The auditions for Orcas Has Talent last Saturday ended with eight contestants/groups winning a “Golden Ticket” to compete at the finale show on Feb. 4. The finalists are: high school band AllMost Canadian, Al Bentley on saxophone, Carl Burger on guitar, youth acoustic string group Ceolinas led by Pamela Wirght and singers KT Laslo, Marissa Veldman, Maura Pelleteri and Rhiannon Lawson. Most of the winners are pictured above. For coverage of the event and a slide show of all the contestants, visit www.islandssounder.com. During the finale show, the performers have a chance to win a grand prize of $500. Magician Matthew Laslo-White, winner of the Orcas Has Talent junior contest, will also compete. For a story on his win, see page 2. The show at Orcas Center on Feb. 4 starts at 6:30 p.m. General admission tickets are on sale at Darvill’s Bookstore now – adults are $25, youth $15 (ages 12 and under). Tickets for general seating often sell out, so live streaming video will once again be offered in the Madrona Room. For questions, email orcashastalent@gmail.com.
Orcas Fire & Rescue reviews 2011 by VALERIE HARRIS
Orcas Fire Division Chief
Orcas Island Fire and Rescue had a number of memorable events to mark in 2011. We created a display for the public to report on the previous five years and demonstrate how the 2005 Strategic Plan was implemented. The display showed at Orcas Center and at pancake breakfasts. This summer the “Ropes Rescue Team” was given a huge opportunity – traveling to the Tetons in Wyoming to train to the next technical skill level – thanks to the generosity of Larry and Loretta Taubman. The department honored the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a ceremony and a plan to build a permanent memorial. One fire department member drove to New York to bring back an artifact from the Twin Towers. We took second place at Rosario’s “Festival of Trees” event, with proceeds to help fund the memorial. The final piece of the 2005 strategic plan to be completed was the dedication of the new Deer Harbor fire station on Sept. 11. We also held an educational haunted house on Halloween for the youngsters and hope to make that an annual event. The fire department is a dynamic organiza-
tion, and we have lost some valuable members to relocation and new job opportunities. Those members will be sorely missed, but we wish them all the very best of luck in their new ventures. District fire chief Mike Harris has announced his retirement, and the district is currently searching for his replacement. The fire department also had some gains: we welcomed several new members who are currently undergoing EMT training. There were 501 medical and 183 fire related calls in 2011. At 684 calls, our total 911 call volume was down slightly from 2010, but still above the last five-year average of 665 calls.
Medical calls The highest profile medical problems were cardiac, neurological emergencies such as strokes, and respiratory distress, comprising seven percent, six percent and five percent of calls, respectively. Thirty-two percent of medical calls were “general.” Trauma (or injury) is a heavy hitter, at 22 percent of calls. Thankfully we have very few major traumas. Six percent of calls were pediatric (medical or trauma). Invalid assists or medical equipment assis-
tance made up 7.5 percent of our calls. We encountered obstetrical emergencies less than one percent and deaths two percent of the time. While most births happen without the fire department’s involvement, nearly all deaths on the island involve us, even if there are no resuscitation efforts to be made. Two percent of 2011 calls were related to psychiatric problems.
Fire-related calls Nearly 40 percent of fire-related calls involved investigating reports of smoke, odors and illegal burning. Automatic and audible alarms accounted for another 25 percent of calls. We typically have more wildland fires than structure fires; responses to burning land made up just shy of three percent, and burning buildings just two percent of our overall fire calls. Another three percent involved burning appliances or electrical fires that were extinguished before the building caught fire. Almost four percent of the fire calls were chimney fires that were put out before the building caught on fire. Vehicle fires account for two percent, and fuel or liquid fires another one percent. Four percent of calls qualified as hazardous, and less than one percent was represented by one explosion.

For Christmas, state parks handed out pink slips instead of presents, cutting 16 full-time permanent construction and maintenance staff and 66 full-time rangers from the payroll. The rangers will be given options for seasonal employment, with the aim of keeping staffing in parks from May through September similar to current year-round levels. “It’s the heavier maintenance that happens in the winter that we’re going to be light on in order to keep staffing there for visitors,” said state Parks Communications Specialist Virginia Painter. “Over time that will show, and we know it’s not sustainable, but this is something we have to do.” Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan is losing two full-time positions: Ranger William Hoppe and Ken Schilling, in charge of construction and maintenance.

Longtime island resident and Island Market employee Richard Marney and his family are in great need of community support as Richard undergoes treatment for esophageal cancer this winter. The cancer was discovered in October when Richard started having trouble swallowing, and it has been determined to be inoperable and incurable. Richard is currently undergoing chemotherapy every week and will eventually

be starting radiation treatment. Richard’s wife Linda has become the family’s sole financial supporter, and two of their grown children, Elyshia and Jerod, are trying to find odd jobs in order to help contribute. Richard is very weak from chemotherapy and has difficulty eating, so Elyshia and Jerod take turns helping Richard throughout the day. Richard’s insurance is due to expire at the end of January. Donations can be made at Islanders Bank to the Richard Marney Medical Fund. To hire Elyshia or Jerod for odd jobs, leave a message for them at 3765477. “Please come together as a community and offer this island family some help and support, said organizer Judi Lindgren. “Thank you to all the wonderful residents of Orcas Island.

Matthew Laslo-White has decided to compete with the adults during the Orcas Has Talent finale show on Feb. 4 at Orcas Center. The young magician won over the three judges – Joe and Susan Babcock and Bob Shipstad – during the Orcas Has Talent junior competition on Jan. 21. He had the option to perform or compete at the final event in two weeks, and he opted to try his luck at the ultimate title. Friends Paris Wilson, Sabrina Bailey and Camryn Thompson, who made up the group “M & Ms, came in as runners up. They sang, rapped and danced during their rendition of “Dominate. They will also perform during the finale show. Other young contestants were sisters Tori and Violet Sturk as the “Cosmic Cuties dance duo, Stormy Hildreth singing “I could have danced all night, Hailey Stephens singing “Hold it against me, and Monica Connell performing “Dog town boogie as well as her own composition on the piano. Loggers slip through the net Vikings lose one, win some Viking fans packed the gym for the boys' Jan. 13 game against the Darrington Loggers. Despite a tough fight, Orcas saw victory slip away during the final minutes of the game for a score of 52-47. The teams aggressively edged each other throughout; at half the score was 18-21. The Vikings turned the tables to push ahead by a nose in the third quarter, thanks to three consecutive baskets by Jake Zier followed by a quick drive and score by Devon Stanzione. The Darrington coach quickly called a timeout to break up the accelerating Viking momentum, ending the scoring run. Orcas started the final quarter at 33-30. Zier powered through a crowd to sink a jumper under the basket, drawing first blood, but Darrington replied by hauling in a missed Viking shot
attempt and sprinting down to score, adding a free throw to the board as well: 35-33. An Orcas three-pointer got the crowd cheering itself hoarse, but the Loggers relentlessly pounded in shots to pull ahead, 38-40. With four minutes to go, the Darrington cheer squad let loose cries of “Logger power! The Loggers took advantage of missed Viking shots to take possession of the game, and even a smooth three-pointer by Jack Gates at 13 seconds couldn’t quite pull off the win. The boys drove hard until the very end; as the final buzzer sounded, one last Viking three-point attempt rang off the rim, a near miss. Meanwhile, the Viking girls have been busy. The team traveled to Cedar Park Christian last week, where they finished with a victory against the Lions, 46-25. Leading scorers were Shelbi Rogers and Lana Bronn with 14 points each. Kathryn Tidwell had 12 rebounds
and Susol finished with 4 steals. The team hosted Darrington on Jan. 13, but did not clinch a win. The final score was 50-36. Bella Nigretto led the Vikings with 16 points. Rogers had 8; Alicia Susol 4; Aliviah Garcia 3; Lana Bronn 2; Kathryn Tidwell 1, as well as 10 rebounds. Susol and Bronn had 3 steals each. The girls bounced back with a major win against Evergreen Lutheran the next day, 74-19. Nigretto led again with 20 points. Alena Janssen finished with 15; Rogers had 11; Susol had 8; Tidwell and Tamara Klein scored 6; Garcia had 4; Claire O’Neill and Hannah BrunnerGaydos came in with 2. Susol finished with 10 rebounds; Nigretto, Rogers, Susol and Garcia had 3 steals each. The Vikings will play Concrete on Jan. 25 at home: girls at 3 p.m. and boys at 4:30 p.m. On Jan. 27, the teams play LaConner: boys at 3 p.m., girls at 4:30 p.m. Final home game is against Cedar Creek on Feb. 3: girls at 3 p.m., boys at 430 p.m.
Shakespeare to hit the streets by COLLEEN S. ARMSTRONG Editor/Associate Publisher
If you go shopping in an island store at the end of March, you just might run into someone from the days of the Globe Theatre and roasted mutton. The Orcas Island Chamber is sponsoring its first annual spring Shakespeare Festival on March 30 and 31. Chamber board president Michell Marshall says the goal is “to provide an event during the shoulder season as well as a cultural offering to the community. The Seattle Shakespeare Company will perform, Eastsound will be decorated in bright, whimsical colors, restaurants and shops will be offering special events, art inspired by the Bard will be on display, and performers will wander the streets juggling, singing, doing card tricks, walking on stilts, and more. The event is still in the planning stages, and organizers invite anyone interested in being a performer to email creative director Jane Alden at stratford331@ gmail.com. The chamber is also inviting all local businesses to develop a Shakespeare-inspired decor or in-house event. “They can be involved in any way they want, said chamber board member Susan Gudgell. The festival is being publicized nationally and
throughout the state, so Marshall expects visitors from near and far. On March 30, Seattle Shakespeare will perform “Romeo and Juliet for students, followed by a workshop. The company is providing a scholarship so all Orcas students can attend the performance free of charge. On March 31, the company will present “Hamlet at Orcas Center. Tickets go on sale Feb. 1; $16 for adults, $12 for seniors, $10 students. Alden says the “the performances are the jewel in a much larger event. Ultimately, the chamber
wants the festival to be one of its annual events, like the July 4th and Tree-Lighting celebrations. With Alden at the creative helm, it is sure to be a wacky, fabulous event. She spent more than 40 years as a professional actress working on Broadway, off-Broadway, in regional repertory theatres, in touring companies, and in television and films. After moving to Orcas 16 years ago, she created the Orcas Island Children’s Theatre and began teaching, directing, producing and writing for children’s theatre. Shakespeare has always been a special love.

To the Editor: More people to thank for holiday help Isn’t it wonderful when your biggest holiday stressor is having SO many people to thank that you worry about forgetting one? Well, we actually forgot two! A couple of weeks ago, Orcas Trailblazers submitted an article about our 4H Community Service Project we do in coordination with the Food Bank, providing 98 children with gift-filled stockings. The process was explained and gratitude was given to many of the people and groups that make this project possible (thank you again) but we forgot two very important pieces: the Orcas Kiwanis make sure every child gets a handmade wooden car and/or a snuggly stuffed animal. Their contributions are a great addition to some of the more practical items, like the toothbrushes, paste and floss that Dr. Brenda Ivans and Dr. Steve Bailey make sure go in each. This project is another example of the generosity within our community. Thank you to all! And one final happy holidays! Amber Paulsen Orcas Trailblazers
Giving Tree appreciation Another Christmas has come and gone. The Giving Tree at Island Market had approximately 195 children on it this year. This is up from the previous years. With the economy and lack of work in the winter, we were expecting high numbers this year. The Giving Tree went up a week before Thanksgiving to provide people the opportunity to come in and pick a tag and be able to shop the day after Thanksgiving on Black Friday. The response was overwhelming. Tags were being signed out at a rapid rate. People would come in and search the tree for the tag that spoke to them the most. Word got out that there would not be a Toys for Tots this year, and people really wanted to participate. We had a lot of people come in and inquire about the tree for the first time and then take a tag with them. Every tag was taken and every wish filled. I would like to extend a “thank you to the following: Island

New CAO rules neglect to show need, cost The San Juan County Council is proposing new rules and restrictions on property owners in the county under what they are calling the Critical Areas Ordinance. The current draft has evolved into a complex document listing sets of new restrictions encumbering both existing homes and undeveloped properties. Portions of nearly all private property in the islands will be restricted under a system of critical area designations and critical area buffers. Unfortunately, the council is proposing rules and restrictions without identifying an environmental need or any analysis as to the cost of compliance for the property owners, or cost and difficulty of administration by the county. The council majority has shown no interest in reporting how the new restrictions will affect the value of the newly restricted private property. Also not addressed is the cost to the local economy, island businesses or jobs for working families. The council majority appears to view private property rights as an arcane historical footnote that is simply a small obstacle to be overcome. I am puzzled as to how some
members of the county council we elected to represent the interests and well being of the citizens of our community could have strayed so far from what our citizens elected to do. Craig & Jill Dorsey Roche Harbor
Concerns about CAO I have been mulling over the non-conforming designation issue that is part of the proposed San Juan County’s rewrite of the Critical Areas Ordinance. The county is planning on extending a new regulatory overlay called a “buffer around the islands wetlands and streams and along the 400 miles of county shorelines. The buffer overlays are intended to provide a natural barrier from human use as a protection for the designated critical areas. The proposed buffer widths range up to 300 feet – no small matter. The Friends of the San Juans’ support the county’s buffer proposals and in their newspaper ads say buffers should not be a worry to a property owner if their home, associated structures and uses (such as driveways or landscaping) are declared non-conforming. The Department of Ecology says that the purpose of a non-conforming designation is the eventual elimination of the non-conforming use; in this case a home. I am not sure a new layer of regulatory restrictions is in a property owner’s best interest. Maybe it is something to pay attention to. The way I look at it is to imagine a hypothetical example: two homes that are for sale and identical in every way inside and out. If one home has no restrictions

Most motor vehicle crashes are accounted for in the medical calls, but six percent of last year’s calls were non-injury motor vehicle crashes where traffic control and assistance to tow was needed. On 13 percent of fire calls we assisted other agencies such as the Sheriff ’s Department, helped the public and looked for lost people. We look forward to serving our Orcas Island community in 2012!

on the use or replacement other than the typical County rules, and the other is encumbered by a County non-conforming use overlay, complete with new rules and restrictions under the Critical Area Ordinance, which would I choose to buy? The obvious answer is to choose the home without the added rules and restrictions associated with the non-conforming designation. Considering that literally thousands of existing upland and shoreline homes – maybe yours – will become non-conforming uses unless the county council directs the county’s planners to change direction, now is a very good time to contact your Council representatives. The Council’s final decisions will be made in the next several months. Get involved! Fred Bowen Friday Harbor

The request is actually ever so slightly lower than the current rate (the current levy (2011) is 55 cents and the replacement levy (2013) will be 54 cents per $1000 of assessed property value). A good school is the heart of a healthy community. OISD needs this funding to continue to thrive. Please vote “yes for the levy. Hilary Canty and Hank Date Orcas Island

PARK CUTS FROM 1 Ranger Ted Schlund, San Juan area manager, will be responsible for 17 Marine Parks. “I’m heartbroken about what’s happening with the people close to me and the uncertainty, Schlund said. Officials from Spencer Spit State Park on Lopez could not be reached before story deadline. A ranger position and one maintenance position have also been cut at Moran State Park. But based on Parks’ seniority system, more experienced rangers whose positions are eliminated are given the option to take the jobs of less senior rangers, creating a domino effect of job displacements. In that process, assistant park manager Kinnan Murray, ranger Rich Doss and maintenance specialist Dan Craftsman will lose their jobs. Moran will keep manager Jim Schuh and maintenance specialist Greg Stone; Murray and Doss will be replaced with more senior rangers. Candace Rodda, the ranger featured in the Sounder’s Jan. 2011 “Day in the Life story, left her position this September and has not been replaced due to the uncertainty of looming budget cuts. The park’s nine months per year seasonal office assistant position will be
boosted to year-round in order to free up the remaining rangers to be out in the park more. Murray, his wife Amy (a preschool teacher at Children’s House on Orcas), and their two children will also lose the ranger housing that comes with his job. Kinnan will be offered a seasonal position somewhere, but the closest potential location is Larrabee State Park, as Moran won’t have any seasonal rangers. “Because of the number of people being impacted, you have to have over nine years of experience to be offered a full time ‘ranger 2’ position somewhere in the state,â€? said Kinnan. “Trying to piecemeal seven months of work around a fivemonth [seasonal ranger] job is not realistic ‌ I’m trying to look around for other things to do.â€? All the job displacements and re-placements are expected to be final by Feb. 1. By the time all the state parks dominoes fall into place, there will be less than one full-time ranger per state park: 102 rangers to staff 120 state parks. The Washington Sate Parks and Recreation Commission made a decision to reduce staff rather than close the parks, in part because closed doors will not make money. The state parks department is expected to become fully self-sustaining by July
of 2013, and last summer’s state’s biennial budget gave Parks just a fraction of its previous budget as “bridge funding. Now that $17.3 million has been slashed by another $11 million. The Discover Pass that took effect last July has to date fallen far shy of its projected revenue of $65 million within two years. The pass has brought in just $7.2 million in its first four months. “The longer the agency waits to make reductions, the deeper the cuts will be, read the commissions’ agenda notes. “Each month delay would mean approximately $750,000 a month in additional cuts. Painter says parks officials hope the financial situation will improve over time. “Common sense tells you it takes time for people to learn about and participate in something like the Discover Pass [now funding the parks], she said. “The parks system is exploring other ways of earning revenue over time. A statewide total of nine additional park aides will be added as extra hands at lower wages, helping the park rangers with tasks from assisting and directing visitors to cleaning and maintenance. For more information on how this situation will affect Lime Kiln, read the full story online at www. islandssounder.com.

Obituaries Herlwyn Lutz L. Herlwyn Lutz left us quickly on Jan. 12, 2012. Born in Salt Lake City Sept. 5, 1934, he grew up in Wyoming, Ky., and Illinois before hitchhiking west to Seattle at 17. After a stint as an army medic, he graduated from SPU in 1963 with a degree in zoology and education. Marrying Barbara Barnowe the same year, they settled in Kirkland, where he taught 5th and 6th grade. With a truck and trailer packed to bursting, he and Barbara arrived on Orcas in 1993. A certified Master Gardener, and member of
the Garden Club, Herlwyn transformed their simple property on Kramer Lane into a blooming, fruitful Eden. It was a matter of course to find a homecanned jar of pears, a brace of beets, or a fat squash on your counter after one of his visits. An arborist for 34 years, it was a common sight to behold Herwlyn high in a swaying fir, sawdust flying. A lover of the trees he knew

so well, he often refused to take one down if it was especially regal. He also spent his early years here filling in as a substitute teacher at Orcas High School. Herlwyn loved music, and spent a lifetime singing. His expressive tenor/ bass voice was a staple in the Orcas Choral Society for 16 years. His foremost passion, however, was self-realization. A devoted seeker of deep spiritual truth, he meditated daily beginning in the 1950s, and spent long hours in the company of his spiritual teachers. With an encyclopedic knowledge of religion and philosophy, and an egalitarian approach, he believed in the common purpose and truth in all traditions. He regularly attended Circle of the Spirit, the Orcas Community Church, the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Sambodha, the Theosophical Society at Indralaya, and the Cross and the Lotus. Perhaps what he will be remembered most for though was his non-stop, cheerful, open-hearted generosity and volunteering. It was a common sight to see him neatly tending one of our roadside community parks, mowing an elderly person’s lawn, or dropping off food for a community
member in need. If help was ever needed, he would find a way to be there. A man of simple means, Herlwyn nevertheless steadily donated to families in India, Thailand, Haiti, Africa, Central America, and elsewhere. Many lives have been touched by his noble giving. Few people have been as devoted to making themselves, their community, and the world better. He was a shining example of humanity, and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbara, his sons David of Eastsound, Shawn and Aaron of Woodinville, and daughter Mira of Anacortes. A memorial fund has been set up for Barbara at Islanders Bank in Eastsound. Donations in his name would also be gratefully received at his favorite charities, including Seva Mandir (http://www. sevamandir.org) and Heifer International (www.Heifer. org). Please join us in celebrating Herlwyn’s life at the Orcas Community Church Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1:30 p.m. Submitted by Herlwyn Lutz’s family.
Albert Edward “Bud McBride, Jr. Albert Edward “Bud McBride, Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2012 in his home at the McBride Nisqually family farm. The son of Albert Edward and Pauline Leona (McAllister) McBride, he was born May 23, 1927 in Olympia. He was a descendant of the pioneer McAllister, Mounts and McLeod families, and of Chief Sca-da-wah of the Cowlitz Tribe. He graduated from Lincoln High School, Tacoma, in 1945. He served in the Army from 1945 to 1947 in Japan. Bud was a founder/partner of the Klee Wyk Studio at Nisqually and produced many collectible pieces of pottery and art. Then Bud opened Crow Valley Pottery on Orcas Island with partner Richard Schneider, where business flourished for 35 years until retirement. Bud and Richard undertook the restoration of the 1888 Crow Valley School, completing the restoration for the centennial celebra-
tion. The school has recently been dedicated to the Orcas Island Historical Society. Bud is survived by his life partner Richard E. Schneider, nephews Robert B. (Cindy) McBride and Mark A. McBride and great nephews Brent (Ashley), Patrick, Paul and Nickolas. He was also Uncle Bud to Richard’s nieces and nephews, children of his sisters Joyce Nigretto and Viola Coleman. He was predeceased by his father and mother, and brothers Delbert J. McBride and Malcolm A. (Patricia J.) McBride. A celebration of life will be held at the family farm later in the spring. Submitted by McBride’s family.

Island Living Snow report Islanders slipped and sledded their way through nearly a week of snow by COLLEEN SMITH ARMSTRONG

t was an exciting time for local kids, most of whom got nearly a week off of school. It was not quite so thrilling for the adults, who had a hard time driving to work on icy, snowy roads. “Overall this hasn’t been a major winter storm event, said Brendan Cowan, the director of San Juan County Department of Emergency Management. “It’s definitely had some impacts, including school closures and some cars off the road, but ... power outages have been isolated, and the amount of snow was more of an inconvenience than a major hazard. Cowan says if the storm had come in a bit farther north, as was originally forecasted, it would have been a record breaker and much more serious. The winter storm in December 2008 was the last major stretch of inclement weather the San Juans have experienced. “Any islander who has been here for a few years or more will remember much more snow that lasted longer and caused many more problems (than this recent event), Cowan said. He thinks most islanders are well prepared for storms, but it’s still a good time for families, neighborhoods and businesses to “take stock of how they’d hold up in a larger
