S

usan Schwarz may have been the queen of her father’s heart, but it was her place as the queen of hearts in a deck of playing cards that may have led to finding her murderer 32 years after her death. Kirkland resident Henry Schwarz, 82, has had to forget Oct. 22, 1979 to continue living. But now he knows the man who is the alleged killer that took his daughter. “Truly, it was the only way I could deal with it,” said Schwarz, about trying to forget. “I had to play like it never happened. I buried it so deep now it is just words.”

The 57-year-old suspect, Greg D. Johnson was arrested on April 22 at his Seattle home in connection with the murder of the Bothell High School graduate. “His bail was originally set at $1 million, but they have increased it,” said Schwarz. Earth Day brings 4,500 lady bugs About 80 preschoolers squealed as they huddled in the grass picking up ladybugs and watching the insects crawl up their arms and legs during an Earth Day event at Evergreen Academy in Kirkland on April 22. School staff, students, parents and media gathered for the event, as 4,500 ladybugs were released into the schoolyard environment to improve vegetation health. Students wore festive Earth Day t-shirts created by Evergreen Academy’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Principal Carrie Stull cut open several packets of ladybugs and shook the insects out as preschoolers scampered into the grass. “They tickle,” laughed 4-year-old Nermin Galesic. “I’m bringing the ladybugs back to their home,� she said. Stull said staff came up with the idea from one of Evergreen Academy’s sister schools in another state. The Kirkland campus opened last January. “We thought it was a great idea,� she said. Leading up to the Earth Day event, students learned that ladybugs feed on plant lice and other insects that are harmful to gardens, trees and shrubs. “They eat pesticides,� Stull said of the ladybugs. “So it’s important to keep them near dirt – which I didn’t know until now.� Aside from the morning’s excitement, even the youngest knew what the Earth Day event was all about. “We put the ladybugs in the dirt,� described 3-year-old Jenna Michalek-Johnson. “They’re going to clean up.�

She said that when she was 8 years old she went out to look at Sputnik and it changed her life. After that experience she would always look for books by authors such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. She said that she had all of her friends convinced she was an alien because she knew all the terminology. “The phrase that always stumped them was ‘I am from the third planet from the sun.’ I hope you all get that,” Dunbar said to a room full of laughter. But it was the reply from a teacher, Mr. Miller, that helped to set her on her course. “He said I could not build or fly a spaceship without algebra,” said Dunbar, who in turn taught herself algebra. At the end of high school she wrote to NASA but was denied entry and was told she needed a college education. She applied to Caltech and was told they did not accept women and a second university was too expensive for her family to afford. Dunbar was eventually accepted at the University of Washington where she used the ACT Scholarship, set up by the federal government to help in the space race. Eventually she would get a job at NASA working on the space shuttle. In 1977 NASA opened up the astronaut program to women and Dunbar was accepted in 1980. “It was people around me that made the difference,” said Dunbar, who is the executive director of Wings Over Washington. “Engineers transform our world.” Dunbar’s final message to the attendees was an acronym SRU - Self Replacement Unit - in reference to helping current students with their education. “We all have a duty to replace ourselves,” said Dunbar. After the event Dunbar said that events such as the Foundation benefit are extremely important to her. “There has to be a mechanism to support students,” said Dunbar. “Every student should learn math, science and chemistry because that is the world around us,” said Dunbar. The event also gave Lake Washington School District Superintendent Chip Kimball a chance to promote the

district’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program. The event is designed to raise money for the district’s programs and grants. “We are faced with one of the most difficult economic times in our history,” said Kimball, citing the loss of $10 million in state funds in the past three years. “We have a compelling vision that every student will be prepared when they graduate high school. Our priority is our children.” Kimball himself wrote

with a single-minded focus and purpose, which is to keep you safe and safeguard your quality of life. The Kirkland Police Department’s traffic safety philosophy is straightforward: we simply don’t want people dying or being seriously injured on our roadways. Changing poor driving behavior is a fundamental factor to community safety, and a highly visible traffic enforcement program is a critical element to our community safety priority. There is no

denying that traffic enforcement reduces accidents and enhances safety. The men and women of the Kirkland Police Department are committed to providing the greatest degree of safety they can for Kirkland. Highly visible traffic enforcement is an important tool in community safety. Numerous studies have shown that a highly visible police presence reduces crimes in other areas, such as property crimes, assaults and burglaries. Rep. Ross Hunter stands up for our littlest learners As a Kirkland resident and constituent, I am writing to thank Rep. Ross Hunter for maintaining funding for ECEAP in the recently released House budget. Hunter has always been a true champion for early education and his recent heroic efforts to stave off cuts to ECEAP despite the budget crisis need to be lauded. ECEAP is our state’s premier preschool program. It provides a range of comprehensive education, health, nutrition, parent involvement, and family support services

to at-risk children and their families in communities throughout our TUBUF .PSF UIBO DIJMESFO attend ECEAP in Washington, with BOPUIFS FMJHJCMF GPS UIF QSP gram, but unable to attend because of a lack of funding. Study after study has found that children who have attended high quality early education programs like ECEAP are more likely to be ready for school, more likely to graduate from high school, and have a reduced need for costly special education and intervention services. Economists have found that high quality early education generates a Return on Investment (ROI) that could make even hedge fund managers envious. For every $1 invested in programs like ECEAP, Washington reaps a ROI ranging from $7-$9. James Heckman, a Nobel Laureate in economics at the University of Chicago, said recently that “every dollar invested in early childhood FEVDBUJPO SFUVSOT DFOUT BOOVBMMZ for the life of the child. An average BOOVBM JOWFTUNFOU JO IJHI quality preschool for one child, for instance, using the formula for compounding simple interest, would

I am hopeful that with champions like Rep. Ross Hunter behind us the program can continue to grow.

A good recipe will teach you to cook to the point where you are creating your own recipes. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Mistakes, even disasters, happen during the cooking process, so don’t let them get to you. When you forget to add the mushrooms that you were so excited about trying to your soup, or when you realize that you seasoned your casserole with sugar instead of salt, just remember, it happens to everyone who is brave enough to cook. Most mistakes can be fixed,

and as for those that are irreversible, just keep in mind, it’s only food! You’ll get the chance to redeem yourself when you cook dinner again tomorrow night. Don’t let on that you made a mistake. When mistakes do happen, keep in mind, only you, the cook, knows that your original intention was to serve that food any other way. So when your diners are happily chowing down and complimenting your culinary prowess, don’t jump to inform them that you meant to do things differently. Why would they need to know that? Accept compliments. The whole modesty thing is totally overrated. When people compliment your cooking, even rave about it, smile and thank them. They

The man would not calm down once placed in a patrol car and was moved to a corrections van for transport.

The wife confirmed the incident upon contact and the man was arrested, refusing to answer officer’s questions. Malicious mischief: 12:40 a.m., 111 Central Way. A 28-year-old Kirkland man was arrested for malicious mischief and criminal trespass after he kicked the front door, breaking out a window at the Wilde Rover. The man was upset because he was asked to leave after passing out in his chair. The man provided a blood alcohol level of .225.

April 15 DUI: 2:23 a.m., 300 Central Way. A 24-yearold Kirkland man was contacted after he was observed driving down Central Way then parking abruptly at the White Swan. He performed poorly on the field sobriety test and submitted a blood alcohol content of .183. Malicious mischief: 2:40 p.m., 300 Central Way. A 42-year-old King County man was stopped in traffic on Third Street when his girlfriend’s 17-year-old son rushed to the driver side of the truck and attempted to assault the man. The boy also threatened to kill the man. When the man attempted to drive the truck away the boy hit the rear passenger door causing damage. The boy was later arrested. Domestic: 4:29 p.m., 200 Main Street. A verbal domestic dispute occurred between a man and a woman over being evicted from Tent City.

Kirkland man charged with molesting Kent 4 year old in 2004 BY MATT PHELPS mphelps@kirklandreporter.com

A Kirkland man has been charged with first-degree child molestation, accused of sexual contact with the 4-year-old daughter of a friend while babysitting the girl in Kent in 2004. John Brian Hoskin, 40, was charged April 18 in King County Superior Court. According to charging documents, the girl recently told a school counselor about the incidents. The counselor contacted the victim’s mother, who said that Kent Police were notified of the incident in 2004 but that no report was filed. The mother was told by police at the time that the incident would be documented, but that there was not enough evidence to investigate a crime, according to charging documents. Prosecutors allege that Hoskin initiated inappropriate touching with the girl on several occasions. According to court documents, a former nanny for the girl told police that Hoskin would “repeatedly invade the girl’s personal space, and felt it was a manipulation or grooming tactic.� She also reported that the girl told her Hoskin would touch her in the bath, watch her in the bath and used the restroom while she was in the bathtub. After being notified by school counselors of the alleged abuse, Kirkland Police arrested Hoskin at his residence. Hoskin, who has no known criminal history, is being held on a $25,000 bail. Arraignment is set for May 2.

The Metropolitan King County Council will hold a public hearing on May 9 to take testimony on a proposed ordinance 2011-0179, transferring parks, roads and greenbelt-related properties from King County to the City of Kirkland due to annexation. An agreement between the city and county was reached to make the transfer as part of the county’s annexation initiative. In a game that was much closer on the field than on the score board, the Mercer Island soccer team earned a convincing 8-1 win over Juanita on Tuesday evening. The first half opened strong for the Islanders, with Alex Wood’s first goal of the night off an assist from Jordan Morris less than a minute into the match. Wood would go on to add two more for Mercer Island during the game. Juanita Nick Horne scored in the eighth minute of the match to tie the game momentarily at 1-1. But Mercer Island quickly regain their score board control, adding five more to end the first half with a 6-1 lead thanks to goals from Wood, Jack Michale and Morris. The Rebels kept pace with Mercer Island in the second half, earning shooting chances and lengthy possessions, but in the 59 minute Levi Kloss, assisted by Matt Grohnke, found the

ARTS The ARTisan Gourmet is a series of fun, handcrafted food events sponsored by the Kirkland Cultural Council.
