Like many Finn Hill residents, Margaret Horne is vigilant about Big Finn Hill Park use as she walks through the forest every day with her dog. “We’re always watching people in the woods, making sure they are not making new trails or cutting down trees,” she said. So when Horne came around the corner Feb. 15 while walking along the park trail that runs parallel to N.E. 138th Place off Juanita Drive, she was struck by the sight of a backhoe. “We didn’t know it was coming,” she said of the equipment that flattened several areas of trail veg-

etation as crews took soil samples last week at the proposed site of a new Kirkland fire station. The crews conducted a geo-technical survey to determine if the site would be suitable for a fire station, said Jack Henderson, Kirkland Fire Department deputy chief of operations. He noted the work was a “standard construction project” and said the crews did not remove any trees. Also, the permit that was issued by King County requires the geo-technical firm to replant the damaged vegetation, he added. “We’re still trying to decide whether this is a proper lot or not for a fire station,” said Henderson, adding that the department

The pharmacy, which currently employs six, moved from Lynnwood where it had been for seven years. Remedies’ drive through became an issue for local traffic and was moved to Kirkland as a result. Store employees emphasized that they want their local neighbors to feel comfortable with coming to them with their needs. But the pharmacy’s main focus is serving the elderly and diabetes patients. For senior customers, the pharmacy supplies one free

The city and Fire District 41, which provides service to the area but will dissolve with annexation, have been negotiating for months with King County to acquire the site for a new station. Fire officials want to sell two smaller stations on Finn Hill and consolidate them into one larger station to improve response time and save on operating costs. Proceeds from the sale of the existing stations would pay for the new one. But many Finn Hill residents have expressed anger about the lack of public involvement in the project so far. A Finn Hill resident for nearly 20 years, Patti Anderson said the recent soil work took her by surprise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was not expecting it and it made me feel that plans were further along than anybody in the public knew they were,â&#x20AC;?

said Anderson, a former Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance president. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ludicrous, frankly. My concern is that the idea that a large fire station and large parking lot can be developed and placed in this park is misguided â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially without widespread community knowledge, debate and feedback.â&#x20AC;? She also said she is opposed to the fire station. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bad stewardship of park land,â&#x20AC;? said Anderson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This particular park is highly coveted by this community with a long-standing commitment of preservation and restoration. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s absolutely the wrong place for this project.â&#x20AC;? The Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance (DCNA) also voted to oppose the potential Finn Hill fire station during its monthly board meeting on Tuesday. After considering objections voiced by residents at the meeting, a majority of DCNA board

members agreed that the Finn Hill location â&#x20AC;&#x153;undermines goals that are critically important to the community,â&#x20AC;? according to a Feb. 22 press release. The DCNA said the acreage designated for the proposed station in existing King County park land is used daily by hikers and bikers. The soil work last week â&#x20AC;&#x153;raised concerns among many residents, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard little, if any details on the proposal or the rationale for its siting,â&#x20AC;? said DCNA in the press release. Fire District 41 Commissioner Toby Nixon said the non-profit groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to oppose the station implies the district has had no communication with DCNA. He said fellow commissioner Jim Lloyd attended a Dec. 8 DCNA meeting and outlined the proposal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We thought the outcome of the meeting was very positive and they (DCNA) looked

...young at heart Áegis Lodge resident celebrates 100th birthday Áegis Lodge resident Richard Frank reached a milestone lifespan of 100 years on Jan. 8. Frank’s father William and his mother Marie Gottbarth were both born in the U.S. and were of German background. His grandmother was from the Berlin area and his father from Bavaria. Frank was born in Louisville, Ky. on Jan. 8, 1911. Frank excelled at everything he did, placing first HAPPY in all his classes from the first grade through his Stanford University Law Degree, JD Order of the Coif, Summa cum Laude, for his studies in Law and Business Administration. While still a law student, Frank co-authored two volumes of a six-volume study of American Family Law. The study recommended numerous changes in the existing law. Many of the suggestions were adopted by the various states, even before the study was completed. Frank takes pride that the head of the project never changed one word of his work but recognizes that the

professor was worn out after a decade on the project and was anxious to complete it. Richard Frank and Helen Farris were married on April 20, 1935; he was 24. They had a family of two daughters, one deceased, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Frank spent a few years of private practice as an attorney in San Francisco. The advent of WWII took him to Washington D.C. to work in one of the temporary agencies created to manage wartime affairs. He joined the Office of Price Administration (OPA), which set the price and availability of many essential products. He was in the enforcement unit of the OPA and ultimately became the director of that unit. With the end of the war, Frank became a professor of business law at Syracuse University in upstate New York. The long, very cold winters in Syracuse were interesting for a few years. However, when Stanford looked him up and offered a joint appointment in the Law School and School of Busi-

He and his wife Helen lived for 12 years in a retirement home in Redmond before moving to Áegis three years ago.

[ LWSD from page 1] “Basically both sides said things are really crazy right now and now is not the time to make three-year commitments,” she said. “As a district, we are not in a position to promise anything. We don’t know yet what we’re going to get with the state budget.” While funding remains a question, the 2011-12 school calendar has been agreed upon by both sides. The changes to the 2011-12 school calendar will be “really positive improvements,” Teeley said. Before this extension agreement, both sides agreed to move spring break from the last week in March to the first week in April to more closely align with neighboring school districts, according to Reith. The newly adopted school-calendar changes include moving the dates for the elementary school conferences from Oct. 20, 21 and 24 to Oct. 3, 4 and 6 to better facilitate

the student goal-setting portion of these parent/ teacher conferences, Reith said. During that conference, students, teachers and parents establish goal setting for the whole school year, so moving the date to earlier in the school year made sense, Reith said. In addition, the dates for the elementary school mid-year conferences were changed from Jan. 26 and 27 to Jan. 31, Feb. 2 and 3, giving teachers an extra day to work with parents, according to Reith. A calendar for the 2012-13 school year was also developed so that families and staff could make plans. All calendars are subject to change. As for next year’s teacher negotiations, both sides are “being hopeful the economy will turn around,” Reith said. Both sides will return to the bargaining table next January to negotiate the next three-year CBA, which will start in 2012-13.

She earnestly tried to counsel my young daughter explaining that she should not get her hopes up. Nonetheless, we filled out paperwork and waited to hear from the adoption organization. After a few days, the call came to arrange an in-home interview. Clearly, they were careful to adopt their rescued dogs into secure homes. They required verification of home ownership or proof of landlords’ acceptance of pets. They inspected our yard to ensure it would be safe. Then we waited a few more days while the fostering group determined which home Rosie would go to. She came to us. Rosie is such a sweetie, but part of

We arrived on the appointed day and as the van drove up, pandemonium ensued. As we looked for Sheena, Rosie found her way to us as she sought a quiet safe place. BRIEFS Kang boys season ends at districts The Lake Washington season came to an end Feb. 18 with a 75-61 loss to Rainier Beach at the SeaKing district tournament. Lake Washington was in the hunt for the final state berth out of the district tournament, but ran into the No. 2 team in the state, after Rainier Beach was pushed to the consolation bracket with a loss to Bellevue. The Kangs had lost earlier in the tournament to another top ranked team out of Seattle, Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Dea. On Feb. 15, the Kangs lost 78-71 in a close battle

during the district quarterfinals. Lake Washington led early in the game, but fell behind and never regained the lead. Darien Nelson-Henry had 25 points for Lake Washington during the match against Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Dea, Kramer Taylor had 24 and Guy Lynott added 11. During the season Matt Staudacher was one of the KingCo conferenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading scorers, averaging 16 points a game over the seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 22 matches. Nelson-Henry had a 14.4 game point average, while Taylor earned an average of 12.7 for the team. The Kangs ended the season with a 15-11 record.

with it, during Tuesday’s district match between Juanita and top ranked Holy Names. The final score was 74-41 for the Cougars. Offensively, Holy Names never slowed, while holding every Juanita player to under 10 points in the game.

Against Holy Names Tayler Lloyd had eight points, while Cryderman and Grager each had seven. Destry Seiler had six, Carter and Jones had five and Paddock had three. The Rebels ended the season with a 19-7 overall record.

Edgar Martinez helps rebuild home in native Puerto Rico Kirkland resident Edgar Martinez joined Habitat for Humanity of East King County (EKC) for a home-building trip to his childhood home of Puerto Rico on Feb. 14-18. “I had a great experience working with the team from Habitat for Humanity,” said Martinez. “They worked very hard for three days. It showed me the passion they have for the organization and the people they serve.” The Habitat for Humanity Puerto Rico affiliate hosted the team of staff and volunteers from Habitat for Humanity EKC. Although born in New York City, Martinez moved to Dorado, Puerto Rico in 1965 and attended American University of Puerto Rico before moving back to the states and being drafted to the Seattle Mariners. He currently lives in Kirkland. This is Martinez’ second trip to visit Habitat for Humanity in Puerto Rico, but his first time helping to build a Habitat house. Last May, he joined Tom Granger, executive director of Habitat EKC and Amanda Silva, executive director of Habitat Puerto Rico and Board members in the ground-breaking event for their latest home-building project. During his latest trip, he was joined by Habitat EKC staff and eight other dedicated volunteers from the Eastside. The group laid rebar for the second level of a house, setting wood form work and helping the electrician and plumber with rough-in work. If you see leaves flying around in low little eddies west of the parking lot on windless days, take time to focus on the activity. Most of the birds causing the eddies are robins, but mixed in them may be varied thrushes, spotted towhees, golden crowned kinglets, song sparrows, other sparrows and starlings. Indian plum is beginning to bloom, and some hazelnuts and elderberry are leafing out. I have seen the soft fuzzy pussy willows blooms in the park as well. If you look closely at Indian plum flowers, you will notice different shrubs have different kinds of flowers. Some have stamens only, others pistils only, and both male and female flower-bearing plants must be in proximity to pollinize the

In mid-February, many park visitors were concerned about an apparently sick swan cygnet (young bird), whose family group of one sibling and both parents lingered with it. By the end of the week, the cygnet died. Lead poisoning is suspected from its swelled neck and stomach. Fish and Wildlife were called about our concerns before the bird died.
