus of this adult program will be community and economic development. “Our first goal is to find ways to expand the usefulness of our facilities, said Funhouse Commons director Pete Moe. “One way we can do this is by becoming a hub for shared resources, technology, and knowledge. The Island Enterprise Lab’s first session will be a structured brainstorming forum, which will attempt to identify shared goals, needs, and resources for Orcas Island. Moe says they have “tossed around a lot of ideas about

how to support an upstart entrepreneurial community on the island. “From organizing small business development classes, to creating a business mentoring project, to bringing in cutting-edge technology like super-fast internet and 3-D printers. Everything is on the table, he said. The Funhouse Commons leadership loves the idea of becoming a small business incubator, supporting local industries of all types, from software to farming. “ The Funhouse Commons is unique on Orcas, and it has some valuable resources that we want to leverage, said Commons board president Eric Youngren. “We have

an incredible and versatile space, technology of all kinds, and a great staff to make ideas into things that actually happen. I am really interested in focusing just on Orcas. I believe that island-centric, sustainable thinking is the way we need to go from here. Not just in business, but everything – public services, too. From education to energy, utilities to garbage collection. Hopefully the Island Enterprise Lab can be a forum for these ideas. In order to gauge public interest in the ‘Enterprise

Lab’ idea, the Commons has set up an online survey at www.thefunhouse.org. The Island Enterprise Lab will meet Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The meeting is free to attend. Dinner, provided by The Kitchen, will be available. The cost is $10 adults, $5 for kids. RSVP for dinner through the online survey or by calling 376-7177 by Monday, Jan. 16. Childcare will also be provided with a donation to The Funhouse Commons suggested.

t was an accident that very easily could have ended in tragedy. Last week, an elementary student was struck by a vehicle while riding his bike through the intersection after school was let out. He was not wearing a helmet, but because the driver was going at such a low speed, the young man’s injuries were minor. We cannot stress how important it is for bicyclists – young and old – to wear a helmet. This past summer, as the weather turned more favorable, we were appalled at how many bicyclists were traversing island roads without helmets. Orcas Fire Division Chief Val Harris said kids, preteens and teens are most likely to not wear a helmet, while adults and young children tend to put on protective headgear. Why is it so important to wear a helmet? It shields a precious commodity – your brain. It is the single most effective way to prevent a life-threatening head injury. Even if you take a minor tumble on your bike, cranial impact with the ground can be serious. It’s much better to have a helmet buffering the impact between your noggin and rock-hard asphalt. There is currently no state law requiring helmet use. While some cities and counties have local helmet ordinances, San Juan County is unfortunately not one of them. So that means it up to you to use a little common sense. If you do hit a hard surface with your bike helmet, make sure to replace it, as helmets lose their capacity to absorb shock after taking serious hits. It may seem like no big deal to hop on your bike and pedal into Eastsound without a helmet. Yet all it takes is one car, one rock or one glance off the roadway to change everything. The young bicyclist was very, very lucky not to have sustained more serious damage. Let his accident be a reminder of how quickly your life can be altered.

The 50 percent reduction in misdemeanor prosecution is a good choice if it forces the legal system to be more selective in cases they choose to pursue. Hopefully it will become more streamlined and efficient. I’ve lived in San Juan County for a good part of 18 years and have had one direct and one indirect encounter with the law. Both of those regrettable experiences resulted in an opinion: The said system was inefficient and wasted taxpayers’ time, money, and natural resources (paper). The cases I was involved in were a misdemeanor and a criminal charge. After a huge pile of paperwork and public servants’ time, one was a not guilty verdict (after three days of a jury trial). This case was clearly a “he said, she said situation and should not have been pursued. The other I pleaded guilty to, so I didn’t have to or couldn’t afford to fight city (county) hall. That case required a huge amount of time and resources just to deal with a misdemeanor case, which could easily have doubled if I had challenged it. Mikial Denker Orcas Island

Giving Tree makes a difference for families In light of the Giving Tree successes, I would like to share this letter that was sent to Orcas Family Connections. “Thank you to everyone who gave gifts to children through the community tree at Island Market, or donated presents through Kaleidoscope this year. CAO letter writer was misinformed I found Liza Michaelson’s letter (Don’t Water Down CAO Protections, Dec. 30, 2011 ) – which argues that San Juan County needs to “make global headlines by enacting a CAO “extreme in its protections – appalling in its ignorance of the facts and the law relevant to the question of whether our county ordinances require radical change in order to protect our critical areas. Ms. Michaelson acknowledges the “striking and “pristine beauty of our islands, which in itself suggests that the stewardship and generosity of our citizens, together with the existing critical areas regulations, have accomplished exactly what is required to maintain those pristine conditions. Nevertheless, she concludes that we need new, “extreme rules to protect our critical areas. There are two very fundamental problems with Ms. Michaelson’s position. First, no one has shown that our current CAO rules do not

adequately protect the functions and values of our critical areas. Absent such a showing, there is no legal (or rational) basis for changing them. Second, a substantial number of the privately owned parcels in the county (I have heard estimates approaching 50 percent) are undeveloped. The proposed changes, which do not “water down the existing CAO but substantially increase its burdens, would keep many, if not most, of them from being “developed (i.e., having a home built on them). Ms. Michaelson seems untroubled that the owners of these parcels could not build the homes (or barns, or gardens, or orchards) for which they bought the parcels in the first place. Happily, the Constitution protects those hapless folks. The county either must show a rational relationship between these new restrictions and threatened harm to critical areas, or pay the owners for the loss of use of their land. I am not sure which is more troubling: the financial exposure of the county if it takes this ill-considered course and renders unbuildable such a large portion of the county or what it says about how we are willing to treat our neighbors, i.e., “We’re here, we have our homes and barns and docks, now pull up the drawbridge and keep all those other people from building homes. We are still waiting for sciencebased, specific indications of harm currently being done to the functions and values of our existing critical areas. The county council promised us proof. The bureaucrats promised us proof. The wellcompensated consultants promised us proof. One year later, we have been given none. Peg Manning Orcas

TRUDY FROM 1

2012: the year we shatter silence by KIM BRYAN Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services

In the month of December, DVSAS and the local Sheriff ’s office hosted community discussion forums on each island with the challenging topic of child sexual abuse. The attendance at each meeting was small. Maybe people are thinking: “I am not surprised your turnout was small, you have to understand that we just don’t talk about that kind of stuff here on our islands. On average only about 10 percent of sexual abuse victims ever report the crime. Or, “Really, cut us some slack, we just don’t have that issue here, so why should we spend time talking about it? One in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused by the time they reach their 18th birthday. “Well okay, we might have some sexual abuse here but it is not as bad as the big cities where they have all those crimes by strangers. More than 90 percent of child sexual abuse victims know and trust their abuser. What might be dangerous about this kind of thinking? Could having this sense of safety without all of the facts lull us into a place of complacency or inaction? Could this be allowing our children to live with burning secrets that they don’t have the voice to share and ask for the help they so desperately need? Could we have adults living among us who have had to live with that burning secret for years because we like to believe the lie that this kind of stuff doesn’t happen here? We all know that any change in a community takes time and starts small. With this in mind the groups of interested community members that met on each island have determined to persevere and invite their fellow community members to join them and DVSAS in the fight to protect our children from sexual abuse. Won’t you join us in making a difference in the lives of our children on these beautiful shores? “What, you might ask, “can I do to make a differ-

ence in such a huge and ugly problem? Whether you have children or not, you can take an active role in protecting the innocent among us. Ask the organizations in your area that work with children about their policies regarding child sexual abuse, adult/ child contact, reporting procedures etc. Invite a DVSAS Advocate to speak at your club, or civic organizations, workplace, place of worship, schools, preschools and daycare centers. Being a community that talks about these difficult issues will shatter the silence that allows it to continue. Let’s join together to make 2012 the year we make the safety of our children our number one community priority! Plan now to attend the next community forum meeting on your island. Both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams brought the heat during home games against Mount Vernon. After suffering a disappointing loss in La Conner (45-27) last Tuesday, the Lady Vikings battled back on Jan. 6 to beat the Hurricanes, 60 to 51. The girls’ display of energy was contagious, and the fans caught on. Every player on the team scored, and the team’s rebounding was at its best so far this season with a record high of 43 rebounds. Bella Nigretto led in scoring with 19 points followed closely by Kathryn Tidwell with 14. Together they combined for 22 of the team’s rebounds with 11 each. The boys also beat the Hurricanes during a closely matched game. “All of the team helped out with the score,” said coach Dan Drake. “It was a good, tough game. It was tied at halftime. We fought back and really hustled. The kids enjoyed the win.” The final score was 54-49. The top scorers were Jack Gates with 21 points and Mikail Van Maren with 12. The coaches enourage community members to attend upcoming home games against Darrington on Jan. 13. Girls’ varsity is 3 p.m.; boys play at 4:30 p.m.

Let me put it to you straight. It’s Sammie here, to tell you I better be next in this senior adoption game. If you saw last week’s POW, it was Lily. She’s gone – just like that! Superior Court Judge Vickie Churchill. In the San Juans, the single largest restitution award, $135,267, will go to Avemco Insurance, a Marylandbased aircraft insurer. Avemco carried coverage on an airplane Harris-Moore heisted from the tarmac of the Orcas Island airport and later crash-landed in a field on the Yakima reservation in south-central Washington state. He escaped the rough landing unharmed. The owner of that plane, Bob Rivers of North Bend, a radio personality and part-time Orcas resident, was awarded $47,021 in restitution as well. HarrisMoore was also ordered to pay $27,600 to Global Aerospace, a Californiabased aircraft insurer, and to pay Eastsound’s Island Market $11,550 for damages.

An Orcas Island couple was awarded $10,500 in restitution from a theft and break-in and a San Juan Island couple, whose boat Harris-Moore swiped from its moorage on Cape San Juan, was awarded $7,900. Though terms of a federal plea bargain prevent HarrisMoore from personally profiting from the telling of his story, he is expected to pay the court-ordered restitution out of proceeds from book or movie deals. His total amount of restitution is estimated at $1.3 million. Harris-Moore is slated to be sentenced in federal court in Jan. 27, where, prior to his Dec. 16 appearance in an Island County courtroom, he pleaded guilty to seven crimes, including bank burglary, interstate transportation of a stolen aircraft and being fugitive in possession of a firearm.

Repair hand tools The Orcas Island Food Masters group invites interested islanders to attend a tool repair workshop on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Deer Harbor. Participants will have an opportunity for hands-on experience as well as viewing demonstrations of handle making and basic agricultural tool repair, led by instructor Dan Borman. The focus will be on making handles for those tools with eyes and for those with tangs that bolt on to the handle. Tool sharpening, things to consider before picking a premade handle, and other miscellaneous repairs will also be covered. Bring one or two tools that need attention and, if possible, their broken handles. Pre-registration for this $20 workshop is required. Call Marta Nielson at 376-2786 or email her at mamamarta1952@gmail.com to register.

Island Living The works of

Thornton Wilder by COLLEEN SMITH ARMSTRONG Editor/Associate Publisher

W

ho better to inspire an island-wide reading event than three-time Pulitzer prize winner Thornton Wilder? Orcas Library is sponsoring “Orcas Reads, a month-long celebration of Wilder’s two famous works: the play “Our Town and the novel “The Bridge of San Luis Rey, which is set in Peru and tells the story of several interconnected people who die in the collapse of a bridge. “Even in this day of always-available communication, island dwellers feel isolated from the rest of the world, said Holly King, public services librarian. “Every birth is a celebration, and every death an examination of where that person fit into the community as a whole. Wilder’s examination of the five lives that were lost upon the collapse of the bridge teaches us that love and personal relationships are of utmost importance in one’s life. Wilder was an American playwright and novelist who received three Pulitzer prizes – one for “The Bridge of San Luis Rey and two for his plays “Our Town and the “Skin of Our Teeth. He also won a National Book Award for his novel “The Eighth Day. He died in 1975. King encourages local book clubs to choose “San Luis Rey as its next selection; free discussion guides are available. The library is hosting a kick-off soiree on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 3:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Parish with Peruvian cooking classes by Christina Orchid and 50 free copies of “San Luis Rey. King asks participants to bring items that represent a “snapshot in time to be included in the library’s display case. “Pick something you would put in a time capsule, she said. There will also be a film showing at Orcas Center and multiple book discussions. Watch for dates in upcoming editions of the Islands’ Sounder.

Production of “Our Town The Friends of Orcas Library and the Orcas Community Foundation are co-funding a production of “Our Town at Orcas Center. The three-act play is a character study of the citizens of an average early 20th century American town. People grow up, get married, live and die. Milk and the newspaper get delivered every morning, and nobody locks their front doors. Wilder set the play in a 1930s theater and used the stage manager’s narration to create the town of Grover’s Corners for the audience. The work defies most conventional theatrical genres. It is neither a comedy nor a tragedy, neither a romance nor a farce. It is a contemplative work concerning the human experience. “Our Town will show on the OffCenter Stage at 7:30 p.m. from Jan. 19 to 21. “The relationships that mature on stage are revealed not by great scenes of action and emotion, but rather by the simple act of conversation, King said. “And through these conversations the world of Grover’s Corners is illuminated. Here on Orcas, we find ourselves checking in with each other over the produce in the market. We see each other in church, at choir, and in the library. Orcas actress and singer Grace McCune is making her directorial debut with help from assistant director Natasha Meskew. The cast is made up of island youth ages eight to 17. The only adult cast member is Antoinette Botsford, who plays the narrator. “She is a master storyteller so she is the perfect person to be telling the story of ‘Our Town,’ McCune said. Cast members are: Sky Bear Aguilar, Sabrina Bailey, Kellen Comrie, Brigid Ehrmantraut, Stormy Hildreth, Sorrel Hughes, Alanna Lago, Cierra Lutz, Clarabeth Smith, Nate Smith, Olivia Smith, Violet Sturk, Tori Sturk, Maggie Thomas, Evelyn Thurman and Meg Waage. The kids have been in rehearsals since the end of

September. They meet three times a week after school and McCune said they have been “really dedicated.â€? “I’ve enjoyed the directing experience,â€? she said. “It’s a fun way of being creative from the other side of things. When I agreed to do it, I thought it would be a great way to expand what I do.â€? Eight-year-old Evelyn Thurman, who is playing “lady in the balcony,â€? said McCune is a great director who “really helps us understand things.â€? McCune says the play has been a learning experience for the kids. “The two lead characters are very young when they meet, and then they fall in love in high school and get married right out of high school,â€? she said. “It’s a different perspective for them to see that’s how it was done back then ‌ we’ve stayed close to the original production of it. The costumes are all from that era. The way it was written, it was really written for that time. The dialogue is not modern. The views expressed, like the politics of the time, are much different than they would be today. So I chose to go with the traditional way of doing it.â€? McCune says Orcas can expect a “really neatâ€? community event. “Thornton wanted to get the message across that while we are alive, we need to live life to the fullest,â€? she said. “That’s the moral of the story.â€?
