Husband of coach confessed to setting up video camera for “sexual gratification” BY MATT PHELPS mphelps@kirklandreporter.com

T

he husband of a Juanita High School volleyball coach has been charged with voyeurism in a case involving many of the coach’s players. Kirkland resident Steve C. Meeks, 23, is accused of videotaping five victims while in a restroom during a non-high school sanctioned team sleepover on Nov. 5, according to charging documents. He was arrested Nov. 9. Meeks confessed to placing a camera in the warehouse bathroom for his “sexual gratification,” according to court records. A judge set his bail at $25,000, despite not having a criminal record. The state has requested a no contact

order for Meeks and the minors involved. He is currently out of custody, pending arraignment on Jan. 26 at the King County Court House. Lake Washington School District spokesperson Kathryn Reith said, “No one should be subject to the kind of invasion of privacy that happened to a group of Juanita High School student athletes. We are proud of the students for immediately reporting this crime and appreciate the fast work of the King County Sheriff ’s officers in making an arrest.” The Reporter attempted to contact Meeks for comment but the number listed in court documents has been disconnected. Two teens hit by driver on Kirkland’s Finn Hill BY MATT PHELPS mphelps@kirklandreporter.com

Kirkland police say that alcohol and icy roads combined for an accident on Sunday evening in the 7900 block of N.E. 122 Place on Finn Hill in Kirkland. Two teens, who were walking on the side of the road, were struck by a pickup truck traveling westbound around 5 p.m. The driver of the pickup, a 48-year-old man, was ar-

rested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular assault. The Kirkland police said that one of the teens, a 17-yearold boy, was transported to Evergreen Hospital with a cut on his head. The injuries were not lifethreatening. The second teen was not injured. The road has been extremely treacherous during this year’s snowfall and is known for being dangerous during icy weather.

Members of the Eastside community gathered Jan. 10 to meet Dr. Traci Pierce, the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) board of directors’ preferred candidate for its next superintendent, and ask her questions about her views on K-12 education. The event, held in the Bytes Cafe at City Hall in Redmond, was an opportunity for people to meet and mingle with Pierce in an informal setting. About

two dozen people attended, a number Pierce was happy with as she understands people have busy schedules. “I was pleased with the turnout,” said Pierce, who has been with LWSD for 17 years and is currently the deputy superintendent of instructional services. Pierce may potentially replace current superintendent Dr. Chip Kimball, who is leaving at the end of the school year to be superintendent of the Singapore American School. During the evening, a hidden video camera was spotted in the ceiling tile of the woman’s bathroom by a 17-year-old high

The coach’s mother then contacted the warehouse manager, according to court records. The manager located the camera, which was identified as the camera from the surveillance system bought by the company to set up in the warehouse. He then dismantled the system and after assisting the volleyball team out of the warehouse, contacted the King County Sheriff ’s Department, the documents continue. The camera was found

The investigation found that Meeks was the one who had access to the facility and placed the camera in the women’s bathroom. Meeks claimed that his intensions were to “spy” on a female co-worker who he knew would be using the restroom on the following Monday, however he was aware of the volleyball party, assisted in setting up the party for his wife and knew the girls would be spending the night using the bathroom, court documents said.

State does bait-andswitch on Kirkland

K

Yes: 36% No: 63%

irkland Mayor Joan McBride recently told the Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce that the proposed bill in Olympia to slash the Annexation Sales Tax Credit (ASTC) would devastate the city’s budget. In her speech, she called on the state to keep its “promise”to cities that stepped up to help counties and the state during financially difficult times for everyone. But these are not broken promises. In a legal business context it could be considered fraud. It is a time-tested and underhanded way of doing business, called bait-and-switch. The ASTC was set up to help cities with the cost of taking over unincorporated county lands. Most of these areas are residential neighborhoods with limited sales-tax revenues. The ASTC was a way to give these cities a greater piece of the tax pie in order to fund the transition. It was also implemented in a limited way. The ASTC is only good for 10 years, giving cities time to find new sources of revenue to eventually replace the ASTC. Instead, the state got what it wanted, annexations of more than 100,000 residents, and is now doing more than just breaking promises. The state is putting public safety at risk. For many cities, the loss of the ASTC is devastating. It has even led some cities, which have not completed their annexations, to threaten to pull out of the deal. For Kirkland, which annexed the Kingsgate, North Juanita and Finn Hill neighborhoods last June, that is not an option. The governor’s proposal hits Kirkland hardest for two reasons. The first is that Kirkland’s annexation of 31,000 residents is the largest single annexation to receive the ASTC. The second is that the bill calls for a cap to the ASTC based on the first year’s revenue. Kirkland’s first year of ASTC payments began September 2011 and will end June 2012. That is 10 months and not 12, cutting the amount the

city would get another 17 percent. Overall, the city stands to lose 35 percent of the ASTC originally “promised.”But legislation should not just be looked at as a promise, especially in this case. That 35-percent cut to annexation revenues will have to come from somewhere. It could come from parks, development services, public works or utilities. But in all reality some will have to come from public safety as it is 57 percent of the cost of annexation. This also puts the city in a difficult position as it did promise pre-annexation Kirkland residents that they would not subsidize the new neighborhoods. So if that 35-percent has to come solely from the new neighborhoods, services would drop dramatically. Even if the city does choose that route, as opposed to finding the funds city wide, it will ultimately cost all the citizens of Kirkland. Reducing police staff in the annexation area does not mean that the city won’t

respond to calls. So if a call comes in on Finn Hill that needs a great deal of resources, someone in Houghton may not see emergency personnel as fast if they dial 911 at that time. Most people, Republican, Democrat, Independent or whatever, believe that public safety should be the government’s first priority. By taking these “promised”funds away from cities, the state is diminishing public safety to save other less-important programs. The state baited cities into going through with very costly annexations in order to shore up its budgets. It is time for the state to keep its “promise”to cities that have stepped up and stop committing fraud against partner cities that have tried to do their part. It is also time for Kirkland citizens to let their legislators know how they feel about this proposed bill. Contact 48th District Rep. Ross Hunter at 360-786-7936 or 425453-3064 or via email at ross.hunter@leg.wa.gov.

520 is Disneyland on pontoons Staff Writer Matt Phelps wonders why people are so disdainful of the tolls on SR 520 (Jan. 13 editorial). Let me respond to your uninformed observations. First, people question tolling I-90 to prop up the tolling of 520 because they were concerned about that eventuality back when the end of tolling on the old Evergreen Point Floating Bridge was in sight. Laws were passed to codify the principle that you shouldn’t toll one route to support another, and people made long-term decisions about where to locate a business, buy a home, etc. based on those laws. But Matt has drunk the DOT’s grape Kool-Aid when it comes to describing what’s going on along the 520 corridor as a “replacement.” A replacement would be to have a new, four-lane bridge constructed, assembled, and floated into place. This could have happened years ago with funds that the DOT had in hand. A slightly better replacement would have been to build a new bridge just

enough wider to provide for a breakdown lane on each shoulder, giving disabled cars a place to pull over and allowing emergency responders to more quickly reach accidents and medical emergencies. What we are getting as a “replacement” is, instead, Disneyland on pontoons with new lanes for transit, pedestrians, and bicycles. We’re building massive lids on the Eastside, so where bridges once stood there will be parks and traffic circles. On the Seattle side, where they don’t have a clue as to how to fund another $2-billion-plus to complete their “vision,” the DOT will be putting in a 1400-foot long lid to make it both pretty and quiet for those folks. The DOT even “volunteered” some $22-million in 520 funds so the UW could turn an $8-million pedestrian overpass into a grand “front porch.” The $22-million represents five months worth of tolls, so why not give it away? Maybe Matt can explain why the SR 99 tunnel beneath Seattle is so worthy of tolling, too. After all, it will have fewer lanes, no downtown exits or on-ramps, and allow other people to enjoy the windfall of better views and property development opportu-

nities. Why avoid paying tolls on 520? Because this so-called “replacement” is jam-packed with goodies for just about everyone except the motoring public that’s paying for it.

Disappointed at new dog park rules Like many Kirkland residents, I was looking forward to taking my dogs to the new off-leash park in Kirkland. My boys love to go to other off-leash parks in the area and enjoy interacting with other dogs. Unfortunately, I recently learned that the Kirkland park will not allow unneutered male dogs regardless of their breed or temperament. I have never heard of such a restriction in a dog park and am disappointed that KDOG decided to go this route. At least we can still go to Redmond.

Jeff Jared’s column is one trick pony I would like to ask the Reporter why

they provide regular column space to Jeff Jared? I understand that a newspaper should allow for the expression of a wide variety of views, even fringe views like those regularly expressed by Jared. The problem is that Jared is the opinion column equivalent of the “one trick pony”; he has essentially one opinion on every issue and that’s that we privatize everything. That’s all he brings to the table and I think we’ve all figured out that this represents his opinion on every issue. Unless he can provide more substance than that I see no reason to provide him with a soapbox from which he can beat the same drum over and over again, month after month. Mr. Jared should certainly be able to write a letter to the editor like everyone else but it certainly seems to me that providing him special privileges as a regular columnist can no longer be justified. Please consider replacing his column with someone else who can provide a different perspective on the issues and can provide some more food for thought on the issues.

Kirkland businesswoman stands tall with life stories BY ANDY NYSTROM Reporter Newspapers

Diana DeAndrea-Kohn’s writing was ready for a breakout. For a long time, the Kirkland businesswoman kept her stories inside, not even showing them to her husband. But about 1 1/2 years ago, she set a goal: to get one of her pieces published and share it with the world. The 41-year-old business owner not only achieved that goal, but now has two stories — “My Gift From God and “Here I Stand — secured within the pages of the popular and “inspiring Chicken Soup for the Soul series. “Here I Stand is one story that is especially close to the writer’s heart, she says. On page 291 of Chicken Soup’s “Find Your Happiness

edition, DeAndrea-Kohn writes about being pregnant at age 19, marrying her boyfriend and having everyone tell her that they’d never make it. She proved them all wrong over time. “As I’m writing it, I’m typing and bawling and wiping away a tear — there’s just so much emotion in it, said DeAndrea-Kohn, noting that she raised a young man, started a business and found her place in life. “To kind of come through the other side and be able to reflect back and go, ‘Look, everybody told me I would never amount to anything because I was pregnant and young and all these things’ — and I did. I’m successful to me, I’ve done everything that I have set out to do. DeAndrea-Kohn wrote the story for her son, Kenny

Gregory, who’s now 21 and living away from home in a house of roommates. She wanted to tell him that life can be rough, especially in one’s early 20s, and if he applies himself, he can do anything in life. She’s excited that the Chicken Soup editors found “Here I Stand to be a worthy inclusion in their book. The story flowed onto her computer screen without any revisions, said DeAndrea-Kohn, who’s lived in Bothell since 1992 and is now remarried. She owns FLAIR in Kirkland, which was designed to help business owners develop the tools they need to grow. On watching her son grow into a man, she noted: “I can’t believe this, but he’s 21. It’s just crazy to see him at his age now and the things that he’s

Clinical studies have shown the majority of fibromyalgia patients started having symptoms after a traumatic event like a car accident, work injury, or a fall. If you suffer with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, you know how demanding life can be. One fibromyalgia patient said it like this‌ “For people who take good health for granted, it’s hard to imagine a condition that makes simple tasks great tests of will and determination.â€? Contrary to what some people believe, you’re not lazy or crazy. Fibromyalgia is a real disease with real pain. Maybe your past doctors don’t even think fibromyalgia is a real disease, but you know it is. You feel it every day -- when you wake up in the morning, when you try to keep your house cleaned...even simple tasks like cooking dinner become a chore. Mark Pelligrino, MD (author of The Fibromyalgia Survivor), reported that after studying over 2,000 fibromyalgia patient’s files, he found two-thirds of fibromyalgia patients started having symptoms after a traumatic event like a car accident, work injury, or a fall. Another study published in the 1997 issue of Arthritis And Rheumatism, said fibromyalgia is 13 times more likely to occur following neck injury than following a leg injury. Prescription drugs are at best “masking tapeâ€? that covers up the daily warning signs of a painful disease. My name is Dr. Mark Travers, owner of Blue Stone Massage & Chiropractic

... New Year, New You days before the first class and has been surprised at the early interest. “I thought no one would show up,” said

TH

Aikins. “But it is for every skill level and body type.” The allure of the first-timers being able to tryout the class for free helped with the attendance.

The class incorporates a 15-minute warmup session with stretching and bouncing on the trampoline. Then the fun work begins as students get instruction on “rounc-

.. . T U O S ’ T E SECRE

ing”: jumping the length of the trampoline, eight squares, back-and-forth. The “rouncing” continues for 25 minutes, working up a good consistent workout. “Twenty-six times down-and-back equals a mile,” said Aikins. “It is the equivalent of a three mile run. But it is a lot easier on the joints than running on hard pavement.” Aikins said no one in the first two classes has been able to get to 26 “rounces” but she is sure they will work up to it as their bouncing skills improve. And while it is not as easy as it sounds, it is as fun as it sounds.

“Most people see bouncing on a trampoline as a basic skill but a lot of people need some time to get it down,” said Aikins. That is because the student has to learn to jump the proper distance so as not to hit the divider and then NEW learn how to turn around by bouncing off the 45-degree angle wall trampoline. And the workout is not just for the legs. “You can tailor the exercise to what you want to do,” said Aikins, who used to teach traditional aerobics classes. “It is not just a lower-body workout.”

The workout can also be good for rehabbing some injuries. Aikins said that she injured her ankle and the Skyrobics helped her to heel faster. Aikins also said it is a good way for those looking to get into a low-impact workout regimen. “As you get older you tend to get less active and this is a fun way to stay active. The possibilities are endless with this,” said Aikins, who noted that you have to be aware at all times with the workout. “It really keeps the mind active, too.” The facility, which opened on Dec. 10, also offers dodgeball, a toddler time and other events, such as free jump. Dropins can expect to pay $8 an hour, $40 for a month of unlimited jump time or $60 for a punch-card that does not expire and incorporates 10 jump sessions. Those under 18 years old must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver, which is available online.

So instead of “eating better” or “losing weight,” set more concrete goals such as “filling half my cart with vegetables each time I shop,” or “lose 30 pounds by August.” The second challenge is planning. Once we have our goals set, we often think the work is done, and that identifying the goal will naturally lead to achieving it; but having a firm plan in place will help you stick to your resolution in the long run, especially during times of stress. Strategies such as creating weekly menus, scheduling regular exercise, and setting attainable

short-term goals help maintain motivation. Setting goals and having a great plan in place won’t work if you don’t also have a good support system. Tetanus is an acute infectious disease, mostly fatal, which enters the body through wounds or open sores and in the umbilicus following non-sterile child delivery. Most babies who get the disease die. It is characterized by spasmodic contractions, convulsions and rigidity of some or all of the voluntary muscles, especially the jaw, face, and neck. MCADAMS REMODELING TO HOST OPEN HOUSE

“I just have to get my Marilyn Monroe poster framed.....TODAY! It will complete my room, my daughter exclaimed as she bolted down the stairs of our new home. We had just moved to Kirkland in July 2011 and while the rest of the house was ceiling-high with boxes, my daughter’s room looked like a page out of Architectural Digest. Admittedly, she does have amazing taste and a flair for interior design. Combine that with the urgency to completely set up her room within mere hours of waving goodbye to the moving van, and I was on a mission to find a frame shop.
