Teacup poodle chases black bear up tree A dozen sightings Tuesday morning on Rose Hill in both Kirkland and Redmond BY CARRIE WOOD AND BILL CHRISTIANSON Reporter Newspapers
A
hunter in his spare time, Rose Hill resident Robert Carroll has encountered many bears. But certainly never in his
own backyard. At approximately 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Carroll’s daughter, 21, was sitting on the porch when she heard rustling noises from the corner of the yard at Carroll’s home in the 10700 block of 128th Avenue
Northeast in the Rose Hill neighborhood. When an approximately 200-pound black bear approached her within 15 feet, she yelled, “There’s a bear in the backyard!” Carroll ran outside and thought his daughter could
be mistaking the bear for a dog. But sure enough, it was a bear. Carroll wasn’t the only one to get a backyard visit by the young black bear. There were about a dozen sightings of the bear heading

Kirkland Preschool seeks new owners BY CARRIE WOOD
Almost anything goes at the Kirkland Preschool – even stick bugs. On a recent afternoon, Vivian and Robert Weber were delighted as they watched the creatures that blended in with the greenery in a tank at the preschool.

The Weber’s daughter brought in just one stick bug many years ago and it has since multiplied. The couple was surprised the school still had the bugs. “If I never see another stick bug,” laughed Carolyn Wirkman, the school’s director. She added that at the non-profit Kirkland Preschool, staff tries “lots of

But the preschool now faces the struggle of keeping its doors open once again as the school’s lease is up in June 2012. The families hope to find new ownership of the property and preschool. “Ideally, we would love somebody to take over who thought the same way that would support this kind [ more SCHOOL page 3 ]

www.kirklandreporter.com [ SCHOOL from page 1] of educational opportunity for the neighborhood, said Vivian, whose two daughters attended the school when the two families acquired the property more than 10 years ago. The preschool has been a part of the Kirkland community since 1969, first operating from the basement of Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church near City Hall. The preschool moved in 1993, renting space from Eastlake Assembly of God Church for seven years. But the church ran out of space and the preschool was told it would have to move again. “They didn’t have a home to go to, recalled Robert. “So we said maybe we can marry a deal. If we can find the property, maybe you guys will help fix it up or do whatever it takes to make it work. It was a long process to
get the preschool established at its current site in the Norkirk neighborhood. The two families, whose children attended the school at the time, found the former Montessori site was for sale for more than $550,000. They agreed to lend the purchase money, offering the preschool a 10-year lease for $1,200 per month. “But it needed a phenomenal amount of work, said Robert, noting a few core people helped to renovate the site, including Glen and Galen Page of Page & Beard Architects, who provided pro bono architectural work and practical advice on working with the city. The preschool also took out a loan to do a further $140,000 in repairs. “When we went into the building, it was just like the children had just left that day, recalled Baskin. “It was just eerie. It had been on the
market for two years and we had to go through the zoning process. During the renovation and zoning process, the preschool temporarily moved to Kirkland Junior High for more than a year, operating out of an old portable and science room. Wirkman said there was no playground and the students had to go to the commons area to play games before junior high students were let out of class. In the meantime, the families went through a lengthy process of traffic studies and public hearings to get the site zoned as a preschool. “We would look at each other sometimes and we’d
say, ‘well, what if we don’t get the zoning?’ Said Basin. “So it was really a leap of faith. Robert said for him, helping out the preschool was about “doing a socially conscious thing. And we didn’t do this just because it was a preschool – this was a special group of ladies. As a stay-at-home dad, Robert would bring his daughters to the preschool and observe the high quality early education the teachers provided. “This is not something you find at every preschool, he added. “So it was a conscious decision to say this is worth supporting because this is as good as it gets.

Connect Kirkland during a treasure hunt/walk Do you know what was found buried at Lakeview Elementary School back in 1996? On Sunday May 22, you may get to find out what’s buried under your feet in Kirkland and what was happening at Carillon Point 100 years ago. You can find out the answers and more during a treasure hunt/walk/run that connects Kirkland neighbors and businesses. By walking on what could one day be a community trail, you’ll get to explore Kirkland in a new and different way. The route will take you down the BNSF corridor, which most people have never had a chance
LETTER Annexation history repeats Every annexation, merger or incorporation has a period of dissension and discord. With Kirkland’s new annexation, it is history repeating itself. Kirkland became a city in 1905 after several failed attempts. King County fought our incorporation and many citizens fought it. Finally on Oct. 7, 1905, Kirkland became a town. We had 400 citizens with only 300 required. Within days, the citizens felt the sticker shock of living in the town of Kirkland. The annual liquor license went from $300 to $800. Kirkland residents could no longer pick up cord wood from the city dock. There was a new dog license and every fam-
to experience. You’ll see fabulous views of the lake, city, and mountains from different vantage points along the walk. You’ll have an opportunity to share in the beauty of the trail as it winds its way through Kirkland neighborhoods. Participants will receive a map and a list of questions that can be answered at stops along the way. The cost for the map is $4. The event is jointly sponsored by the Cascade Orienteering Club and EastsideTrail Advocates. Our goal is to have fun, enjoy the beauty of Kirkland, and experience what could one day be part of the world class trail sys-
tem on the Eastside. Walkability is a key component to today’s livable cities and will continue to be in the future. Let’s help Kirkland take the “path” towards having the BNSF corridor become a trail. A trail will continue to add to the wonderful lifestyle Kirkland offers to all of us who live here. Head over to the South Kirkland Park and Ride on May 22 at 10 a.m. The walk runs from the Park and Ride lot to N.E. 68th in Houghton, which is approximately 3-3.5 miles. The best part is the walk is almost all flat or downhill, so how can you not do it?
ily had at least three dogs. And the cows had to stay home in their pastures. Before incorporation, the cows had a free reign. So what did the new citizens do? They gathered signatures and filed to be dis-incorporated, and it was still 1905! They had the required signatures, but the new city fathers kept the petition from being filed. The petition lapsed and eventually compromises were reached and it is now all a happy robust history. Had Peter Kirk never arrived in 1888, the original Kirkland town site may have remained Houghton. Juanita was the hub of the Eastside waterfront in the 1870’s and early 1880’s. Without Peter Kirk, Juanita may have joined Bothell or incorporated as Juanita. So much changed when Peter Kirk and investors purchased the farmland and plated the town site of Kirkland in 1888. Kirkland became the
hub, the Juanita Bridge was built and the communities joined in spirit and friendship. No matter which way our history has gone, there was always been a period of conflict. And if history continues to repeat itself, it will all work out. Now, this has been history – the cold hard facts. But there is some human interest in history if you care to research deep enough. Kirkland’s two main adversaries during the incorporation/dis-incorporation saga had something special in common. They were fathers. Their children were classmates at Central School, now the site of City Hall. Their son and daughter married in 1917 with Reverend Newberry officiating. Nothing like shared grandchildren to mend fences.

Days
n recent weeks, the focus of proposed state cuts in education has been at the higher education level. State education leaders have lamented major budget cuts to universities, community and technical colleges, which are raising tuition and increasing the enrollment of more out-of-state residents. Colleges statewide are facing program cuts, to possible campus closings, as reductions in state funding looms. We have seen this in Kirkland as Lake Washington Technical College (LWTC) officials have recently scrambled to make up for the roughly 20 percent state funding shortfall they project in 2011-12. LWTC officials are looking at a $2.2-$3 million gap. But we have also seen that budget impacts trickle down to even our littlest learners. In the past several weeks, we have reported on several preschools here in Kirkland that have been affected by state budget cuts. We published a story last week that focused on the Kirkland Co-Op Preschool (KCP) and the Lake Washington Toddler Group (LWTG). The cooperatives, which are part of the Parent Education program at LWTC, offer parents the opportunity to learn alongside their children. One of the enrollment requirements is that parents volunteer and participate in class as well. Students learn how to be better parents and receive credit for their time with the preschool groups. But state level budget cuts have threatened the parenting program, which encompasses seven area preschool cooperatives. The proposal to cut the parenting program would save LWTC about $300,000. Doug Emory, dean of academic core, called it a “massive” cut. We agree. It would impact hundreds of families in the area, potentially increasing tuition for parents already struggling to pay for their child’s preschool. The cuts would also affect children, as parents learn valuable information from the program’s lectures and labs, from discipline to nutrition. The lab gives parents the opportunity to work and play with the children, an opportunity that would be lost without the program. Emory said LWTC’s executive cabinet approved a plan this week that would allow the college to continue being involved in a significant way in the community through the parent education program. He said the college hasn’t worked out all the details yet of how it will support the program, but we hope the plan will allow parents and children to get the most out of the parenting program. We also reported on the “Little Roos” preschool at Lake Washington High School, which closed its doors last month after 25 years in the community. The Lake Washington School District couldn’t keep the program running as it would have costed the district - already impacted by state budget cuts - about $1 million. The preschool program was linked with the high school’s “life skills” child psychology elective. It’s another opportunity lost for high school students to connect with their younger counterparts. We can sit and wait for the state to provide more funding so that it reaches all education levels, but plan to wait a long time. Yes, it’s a bleak future, but that doesn’t mean nothing can be done. In this week’s front cover story on the Kirkland Preschool, two families show how the community can come up with creative ways to solve funding problems at the preschool level. The families pitched in to purchase the preschool’s current site, and offered the preschool a 10-year lease at an affordable rate. While it may be difficult for many to purchase an entire plot of land, think of the potential if several families came together to find a way. The Kirkland Preschool families did, and it has paid off in a decade of continued learning for Kirkland children.

Chandler said agents did not attempt to track down the bear as they felt it may cause more harm than good. “We haven’t tried to track him,” Chandler said. “When they are moving like that and then you start to chase them, they could get hit by a car.” Chandler said the bear has probably made it back to a less populated area because bears, in general, are scared off by loud noises and commotion, such as barking dogs and vehicle traffic. “Hopefully, we won’t hear more about him,” Chandler said.

and productive side of aging in which people get to pursue some of their dreams. This year’s art show will be the biggest one thus far. Last year’s show had work from 45 artists, up from the 25 in 2009, with a total of 84 pieces exhibited. This year 11 new artists have joined the show. Eastside artists who are age 50-plus have been invited to submit their work. The show will exhibit painting, photography, sculpture and quilts. Merrill Gardens has done an excellent job in the past of using the quilts as a backdrop for all the art presented. The show is the result of a volunteer effort from the Kirkland Senior Council, Kathy Feek of the Kirkland Arts Commission, and Merrill Gardens. The show runs from June 10-19 and is in the lobby of Merrill Gardens at 201 Kirkland Avenue in downtown Kirkland. Opening night on the June 10 coincides with Kirkland Art Walk, which has been moved to Friday evenings. Those who attend opening night get to vote for their favorite piece of art in the show.

LW LACROSSE TAKE NO. 5 SEED TO PLAYOFFS The Lake Washington Kangs wrapped up their regular lacrosse season with two losses, entering the post season as the No. 5 seed from the Northwest conference. The Islanders beat Lake Washington 19-5 during the last week of the season. Jake Bernstein put up two goals for the team, while Hank Schmale had one goal and an assist. Jonah Friedl made 14 saves. Later in the week the team lost to Bellevue, 14-5. Jake Bernstein had two more goals, while Cody Bernstein had two of his own. Steven Keppes had a goal and Friedl made four saves. The team began the post season on Tuesday after Reporter deadline, traveling to play No. 4 seed King’s Way in Vancouver. The winner of Tuesday’s game faces Mercer Island, the No. 1 seed, on Friday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at Mercer Island High School.
JUANITA WINS KINGCO, HEADS TO DISTRICTS The Juanita girls softball team wrapped up their regular season with a tournament win in the KingCo event last week. The team, which entered the post season ranked No. 1 in the conference, took the top spot again heading into this week’s SeaKing district tournament. The top five from the district tourney will move on to state. Juanita faced the winner of the Eastside Catholic vs. Chief Stealth game which took place Wednesday. Watch for updates online at www.kirklandreporter. com for the latest results.
t wasn’t until just before the end of the Tuesday’s Metro crossover game that Lake Washington felt they had things in hand. Down 5-3 to Bishop Blanchet in the sixth inning, the Kangs put together a sparkling defensive play to change the tide, and eventually win the game. Lake Washington beat Blanchet 8-5 to earn a berth into the 3A state tournament, beginning this weekend. “It was a back and forth game,” said head coach Derek Bingham. “We just never got over the hump, every time we’d get close they’d score again, but at the top of the sixth Chris Moore threw a guy out at home. We took that momentum and scored five in the bottom of the inning.” With his first pitch in the sixth inning, after relieving start Bob Cruikshank, fellow captain Spencer Jackson allowed a big fly hit, making
it seem as if the Blanchet runner on third was headed home to extend the lead. But Chris Moore made the catch in the outfield, throwing it to catcher Steve Semler, ending the Braves chances at bat. From there the Kangs took control, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the game, and the state berth. “It’s been a goal of ours since the beginning of the season, and the guys were really excited Tuesday night,” said Bingham. “They earned this and now it’s 16 teams and we’re all on equal footing.” Lake Washington will face Hanford on Saturday, May 21 in the first round of the state tournament, in Richland. The game begins at 1 p.m. The team found itself battling for the last berth from District 2 after a KingCo championship game loss to Mount Si. While they lost 1-0 to the Wildcats, Lake Washington turned around and beat
Mercer Island 6-2 in the consolation game to earn their chance against the Braves. Days earlier the Kangs faced Sammamish in the second round of the KingCo tournament, which they won 10-1. That game too required a change of momentum for the team, thanks largely to two home runs from Zach Johnson. “The first one was the biggest one just because we weren’t sure what we were getting offensively,” said Kangs head coach Derek Bingham. “We were kind of struggling, leaving some guys on base and our best guy had just gotten out and then Zach comes up just uncorked it. I think everybody took a sigh of relief and just realized that ‘hey this is just another game’. A lot of these guys are new to the playoffs, so it’s a new experience for them and it’s nice to get that kind of confidence early and then take off from there.”

It was Lake Washington who struck first during the game, battling through the first half with neither team scoring, before Merlin Granados found a chance off an assist from Cornielu Capusan in the 54 minute. But two minutes later Southridge’s Adolfo Garcio connected with Bill Lande-

her life. “I felt I had a near death experience, she told a talk-show host. Having grown up with a family struggling with alcoholism, Cowan prided herself on believing she had escaped from addiction - that is, until she realized her closet eating was a symptom of food addiction. At around 150 pounds, Cowan feels comfortable with her weight today. She also has her food addiction under control. Since that day in the hospital when she met her own mortality, she promised to live for her children (now in college) - not for food. After making a few significant changes to her daily routine, the pounds began to drop fast. She started walking. She no longer skipped breakfast

Rose Cowan has appeared several times on national television to tell the story of her weight loss. Last December, in fact, Oprah flew her on an all-expense paid trip to Australia to recognize her work as a life coach. During that trip – which was highlighted by sailing with actor Russell Crowe - she received yet another call. National Geographic had placed her among their top 10 competitors for an upcoming extreme medical show. However, producers told her the gig was falling through. While such news may seem disheartening to others, it had the opposite reaction on Cowan. In fact, she welcomed it whole-heartedly. “They were interested in my story - they loved my personality and really wanted me to do it - but in the end I wasn’t sick enough, said a cheerful Cowan while on break at Dr. Gavin Dry’s plastic-surgery facility in Kirkland’s Totem Lake neighborhood, where the Puyallup resident works as a medical assistant. “But that’s good because that means I’m too healthy. Up until January 2005, given the same opportunity by Nat Geo, producers may have reached a different decision. But the tradeoff isn’t worth it for Cowan. And here’s the reason why: Today, Cowan isn’t staving off pre-diabetes or high blood pressure - she no longer tops the scale at 310 pounds. As horrific as it was, Cowan attributes redirecting her life to the day her weight led to hospitalization. As she lay there in the hospital, she recalls, she thought she saw the end of
and she stopped drinking soda. She also waited three hours for food to digest before going to bed. She also found local support. Cowan recalls on her morning walks hearing “You go, girl from people she didn’t even know. A reward system also kept her motivated. After meeting her first 25-pound weight-loss goal she rewarded herself with an iPod; she now rewards herself with $300 designer jeans. Soon, audio books playing in her iPod held her interest; they took her focus away from walking, which grew from short block walks into mile-long walks and then into half marathons. Even now, Cowan reserves Sundays for what she calls her pilgrimage – the day when her husband drops her off in Orting and treks the 13 miles back to her home. During her pilgrimage she meditates on God, thanking him for each step she takes. As her own self coach, she repeats motivational phrases that have proved successful in her new role as a motivational speaker. But despite the massive weight loss, Cowan still experienced problems. She didn’t feel beautiful. She had what many other morbidly obese people have after losing a great deal of weight: excess skin.

This project involves 10.12 acres of soil disturbance for construction activities associated with a 51 lot single-family subdivision, including demolition of an existing home, site grading, construction of underground utilities, a stormwater detention and water quality facility, roads, sidewalks, and detached homes with landscaping. Stormwater will be discharged to an unclassified King County stream tributary to the Sammamish River, after it has been routed through the proposed onsite detention and water quality facility.
